That might be in an area with lots of competition and that would be a starting price. Typically gigabit for Charter Spectrum is 125.99/mo for just the internet speed only. You can see what your area is officially charging for each package on the official 'rate card' from the company here.

It also tells you right here that there are zero fees for modems ever, and only wi-fi router fees (or combo units that are both a modem and a wi-fi router, but I am not sure there are any combo units for gigabit.)

The $200 initial fee for gigabit (even if you have been a customer for more than a decade) is typically NOT waived. They place that charge to act as a preventative measure so fewer customers buy it (not kidding, it's because they don't have everything upgraded yet to serve gigabit to every customer.)

If you do not have gigabit (I sincerely doubt you do) then I would either go for the CM600 for an officially approved one up to the 400 meg package or the TC-7650 which is basically the same thing from another company.

I want to stress that there is no modem rental fee from Spectrum. If you DO get them to give you a modem, make sure it is a DOCSIS 3.1 capable one. I THINK most areas are only giving out the ones I mentioned (Hitron/Technicolor/Ubee.) The Ubee one is nice because unlike the other two, you can access the modem signals and stuff to diagnose issues as a customer. It would probably be better to just get one from Spectrum if they are giving out DOCSIS 3.1 modems in your area, because they are superior and will be future-proofed for new upgrades.

No sure about ebay as I have never used it however general pricing across the board new AC1200s average $50 to $60. The only one i have personal experience with is this one and I had many customers satisfied with it when I worked at Staples

Edit: this is the correct link it didnt copy and my original comment had the wrong one.

But if you see an AC1200 on ebay your will to pay for just look up the model new on websites and skim reviews if most are positive then you will be fine.

Hi OP

Your router looks very low end:

Are you paying a monthly fee for that router?

>1350 sq ft ranch

Walls are standard drywall, no concrete/brick/metal?

>Is the standard equipment just shitty,

I think so, that router looks weak tbh

>should I get a modem and router or just a router?

I think spectrum provides modem for free? If that is the case, recommend you keep it, it's not the weak link.

Router:

Or because wife and budget:

Or archer a7/c7 from amazon.

>While I want to do this it is a tough sell to my wife, since our entire purpose of switching providers and getting rid of cable was to save money.

If you are paying to rent a router every month, buying one will save money in the long run.

Oh: if you can run an ethernet cable to the PS4, that would be best.

>Switch back to ATT and pay the same amount of money for an inferior internet speed

Again, I think the weak link is the router. ATT combo modem/router isn't bad, but isn't great, and is apparently better than the sagemcom

Also:

maybe post this in r/homenetworking? I think it's a router issue, not just spectrum's service.

Get a new modem. Before the installation person came over I looked up the list of approved modems that had the speed I wanted and bought it off Amazon. I've never needed to reset it. Here's a link.
