Burritos:

Get a bunch of burrito sized tortillas, 2 cans of 8oz pinto beans per 12-14 burritos, a block of cheddar cheese, get a cheap rotisserie chicken or buy some chicken breasts (if you have time and want to save money, get bone in,skin on chicken thighs and debone them), and one 8 oz can of salsa verde for every 12-14 you want to make.

Cook the chicken (debone first if you got the thighs)- I like to season the thighs with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano. Just put it skin side down on the pan and it makes it's own oil, put oregano only on the non-skin side. If using breasts I cut it up before cooking and season it in a bowl or bag because it's faster and I've got stuff to do, right?

Mix all the other ingredients. 2 cans of pinto beans, about 2 cups of the cheese, one 8 oz can of salsa verde, and mix in the chicken that you've cooked and cut up into tiny bites if not already done. Put a couple scoops on the tortilla and fold it like you do for burritos. Here's a couple videos. 1 2 I use the first way, but hey, it's your burrito. (Not according to that guy on the burrito video though, omg, it's a burrito not a chess game).

Freeze them if you'd like to. I wrap them in a paper towel first so they don't stick together and put them in a freezer bag. Then when I want to eat them I take them out and throw them in the microwave on defrost for a couple minutes until they're soft all the way through. Heat it up another minute or so, then I put them in a pan (I use cast iron because that's what you do when you're awesome) to get the outside crispy. Then you eat. Don't burn your tongue.

Chicken fried rice

Make the chicken thighs I said above.

Make 3 cups of rice. I use white rice but it's up to you I guess. Put it in the fridge for a day. I find it tastes better that way. If you don't have that kind of time because you're a person and not a hermit like me, you can cook it today too. I use this rice cooker because it's easier than cooking it in a pot. By far the best purchase of my culinary life It may be cheaper at Target, but this gets shipped to your house and Target is a trap. Don't go in there.

Buy some frozen mixed veggies. I get a huge bag from costco, but then I'm feeding 6 people every day so you may want a smaller bag.

Get your essential spices: For fried rice I like to use pepper, crushed red pepper (just a little, I don't want it to overpower the other flavors, just want a tiny bit of heat), garlic powder (tiny bit), ground ginger, and ground turmeric. You can also use crushed or minced garlic if you don't want to use the garlic powder. Also have soy sauce and if you're REALLY fancy get some sesame seed oil and sesame seeds. The seeds add like NOTHING to the taste, but if you're bringing a date home and want to impress them, this is where it's at. Also chives can be chopped up in there at the end for garnish. Look at you, gourmet chef!

If you're REALLY FANCY then put that fancy sesame seed oil in a pan, toss in the minced or crushed garlic, and heat it up for a short bit to let your house smell nice. Then throw in the rice. Pour on a bit of soy sauce. Then throw in a handful of the frozen veggies. Don't use a measuring cup unless you're getting an engineering degree. Now sprinkle in any or all of the spices I mentioned above, but I'd recommend not skipping the ginger. That's pretty important to the flavor. If you want it to look nice, don't skip the turmeric, sesame seeds, or chives.

Now throw in the chicken from earlier. I cook up a whole bunch since I buy from costco and put it in the fridge, so I take it out and microwave it for a short bit before throwing it in the pan. You don't have to though. Now mix it up a bit to let the flavors even out. When it's ready, push everything to a side of the pan, take an egg and crack it on the empty side, scramble it, and then mix it all up again. Dump it in a monster sized bowl because you're in college and then garnish because, well, it's also a date. Then enjoy :)

---

I got more but kids have had enough screen time so I'm going now. But I'd recommend you watch these guys. They are great and taught me to not worry so much about measuring every little thing. It makes dishes harder and makes cooking take more time, so I'm glad I'm moving away from that.

YOU DON'T ASK ME A GODDAMN THING I'M THE ONE WHO ASKS THE QUESTIONS HERE BUDDY

but yeah the name of the biography is truly inspired

I liked it but sometimes the author gets a bit highbrow for me and there's a lot of times in the book where he just straight up doesn't fuckin' even attempt to translate whatever french idiom is being used so then you're left to google the shit by yourself

also I think he oversimplifies ravel's life too much at times and because of that sometimes it's like it puts him in a really simplified portrait; or it doesn't really put him in a realistic light sometimes (at the very least I can't relate to it for those times anyways)

that's not really the biographer's fault though the dude's probably trying to do the best with what he's got and the rest he's kinda gotta make an educated guess, but those times are pretty apparent af when it happens

besides that it was fun to read about ravel and the shit he was up to back in the day, it's also a pretty good book for learning about ravel's influences and the people who were influenced by him/his contemporaries; I really liked reading the early parts about ravel's life because they're not as well-known and nearly had a bad case of the sads near the end of the book

as for instruments I play guitar and I'm pretty bad at it, I also play piano but I'm even worse at that

do you play any?

You know what else is highly therapeutic, man? Painting! If you haven't ever really tried it, you dont have to be very good, maybe watch a couple quick technique & color mixing videos on YouTube if ya want but I highly recommend spending about $20 on a brush set, some acrylic paint and some small ~8x10 canvases -- see if ya like it! I suggest acrylic paint because I find it easier to work with when starting off and I prefer it to oil & watercolor paints anyway but that is just me. Acrylic paint is very easy to work with and mistakes are easily fixed.

I recently got back into painting after I hadnt painted for years, since high school. Very relaxing to put on some music or a podcast and just chill while painting whatever I feel like. Here are some amazon prime eligible items that could get ya started!

Acrylic paint - 12 colors - $7
15 quaity paint brushes - $6
Set of three 8x10 canvases - $6
Or you could get a canvas pad book. This one is $6 & has 10 canvas pads

Think about giving it a shot!

Sennheiser HD650- music heaven but expensive. At this point though, it's only going to sound as good as the quality of the music files you have. Amp semi-required

Sennheiser HD598- step below the HD650s. Equal treble and mids, not much bass but these are the headphones that makes you appreciate the clear sound without it.

Klipsch X10- very treble-y, it sometimes hurts, but if these weren't the clearest sounding in-ear headphones I've ever had I don't know what. Fairly wide soundstage. I've washed them twice and they still work.

MEE M-Duos- These are the cheapest of the bunch. I was pleasantly surprised at the sound of them. As clean and clear sound as the HD598 but with much more bass. My favorite tbh

Also shoutout to /r/headphones check out their wiki

Check out Jon Ronson! I've only read two of his books, The Psychopath Test and Lost at Sea, but they were both really good.

Here are a couple daily show interviews about the books if you want to get a feel for them. They're super entertaining. He's also had a couple segments on This American Life about similar subject matter.

On a different note, Salt is also way more interesting than it has any right to be.

There are others but oh god I really need to be studying for my exams.

The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives

I read this 5 or 6 years ago and really enjoyed it. Has a lot of math, but includes a lot of history and some psychology as well.

From the Amazon page:

"By showing us the true nature of chance and revealing the psychological illusions that cause us to misjudge the world around us, Mlodinow gives us the tools we need to make more informed decisions. From the classroom to the courtroom and from financial markets to supermarkets, Mlodinow's intriguing and illuminating look at how randomness, chance, and probability affect our daily lives will intrigue, awe, and inspire."

I love these. I've had two pair over the past.... 6 years? (damn!)

The audio quality, range, and durability are all excellent.

I've played a couple seasons of TagPro w/ these babies and I've never had any complaints with them.

There is one minor software flaw with them, but that is easily fixed by installing an older driver for Windows.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Two words: Index funds

Vanguard is the leader in providing reputable index funds with outrageously low fees. A lot of mutual funds will charge an expense ratio of 0.5% to 2%, which doesn't sound like a lot, but adds up big time in the long run. Vanguard's index fund expense ratios can be as low as 0.05% Considering that the bulk of managed mutual funds don't regularly beat the market, the index fund seems like the best bet for the everyday investor.

Set up an IRA, or an employee sponsored 401k, and begin putting in an affordable amount every month (dollar-cost averaging). Don't worry if the market is up or down, it all balances out in the end (timing the market is impossible for the average investor, and in the long run doesn't matter much anyways). Read up on bogleheads, check out r/investing, don't try to time the market, and remember that dollar-cost averaging is your friend.

I know Sennheiser is always pretty legit! I have a pair of these: Here and the quality is so good! The actual headphones are a tad fragile for my liking (The headband has been known to snap but warranty covers the repair.) But the sound quality is really nice.

I don't know about Audio Technica... never heard of them. Reading stuff like this might help.

Audio Technica MSR7. Got them in November, and they're fantastic especially for a music lover like me. I have them in gunmetal/red, so they're sexy too.

u/flappytowel · 1 pointr/TagProIRL

Grab some of these as backup headphones. They're cheap, really good sound-wise, and will last forever.

Well they are better than apple earpods anyway :)
