I think there are 2 places you could begin.

The first being the original origin of Al Simmons. You could read this with the various sources from other commentors, via back issues or the collected Origin trades (starting from #1 and onward). They are all excellent ways to begin and are awesome collectors pieces to any collection.

The second spot would be to begin at the Endgame story arc (#185-196). This story arc begins a brand new Spawn saga starting at issue 185. If you want the good intro and background of the current Spawn run, this is a good place to begin. After you finish reading that, then you can begin with the New Beginning arc (#200 and onward), which continues after Endgame with a new team. This is where Spawn is currently headed. After that, you could probably jump into the current issues (I think its currently at 245).

Honestly, both places are good to pick up, it all depends whether what kind of stories you want to read. If you want to see the original spawn, with the more action-y stories and exaggerated art style (as well as the original origin), then start at the Origins books/trades. If you want to get into the newer, darker, noir-esque stories filled with intrigue accompanied a much darker and realistic art style, begin at Endgame/New Beginnings.

Hope I helped!

Always good to hear someone wants to get into the series. You can purchase the single issues here, and lots pop up on eBay all the time. If you want to read them in trades, you can get them off Amazon (or any good comic retailer) here for the TPB. Unfortunately they have stopped printing the origins collection (rumour has it they will be doing a reprint in the future), so the first Hardcover volume has skyrocketed in price. We also have a weekly book club going, which usually has links to .cbr files.

Hope you enjoy the series, it really is great.

What you're looking for is the Spawn Origins Hardcover collections. And McFarlane has been pretty good about releasing them on a regular basis. We're already up to book 9 I believe, getting us all the way up to issue 112 (about halfway through the entirety of the series).

For about $20 (less than the cover cost of individual issues) you'll be getting around 12 issues per book. They're all still in print (as far as I know) so they're easy to find or at least easy to have ordered in.

There is a TPB version, however these collect half the issues AND DO NOT CONTAIN SOME ISSUES AT ALL (e.g. 9 and 10 are not in TPB 2), and aren't always half the price. But if mobility and super casual reading are your thing, these are right up your alley.

In regards to massive compendiums, there are these Deluxe Editions at triple to quadruple the price of the other hardcovers, but only collect double the issues. Also, they're quite large and unwieldy for reading, in my opinion. Good collector's item though.

tl;dr The Spawn Origins Hardcover collections are what you're looking for.

Awesome collection. I used to have some shelves dedicated to my collection but turned out to be a bitch to dust and clean. I used a bit of museum wax to help keep the figures in place. Definitely helped during cleaning without accidentally knocking them over. Or during an earthquake.

I got most of my volumes on Amazon, but I got them a year or so ago and I think they are getting a little harder and harder to find. I was also able to find some harder to find volumes on ebay and I got really lucky with a Craigslist score. Craigslist is not reliable at all, but if you find something it's usually huge.

If you're having trouble finding specific volumes, then look for the individual comics in the volume. Each volume has 6-7 comics and sometimes spending a little more to buy the comics individually is worth the time not spent scouring the internet for the volume you need.

Different user, but in a similar boat. I'm deep in my friend's Marvel comics right now, so I probably won't jump in just yet. Out of curiosity, though, would "around 100" be referring to this book?

you can always start at a library or looking at online thrift book shops

or the spawn compendium, its good to get the story of it but its all black and white and we all know spawns artstyle trives on colors.

I think Amazon had one for around $30.

There is also the Spawn Compendium which is the first 50 issues all in one book.

In my opinion it is way too huge to read though and it is in black and white so you are missing out on a lot of the art.
