It doesn't make you sound dumb, I'd rather see something unique and cool instead of the same mods that are done over and over again.

If you're looking into RallyX have you thought about swapping over to Forester suspension to raise it up a bit?

I'd go the Cobb AccessPort route instead of tactrix because of the simplicity and now that the V3 has come out, the V2 is around $100 cheaper I think. But if you're comfortable doing it that way do it.

I'm not sure if it's just the picture but the headlights look a bit foggy. I used this on my first car a few years ago and it worked great. Most of the other headlight restoration kits are bullshit. You could also bake them open and paint the plastic pieces black to spice things up.

If yellow foglights are your thing I used this on my Subaru and I love it. Just takes around 5 light coats on the outside of the fog lights and you're good to go. Much better than any of the tint overlays or light bulbs.

Here's some information on it. Daniel Stern is pretty well known as the lighting expert.

Another thing you could consider if you want to mix things up is plastidipping your car. DipYourCar has some wild colors, Sunset Orange and Tiffany Blue are my personal favorites. I'd stay away from the normal black though, it normally makes cars look pretty trashy.

Hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm telling you what to do with the car, just giving suggestions. Good luck!

honestly, i wouldn't get either of those. yeah they're both good, but you really don't need all of that.

what i use:

griot's garage clay

meguairs soap

mothers cleaner wax

nu finish

and of course a (or a couple) 5 gallon buckets with a grit guard , which is completely not necessary, but highly recommended by professional detailers. i don't use one, and my car comes out fine. and a good, soft wash mitt. either a good sponge or a wheel brush for your wheels would be needed as well.

my once a year routine is as follows:

wash, claybar, nu polish, cleaner wax

usually wash every 2 weeks or so, and rewax every 6 weeks or so. if i did a bunch of off roading and the paint is gritty i'll clay as needed, but usually it's once a year.

also head over to /r/autodetailing for a lot of tips. beware though that they use a lot of very high end products, and circle jerk over polishing and getting perfect reflections. if all you're looking to do is keeping your paint in good condition, then what i do is just fine. if you're interested in keeping your paint better than factory, follow them.

Get NGK spark plugs. They are what the engine is designed for, and they're pre-gapped.

The pros use a tool like this to reach into the wells without worrying about a chain of extensions coming apart. Whether its worth the cost is up to you.

I always use anti-seize. I don't think its as important as it used to be, but its cheap and it gives me peace of mind. Also be sure to put dielectric great on the wires.

If you do it, be prepared to take a lot of stuff out, especially the battery and air intake. Its not an easy job, but it can save you a good amount of money.

u/GonadsOfWrath · 3 pointsr/subaru

There's nothing bad about your halogens; they're actually quite good, technically. They just need fresh, high-performance bulbs. Your stock bulbs are long-life H7 bulbs. This is how much improvement you can expect from new halogen bulbs alone. Can we say yes to 60+ feet?

And that was a test of previous-generation, high-performance H7 bulbs. The Philips XtremeVision, the king of the aforementioned test, has been dethroned by the even more savage Philips RacingVision. You can safely expect 70+ feet of additional sight distance with the RacingVisions. And they're super white to boot.

----

And if you want to go retarded with the output, remember that your typical H7 puts out 1450 lumens. There are special bulbs coming out in the next few days which are basically H9 bulbs with a H7 base. H9 bulbs put out 2100+ lumens. The H7 base allow them to fit into your Subie. That's a 45% increase in lumen count. That's only if you want to go full-retarded with the amount of light coming from your Subaru. Me, personally, I'd stick with the easily found Philips RacingVision H7 from Amazon. The special H7/H9 hybrid bulbs are more expensive and not on Amazon.

If you also upgrade your high-beams (9005) to HIR1 bulbs (9011), you'll put putting out 2500 lumens per bulb, per side, instead of a mere 1870. The total lumen count of your Subaru will be 2500+2500+2100+2100 = over 9000 (9200). Again, only if you want to go full-retarded with light.

I just pulled the cluster apart and checked what bulbs I needed. These are the bulbs that I ordred. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K7WW2HU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also picked up a 20 pack of the white ones to do the glovebox light, and I'm hoping that the AUTO switch for the windows and hazards lights use the same bulbs but I'm not 100% on them.

To swap the bulbs you need two tools. A Phillips screw driver, and a small small Flathead(eyeglass style) or a pick.

  1. Take the two screws that you can see out at the top of your cluster trim pop that off. There are two plastic clips at the bottom that you can just pop out by pulling on the top of the trim they are pretty sturdy.

  2. Remove the two bottom screws from the cluster, and the one top screw. Remove the cluster by pulling the bottom out. Unplugging the three plugs on the top and sliding it the rest of the way out.

  3. You will see 10 little twist off caps of various colors(Green, Black, and Brown) I don't know what the colors mean but they all accept the same style T5 bulb. To make the LED's the I purchased fit right you have to bring the contacts inside of the little caps in just a bit to give a little bit more tension. Since the led's don't have a plastic end to keep them snug in the stock sockets. You can get other LED's that have the plastic but they are much more expensive and typically only have 1 LED facing forward. This will cause hot spots in the lighting.
  4. Replace all of the bulbs. You can replace your turn signals with another color if you want such as Red or Blue. But I just used green for everything. I tried white for the ODO and it looked pretty snazzy.
  5. Guide the cluster back in and plug in all three plugs. Turn your ignition to On and click on the parking lights to make sure that all of the LED's are in the correct polarity. If they aren't you can easily unscrew the cap turn it 180 and screw back in. You shouldn't need to remove the LED just turn the cap around.

  6. Screw everything back in and enjoy your new LED backlit gauges!!

    For the HVAC lights

  7. Remove your cup holder. Just remove the two screws and slide it out.
  8. Remove your hvac/radio trim. Should just pop off
  9. Remove your radio. Remove all 6 screws and it should slide right out. Unplug it and sit it off to the side.
  10. There are only 2 bulbs in the HVAC. One on either side of the fan speed knob. You should be able to reach in and take them out. Do the same thing that you did with the cluster sockets and bring the contacts closer together to allow the LED's to fit snug into them. Screw everything back together and you are done!

Took me 15-20 minutes to do it from start to end. But I had taken out prior to check what style bulbs I needed.

Here you go. :)

The inlet is bigger than my car has, but the exhaust shop is taking care of it for me. It was buy one that fit perfect for $100 and getting it installed for $45 or or getting this one (that looks and is more what I'm looking for) for $40 and installing for $45 as well. Seemed like the better option. :)

u/NothinToSeeHere · 2 pointsr/subaru

Touchless car washes don't do shit to clean your car. I spent about $8 on that useless machine, and there was still a layer of dirt on my front/rear bumper, side skirts, and grill. Best thing to do if you're on a budget is buy one of these [microfiber wash mitt] (http://www.amazon.com/Chemical-Guys-Chenille-Microfiber-Scratch-Free/dp/B003TTL0TE/ref=lp_3020674011_1_2?srs=3020674011&ie=UTF8&qid=1454030316&sr=8-2) and the next time you head over to one of those self service car washes just pre-soak the car and the mit and scrub one panel at a time and rinse off the mitt with the pressure hose.

Edit : If you're not on a budget i would recommend doing the 2 bucket car wash method once a week or so. After about 4-6 months i would clay bar the vehicle and use ONR as a lubricant. There are many sealants out there, but only a few can last nearly 6 months. Chemical guys has some great sealants and waxes, but they have so many that it confuses the shit out of people. Save yourself the hassle and get some Jet Seal, some microfiber applicators and some microfiber towels and you're set.

Edit 2: Here is a list of tested waxes and sealants i found on the interwebs a few weeks back http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=85205

These have been shown to have lasted more than 4 months

"Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection
Chemical Guys: M-Seal, Jetseal 109, Speed Amor
Klasse AIO and Sealant Glaze
Hi Temp Paste
Zaino AIO, Z2 and Z5
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant."

u/commiecat · 1 pointr/subaru

Awesome, good luck with it and feel free to PM me if you have any questions. If you buy from Crutchfield then I believe they'll send you a PDF with instructions on removing door panels, head unit, etc. I have one for the OB which should be the same as your Legacy and would be happy to email it or Dropbox it to you if you're not going with Crutchfield.

Definitely have some trim removal tools before you get started. You can get them for a few dollars on Amazon or Harbor Freight. Makes removing panels easier without scratching or creasing them like you might with a screwdriver.

Menzerna Micro Polish SF 4500 - An extremely gentle polish used to prep paint prior to sealing/wax. Works extremely well with Subaru's soft paint.

Chemical Guys JetSeal 109 - No experience with this yet, but good reviews. I'm looking into a few other options for my first paint sealant (just prior to winter). Adds an additional layer of protection between the wax and clear coat.

Colinite 845 - Best wax I've found. Durable, easy to apply and even smells good. Wax is the first line of defense between the elements and your paint. I wax my current vehicle once a month on average. It depends on the weather if I have to do it more/less often. Rule of thumb for me is to re-apply when it stops beading.

u/spinny37 · 1 pointr/subaru

I use the Meguiar's Complete Car care kit which comes with a "quick detailer" similar to the above. I can't attest for the lucas slick mist stuff, but the quick detailer does look good.

For a full detail, I'll wash the car, then use the quick detailer and clay bar to get rid of any excess dirt, etc. Then use the actual wax from the kit and finish up with the headlight restoration stuff if needed. Makes the WRX look great. :) Hope that helps!

u/chriskmee · 2 pointsr/subaru

The first thing I would try is this:

Meguiar's Ultimate Compound

Meguiar's X3070 Soft Foam 4" Applicator Pads

Meguiar's X2020 Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels

All 3 of those together is under $20 (need to spend $25 since one is an add on item). This stuff is amazing for scratches and paint in general. While it won't make your car showroom ready, it will make it look much better and is totally worth the $20.

Essentially what you do is first make sure the area is clean, then apply the compound to the pad and rub the compound on your car using circular motions. After you do that for a minute or two, use the towel to remove the compound form the car.

u/ThaGerm1158 · 2 pointsr/subaru

You're getting ripped off at $2000, so $3,000 is astronomical.

My local subaru shop "not a dealer" does HG replacements starting at $900. There are often a few extra parts needed, so it can go up to $1,300, but that isn't often. They do great work and specialize in Subaru... I'm sure there is a similar shop in your area

With a new HG and some Subaru Coolant System Conditioner it should run 200,000 MORE miles.

Honestly, if you picked up a Subie with 78K for less than $3k, boy did you score... It's totally worth the REASONABLE HG replacement.

u/hondaddict · 1 pointr/subaru

yep i use a rotary buffer to buff, then [NuFinish] (http://www.amazon.com/Nu-Finish-Liquid-Car-Polish/dp/B000BPSW7C/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1408709206&sr=1-1&keywords=nu+finish) to polish. I'm sure any good polish will work, but that's what i use. and i messed up my comment above. You buff, THEN polish.

Also, if you don't have a spray gun, you can use a 2k bomb clear can not be found in stores. it's does better than a normal spray can of clear coat. a normal spray can probably wouldn't look too bad, but the 2k stuff will do better. the 2k can has a hardener that makes the lens much more UV resistant to fading. Since you seem like you are going to try this: let the clear coats sit and dry a day, then run that over with a 2k sandpaper before you buff then polish it.

u/amberrgerr · 1 pointr/subaru

There is a product (I use meguiar's brand) called compound that you can use to minimize the appearance of swirls if applied by hand, and if done with a dual action polisher will remove them completely. It is also great for removing shallow scratches in clear coat and general clear coat issues (aside from flaking and scratches that are deep). Check out /r/AutoDetailing for more info :)

u/sparkie172 · 2 pointsr/subaru

You can go to autozone or wherever they check for you then look up online as code is generic. Each brand has their own specific meaning for the code. Before my cobb I used a Bluetooth obd2 reader 20$ online then used torque app from Android store free version to check and clear codes. It also does some pretty cool stuff for the paid version. The obd2 reader is small which I liked. I had 1 like this. https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-34t5-Bluetooth-Android/dp/B005NLQAHS

u/Rallywhale · 2 pointsr/subaru

Oh man, I know exactly how you feel! My 2.5i OB started misfiring like crazy last spring and it was a pain trying to diagnose it - I used injector cleaner, valve cleaner, cleaned my MAF and intake, swapped my MAF, and a ton of other things...finally decided to go for the plugs and wires, and after taking out the old ones found that my cylinder #4 wire and plug were dead - put in new plugs and wires all around, and it was like having a new car! I never would have suspected it to be the plugs because the car started and idled absolutely fine, but now I know!

Also, this is a lifesaver when swapping out spark plugs:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0014ZVSVK/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?refRID=1406E10SHZEDKB3XHWDP&ref_=pd_sim_auto_3

Love your OB by the way. Cheers!

if you have a power drill, get the 3m restoration kit. it looks like this.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-39008-Headlight-Restoration-System/dp/B001AIZ5HY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396424163&sr=8-1&keywords=3m+restoration+headlight+kit

i mean you dont have to have a drill, but it would make it easier.

this is what mine looks like before and after. haha

Not low on coolant So that sounds promising. I already have a new thermostat and will replace tomorrow. I just didnt want to drain the whole system again. Is the Subaru Coolant Conditioner something I should add as well?

Will check on the heater core hoses and update.

Thanks so much for your help!

Timing belt is a must because if it breaks, your engine is fucked. Its also the type of thing that I recommend leaving to a professional, though not necessarily a dealership. My Subaru dealership wanted $850 for a timing belt replacement. I went to a local mechanic who was well-regarded and I got it done for half that. Make sures its a Gates belt.

You could probably do all the other stuff yourself with a little help from forums and YouTube videos. I'd definitely replace the coolant because clean coolant is one of the best ways to avoid head gasket problems. Spark plugs are super easy if you take your time (and this thing makes the job even easier). I'd go ahead and replace plug wires too.

Transmission fluid is pretty easy, but don't forget to get an extra quart for the rear differential.

As far as brakes and rotors, you don't really know until you look at them and see.

u/ISheader · 2 pointsr/subaru

I'm glad you like it, thanks :)

I'll do my best to answer as I'm at work now and will provide links later.

I got the light bar as well as the mounting brackets off of Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NXL4F4A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0175W0NCA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

I'm not entirely sure what exactly the multi-link is meant for as I didn't end up installing the lift. I was pressed for time so I had my local Subaru mechanic install it. He said it went on without any problems.

Yepp, stock rims plasti-dipped black! Currently, I have Blizzaks ws80s because I went on a cross-country winter road trip earlier in the year, but I will be replacing them very soon. Most likely a more Hwy friendly tire with a little bit of aggressiveness for the mud.

I really dig your color and keep us posted when you start getting down and dirty with your beast ;)

u/teejaydub · 1 pointr/subaru

Bummer. To answer your question, I use this one, and it works great. Also has GPS/Google Maps integration. Looks like it's super cheap now. I paid $170 for it a year ago, and even at that price, I think it's worth it.

u/deathbomb843 · 7 pointsr/subaru

I use Meguiar's products on my wrx and it keeps it looking brand new.

Honestly, buy the Meguiars's Complete Car Care kit, its like $40 on amazon and has every cleaning product imaginable, and I've used all the sprays and gels countless times.

I've got this one for my 6 Plus, it works well with the phone in Portrait. I really enjoy it.

http://www.amazon.com/WizGear-Universal-Magnetic-Swift-SnapTM-Technology/dp/B00PGJWYJ0/ref=sr_1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1453242228&sr=1-4&keywords=Magnetic+phone+mount

I've got a Otterbox Commuter style case on my phone, so I stuck one of the round metal discs on the back of the case. (Also comes with rectangle ones) If I placed it more towards the middle, I'm sure I could easily place my phone in landscape.

u/RichardCabezo · 2 pointsr/subaru

Nice! As preventative maintenance Subaru sells this stuff. It is rebranded Holt's Radweld. Small bottle. I threw some in my daughter's Subie just in case. Can't hurt I guess. If the headgaskets on the replacement motor were original units then it is probably just a matter of time before they go too. But, you never know. This magic Subie juice is supposed to help.

If you don't have record of the last time the coolant was changed, change it. To play it safe I'd use Subaru Super Coolant (blue) with Subaru Cooling System Conditioner (Holts Radweld).

In the event you need to do the head gasket, Speed Academy has an amazing video I used to do mine.

  • Subarus tend to be easy to fix when they break. I have an '09 2.5i SE 5MT and I didn't even have to remove the hood to remove my engine.
  • Make sure whatever brand you use the new gaskets are MLS (multi-layer steel). As they are regarded in the community I used Six-Star Bernie.
  • If I had to do it again I would have used ARP studs to fasten my heads to the block.
  • Machine shop labor is cheap. Take your heads to one to have them professionally-decked.
  • When torquing the head studs into the block, find the Subaru directions (i.e., Mitchell1) and *follow them to the letter*. You're going to be turning them, backing them off, turning them again and whatnot. Just go with it.
  • "As long as ya got it outta there" you can change these things as well:
    • Timing belt & pulleys, thermostat, water pump (Aisin / "eye-shin" sells a reasonably-priced kit)
    • Coolant hoses
    • Spark plugs
    • Engine oil and filter
    • Oil pump
    • STi engine mounts (left, right)
    • *RECOMMENDED* oil pickup (the OEM one tends to crack, starving your engine of oil)
    • *RECOMMENDED* timing belt guide (as the stamped OEM one failed when my engine blew, I replaced it with a Tomei milled one)

Call me crazy, but when I blew my engine I elected to keep the car. Subaru has engineered a family sedan way better than it has to be for the market and it shows.

I need to do some digging to find the invoices of parts I purchased; I'll update this reply as I find them.

Found this on Amazon in another thread: https://www.amazon.com/Subaru-Fixed-Crossbar-Impreza-E361SFJ000/dp/B008216AVM

I'm in the same boat as you, 2012 Impreza hatch. Last season I just threw skis/snowboards in the back, but I'm looking into making things a bit more comfortable for my passengers this season. Looked on the Thule website, and the crossbars alone are $500+ so this looks pretty good.

Or have the dealership do a TPMS reset. Pretty much a PITA for something as simple as swapping wheels. I probably would have pulled the trigger already if it wasn't for the TPMS hurdles.

you need the fixed crossbar set from subaru. it's made by thule and exact same parts as the set bought from thule but like 1/3rd the price at about $175-ish

I use a magnetic phone mount that sits in a vent. It's quite sturdy. It comes with 3 magnets, 2 with a sticky side and 1 without. Just slip one of the magnets between your phone case and it's ready to go.

Did you change out your coolant with Subaru coolant and put in the Subaru coolant conditioner after your head gasket job? The conditioner is very important.

Since I haven't seen anybody address your data logging question, I highly suggest the Torque app available on android paired with a $25 OBDII reader from amazon. Plus then you don't have to pay $50-$250 on a scanner tool. I've got mine setup to start logging as soon as it connects to my car every time i start it up.

obd ii bluetooth from amazon- $23. Maybe worth a try to reset on your own and you can read/reset fault codes using Torque Pro app, don't know if it voids warranty. worth reading into.

I have this thing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works well with my car and torque, but my car is older than your car.

I have one for my Outback, and I'm never looking back to using a normal screw. Different models also have different styles (long tip, etc), so you're bound to find something that will still have adequate clearance even for off-roading. I personally use the F-108N, which has a long tip, and it still tucks away inside the factory skid plate.

As for not being able to drain completely...I'd say it depends. My OB has the drain hole facing the rear-ish of the car, and I have my car on ramps during oil changes, so gravity kinda does the work of clearing out that last little bit for me.

I suppose that a Fumoto oil valve would have to be next!

I have one of those bluetooth ones and use Torque Pro on my Android phones. I have had no issues.
