600mg of Lithium Orotate is on the low-end pharmaceutically, but not Nootropically.

There are all sorts of claims and studies, many of which still need to be corroborated, indicating that Lithium modulates Dopaminergic and Gabaergic transmission, it can reduce available Norepinephrine, it can enhance Serotonin function, it's neuroprotective, the list is endless.

So there is a benefit to just taking a "regular" dose of Lithium. Tons of people report feeling calmer and more focused from regular doses of 10mg to 120mg of Lithium Orotate. Magnesium works fairly similarly to Lithium, and you could try combining the two, but Lithium is more potent by volume.

However, I'm suggesting that you try it for mood regulation rather than Nootropic value.

I'm essentially suggesting that you take a pharmaceutical-dose of Lithium (not quite, but you know what I mean), using a Nootropic-brand of Lithium. You need to be careful, because Lithium Orotate isn't as well studied as Lithium Carbonate (though, many claim Lithium Orotate is safer). It may take longer to clear, meaning that it could buildup in your body and slowly raise your blood-Lithium level over time. It may be more bioavailable than Lithium Carbonate, meaning that my comparison of the equivalent dosages is off. Based on the studies and anecdotal reports I read, my comparison of dosages seems more or less "accurate", so the buildup is probably the bigger concern. For example, maybe you should only be taking 600mg every 2 days, because it has twice the half-life of Lithium Carbonate. I can't find enough information on it to tell you one way or the other.

Plus, you're claiming that you aren't experiencing hypomania, which means your therapeutic dose would be much lower than someone with mood-cycling.

It's not something that is particularly risky. Like I said, the therapeutic dose for mood regulation is 0.6 mmol/L, and I'm only suggesting you aim for 0.1 mmol/L. It is highly unlikely that you're going to experience Lithium toxicity, even if it does have a longer half-life and/or higher bioavailability. I'm just trying to give you all of the available information, because I'm not a doctor, and you need to be your own advocate here. If you experience acute Lithium toxicity, you'll know pretty quickly. You'll feel sick, dizzy, confused, weak, etc. And if that happens, you just lower the dose or stop taking it.

What I would recommend is, you give 600mg Lithium Orotate a try for 3 months or so. At the end of that 3 months, I'd recommend visiting your doctor and asking her to check your Lithium levels. She'll probably ask "why?", and you'll just tell her "you've been trying an over-the-counter Lithium supplement, and you want to make sure you aren't overdoing it". She might give you some speech about "self-medicating", but whatever, Lithium is literally just an alkali metal on the periodic table of elements (this entire subreddit is about self-medicating). Then, if you're liking the way it makes you feel (or, more importantly, if it's helping) you should ask your general practitioner or Psychiatrist to put you on the real stuff, so you can see what feels like in the 0.4 to 0.6 mmol/L range. Or, if you're not worried about it, just adjust your dosage yourself using the Lithium Orotate (but it's going to get expensive doing it over-the-counter).

I use to take Lithium for some of the same reasons I'm recommending it to you. I was too goofy, I'd talk too much, I'd talk too loud, I'd say whatever popped into my head. I'd encounter a debate in a discussion, and even though I felt like I was being inquisitive or curious, other people felt like I was "trying to argue with them" or "invalidating their opinion". I came off as abrasive, when I was just trying to talk, have fun, make new friends, etc. I got my blood-Lithium level up to 0.7 mmol/L, and my life improved dramatically. I didn't lose my personality or urge to talk (which can happen if your dose is too high), but instead, I became capable of having "more normal", toned-down discussions. More women started showing interest in me, and more men and women wanted to be my friend. Shit was a fucking miracle.

Anyways, sorry for writing so much. I write for a living, and it's easy for me to pound this stuff out in a couple of minutes. I would recommend this brand: https://www.amazon.com/NCI-Advanced-Research-Lithium-Orotate/dp/B000VHCU8M/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lithium%2Borotate%2BNieper&qid=1558391948&s=gateway&sr=8-3&th=1

The fish oil actually looks pretty good according to labdoor. They gave it a B- grade, but only because the pills only contain 360mg omega 3 per 1200mg fish oil. They make some higher concentrated omega 3 fish oil pills that are like 80-90% omega 3 but they are much more expensive. You can find them on amazon.

The Nature's Made pills are fine though, you'll just get a little more non-omega 3 oil, but that doesn't hurt. Dose should be ~1 gram omega 3 per day, so you could take up to 3 of those nature made pills per day and it'd be fine.

Fish oil is a good supp to take in general but it's not one that you're gonna see any acute effects from (it's not gonna give you a noticeable boost in "ambition" like you were looking for in your original post), especially if you already eat fish. It is good for you cardiovascular system and brain though.

L-theanine on the other hand you might see some acute benefits from. It acts on glutamate receptors in the brain and increases levels various neurotransmitters. It is also is supposed to increase levels of BDNF and NGF, which are hormones that play a role in neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. I occasionally take L-theanine in the evening (200-400mg) to wind down after work. I find it fairly relaxing. Definitely needs to be taken on an empty stomach with water though to see effects. If you take it in the morning with coffee/caffeine it kinda takes the edge of the caffeine buzz and can really help you get in the zone and focus. It's pretty easy to find good l-theanine, I got mine from liftmode, it seems to work fine. There's a list of reliable suppliers on the "Beginner's guide to nootropics" link if you wanna look at where to get anything else too.

Sounds like you have a pretty classic case of ADHD... Which, as you said, there is no quick fix.

  • Typical ADHD suggestions are make a routine/schedule and follow it, every single day. As soon as you don't, you tend to fall a few massive steps backward.

  • Meditation is huge for those with ADHD, it helps with focus and the anxiety.

  • Also reward systems... Constantly remind yourself to focus, and when you do, give yourself some form of personal reward.

  • SLEEP, fix your sleep patterns. Following the schedule you made will greatly help with this. A lot of ADHD individuals have the problem of both falling and staying asleep. Which means you get very little REM sleep, which shits on your memory, and takes a huge toll on your focus/alertness.

As far as mitigating the changes your amph made to your body:

  • I would suggest supplementing Tyrosine to replace the dopamine stores that were under constant stress while taking your meds. It's rate limited, so it doesn't really matter how much you take, it will only make what you need. So if your body is still behind in DA production, you will notice a definite change. Otherwise, you won't notice anything, and that means you probably don't need to supplement it.

  • A magnesium supplement, as you said, is amazing for the TMJ you experience during and after amph. But it also helps with sleep and overall tissue Mg+ stores. This is important as amph uses up your Mg+ stores like crazy. It also has a large calming effect that will help your anxiety. However, don't use citrate, it's primarily a laxative... While citrate will raise your blood Mg+ levels, a giant portion of it will be shat out. I would suggest glycinate, personally. You also have to be aware of the brand you're using. Some brands only MIX elemental Mg+ with some form of protein, which basically means that in the bottle, it's "magnesium citrate/glycinate/etc", but they're not bound together. This reduces the bioavailability to be complete shite. This one is excellent: http://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Elemental/dp/B000BD0RT0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421094050&sr=8-1&keywords=doctors+best+magnesium

  • I would also suggest N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), it will help with obsessive/ritualistic behaviors, which will also help with anxiety etc. It is also a strong antioxidant and helps the liver... Amazing to take before drinking. Some people are making a big fuss right now about the pulmonary effects of it, but I've been using it for quite a while with no issues.

  • I also take a choline supplement before bed (Alpha-GPC), it has GREATLY helped with reaching REM sleep, and also the staying asleep factor.

  • Melatonin is another antioxidant and helps with sleep a lot.

  • Fish oil, 600mg+ PER capsule minimum, with a higher content of EPA to DHA (I shoot for a 2:1 ratio). It helps with the stress your heart was under, great for overall health, and helps with focus issues.

  • Theanine, especially if you're a coffee drinker (which most people with ADHD are). Helps with stress, overall calms you down. It's also amazingly synergistic with caffeine.

    Hope this helps.

Addressing your first question, before buying any of these nootropics, I researched thoroughly and have not experienced any tolerance issues myself because I took necessary precautions in order to prevent that from happening. The only substances I have heard of causing the build of tolerance are pramiracetam and phenylpiracetam, the latter more so than any other substance. But this information, I have found, is anecdotal and these noots affect people differently than others. I have heard of cases of tolerance of phenyl can build in 3-4 straight days and pram in 1-2 weeks. I only take phenyl when I know I will have a challenging day ahead i.e on exam days. I cycle pram with other racetams, taking it 2 times per week, give or take. As for cycling, I would not take more than 2-3 racetams in a day, as it is not necessary. I usually take aniracetam daily, and cycle pram, oxi, and piracetam. Once again, you will have to experiment with these and find the cycling schedule that is most effective for you, or not cycle at all.

As for the capsule issue, it is definitely not necessary to use capsules. I used to use just powder and that has worked fine; I usually just dissolved my stack in water (I now just make my own capsules, for convenience). Powder is also much cheaper per dose. I have also heard of dissolving the powder sublingually, but I have not tried it. But if you buy the powder, you will most definitely have to buy a 0.001g scale, and it must be accurate, as many doses of noots will be in the 10 mg range. I recommend the [Gemini-20 scale] (http://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-GEMINI-20-Portable-MilliGram/dp/B0012TDNAM). Semax comes in the form of a nasal spray, don't know if you are comfortable with that, just a forewarning, if you decide to research. As I said before, I make my own capsules, and fit my whole stack into one pill, which I find convenient. There is a kit which I use on powdercity.com, if you are interested, which explains everything about capsule making.

Definitely a good choice to research everything before buying and definitely don't trust just one report, even data. You're welcome and once again, good luck.

Ginkgo Biloba.

Curcumin with a source of Piperine like ground pepper for absorption.

DHA found in Fish oils. The higher the better.

Magnesium. I recommend this brand.
https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Absorption-Magnesium-Supplement/dp/B000BD0RT0/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1495346427&sr=8-1&keywords=magnesium+absorption

My experience with lions mane was fairly positive. I heard mixing it with some sort of fat like coconut oil you can increase it's absorption. I always made an MCT like hot tea with it and it worked wonders for energy, replaced my coffee for a while.

Hope your friend gets better!

they look pretty good. looks like they're materials are from China which is good.

If you have their product, run a starch test on it (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DT9BDP4/) with iodine. Super easy. That will show the presence of any carrier material. It's quite common for products out of China to use carriers like dextrose and maltodextrin as fillers.

It's also not organic so there's potential for pesticide residues.

When everything is 10:1 extracts, I take a bit of concern there as mushrooms are generally 90% water so fresh to dried is 10:1. I've seen it used as clever marketing where they are saying 10:1 (10kg fresh to 1kg powder) when it's really just 1:1 (1kg dried to 1kg powder). Also with regards to extract ratios, if you don't have active compound measurements to go along with it, they are pretty much meaningless.

u/slimbender · 1 pointr/StackAdvice

No, you don't need them perfect but dosing 400mg instead of 200mg is that much more easy. Would just make you a bit sleepy maybe. A great deal of Nootropics are nontoxic, so overdosing is rarely a concern if you understand what you're taking.

What about a sub $10 scale. Works great! http://amzn.com/B0012LOQUQ

Guarana is a natural form of caffeine. I dont get the jitters from it. The ginseng I mentioned is very good. I also recommend the mushroom supplement. This is what I take, try reading some of the reviews.

Here is a brain stack I think is great for people who damaged their brains from drug use and multiple concussions. Like me! Also applies to healthy brains to keep them healthy.

u/Glitch_Modulator · 2 pointsr/StackAdvice

Absolutely. I work a M-F 8-5 type job in IT, so I typically get up around the same time and stick to a decent morning routine and schedule in the first place. Having a good routine and preparation mindset is key for ADHD control. I take my Vyvanse shortly after I'm up and out of the shower, since it needs time to kick in and doesn't need to be taken with food. I take the stack 2x a day: with breakfast and coffee in the AM (and then second multivitamin and ALCAR with lunch) and then the rest without food or maybe a light snack at bed time.
Here's how I break down the stack:

  • B vitamin sources (I get mine per multivitamin): Solgar VM-75 2x daily (taken at breakfast and lunch)
  • DHA/omega fatty acid source: DHA NOW Foods DHA-500, 180 Softgels https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003O1U77I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_IxMjyb0H4A8JW
This doubles as my omega 3 and fatty acid source,
which is THE FUCKING CRUCIAL ingredient in this stack and ADD/ADHD mitigation overall. Take this at breakfast and bed time. The research is out there on how much the brain loves omegas.
  • (Triacetyl)Uridine - Cardiovascular Research Uridine 25 mg 60 Caps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005NHSKWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2CMjybVB9ZKMF
Triacetyluridine is more potent and convenient than uridine UMP; you can take this tiny pill with breakfast and bed stacks and skip all that not-so-great tasting sublingual dissolving crap.
  • Choline source: ALCAR all damn day. I found I was highly reactive to cholinergics, and ALCAR doesn't cause any adverse reactions. It's a wonderful addition to any stack. Period.
Taken morning with breakfast and again with lunch (T+4 hours) since it's energizing.
  • You could also go with Alpha-GPC, and I recommend starting at the lower end of the dosage range, in the event that you are sensitive as well. I like the 50% strength variety - Powder City Alpha GPC Capsules (60 Capsules) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IWE0KOQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lLMjybNASN6TP

Tl;dr - you need DHA, Uridine, B vitamins and Cholinergics, typically in a 12 hr apart regiment (or broken apart into breakfast, lunch and evening stacks). Quality magnesium is also recommended.
Vyvanse should also be taken on a strict schedule.

u/dravn · 1 pointr/StackAdvice

The question "what has had the most significant effect for you?" has been posed in /r/nootropics and /r/stackadvice before. The #1 answer is always exercise. Exercise will have a much more significant effect than any nootropic, and the recommendation is always to ensure that sleep, diet, and exercise are all taken care of before experimenting with nootropics.

That being said, some supplements can definitely help to address anxiety/depression. Let me also say that every body is different; and between two people who are trying to ameliorate the same condition, the same supplement could help one and worsen the other.

The essentials for anyone are: Omega-3s, magnesium glycinate, and a B-complex. Also consider ALCAR and a choline source (such as alpha-GPC).

Supplements that people report being beneficial for anxiety/depression (and therefore focus, energy, mental capacity): ashwagandha, rosea rhiodola, L-theanine bacopa, SEMAX, memantine.

There are plenty (1, 2, 3) of reports on what has worked for certain people to tackle their anxiety/depression. (Click through all of those).

My recommendation for you would be to get this magnesium, some good fish oil, and this B-complex. Then give SEMAX a shot. Then maybe look into bacopa, aswagandha, etc.

Regarding noopept: "Noopept reduces anxiety and depression for me. When I went through a bad time it would immediately take the emotion out of me." Perhaps try it too.

u/schwiftshop · 3 pointsr/StackAdvice

It depends on what your measuring - if its 'flour like', 'sugar like', flakes, etc

Most good vendors will have a serving size on the package or give you a scoop - before I got my scale that's what I went by.

That said, its totally worth it to buy a scale. I got mine for like 20 bucks on amazon (it has a 20 gram limit). The thing to keep in mind is that when you measure small amounts, it can get really hard to get good measurements unless you're buying lab-grade equipment (and even then its not great), so if you use supplements that are dosed under say, 50-100mg, and its really important that you are accurate, read up on geometric dilution.

edit: this is the exact one I bought - at the time it was only $23. American Weigh Scales GEMINI-20 Portable MilliGram Scale

I enjoy the life extension liquid melatonin since it is taken under the tongue and absorbed in about 15 min, rather than 30-45 for oral administration. Also, since it's drop by drop you can manipulate the dosage to your liking. 20 drops = 3mg so you can easily do a little division to get whatever dosage you like. Stuff lasts me forever.

Yup, trust me, 20$ now for a scale will save you money in the long run. You'll inevitably underestimate how much of something you are taking, which can be dangerous at worse, and expensive as you go through supplements quicker at best.

This scale is on sale for 10 dollars right now actually, so I'd go with it. It has tons of good reviews. http://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-0-01g-Digital-Scale/dp/B0012LOQUQ/

This one, which I have, is good though because it has a little metal cup to place the supplements in. I guess otherwise you could use a little paper cup or something, put it on the scale and tare it, then add your supplements if you go with the first scale.

lithium pretty much saves me from having these weird anxious and dreadful feelings. 5 mg lithium via lithium orotate (equivalent of 120 mg of lithium orotate salt, or one of these tablets) has pretty fantastic safety data, and really can't hurt you at all unless you already have a kidney issue (people get this much lithium a day from drinking groundwater in certain cities). I personally take 20mg a day (four of those tablets) but increased dosages comes with increased risks -- which can be mitigated if you have the money for blood lithium testing (you want less than 1.2 mEq/dl)

Thanks for all this info.

I drank the 2 cups faster than I normally do. However, in a given week I do end up drinking 1.5 cups one after the another if it is a drip coffee. And this one was a drip coffee..

I took one capsule of this . It did not have caffeine added.

Piracetam is a good place to start with -racetams and citicoline or Alpha-GPC are good sources of choline.

L-tyrosine is useful in cases of dopamine deficiency and should be taken with a B complex, or just vitamin B6, and no food for optimal absorption.

Histamine reactions to NAC are rare, but NAC should be avoided if you do have a reaction.

Yes, the 24-hour cortisol test is what you need. If it's too crazy, you can see a doctor and then show them the results. I've found trying to do it the opposite way always ends in frustration (meaning, going to the doctor as an informed patient, and in spite of being tactful and respectful, never getting taken seriously enough for relevant labs). I believe insurance has far too much influence in doctors' decisions for labs, so by self-paying and doing it myself, I bypass that roadblock and can then have preliminary evidence for them.

I never seemed to get anything out of Holy Basil. Maybe there is only so much total adaptogen effect you can get, and it's just overkill? Or maybe when I stop it, I'll find out it really was doing something. It's always a work in progress.
