In my opinion, 90% of the standing desks are pretty much identical. They're all sourcing no-name, Chinese made legs and electronics (the legs are literally all over Alibaba). Even the tops are likely sourced from a handful of the same companies.

I bought legs from Automonous.ai and handmade a top (I'm into woodworking so it was a fun project for me). The legs looks like nearly everything that every other standing desk company is offering.

If you're half-way mechanically inclined: buy the legs from wherever you can find a good price. Go down to ikea and buy one of their tops. Screw the legs to the top.

The only thing you'll need to watch is making sure you don't strip the screw from the wood. I, personally, put in some threaded inserts to reduce the chances of rip out. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/E-Z-Threaded-Hex-Flanged-Internal-Threads/dp/B002KT43MU/ref=pd_sbs_328_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B002KT43MU&pd_rd_r=STWHEH78NZ223Y0N8MPY&pd_rd_w=5TO6r&pd_rd_wg=1zLyj&psc=1&refRID=STWHEH78NZ223Y0N8MPY

I just roll my chair over the mat when I sit. It definitely erodes the mat, but I bought a $30 mat on amazon 4 years ago and while it looks a little eroded, it works just fine.

Edit: I have the “genuine joe” mat on amazon. $22 on amazon, had it for years and it works great. It’s thick enough to provide comfort but thin enough to roll the chair over.

I bought this desk used around 2 years ago for $650 from what I think was a Boeing office that was closing down and selling off equipment.

I use it with this footpad when I'm standing. When I'm sitting I use a Herman Miller Embody or a Herman Miller Mirra 2 chair.

I like it enough. I'd say I probably sit about 75% of the time. I like this desk a lot because it's so deep but it's very heavy. I use it with a 43" 4k monitor that is mounted on an Amazon Basics monitor arm so I can move it all around the desk at will.

My desk is a little wobbly but it isn't something I notice. It only happens when it's higher up than I would normally stand and I intentionally try and rock it. However, the surface does rock slightly because it is mounted to the chassis of the desk by simple bolts and rectangular plates.

My motor has had 0 issues but this is a really high end desk. I've heard anecdotally a lot of the cheaper brands have motors that burn out after a year or so of use. I imagine with minimal use and proper maintenance they would last a long time though.

What I do recommend is getting a desk that has a concave shape where your belly will meet the desk. Allowing it to form around your body like a semi-circle. It makes a bigger difference than you would think. I love mine for that reason.

I have these under my desk

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BVYW7UY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_o6CRDbQ8HP2E5

super easy to do just with 3M Velcro strips attached under the table.

Add some wire sleeves and your good to enjoy the clutter free view.

Can't comment on exactly that, but I have this desk, and the center piece of all MDF. I currently have a triple arm monitor mount clamped to the center with 3x Samsung C27HG70 displays on it, and those displays aren't exactly light (bulky, curved, 27 in, etc.). You'd be surprised how strong MDF is in these situations. It's extremely dense and under this type of load, it's perfectly capable. Where it fails is when you start screwing into it and such, as the threads won't hold up and are liable to stripping easily, due to MDF being tiny particles glued together.

Hi! We sell an all-in-one monitor mount that comes with parts for through-hole attachment and clamp-style attachment. Our clamp style is small but can be attached to desks up to 1" thick. When you purchase the monitor mount, you also get all the parts for a single and dual monitor mounts at no extra charge. So, if you currently use one monitor and in a few years, you decide to work with two monitors might help you work better, you already have all of the parts. I don't have a suggestion for a varidesk style desk but I purchased a gladiator bamboo work bench which I set to my height and I use a drafting stool when I want to sit. (I'm 5'10" and the desk is set to the maximum height and is perfect for me. Might be too short for somebody taller). The bench itself is really solid and will probably last a lifetime of abuse.

I looked at the varidesk as well for my purposes but the price is really off putting. For the desk real estate. And like your brother, I wanted the full desk width to work with for gaming purposes.

Another option is to get the varidesk and some adjustable arm monitor stand and use the varidesk for only the keyboard/mouse, but it's still not an optimal solution. The other options seem to be the adjustable style desks which get really expensive and was out of my price range (I didn't want to spend around $1000 on a desk).

Good luck in your search!

Imprint CumulousPro Commercial Grade 24"x36"

It has gone up in price >$20 since I ordered mine last Wednesday. Weird.

This is only my second day on it but I really like it. It is firm but so cushy I cannot feel the floor by bottoming out even if i jump or stamp my foot.

Is it worth the ~$100? I don't have enough data to say yet. It seems really well constructed so I would guess that it will easily amortize to being worth it over its lifetime.

  1. The monitor could use quite a bit more height; right now, I'm craning my neck down (bad), but I've no more books to pile on.

  2. The keyboard is fine.

  3. The mouse location is obviously unworkable.

I like the look of something like this, but really don't want to spend $150. However, I'm okay with spending $50, maybe $80 if it's really worth it.

    Thanks in advance!

This one looks good, i might get one myself:

Sorry for the late reply. I don't get on here very much.

I used a generic pack of bed risers that I got on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Greenco-Strong-Furniture-Design-Storage/dp/B01CG8QW3W/ref=zg_bs_3732271_2/164-4782299-6161933).

I placed the entire desk, with casters on the bed risers. Removing the casters would have resulted in a 1-2" reduction in height. The casters can lock and orientating the wheels at 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees results in no horizontal movement when working.

The setup I am using seems to work and lowering the desk to its lowest position still allows me to sit in my computer chair and work.

I would highly recommend a standing desk. My posture has improved and I have noticed an improvement in my lower back tone. The desk is also neat because you can force yourself to do leg exercises, i.e. squats and calf raises, and it slowly becomes second nature. My gf walked by my office yesterday and asked me what the hell I was doing and I was unknowingly doing squats.

Good luck!!

I use a mix of Velcro ties and cable clips, but these cable organizers do all the heavy lifting.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XZPYP7Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_M-4RCbZAFKDD0

I also use this mountable power strip so there is only one cable leading down to the outlet.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EUB7C8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hb5RCbF3NQPAJ

Finally, I have 2 grommets in my desktop, so I have 2 of these to provide easy access for powering accessories.

I was considering something like this. The small shelf wouldn't work for a keyboard as it would be too close. A laptop cart would probably work well.
