You can probably carefully remove the weapon systems and clean up and replace them with the correct loadout for O'vesa if you really wanted to make The Eight without causing too much hassle, but as has already been stated, magnets are a godsend for that.

I do have a list somewhere i can dig out that actually runs 2 riptides with The Eight that has worked well for me in the past, and the non O'Vesa riptide runs a Burst Cannon/SMS loadout, so if you weren't opposed to buying another riptide you could run a similar list.

In general though, you'll probably want a couple start collecting boxes, even if you don't use the extra Crisis Suits much, the extra weapons and drones included are incredible value and if you work out individual cost, those Crisis Suits only cost around £6-8 when bought with that box.

Fire Warriors are pretty much a must for almost any really competitive list, the 2 start collecting boxes would give you 20, so you could run 3 squads of 6 and use the Ethereal and the Commander from the Apocalypse set to make a Batallion.

You've got a lot of options really that open up with the combination of Apocalypse Box and the start collecting sets, so that's probably where i'd look to expand. Without knowing what you're aiming for though, whether it be casual list, hyper competitive, or just a fluffy lore based list, its hard to suggest something. It's probably worth downloading Battlescribe and just having a play and see what you have and what you can fit in whatever points limit you set yourself.

Regarding magnets, this Pin Vise and a pack of these magnets are super cheap, and will handle most of your magnetising needs for Tau, and its definitely something you should consider moving forward as Tau loadouts are vastly interchangeable depending on what you want to do with them.

Anyway good luck! People here are always willing to help so feel free to ask any questions as you progress!

Good on you for jumping into it! First of all you definitely want to thin down your paints. Here is a good video on how to do so by the best 40k painter in the world. Secondly, if you are having trouble with some of the straight line bits like on the chest, neck, and leg pads of the commander, painters tape can help you practice and keep things straight. It's not the most reliable tool so I wouldn't use it as a crutch but it will help as you get more experience. Tamiya masking tape is decent and used a lot in the model painting community. Lastly, I'm not sure what size brush you're using but it could be that getting a smaller one will help. Keeping a medium brush around is good for painting large sections but I'd recommend picking up something like an artificer brush and painting with just the very tip of it to work on smaller detailed sections.

You don't actually need a drill, there are hand drills on Amazon that hold a bit. Heck, you can even just carve out the hole with a bit in your hand, or just an exacto knife.

As others have implied, if you aren't skilled yet and don't have much money, this is actually the best time to learn how to magnetize.

If you need more recommendations on what exactly to do, and what tools to use, just ask. The community is here for you.

Edits for links to el cheapo drills which work awesome for magnetizing:

https://www.amazon.com/GPSGO-Precision-0-5-3-0mm-Electronic-Assembling/dp/B07PCNDFLV

The best option is these two items:

https://www.amazon.com/Tacklife-SDP51DC-Cordless-Rechargeable-Screwdriver/dp/B075RWV5LB

https://www.amazon.com/COMOWARE-Titanium-Twist-Drill-Bit/dp/B07D9J6JLD

Note that for mini cordless drills you need bits with a 1/4" hex shank to fit into the chuck of those drills. I used a set up like those two items to magnetize 10 firewarriors and 10 pathfinders in the span of a out an hour. If I can do it, you can do it.

IDK if Citadel makes one specifically, I'm sure they do, but like a lot of their products, you're often better off getting a different brand that's just as good quality (and frequently better) as well as being cheaper.

What I personally use is Testors clear: https://www.amazon.com/Testors-Spray-Lacquer-Clear-Coat/dp/B009FF6DN4

You don't have to use a lot, just enough to get an even coat over the whole miniature. Be sure to spray this outside or in a well-ventilated area. Also, don't forget that when you're done coating your models, to hold the spray can upside down and spray the excess for a couple seconds until it's just spraying the medium -- that way it clears out the spray mechanism. If you don't, it'll be clogged up next time you go to use it. This is true for all kinds of spray cans, including primers -- it's a common rookie mistake, so just mentioning it in case you haven't worked with this stuff yet.

It's a little blurry, but it looks like you need to mesh the greenstuff onto the cloak a little better. It looks like there is a gap between the two?

Having the gap on the shoulders is fine, since it is sitting on top of them, but you want it to blend into the cloak itself, since it is supposed to be part of it.

Do you have a sculpting tool? They help a lot when dealing with greenstuff, especially for keeping your fingerprints off of it.

This is what I use;

I use two of these for my Tau currently. Not sure how they'd cope with larger models though. They fit broadsides and up to Ghostkeel quite easily though.

For my Tyranids which have a few bigger things I use this tool box I've magenetised the bases of all my models. Can fit up to a Trygon in height but lying down (it's magnetised to the side of the box).

The soft cases are pretty good against drops but can easily be crushed, the tool box is pretty much uncrushable but not great at sudden drops. Think I've ended up preferring the tool box though because;

  1. it's really cool to have it unfold open full of models
  • it's super quick to unpack and repack compared to foam.

I purchased this guy for $64.82. It was an Open Box unit on the Amazon Warehouse Deals. Literally, still shrink wrapped, just in a different box. No damage. Usually a $200-250 air compressor. I was given my first airbrush (my daily driver) as payment during a commission. It is a Badger Patriot 105. I was intimidated by it for over a year and then I decided to jump head first one day and honestly, I haven't looked back. Only regret was not starting sooner. Amazon has the Badger Patriot 105 on sale for $75. At the beginning of the year Badger Airbrush company ran a Happy 54th Birthday Sale and I picked up the Badger Renegade Krome for $54 haha. It retails for $200-250 but Amazon has it on sale for $102. I have yet to use this guy yet, but I am nearing the end of a project and I am going to give it a whirl in a couple weekends. The Airbrush hose for the badgers are listed as well.

My Compressor:

Alternative Compressor 1

Alternative Compressor 2

My 1st Airbrush

My 2nd Airbrush

Compressor Hose

With that being said, you can find deals ALL OVER THE INTERNET....you just have to look for them. I am always scowering the web for the best deals possible haha. For the past 3 years I have been using a 5hp construction grade pancake compressor with a moisture trap. Let me tell you....I REGRET not upgrading to an airbrush compressor much sooner. The air is more consistent, you can fine tune the correct PSI and it is exponentially more quiet. I personally don't care about the tank feature, but that is a personal preference.

Hope this helps you all :D

I've been using 1/8" for everything for a super secure connection that I can paint over without weakening. Same company though as I feel their magnets find a good compromise between strength and size.

u/PaladinWiggles · 1 pointr/Tau40K

I used a full sized power drill like an absolute madman on my xv8's & riptide.

Just take your time and use pilot holes and you'll be 100% fine. (though yes next time I magnetize I'm just going to buy a hand drill, Amazon has one for $12)

These are the exact ones I use, bulk deal in two sizes, most people think that because these arent name brand or anything they dont hold but mine hold great, one 3x1mm holds on my riptides entire gun. For the basses just attach like three to the undersides of the basses and then sand paper them down to flush. Or dremel if you got one.
For toolboxes, idk one was my dads old one that he didnt use another is a random metal one I got at walmart.

I use craft organizers. You can usually find something like this at hobby stores. Otherwise, tackle boxes are fantastic for...well...everything. I've built multiple first-aid kits out of tackle boxes.

This is the booth I have, I really like it, it lights up really well, the fan suction is no where near strong enough to effect sprays or move light pieces but enough to keep the particles and such going out of it:

I also use 1/16" magnets for the subsytems, if you feel like magnetizing those.

Yeah the army painter drill is just a pin vice drill from the looks of it which is the kind used for magnetizing models.

This here is a set of 100 magnets and a matching size drill bit that I used to magnetize my smaller minis.
