> I am choosing to leave out side lights from my first build to reduce the amount of variables that may give me electrical/heat issues. Will this significantly affect my yield to the point where I should be seriously reconsidering this decision?

Not really. The sidelights are a nice and cheap upgrade, but probably affects more trichome production than yield.

> Which of those two fans do you think will work better for me? If these are both horrible, what other fans should I be looking at? I am looking at doing a DIY carbon filter since it seems to be pretty straightforward. What sort of DIY carbon filters do you suggest? How powerful should fans be to deal with a carbon filter in a standard-size space bucket?

Its really hard to recommend those small fans for filters, my advice would be to get an inline fan and filter and not overcomplicate things. ONA gel is also a good solution for odors.

> I am using white buckets rather than mylar because it seems white buckets work fine and mylar can create hot spots. Is this accurate?

White buckets are a fine choice, but mylar does not create hot spots. That is a myth. Check /r/HandsOnComplexity for the science behind that.

> I've read that buckets are much cheaper at stores than they are on Amazon. Around how much should I be spending for 4x white 5 gallon buckets? Are there any other items in my build that I can get for cheaper in person?

Try to get them for free. I've never paid for a 5gal bucket. At least in my city there are a lot of 5gal buckets near construction sites, to give one example. You just have to know where to look.

> I am planning on ordering seeds from Nirvana. Is this a good vendor or is there a different one that I should be using?

Should be OK, most big vendors are fine.

> I've found plenty of resources about space buckets on this subreddit and the website, but not much on the actual process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket. Apart from the setup, is there any difference in the process of growing Marijuana inside of a space bucket and growing it another way? Is there any sort of guide or subreddit dedicated to what's needed to go from seed to harvest you can point me towards?

Check the bucket plant guide for tips from the community. The best kind of experience will be your first hand experience. You should expect to kill some plants before mastering the proccess. In a Space Bucket, the main challenge is keeping the plant as short as possible. If you keep it low the lighting will be more effective, and the flowers more awesome.

> Any general advice? Anything I'm missing?

Materials:

Three 5-gallon buckets and one lid (Ace Hardware has white ones for $4, if you don't want orange or blue from HD or Lowe's.) All three cost $12-13.

THESE LEDS from Amazon. $13.59

THIS POWER SUPPLY, the Supernight LED Charger. It is $20.99. You will also need a power cord for it, which I recommend just going to literally ANY thrift store and picking out a nice three-pronged power cord. I'm fairly certain that any three-pronged power cord will work, so if you have one you're not using at home, you can use that.

THIS LED GROW LIGHT, which is 300w and cost $50.99.

TWO of these PC fans. Total cost $10.04.

I bought one of this black duct tape, one of this foil tape (although I recommend buying two, as I ran out with my first roll and had to buy another from the store), and also some double-sided tape, because, if your LED strip is like mine, the adhesive backing is almost nonexistent and the tape becomes necessary.

Oh, and good-quality velcro adhesive patches!

You will also need a power drill and a sturdy box cutter.

I started by taping the entire interior of one bucket with the foil tape, save for the bottom portion where the soil goes. Then I covered the outside with the black tape. Next I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage.

Then I took two of the other buckets and used a ruler's width to mark a cut line right below the lip of each bucket to create spacers. The process of cutting the plastic buckets was definitely the worst part of the process, especially since I didn't have a great cutter, so if you're getting a new one, don't be too cheap. I got this one and it's blade locking function no longer works after this project, so be advised. I lined the spacers with foil tape.

Using the remains of one of the other buckets, I trimmed more of the bucket down so that it's now only the bottom and stands 5" tall. I found some random large screws in my toolbox and drilled them around the circumference, which allows the rest of the bucket to be easily lifted off of the drain pan.

I then drew a circle about 1 cm in from the lip of the lid and cut that out. The light fits perfectly on it. There is lots of light escape at the rim, but it looks pretty cool, so I don't mind it for now.

For the power supply, I cut off the female end of the three-pronged cord I got from Arc Thrift and stripped the wires down a bit. There were three wires inside, green (ground), white (neutral), and black (live), which I then connected to driver. I was certain to unplug during any wire-play and I hope everyone else is, too.

The sidelights were sort of a struggle. I used a scrap of the buckets, like maybe 4-5 inches of bucket from about half-way down to a quarter, so not much. I then lined the inside with the double-sided tape, cutting strips, in an effort to conserve tape, which feels very stable. I drilled a hole and fed the cable through, then determined the best spot to drill a hole on the exterior bucket. It's about at the center of the bucket, or in my case, 13 cm down from the lip. Finally, I fed the LED cable through the exterior hole and the lights were basically in place, where it would sit right above the soil.

I didn't want to have to extend any cords, so I found an ideal spot to place the driver on the exterior so that all cables (LED strip, both fans) could reach their appropriate ports. I fixed the velcro onto the bucket and the driver and tidied the wires with some more duct tape.

Finally, I sealed the edges of both fans, inside and outside, with their respective tapes.

I'm pretty sure that's everything I've done to this point, but if I think of anything else, I'll add it. I'm likely going to black-out the spacers to reduce light leak.

Please let me know if you have any advice, questions, comments!

Thank you /r/SpaceBuckets, for the inspiration and wisdom!

Lights: I have the mars hydro 300 (132 true watts) as my main light on the top, and plan to add a couple strips for side lighting in the near future.

Ventilation: As you may see from the pictures, I have the heat exhaust on the top side. The exhaust is being pulled into a secondary tote. In the secondary tote I have a large carbon filter attached to a 6 inch inline fan with variable speed control. This kit. Definitely overkill but I like the room for expansion.

I plan to start growing in a 3 gallon smart pot knock off, with some ak-48 autoflower seeds.

I have really enjoyed watching this community grow through the years.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful contributions. Guys like /u/Ekrof, SAG, /u/Halfmpty, /u/exactly25smeckles, and the rest have really inspired me to try this for myself.

I would like to add some filtration to my passive intake, any suggestions?

u/its_the_perfect_name · 3 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I forgot to mention that I think its totally neat that you did this. It's a good experiment.

I don't have one I'd recommend but I'd avoid another eBay bulb - maybe this one instead? It seems to have good reviews and it's not too expensive.

Daylight CFLs put out a good spectrum for plants and you'll probably always get good results using one, but LEDs are awesome because you can consume far less power and put out the absolute most effective spectrum for plant growth. I don't know whether you'll necessarily get better results with the LED than the CFL but you'll certainly be able to get comparable results.

u/G_DuBs · 5 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I have used this one before: https://www.amazon.com/Kingwin-FPX-001-Controller-Controls-Independent/dp/B00DP9WRZY

And it works great! You can hook up to 4 fans to it and to control the speed just turn the knob.

Then you will wanna buy something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-SATA-IDE-Adapter-CB-ISA225-U3/dp/B01E7EPKUO

So the fan controller has a MOLEX adapter for power. The data to usb has a MOLEX to power cable in the box (I’ve had a few and the vantech one that I listed should have an inline power button).

I’ve tried splicing the cables and although that works this is far far easier and effective. I hope you see this before you buy to many other solutions because I personally think this is the easiest.

Good luck and happy growing :)

CFM won't matter regarding if it can push air through the filter. What you want to look for is the static pressure rating of the fan. It will be in the unit of mmH2O. Try to get a fan rated at 6 mmH2O or greater. Basically, the motor must be strong enough to push air through a thicker medium like a filter.

My fan (Delta AFB1212HHE-F00) is a 120mm PC fan rated at 9mmH2O and 120 CFM. My other fan (Scythe Kaze 3000) is also 120mm PC fan rated at 6mmH2O and 133 CFM. Both push through my homemade carbon scrubber.

Also, from what I've read, you don't want to use a carbon 'fabric' like those sheets. They wear out quite quickly and making a filter from small activated carbon granules would be superior. You might be able to find one relatively cheap like this. You could attach a 6-to-4 inch rubber reducer like this and let it sit on top of your fan on the cabinet. I made my scrubber out of an atrium grate, pantyhose, rubber reducer and the carbon and it sits right on top of my bucket with no need to seal around it as the air pushes through nicely with not much back pressure.

u/monkeybusiness124 · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I had to buy 2 rolls of black tape to check her the whole outside twice and make sure no light came through. I used 1.5 rolls but I can’t buy 1.5 rolls. It uses a lot of tape to get a full light seal.

I don’t know what tents you are using, you can find tents 45-55 that’s are 4-5 times the size of a bucket. A $90 tent is like 3x3 or bigger, can’t compare that to a bucket size grow.
here is a tent for $45.99 That is maybe the size of 3 bucket builds

Well I understand you may find it annoying, but every time I do I get direct messages asking for link and then agreeing it’s a better investment that buying and building a bucket. I worked a few hours a day for a week to build my bucket.

It’s a great DIY and I had fun building it, but you can do more for the investment if you consider time to make it and all. Space buckets are a great beginner hobby, but so can a 2x2

u/Newh90 · 5 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Hey! You can build your bucket in whatever way you would like. I suggest you check out spacebuckets.com for build ideas from others. There are so many ways to build and whatever suits your needs will be best to build for yourself. :)

The container adjust could work, but you'll need to make sure that it is all secure so it doesn't tip or fall over or anything.

  1. You need to buy ph up and ph down. This can be found in the hydroponics section of any good plant store. Something like this

  2. It depends on whether you're in veggie or flower mode, but usually anywhere from 3-4 days. Maybe 5 days max, so yea you'll need someone to water them for sure if its more than 5 days.
u/Ser_NSFW · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Hey man, happy birthday!

For lighting, check out this MarsHydro 300W LED that's been on sale for the last few months for $89.99 (might be Prime-only?). It is absolutely worth it.

I successfully grew three autoflowers in a 5 gallon bucket and they each had their own peat moss starter pot (you can plant the starter pot directly into soil), but they didn't get too big. I'd start with one autoflower at a time till you're comfortable with the grow process and feel like you want to move up.

I you want to just grow 2-3 plants from the start, consider using two 18-gallon plastic totes stacked rim to rim (like a GNK Power Droid from Star Wars) - you'll have plenty of space, and it's not much different from a 5-gallon build!

u/SuperAngryGuy · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Lime is used to raise the pH in soil and the benefit is that it acts like a basic buffer. Otherwise a mineral base like potassium hydroxide is used (this is what I use). In a hydro store this will be called "pH up". These are actual brand names.

http://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Up-Down/dp/B005LWS5Q8

You generally do not want a basic soil. A pH of 6.5 will cover cannabis and most all plants and is pretty ideal. Have a look at this pH chart. You can see where too high or too low of a pH causes certain nutrients to become less available to a plant.

http://organicgarden.org.uk/8259/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ph_nutrient_chart.jpg

I'm not an organic person and use a plain soil with hydroponic fertilizers at a pH of 6.5 or so. Since I do have limited hands on experience with organic soils it's hard for me to give advice on them. A popular organic soil for cannabis is one of the Fox Farm series.

Hmmm... I did not. Though, I thought it was typical to have 12 on, 12 off light cycles. Is that not correct? Should I just get one that is ideal for longer hours? Thanks for the help!

Edit: This looks like a better option, no?

u/wobblyparadox · 11 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Combination of parts from Amazon and ebay. Not all of them are necessary, fittings and Brute trashcans and such are from Home Depot.

u/frankyfigggs · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I don't have an answer to your question, but I would like to add a question of my own. Should I go with standard white on the color? I have seen several buckets with blue or other colors. I assume that red would be best, but what do I know.
PS. I see some waterproof strips for $7.85/free shipping on amazon.

This is what I have. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KMETHS?psc=1 It's got great reviews (add another for myself), and is $10 or so cheaper than other 4" filters. I believe it's also got easy to access rivets, so when it comes time to change the carbon, you can drill them out easy, and replace them with some sheet metal screws, and you're good to go.

u/ShhhIGrowWeed · 5 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Honestly I thought the same thing, but it was a lot easier than I thought. Without having to wire anything, it was all pretty common handiwork with a drill or a Dremel saw. It's a GardenMate 8 Gal grow bag

I imagine you could purchase these activated charcoal sheets that you can cut to size! Tape a plate with a hole over it and you should be able to cut any size you want. The fan you spec'd looks like it should be able to handle the load that the charcoal filter will cause (it is going to be like trying to breathe through a straw rather than just your mouth).

Another option would be something like this where you have an all in one filter/blower system. It's more money but it will handle all that obstruction better. Alternatively you can go to a harware store and buy an inline duct booster. You should be able to control the fan speed with a big triac or possibly PWM signal.

So I’m a first time grower and always obsessed with the idea of a pc case style grow. But I decided this would be a better idea. The bucket is a 7 gallon bucket with a sealing lid. I took a lamp toggle switch lighbulb holder and put a black magic led growlight in it drilled a hole in the lid and it was a tight fit. Then I siliconed around it. My plan is to use these 3000 rpm fans https://www.amazon.com/Scythe-DFS123812H-3000-Ultra-Kaze-120mm/dp/B001JKNMBE
And mount 2 for intake and one for exhaust using the hi tech mounts for 120mm fanshttps://www.hightech3d.com/product-page/pc-fan-to-5-gallon-bucket-adapter
And the carbon scrubber attachment they sell too.
Not to sure what to use for a strain. I want something that has really low Oder and is small. Not too concerned about a big yield as this is a trial run for me. I’m also thinking about trying to grow basil in there as a trial run to see if I properly filter the smell and if the whole thing works and whatnot. Please poke holes in my plan. Thanks (:

>Can you explain your buckets air flow and air filtration?

My bucket has two passive 120mm intakes that are covered with mesh filters and a single 120mm exhaust in the lid that connects to a 4" flange with dryer ducting. There is a 4" 190 CFM In-Line fan connected to a 4x12 Carbon Filter. I also have a variable fan controller on the in-line fan. I run mine at about half power.

>What do you have your plant in? Planter and soil on the bottom of bucket ect?

I use a 5g nursery pot. For my next grow I will be switching to a smart pot to avoid it getting rootbound.

>I was thinking of extending a 5g bucket under the brute can so the soil is under the setup and the plant itself is in the brute only allowing more space to grow.

If you're gonna do that you're better off getting one of those 5g DWC setups. With that said, I'd advise against doing that. Reason being is you add another layer of complexity in that you have to figure out how to support the brute and you run risks with light leaks. This also puts the brute much higher than you are which can make servicing/watering awkward.

I just have mine sitting on the bottom of the bucket in the pot. The newer style Brutes cause you to lose a few inches but if you can budget to buy two of them and use one as a spacer, it works well.

>Would that work or would I have an issue with temperature difference between roots and plant?

I am not experienced enough to say yay or nay but I doubt it?

Thanks! I was actually tossing around the idea of using this for veg and this for flower

The goal is to keep the plant as short as possible during the vegetative state which is why I was going to go for the blue LED. I've also read that red lights help the flower stage which is why I am leaning towards the second one. As far as addressing the heat, I was probably going to drill a few holes above the bulbs so air can pass through, cooling them.

Can't wait to begin planting.

u/magicmushie · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

well PC fans are already designed for small spaces. you're only trying to ventilate a few cubic feet of air with a space bucket/tote, after all. I've read that the rule for grow tents is to replace all the air inside every three minutes. an average 80mm PC fan is rated for 30CFM or so, and 5 gallons is only 0.67 cubic feet - even a tiny 80mm fan is plenty. they're also quieter than desk fans, and some manufacturers make high static pressure PC fans that can handle a small carbon filter.

wiring fans to AC adapters does require a bit more spending and work, but AC fans like this one are plug-and-play, though a bit louder than I would want.

I second this. This is what I use to filter my 3x3 tent.

And just used a hose clamp to clamp a piece of the carbon filter over the intake of the fan. So it sucks air from the tent outside. Keeps my tent at perfect temps and scrubs smell.

Yeah I felt bad having her crammed in there but she did very very well! Only problem was tiny case of spider mites but I took care of it right away with neem oil. The light was one I got without a lot of research. It was one of these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GNWK2XO/ref=oh_aui_i_d_old_o1_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also had a led strip in there

Carbon filter eliminated nearly all odor. I went the first 3 or so weeks without it, then the smell started coming on strong as it was starting to preflower. Bought the filter and it was night and day. Highly suggest it.

Yeah, most 120mm pc fans don't have enough static pressure to run any significant amount of air through a carbon filter. CFM doesn't mean much unless you have static pressure behind it to back it up. You could either opt for an inline fan like this for about $70 which would be more than enough for your setup, or you could try subbing out your pc fans for a couple of these bad boys which run ~$15 apiece but offer an impressive 133 CFM while offering higher static pressure ratings than any other 120mm pc fans I've seen with the same price/dB rating.

My roommate gave me the lights but this looks pretty close to the same thing

I found the tent but it appears the price has jumped. Probably due to the new demand from popular legislation.

Ekrof on the article you talk about UFO lights and you posted a link to an 'Apollo 180W' light. You also state that 135W lights are recommended, but when I go to the 135 Apollo light link on amazon there is a section where it says "Actual Power Draw: 90 Watts" Should we consider to choose the 135 watt light based on the "Actual Power Drawn" or the wattage that is advertised on the tittle of the product? For example

If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks you can go with something like this.

At full blast, fans, LEDs & lights, it uses 100w (I plugged it into a Kill-A-Watt)

2 months Veg, 3 months flower

Produced 1.8 oz (53g) of dried flower, after trimming from stems.

Totally worth it, but the place !smelled! crazy-strong from veg through flower (gelato is much stinkier than any of my previous grows)

A grow tent. It's going to be more efficient to use one larger space for all your plants; you'll only need 1 exhaust system, 1 lighting system, etc. I grow 2 plants at a time in a small grow tent. I use 1 Marshydro 300, and get a yield of 60g cured bud per plant. I think with more light I could get a bigger yield, though.

Do what he said but buy a digital ph meter and test the ph of your water. Some people have naturally high ph water, some have naturally low ph. You need to test to find out then figure out what you need to adjust ph.

I would also recommend "ph up" or "ph down" for hydroponic applications. http://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Up-Down/dp/B005LWS5Q8 Vinegar is fine but not great for plants.

u/Tri0ptimum · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

They advertise it as 132 watt actual:

https://smile.amazon.com/MarsHydro-Spectrum-Certification-Hydroponic-Greenhouse/dp/B00XC3LBI2/

More than enough for a Brute build, along with some side lighting strips for the bottom maybe :D.

This if i was to buy it would it work too?

u/myfrstbkt · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Awesome. So I don't have to worry about limiting current then? I can just put some molex ends on the LED strips and plug them in to the PSU? Good to go?
As far as the UFO goes, it doesn't seem like a money saver to me...

At ~$2.25/panel

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/20pcs-White-48SMD-Car-Interior-panel-LED-T10-Festoon-2-Adapters-12V-LED-panel-5050-48/1778208995.html

I'm looking at $45 for 20 of them.

I found a rating for the 5050 LED individually at 12v rated for 19 lumens each.

Say I can use all 20 of them somehow that's 18,240 Lumens right? I can power them off my existing 12v ATX power supply with no worries. So why buy a standalone light?

I was considering this UFO for ~$85:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00INM0BPG/

But multiple things stopped me:

  1. I don't really know how to compare the different UFO lights on the market.
  2. I don't see a Lumen or Lux rating so how do I know how much light it will put out.
  3. If it shits the bed, I have to throw it out and buy a new one instead of replacing a single panel.
