To be honest, it might be a little challenging to "jump in" at a random trade since you may not be up to date on the story. I recommend reading the whole thing, but I know that there are a ton of trades and that can get pricey.
I really enjoyed the City Fall arc and is probably my favorite link 1, link2
But to be honest, I highly recommend reading the entire run. You can stick to just the main story and get by without much hiccup (they do a good job of giving a couple sentence summary on the miniseries as their plots come to affect the main story. So I would recommend volumes 1, 2, and 3 to start. If you get into it, you'll be happy you started from the beginning instead of spoiling the later events.
Please ask if you are looking for further help! This IDW arc is my all-time favorite.
Good concept, look forward to seeing your progress. If you need some inspiration or similar material check out Lone Wolf & Cub manga. Dark Horse published the uncensored versions in original format and are outstanding.
Authors Kazuo Koike Goseki Kojima thoroughly researched items for era accuracy and their attention to detail and cultural nuances are spectacular. The footnotes help us understand details within the stories.
Good luck!
Yes you should start with number 1 as it's a new story
This is the current series. There are other spin offs but this is it
The best thing for you to do is get the hardcover IDW Collection - https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Collection/dp/1631401114/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?keywords=ninja+turtles+ultimate+collection&qid=1563164306&s=gateway&sprefix=ninja+turtles+ultimaye&sr=8-9
This collects the books with side stories in order. If you only buy these books you'll be SET
I am 32 I am loving it. As for a younger child not sure depends on the kid. It might be too violent for a younger kid which in that case they have comics that mimic the animated series that may be best for you.
The current series is simply teenage Mutant ninja turtles and it's by IDW. There is a TMNT universe book but that's far down the line. Stick to the book that I linked above and itll make the multiple book issue go away. Hope I helped and let me know if you need anything else
I personally like the IDW collections. They are hard bound editions, full color and contain the main series and the micro series in chronological order. I went this route after trying to read them digitally and quickly learned I was not understanding the references of the micro series as they weren't included. They may be included in the Comixology, but when i downloaded the issues for Kindle, there were not.
I order the books from Amazon and they are normally below $40. They are fantastic collector pieces and are stories I turn to often. Here is a link to Vol. 1.
https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Collection/dp/1631401114/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497846307&sr=8-3&keywords=idw+collection
The series is fantastic, you won't be disappointed.
It depends on what you mean by graphic novels. You can pick up the most excellent IDW series or the original series as collected editions cheaply on Amazon. But if you are looking for original graphic novels that were never printed as single issues then you are out of luck. There isn't anything that wasn't previously published first as comic series first.
Raph was always my favorite too. I also ended up with mostly Leo and Mikey stuff. Hell the small collection I have where I live is all Mikey stuff. I think it's mostly because people assume since I love the turtles and my favorite color is orange that Mikey must be my favorite.
My small collection includes a wallet, a foot tall or so action figure a friend had for a long time, a reversible stocking cap, and a goblet/cup.
Since I share my opinion with many people here, I'll show this weird one off art style -
https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Activity/dp/0679811087
This activity book (scroll down for actual cover) had some neat art in it, and I always liked it as a kid. The Turtles look kinda goofy to be honest. I have the book somewhere.

That's the only interior page I could find right now.
Is there an easy way to buy all of these episodes? Something like this would be awesome. Tracking down individual DVDs is slow and really expensive.
The 6 volume (so far) Ultimate Collectors compilations of the original comics are nice. They come with cool commentary from Laird and Eastman and are nicely hardcover bound.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1613770073/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_CQXozbB58A6BJ
You pretty much need to read them in order (including a lot of the one-shots and tie-ins) as it is all a single, overarching story. It's like asking which of the six books of Lord of the Rings you recommend.
For pricing, Comixology often has sales on TMNT comics and generally the digital copies are half or a third the price of trades. You can also check out your local library to see if they have the trades (or they might be able to get them for you through intralibrary loan). You can also buy digitally off Amazon directly too.
But if you want something physical, start with the hardcover, it collects the first 12 issues of the series plus the five one-shots and is only $35.
The original Mirage comics definitely aren't for kids. The turtles straight up kill people in a few instances, and there's some language--though, it's probably tame PG-13 in most cases. But the 2003 series followed the comics most faithfully, thought there were still some differences.
But you can get the hardcover issues either in black and white or in color. I don't know if they are going to release them in paperback, since the hardcovers are a bit pricey.
EDIT: forgot about the IDW reboot. That's pretty good to, and incorporates things like Rocksteady and Bebop and the Technodrome from the 80's cartoon. Also reimagines Splinter and Shredder's history in a but of an out-there way.
The original mirage comics are being released in these hardcover edition and the current IDW books you can pick up the paper back there are currently 8 volumes of the paper back's main story line with another 8 for side stories. Both are good I would recommend the IDW it is still ongoing so more issues are coming out.
Edit: fixed a word
Let's see... the inside cover reads:

The new IDW comics that started in 2011 are my favorite TMNT comics and high among my favorite comics all together.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1631401114
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection Volume 2 https://www.amazon.com/dp/163140539X
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection Volume 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1631406914
That's about 60% through the run or so.
If you can wait a little Nick is releasing the first season as a complete set finally. Amazon as it for pre-order for a great price. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LN87984/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_3Dx8tb11T2MMH
Been a fan since the original cartoon and movies, but just got into the comics this year. I high recommend this http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Collection/dp/1613770073/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1347156168&sr=8-3&keywords=ninja+turtles+collection
I'm pretty sure the entire farm scene was based off of this

Usagi is essentially 33 trades and then the new Issue #1 from IDW. These are almost all available in cheap omnibus collections, though.
Fantagraphics has a 2 part omnibus collection Usagi Yojimbo: The Special Edition. This covers the first 7 volumes of the book.
Usagi Yojimbo: The Special Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/1606998870/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lI5kDbKG12VTQ
After that, Dark Horse has a 9 omnibus set called The Usagi Yojimbo Saga. This will take you from volume 8 to 32, including Space Usagi, Yokai, and Senso in a volume called Legends.
Usagi Yojimbo Saga Volume 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1616556099/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_UI5kDb889C48M
After that, is volume 33, The Hidden. That, coupled with the new IDW issue #1 would be the whole run.

That is odd. Its on the U.S. amazon for 36.92

Im pretty sure thats the book you are talking about.
Thanks for the heads up. It's listed for the U.S. Amazon at $12.96 preorder.

Still dvd but here’s the whole collection in a party wagon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Classic Series Collection https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009474UW4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_McQCCb6QSK4T4
I suggest reading it all. They are coming out with this in April IDW Collection 1.
If you are looking to just read it instead of collecting, then I would do it digitally. It's like 2 bucks an issue through amazon.
I think you got this: https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Unleashed/dp/1631405764/ Yeah, it's a weird collection. It's bigger than the normal TPBs (like Change is Constant) since it has 12 issues, but it doesn't have the mini series like the IDW Collection hardcovers. It's main comic only. They also have a Volume 2 (#13-24 - https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Darkness/dp/1684050359/ ) and Volume 3 (#25-36 - https://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Fall/dp/1684052521 )
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-Volume/dp/1613771398/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372082196&sr=8-3&keywords=tmnt+idw
that is volume 1. You know it's the current TMNT when it has Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, and Dan Duncan for creators on the covers. There are also some mini series with other writers and such that can be found in the "Customers Who Bought This Item" section.
Hope this helps.
As /u/osrud mentioned they have rereleased them recently. At a recent con I saw them in a big hard cover collection, one BW The other in colour. I believe they can also be found on amazon here and also here

The commentary from Kevin n Pete makes it worth it, let alone the HUGE dimensions of the book itself. If you can't do b&w, they have color hardcovers called "the works", but they're not k&P's original vision
