1. Download and install the latest working Nvidia drivers (390.77) as that unlocks the Nvidia control panel so you can manually select which apps use GPU vs dGPU. I’ve caught a few games trying to not use the dGPU and this fixed it.
   
   
   
2. Adaptive brightness: there are two things that cause your screen to dim on its own. One is via the camera and the ambient lighting in the room. This you can disable in settings. The other is based on the brightness of the onscreen content. This is an Intel GPU Setting. You can either install the Intel drivers and disable it via the Intel control panel, or you can search here for the quick registry edit to resolve it.
   
   
   
3. Your power cable can plug into the bottom of the tablet when it’s undocked to charge just be tablet portion.

I will be testing this out. I raid regularly in WoW, and this past weekend, the SB2 worked great. Averaged between 40-60 FPS in raid at its native resolution with the graphics settings at 7 for normal world, and 5 for Raid. No, it isnt as good as my dedicated gaming and editing machine, but more than passable for me. I knew it wasn't going to get as good of performance as the other machine, but I bought it for travel to game and edit videos.

It is closer to the other machine for editing, only being slightly slower for scrubbing and rendering of 4K. My main machine is near to real time (5 min video takes just over 5 mins to render on the main machine.) I will give it a godo test tonight, but the initial testing had it rendering out the same 5 min video in a little under 7 minutes. Completely acceptable for a travel box.

Photoshop and Lightroom perform fantastically. While I havent done official tests or anything, they perform as well as my main machine. And being able to set them up to always use the GPU, they scream. and I love using it in tilt mode (with the screen flipped and folded over the KB.

I opted for the 15" i7, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I have a 256 GB MicroSD I use for storage and got an adapter that is meant for the SB2 15". I will link it. This saved me a good amount of money. There is a huge jump between that 256GB and 512GB SSD. With everything I need, and using the MicroSD as a scratch disk, I still have over 100GB free space. Windows, WoW full, Premier Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom and various other apps related to CCE.

The SB2 you mention (even the 256GB SSD) can easily be a full desktop replacement so long as expectations are within the real world and the device is used as designed. I see mine being used more than my main computer.

Following on from yesterday's post with a surface dock from /u/SurfaceDockGuy I humbly submit potato quality shots of my two setups.

A little background; I purchased my surface last year right after the refresh to replace my aging Dell tablet but couldn't commit easily to the transition because the Dell docking solution included a drop in stand that worked much better for my needs and didn't leave me hunched over the tablet screen.

Enter /u/SurfaceDockGuy and the VESA Surface Dock and I was instantly able to build a flexabile home and office solution that allowed me to work with the same hardware whether i'm at home, in the field, or sitting in my office, it truly is the first party accessory that Microsoft is missing from the Surface lineup.

My home setup is a single Dell P2416d panel sitting on an Amazon Dual VESA mount with the dock solution. For a desk i'm using a height and tilt adjustable overbed table on wheels, this allows me to move around my house easier and adjust for sitting or standing positions (ensure you tighten the monitor arms to prevent overtilt).

We always encourage customers to try getting the most out of their machines before buying new stuff. However there comes a point when attempting to restore old equipment can lead to major frustration. The following steps can help and certainly worth a shot:

• To improve performance, you can try downloading the latest Intel GPU driver from intel.com rather than using the Microsoft provided one. IIRC, the intel.com HD 4400 driver had about 9 months of extra development on it. You may need to manually uninstall your current driver via device manager in order to install the Intel one since it will complain that it is not designed for your computer. There is a risk of unintended side-effects, but it is 100% reversible.
  
• Does the CPU fan spin often? If so, it could be clogged with dust reducing its effectiveness. You can try getting a can of compressed air and blowing it into the slats - don't worry, you're not going to ruin the fan by over-spinning it or moving dust around the machine with this technique. It is unlikely to have a major effect but worth a shot.

If you want to play games, or do more intensive stuff, I highly recommend getting a usb fan and angling it towards the back of it.

I use my surface every day as my main work device and with this little fan pointed at the back of it, I never ever hear the internal fan spin up to an audible level. This little fan is near silent as well. So that should help with throttling issues while gaming.

I also recommend using IE. The touch version is seriously the best thing since sliced bread when I am just casually browsing. I use regular IE for work. I just decided to never install chrome since getting the surface and haven't looked back yet.

I would also recommend getting familiar with onenote. It is a great program and if you make the initial commitment to use it for a bunch of stuff and create an organization scheme that works from the start, you will thank yourself later when you are trying to remember your thoughts on Harvard's 19th century curriculum choices two years down the line.

Bought it to protect the magnesium back from scratches and it's great. Adds a little more bulk, keep that in mind, but so will any case.

What's great about this is that it actually uses the variable kickstand while most of the other cases obstruct it.

Closes magnetically (it won't sleep the device like the Type Cover will, fyi) and feels really secure.

Only cons I have involve the extra heft using it with the Type Cover attached, but without the keyboard it's the best.

I have the pro 4 8gb i7 and I play a lot of games on mine. Lego games play the best, especially both of the Harry Potter Lego games. On those, I get very high frame rates at max settings, max resolution. I also have played Tomb Raider 2013 at 1080p on ultra settings (ultra for detail and textures but the rest on high) and got low to mid 20s fps. However I also use a USB fan that I got off Amazon and that gives me double frame rates so I can play that game even in the mid 40s fps with those settings. The fan also allows me to get in the low 20s at 720p for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Assassins Creed games I also play. I don't play #2 or #3 at max resolution because there is black boxing, but I do play those at 1080p and they are playable. Black Flag I play as well but at 720p. Mind you on these games I am not getting super high frame rates, but at least in the 20s-30s which is fine for me and basically similar to what you would get on a gaming console.

When you get your device, make sure to get this fan from Amazon to help with your gaming. You will get about twice the performance. It's also helpful just in general to keep the device extra cool and have sustained performance for longer periods of time.

I use a Surface Pro original for programming with Visual Studio 2013 Pro and it's great. It can drive up to 3 external displays with the correct setup. The 128 GB version is fine, I have Office 2013 and VS2013 installed plus a heap of developer utils (git, tortoisegit, beyond compare, etc...).

You can easily get one external monitor with the built-in displaylink and this mini-displaylink to HDMI/DVI/VGA adapter. I also recommend this little USB 3.0 hub + ethernet adapter. Both of those products together with the Surface Pro make for a nice portable workstation (sans external display).

To run 2 external displays, you need to get this Plugable UD-3900 which adds 4 USB 3.0 ports, ethernet, HDMI and DVI. I have one - it works great for office stuff (haven't tried any video games with it except SNES emulators which work great too.)

Yeah, everyone expects Microsoft to announce an update to the Surface Book in the fall, possibly November timeframe. Though of course, this is all just speculation.

Between the two existing models, I would say that for gaming you would definitely want the 2016 edition with the Performance Base. I have the 2015 Core i7 / dGPU OG Surface Book, and the graphics are just too limiting for a good gaming experience. On the newer model, you can likely run most current AAA PC games at 900p/1080p with decent settings and framerate (there is a sub for dedicated Surface gamers called r/sufacegaming I believe... check there).

For your use case, the only real benefit of the 16Gb model, in my view, would be if you expect to run more than 1-2 virtual machines as part of your programming / CS workload. 8GB is still a lot of memory. You can expand the storage of any Surface Book by getting one of these: BASEQI Micro SD Adapter for Surface Book and an appropriate micro SD card.

Hi bud. The higher the mAh of the battery, the longer it will last so 11000mAh is ok, but if you're traveling long distances, you probably want something more than 20000mAh. I have it and love it. Pen stays secure, can use the Surface's kickstand, type cover sits flush when closed, and even has a little rubber strap thing on the back that you can put your hand through so that you keep a good grip on it while keeping another hand free.

In my opinion your best bet for dual monitor support is just to get a dual display dock that works over USB 3.0 - many people are having issues with the Microsoft one so perhaps get something like this:

So I'm travelling the world and working along the way. I'm just using my surface pro 4 and it's external battery (RAVPower 23000 mAH) for the last 10 months now and I just walked into my room to a bloated battery. I didn't bring the original charger as it took up more space. Now I'm afraid that I'll be running out of a way to recharge soon, it doesn't look like MS officially sells Surfaces in Colombia and being on the road a lot I rather have a new battery pack than just a charger, although admittedly I now see the use in having one as a backup.

I found the Qi-Infinity battery-https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0183UJ2SY) which charger can be used directly on the Surface Pro too. So that looks like a perfect option, not sure yet if they deliver here (in time) but I'll hopefully hear back from them about that soon. If they don't deliver or if there is a good alternative I can find in the area I'd love to hear about it.

It works great for me. The biggest advantages over the SP4 are the battery life, screen size, and form factor. The 128gb can feel limiting sometimes, but I got this for external memory (since I never use SD cards). It fits fine on small college desks. The battery is about 10 hours with 50-75% brightness and light use, plenty for a full day of classes.

I should mention that MS advertises a 1 year battery life for the pen. This might be true (I haven't had it for a year), but the included battery only had enough charge for a month. It uses an AAAA battery too, which isn't generally sold in stores. So I recommend ordering a few AAAA batteries (I think I got a 4-pack for $5-10) just in case.

Logitech has some really nice ones on amazon. They range from $20 to $80. I've heard that the best one is the K810 that has back lighting. However, even their $20 ones I've heard type extremely well. I plan on reading more reviews. While the K810 is nice, for me, I'd rather get a nice mechanical gaming keyboard for that price.

Whichever monitor you end up buying, do get an active miniDP to HDMI adapter if you wish to make full use of 4K@60Hz from your Surface.

There's others, and if you read reviews you'll find people who've used it on their Alcantara Surfaces with success. The only reservation I would have is with later versions of Alcantara (ie. Yep! I used to have an AMD video card that required an active mini-DP adapter. I figure my screens weren't working because they were passive, so I tried this Plugable Active adapter. It received picture, but there was a funky flashing/choppy looking bit at the top of the screen. I will have to take a picture of it. Aside from the choppy bit, it worked fine, if I remember correctly.

What other mini-displayport to DP or HDMI (must be 4K compatible) are out there? I am pretty sure the HDMI cable I was using was 1.4 compliant.

I use this fan for my Surface Pro (2017). Plug it in, flex it so air blows into the small vent just above the USB port. Helps reduce throttling but takes up the USB port.

These should give you around 65 - 80% more battery base on my test on a SP3. more for SP4 since SP4, my test show around 70 - 80%, but very inconclusive as I haven't used it a lot.

This should give you about 20k mAhm which is about 3 times the battery capacity for the Surface Pro 4 build-in battery. After battery conversion lost, you should get around 80 - 100% more battery.


High budget option 1 ( I tested this myself with a SP3)

Get one of these which is a full AC outlet. However, even if it is 27000 mah, the problem with it is that it has to do significant convertion (3.7v -> 110v -> 14v ) so you are losing a lot of battery power. I found that it is only getting me about half a Laptop charge from this.

High budget option 2

Love it, Love it, Love it. Had problems with it after 4 months and emailed them for help. They sent me a brand new unit at no cost to me. Top notch customer service. Ended up being a Surface driver issue an not the hub. Go figure.

If you want something really rugged and don't mind losing the native kickstand, get one of the cases others have recommended like the UAG. If you'd like to keep the native kickstand, this is the only case I've found that does it right. I use the keyboard cover too (which will also protect the screen if you don't already have that), so I sliced off the cover part of that case, leaving just the back, and it works wonderfully.

The Ars Technica review provides a more detailed overview, and I agree with their findings: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/11/surface-book-with-performance-base-a-lot-more-graphics-in-a-little-more-weight/ . The 965m is a massive step up from the original ~940m.

In short: The tablet portion is identical, battery life improved, no throttling, improved cooling to accommodate the 965m, fan noise slightly louder (but nothing unusual for ultrabooks).

One observation that I had is that the slightly heavier (and thicker) base also improves on the balance of the whole system. It doesn't feel like it wants to topple backwards as often when its in my lap.


Also: If you had a flush mount microSD adapter, I can confirm that it fits in the new base.

I use these: A little heavy, but it provides roughly 2 full additional charges on my SP4. I typically use the 12V to increase the longevity of my battery, but it works just fine with the 16V setting for me and the charge rate is through the roof - I can literally watch my battery percentage increase about 1% per minute. :)

[note: I'm not sure that the 16V settings will work on your SP3. YMMV and hopefully it doesn't blow up.]

Thanks for your response! I decided to go with the Fujitsu pen as Amazon offered a faster delivery date and I saw a lot of people praising it. The only thing I noticed was that some of the pens I was looking at to purchase didn't say 'Lifebook' on the pen, like the one linked below, so that worried be at first that it might not be the same pen, but I saw it linked by other Surface Pro 2 users as well. Hey, I know this is an old post but I wanted to let you know that if you're still looking for a product like this, you can now buy it on Amazon. It's called SnapStands and its an attachable kickstand that supports your screen in various angles when flipped around or when even fully detached. I left mine at airport security check and the airport had to mail it to my house. The person put tape on alacantra keyboard backside, and wrote my name on the tape in pen. The pen marked past the tape and resulted in an inch long pen stain on the alacantra keyboard that I use on my surface pro 3. I successfully removed the blue ink line with the product link below. Just follow instructions. I highly recommend using the brush that is recommended under the "frequently bought together".
I will add that I used a high power stand fan to dry the alacantra area after I have finished cleaning it with the brush.

I'm pretty happy with my setup. For the sake of balancing out the desk I'd really like the third monitor. Also down the line would be a triple monitor mount so that everything comes out of one stand rather than three.

The biggest thing that I like about this setup is that I was able to get my USB dock, the dell monitor, mouse and keyboard for about the same price as the surface dock ($250 CAD).

I remember reading somewhere that the outside temperature affects the SP3 negatively, I'll try and find it tomorrow if I get a chance.

The surface starts the fan/throttles at around 70°C. Was this in chrome? Does the temperature rise the same in IE/FF?

You could also consider buying a small USB fan and point it at the top right corner of the device, it'll help it stay cool. Something like this

PS...The WORST part is I watched this video by the Microsoft team that developed the dock and they SPECIFICALLY state to use a DP to mini DP cable for best performance so that's what I bought and what I used.

There are a number of other things you can do... but... Just get one of these for when you're sick and tired of doing all of those things over and over again and you just want to be free to use WiFi in peace. When you reach that point, just plug it in and you will be instantly freed. Trust me sooner or later you'll want to be free.

Sounds like you've thought through every aspect! Now, I'm guessing you're not considering the Core m3 model? Because I believe that with all the accessories is still cheaper than the SB and it is a TERRIFIC device! The processor speed on an m3 is equivalent of i5's just a couple years ago, it's stout.

With what you've described, I'd go for the Entry Level 128GB SB and buy a 64/128GB mSD Card here which will sit flush with the body of the device!

I can totally get by with 128GB though, I was completely fine with the 64GB in my base-level SP3!

As far as SB accessories, you shouldn't need a battery pack. I get between 8-10 hours depending on usage and I can't imagine you have anywhere near 8 hours of classes in one day?

That was it! I am able to use resolutions higher than 1920x1080 with an active mini display port to HDMI adapter, hope this helps. For reference, this is the adapter I purchased though I am sure any active adapter should be fine.

I had a Goal Zero Sherpa 50 (the battery pack with the inverter attachment) given to me for my birthday last year. The inverter causes some power loss versus a straight power adapter from the laptop port, so I picked up a cheap import cord and paired it with a little adapter to fit the output on the Sherpa. It's great for backup power but I haven't had to put it through any serious tests yet.

I've also heard great things about the Anker battery pack, and there were reviews on the Amazon listing page for the larger ones from other Surface users who had paired their batteries with the adapter cable I picked up.

I use this fan, its cheap and works perfectly keeping me at 20-22 watts after 3 hours of overwatch playing. I bought the gooseneck model and I point it at the back right corner allowing some air to pass through the vents, some air to go across the screen, and some air to go along the back. It works perfectly and is COMPLETELY silent. Only 8 dollars too. I haven't done any undervolting ever, just this one fan.

So I found your review on Amazon. So this pen works with the SP2, right? So far I only have the Bamboo Feel Pen and the Fujitsu Pen. I prefer the Wacom pen for precision and accuracy, but it lacks a second button and an eraser. Have you had a Wacom Bamboo Feel pen before? If so how does it feel compared to the Wacom UP-911E-02A?

Out of curiosity, did the upgrade to Creator's update cause flickers to your external monitors?

Since the update, my 4K monitor will occasionally flicker. This flicker will occur every few minutes when the CPU is under some load. The dock seems to exacerbate this 1 frame drop to maybe a full second, so I am bypassing the dock for now.

I am using this adapter which worked great before the update: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PJ3LSIG. I ordered a second one to see if maybe mine had worn out or become defective, but the second one behaves the same.

As a Surface + Dock + Microsoft insider, I thought perhaps you might have an idea for me. Either way, thanks for sharing the video.

...almost a perfect solution except for the fact that I won't be able to reach the files while only using the tablet. It won't be a problem very often though, and I should be able to adjust my work flows accordingly.

I would look at the plugable docking stations. I've used that before and it works great. Pretty much just need to load the respective drivers on each computer and that's pretty much it. Obviously you'll need an adapter for the MacBook. The only thing I didn't like was that the blue light was bright as hell. And it doesn't charge your devices like with device specific docks. But I didn't have any problems switching back and forth between Mac and Windows.

I too bought this case. The multiple angles are great, and makes it much easier to use on your lap.

But I have to say that I'm concerned about running cpu intensive programs in this case because it makes cooling less efficient.

This Microsoft Keyboard has excellent reviews. Though so do a number of different keyboards, it really depends on what functionality you're looking for (number pad, key spacing, etc).
I actually have a full size USB keyboard that I wouldn't mind throwing into my backpack. With the amount of space I save with the SP3, a full keyboard really could be useful. And you'd look hella weird if you pulled it out in class or something.

Please do, my solution to the heat throttling has always been an external fan, with that I am able to achieve pretty close to maximum performance. Though undervolting would mean I wouldn't have to carry around a usb dock and fan for gaming away from home...

I have a Surface Pro 2, and the second, lower level that the kickstand can go to is pretty good for using on your lap. Can't speak for the first gen surfaces though.

Alternatively, I have this case which takes the kickstand out of the equation completely and allows you many more options when it comes to angling the screen. I love it.

I'm the type that gets battery anxiety when my SP4 gets near 50%, which happens way too fast (they really should make battery life a priority with the next one, even if it means a slightly thicker/heavier device), but the QI Infinity power bank has solved that. Works great.

It's a bit pricey, but I needed a second charger anyway so I just had to spend a little more and get a massive power pack included in the price.

Awhile back I also dropped my old SP3 about two feet onto pavement, the bag slipped off my shoulder whilst bending down. Bag was lightly padded but no case. Struck edge first diagonally on the corner, the screen shattered like a wine glass.

Amusingly enough this was in the parking lot of the microsoft store that I was going to, i had just gotten out of my car. literally 10 minutes and $49 later I had a brand new SP3 in hand.

Complete is just epic.

I don't really play games on my computer, mostly just Civ, so it's one of the few games I have installed on the SSD. I actually just ordered the BaseQi microSD card adapter so the memory card will sit flush in the SB for more semi-permanent capacity. I'll just be using my memory card for regular files like documents and photos.

Programs that depend on fast read/writes, like games or photo/video editors or whatever, I plan to put right on the main SSD.

edit: Scratch that, I'll probably also put some emulators on the SSD, but I can put the games on the memory card, even if the read speed is slower than the SSD. It'll be easier that way to balance storage and performance, and it'll still be way faster than if I were using the original CDs/DVDs games would have come on.

Pretty heavy, but protects the top and bottom well.

My complaints about it:

1. I either accidentally press the side button or have to make an effort to find the side button when I actually want to press it. It's flush with the barrel, which makes it difficult with the way I hold the pen.
   
   
2. I'm not a fan of the black finish. It's almost like sandpaper. I might just return it for the carbon one.
   
   I also have the Fujitsu T5000 pen, which is almost ideal for me. Having two side buttons is amazing. I do find that it's more sensitive to angle drift than the Bamboo Feel or even the SP pen, though.
   
   I wish there were a two side button rocker switch version of the Bamboo Feel pen. That would be perfect.

I'm using the Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard. It's bluetooth and works great, but its just a regular keyboard. I brought the Microsoft Designer Mouse with it. They are both low profile and are can easily slip into my purse or bag, they both are travel friendly. I've decided to use my SP3 as a home laptop though, and buy a S3 to take with me on the go.

Point it at the top right of the back of the SP4, or top left if you are looking at the back.

I wouldn't bother with a screen protector if you use the type cover. But to answer your question, the pen will work fine with it. The pen resistance or feel will be different and the touch feel will be different, and the reflections from the screen will be different.

Have you thought about back ups? External monitor? Adaptor to use TV? Bigger speakers, headphones?

The top half is heavy and I know the back of my SP4/SP gets warm without a cover so this probably isn't helping with heat dissipation. Covering the back of the device is pretty much common to all cases it seems so I don't know if this is better or not. It doesn't lay flat against the case, it has some ridges to lift it up which probably makes it dissipate heat better. There are holes that line up with the vent holes.

Depending on the monitor, the most you might need is an mDP to HDMI (preferably active) adapter for about $18 or maybe a Mini DP to DP Cable for $9 if your monitor supports it. If you start to think multi-monitor (screen real estate) I'm a fan of the Microsoft Dock, which gives you two mDP and other nice features like 4 full-powered USB 3.0 ports.

Well, a little late to the discussion. Just want to point out that I have had good luck with the Plugable adapter for 4k 60hz HDMI 2.0 output to a 4k TV if somebody needs that functionality. There aren't too many options for this capability.....

It actually does pretty well. I can be programming/running code/running matlab and it'll hover around 45 - 50, maybe 60 if I go at it. It's just not covered though so if it hits your surface, it will leave a scratch. its a possibility if you use an external usb hub and move the surface around

That's what I used on my surface pro 1 until the release of the power cover. I found mind on sale for 20 bucks. Its a solid keyboard, and the cover it ships with can be folded to act like an impromptu kickstand, which is great for phones or small tablets.

I've had my Surface Pro 1 since launch. The powder coat paint tends to flake off with use. This has been true of about any device I've had with similar paint. Mine has really started to come off around the stand hinges and power port from much use. I ended up just getting this case and not worrying about it much. One day I'll get bored and flake off all the paint. The metal underneath looks pretty nice.

- With the clear case, if you have the 15" Surface Book 2, you're good to go. If you have the 13.5" version, the clear case isn't as good.

I use the Figitsu Lifebook pen T5000 http://www.amazon.com/Fujitsu-Digitizer-replacement-Stylus-T5000/dp/B00791UTH2 with my Pro 1 (Since it's wacom, it would work with a pro 2 as well.) The plus side is it's cheaper than the Feel stylus, it uses standard Wacom nibs (not the smaller feel ones), has two buttons and an eraser.

I also use a matte screen protector. Really helps add resistance to the pen, especially using a felt pen-nib.

I use Paint Tool SAI primarily to draw. I love it.

It's why I sold mine. I had to be too precious about it. Constantly cleaning and wiping it - and terrified of scratches.

I have a LG-49UJ6500 that has HDMI 2.0 and I use it for my desktop outputting 4k @ 60hz 4:4:4, was just looking to setup my surface pro so I can bring it home from work to get stuff done on the weekends. Pretty cool so far. I got it since I didn't want a sleeve case so I needed a case with corner protection. Also spent a lot of time on amazon reading reviews on different cases. This one seems like the only one I've found so far that has all the pros without any cons except one. Only one guy said that the little slot to hold the pen is a little thick so it stretched out his clipper on the pen. So he can't clip it onto his shirt for example. I still bought the case and I was thinking about sanding down the little slot so its thinner so I don't have the same problem. Or I may use that loop that came with the keyboard and attach it to the case elsewhere.

Keyboard flips back all the way as well as the magnetic tilt. That's what was my main concern while searching cases

It's a smaller keyboard, but was fine for whatever i needed one for. As a bonus, it appears to be on sale for $35 today.

I am currently using a Kensington Black Belt 2nd Degree for a couple months now. It is not bulky and offers good protection for the back and sides of my SP4. Another positive note is that it allows full mobility of the keyboard. You can keep it magnetically attached and fold it back all the way if you want to use tablet mode.

The case is so slim that it can be also placed in a sleeve or laptop bag if that is how you transport your SP.

I'd go with the i7. It is nearly twice as fast, because it is an 8th gen CPU. (5000 benchmark v. 9000 benchmark) and I think you'll encounter better battery life on it as well.

I personally got a 256gb SD card and mater to it to the Base QI adapter. It works for my needs and is far more mobile than an external SSD. The drawback to any external storage on the surface book though, is that it becomes inaccessible when removing the screen, so the other alternatives are to look at cloud storage options such as One Drive, which will cost more long-term due to subscription costs. So, I'd suggest weighing up what suits you best.

As for the contacts, use a Q-tip and LIGHTLY go over them with specialised contact cleaner.

I have a surface S3 with I7 for over a year now and I love it. Most of your bugs I've experienced at some point or other. Windows 10 originally had a pretty rough start on minor bugs but Microsoft has started releasing patches at a faster rate which helped a lot of these.

1. Keep updating windows.. This use to be a common problem for more then just surface, (my gf has a lenovo laptop with touch and it would break there too) but it went away sometime ago. (Use to be a weekly problem but I haven't experienced it in a few months)
   
   
2. I had to disable windows defender for similar issues. Not sure if updating or what helped but ya the overheating is a real issue. I bought a usb small fan on amazon for about $7 to plug into my computer to blow air on the top right corner of the computer. This helps a lot with overheating, (especially when gaming). For the process being stuck, it sounds like a bug =/. I use to see this issue but it went away. For me it was this "app module installer". Very annoying but I haven't had an issue like this in months.

4. Try letting update run for a long period of time. I had the same problem and learned that the % isn't accurate. If you don't have the windows anniversary version it might be downloading a very large update and could be stuck there for a long time.
   
   I donno if I was very helpful but try to plug into a solid internet and download all the updates, the Surface has come a long way in terms of reliability. Microsoft redesigned a lot of code with windows 8+ and it came at a cost.

I purchased this MiniDP to HDMI,DVI,VGA off of Amazon. For the lulz I plugged three things all at once and the SP3 just mirrored to all three (a known limitation of this adapter) and it worked fine.
Seriously though, I use this adapter occasionally to watch shows onto an HDTV. The sound and picture quality are really good, and haven't had any issues with it so far.

Any bluetooth keyboard will work. Of course whether they're any good is something else.

I use a small usb fan pointed at the top right to completely eliminate thermal throttling, the bigger issue is actually power limit throttling, this caps the package at ~25watts (IIRC) which limits scenarios where the CPU and GPU are being pushed simultaneously (Like gaming).

I recommend this adapter if you have to use HDMI. Otherwise find yourself a good Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

The surface dock has a mini-displayport port. So you need a active mini displayport to hdmi adapter.

After 7 months one of the plastic tabs broke so it may have been worth ordering two at the prices they sell for on Amazon. Also, I dropped my Surface while it was encased in it from a height of about 3 ft. at the airport and it survived... maybe just lucky though.

I have been looking at the wacom bamboo stylus suggested, but this stylus has had my interest so far. I like the idea of an extra button on the side and it has an eraser, too. I'll probably order it tomorrow if not tonight.

You could try some Alcantara Cleaner. It's worth a shot. I'm thinking you are probably out of luck, though.
