What tripod do I get? I have an a6000.

I'm hoping to spend around $50. I've looked around on this sub, and I've seen many people recommend MeFoto tripods, but they're quite expensive.

Something like this seems great, but due to it's really low price, I don't think it would be as sturdy as I'd hope. I was looking at a few other models and was wondering if these are good options?(Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically any tripod will fit my camera):

  1. Camera Tripod - Monopod Stand for Travel Video Canon Nikon DSLR Camera with Bag

  2. Albott 70" Travel Portable DSLR Camera Tripod Monopod Flexible Head for Canon Nikon with Carry Bag

  3. InnerTeck Tripod - 70 Inches Professional Camera Tripod Monopod with Carry Bag for SLR DSLR Canon Nikon Sony DV Video - Travel Portable Tripod

  4. ZOMEI Q111 55" Flexible Camera Tripod 4s Stand with 1/4 Mount 3-Way PanHead for DSLR EOS Canon Nikon Sony Samsung(Red)

My main use for this tripod is to shoot B-Roll, so something sturdy and something that pans smoothly is ideal.
u/thefilmjerk · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

I have this one (Lowe pro Freeline), and I can easily fit my a7 iii, tamron 28-75, rokinon 14 2,8, and another lens or two (i rented a 24 to 105 for something and had it in there comfortably the other day with all the rest.) and plenty of accessories. I've even used the top part as a quick overnight bag too. Easy to attach a tripod to the straps on the front (the back?) and it sits comfortably on my shoulders, has good chest straps for securing...gorilla pod and plenty of other accessories fit in the side straps. It's low profile, definitely only for mirrorless size cameras. I can share pics if interested.

>Thank you for the lengthy and detailed response! I know about the ability to use my Minolta lenses, and I'm actually looking forward to it so much! I just love film photography, but it's becoming far too expensive for me to develop film on a regular basis. I think you may be right about the kit lens though, which unfortunately means that I may not be able to afford the camera, as I'd have to save up a bit more for another lens (I've been spoiled by my f/1.7 lens on my Minolta, and would hate to have to go any higher, but I've seen that lenses with similar apertures can go for quite a bit.

So long as you're not afraid of manually handling focus and aperture, an MD-Nex adapter from K&F is, like, 15£ on UK Amazon.

>Totally did not know about the autofocus though! It's such a shame that it's bad. One of the reasons I hate taking video on my DSLR is because the autofocus in live view is absolutely garbage, (though that may just be my lens).

I'm probably being too hard on the autofocus. It works well enough in bright situations with single point focus. It's primarily the kit lens that has issues, imo, where it would often miss or hunt forever.

>In your experience, is the a7 an all around good camera for stills and short videos? I've got a trip to Japan coming up soon, and I really don't want to bring my DSLR or my film camera since I plan on travelling relatively lightly.

For stills? It's fantastic. Image quality is out of this world, and focusing even with manual lenses is a breeze with the internal zooming, focus peaking, and all that jazz. For video it's less so, mainly because it doesn't have any stabilisation. Granted, some lenses (including the kit lens) has this built-in, but most do not. It's up to you, if you feel this bothers you. Autofocus in video I honestly can't comment on. Just note that the focusing on the kit lens is loud.

>Anyways, I just want a full frame camera that is really a jack of most trades. I know that the a7 isn't the master of anything in particular, I just saw the deal, and seeing as I've been thinking about the alpha series for quite some time, maybe it would be a good idea.

I think you will like it. Especially if you absolutely can't go back to aps-c. You'll learn its quirks with time, and if the kit lens is as horrible as I described it, you'll sell it and make a bit back. Maybe you'll buy a better Sony lens, or maybe you'll adapt some older glass.

Edit: Here's a link to the adapter, by the way. https://www.amazon.co.uk/MD-NEX-Adapter-Concept%C2%AE-Minolta-E-Mount/dp/B00LECYONM

I got the grip as well. Love it! I still shoot my Nikons still, but less and less now days. You are going to be very happy. I would also recommend the Meike Hand Grip it is very comfortable and has a built in Arca Swiss compatible plate built in.

u/qqphot · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

It sure is. It's a little less ridiculous if you get one of those grip extenders for the bottom of the camera. The LA-EA4 is pretty magical as far as letting you use so many old lenses.

I don't really see why people are so into that particular lens, though - it's not awful but I feel like there are better longish zoom options. The 28-135, I think, is pretty deserving of its reputation though, at least for those of us who can't shell out crazy amounts of cash for a modern zoom. Especially combined with good correction profiles it really holds its own.

Recently bought a few knick knacks for mine.

u/time_bot · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

I've got one of these Ape Cases I use with my a6000 and I love it. Great for taking the camera and a couple extra lenses, or a point and shoot. I use it as a carry on when I fly, and can easily fit a full size water bottle and a tablet in it along with my a6000 and an extra lens. But it's not bulky at all and is very lightweight. The front pocket is great for organizing cables, batteries, etc. It's a very well-made bag.

There's also a slightly smaller variation too.

u/bobobo1618 · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

There is no good cheap adapter. You can have good or cheap but not both.

Bad (no autofocus or aperture control) + cheap ($15): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VVZ4A8G/

Okay (aperture control, AF works decent on many lenses) but a little expensive ($100): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9BKLX8

Good (works a little better on more lenses) but expensive ($400): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0716RHXRB/

I strongly advise you to sell the Canon lens and buy an equivalent Sony lens. Continuing to use Canon glass on a Sony body is going to give you endless frustration. You can get a
Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 for $350ish new if you buy grey market or as low as $240 used.

Even with a top of the line Metabones adapter, you're going to have issues with autofocus speed and reliability. It's really not worth using adapters unless you have a significant collection of glass already or the lens to need just doesn't exist on Sony.

Plus as others have said, that lens is crop and your body is full frame. The Canon lens is worth more to you as cash towards a Sony lens than it is as a lens.

u/mrgnw · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

I got a body from Amazon warehouse deals for $385 a few weeks ago. It said the screen was scratched but I didn't notice any issues. (Looks like prices went up a little though).

Lenses: I just bought an adapter for some old manual focus Canon FD lenses I had laying around. The adapter was $15 and the 3 lenses probably cost me $100ish on eBay.

So I just bought an SD card, 2 batteries, and a dual charger for another ~$50.

I do plan on getting newer lenses later, but so far I'm enjoying the manual set up. A lot of bang for your buck.

Focus peaking can make it easier to focus manually. It highlights what's in focus like this.

u/Noob911 · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

Heres a quick rundown on how to use legacy glass and why you should:
Why? Legacy glass is a) less expensive for the same image quality b) handmade that gives the image you take character (hard to explain this one) and c) is very good to strengthen your attention to detail (as you have to think about where exactly you want the focus to be.

How? If you have an e-mount camera, then all lenses should work with your camera, provided that you get the right adapter. For example, this minolta 50mm f1.7 on ebay needs a minolta md to emount adapter from amazon.

How (to use it)?
Once you have the lens and adapter, then you will have to do 3 things differently then when you are using a kit or native auto focus lens.

  1. you will have to manually focus with the focus ring on the lens. This doesn't really take long to get the hang of, especially for wider-angle lenses, and even mid range lenses.
  2. you will have to put the camera into shutter priority (or manual mode) so that you just have to worry about shutter speed and/or iso.
  3. you will have to use the aperture ring to adjust the aperture manually. I'm assuming you know how aperture works. Basically, theres a ring behind the manual focus ring that allows you to go from wide open to f22 or wtv. I usually just leave it at or near wide open when I do portraits.

What you are talking about is like the LAEA3 LAEA4 adapters that allow you to use a-mount lenses with/without auto focus, respectively. Those are expensive adapters and only get them if you have or are planning to invest in a-mount lenses. For the legacy lenses I'm talking about, any "dumb" adapter will do.
u/youngguap · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

Depends on what kinds of photos you like to take -- landscapes, street photography, portraits, etc.? There's so many vintage lenses it's hard to identify a fast and true 'go to' one.

One I've seen recommended multiple times: Pentax adapter https://www.amazon.com/Concept-Adapter-Pentax-E-Mount-NEX-VG10/dp/B00LECYTL4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1456229211&sr=8-1&keywords=pk+to+nex+adapter&linkCode=sl1&tag=technol0f4-20&linkId=7cd154e160b37c9d9dad82d705bbfd5f

And Pentax 50mm/1.4 lens: https://www.amazon.com/SMC-Pentax-M-1-1-4-50mm/dp/B006CU9V34/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1457739920&sr=8-1&keywords=smc+pentax-m+50mm+f1.4&linkCode=sl1&tag=technol0f4-20&linkId=01e414b697f05a8e78942525af6d89c1

Of course, keep in mind with the crop factor on the a6000 the 50mm lens operates as 75mm. And there'll effectively be no auto-focus, image stabilization, auto-shutter, auto-aperture, etc. Just manual focus and manual exposure -- which can great fun and a good learning tool, but something to keep in mind!

u/EnigmaticPhotograph · 3 pointsr/SonyAlpha

I'd recommend these:

https://www.amazon.com/Meike-Automatic-Extension-Mount-NEX-5R/dp/B00BXZ9ALQ

Meike Automatic Extension Tubes work great and the AF remains good. I use them on my A6500 as well as my A7R and the results are fantastic.

Now, that said, I do have and use actual medical/military lenses dedicated and made for macro work as well. There is a noticeable difference in quality BUT for the average person and even most photographers, the difference is negligible, especially considering the price differences.

u/JoSo_UK · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

It depends on what you need from it. There are two options I'd recommend at very different price points.

If you are shooting video, or manual photography then the Fotodiox adapter is great, well made but simple, and works without issue for a great price:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Camera-Photo/Fotodiox-EF-Sny-Fusion-Adapter-EOS-E-Mount-Camera/B00D9BKLX8/

If you are wanting to use autofocus however, you'll need to look at the much more expensive Metabones adapters. http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB-EF-E-BT4

Just a word of warning though, the AF features are never going to work like they would on a Canon body. AF always works best with native glass.

u/lemonfighter · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

Just to clarify - "full frame" refers to the size of the sensor. It's a property of the sensor inside the camera. Your a5100 and your old Rebel both have APS-C (i.e. not full frame) sized sensors. Hopefully this will make it clearer.

Lenses can be designed for any sensor size, including APS-C and full frame. The APS-C sensor size is also known as "crop". If you use an APS-C (crop) lens on your a5100, the image will cover the sensor exactly. If you use a full frame lens, the image will be larger than the sensor, so it'll look more zoomed in than it would if you used it on a full frame camera.

"Crop" is not something to avoid; it doesn't mean you're losing part of the image or anything like that. Your camera is designed for "crop" (APS-C) lenses, and you should use those unless you have some special reason for wanting a full-frame lens which will be larger, heavier and much more expensive. FYI there is no Sony full-frame 50mm f/1.8 - do you mean the 55mm f/1.8? There is an APS-C 50mm f/1.8, however.

u/themanje · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

I bought this one used: Sony 50mm f/1.8 Mid-Range Lens for Sony E Mount Nex Cameras https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005NX7HY6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dHW.yb5HS3B3S

I love it. I haven't actually pulled kit lens out since getting this one. Every picture, portrait or otherwise, is amazing.

What do you like to shoot?

What lenses/focal ranges are you wanting to cover?

Recommended accessories:

  • Tripod

  • Spare batteries/charger

  • Shutter remote in this style is great value.
u/SandalsMan · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

I recently purchased an a6500 that came with this 50mm lens. I'm really digging this, but I want a lens that I can shoot video with. Anyone know of a great zoom lens that will work for me? Thanks!

u/lightcourse · 3 pointsr/SonyAlpha

I'm a long time advocate of the battery grip, but there are times I rather lose the added weight and bulk while still maintaining a good grip while still wanting to use bigger lenses.

> How is it when you sit the camera on a table?

Best to lay it down like this. https://imgur.com/a/Ftfb6. No big deal imo, but it can rock to either side if you push it. The biggest problem is if you want to use this on a tripod. There's no way to use one with this grip on, but some company solved this with this new product:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B9G6X83/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P9EAC3KD93H7

u/actuallypittsburgh · 1 pointr/SonyAlpha

If you want the ultimate budget option, consider Meike macro extender tubes for e mount. The plastic tubes reduce the minimum focal distance of any lens by attaching between the lens and the body. This effectively turns any lens you already own into a macro lens. When I first started buying gear, I used a vintage Canon FD 50mm with FD-to-E adapter, and these extender tubes. The whole setup cost < $40, and it took beautiful macro shots for wedding rings, insects, etc.

u/Andrewliciouss · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

Super budget lens, i dont recommend it very much. It takes a while to AF

Without saying anything about lens quality here are some price comparisons.

[Nikon D3300 w/ kit] (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Focus-S-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B00HQ4W1QE) $447, [35mm 1.8] (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-Focus-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0) $177, [50mm 1.8] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y1AYAC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=cpc02-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004Y1AYAC) $197

vs

Sony A6000 w/ kit $650, 35mm 1.8 $450, 50mm 1.8 $250

I'm not trying to say one is better than the other, just making a comparison. On the Sony you get OSS with the lenses which drives the price up. If you are trying to save money though, OSS might not be that important.

u/whichgucci · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

I use the Minolta 50mm MD Rokkor 1.4 with a K+F MD-NEX adapter as the lens is fully manual. The reason I chose the Minolta over the Sony lens is mainly due to /u/phillipreeve and the resources he's produced on using older, fully manual lenses with Sony bodies. You really do get bang for your buck and they allow for some great results in a small package.

Though to be fair, I've only used [this version] (http://www.amazon.com/Fotasy-NAMDT-Minolta-E-Mount-Adapter/dp/B003XQ6FDE) so I can't speak to the build quality of their other adapters.

It's cheap as hell but it's still very sharp. It's my every day lens since it's so compact and perfect for most types of photography.

yeah thanks dude, really really super helpful. I think the whole photography thing is so vast it's quite difficult to find what's 'right' if that makes sense, but im not one to blame my equipment either, i've taken some fantastic shots with my kit lens, and even with my phone, a samsung S8.
