I bought the rod linked below on amazon and it is amazing quality for the price.

I didn't know that TRC included a tippet ring... -you are talkinga bout a 1.5mm little ring, right? Is this built into the furled line?

EDIT: I have the same rod, and I just dug the furled line that came with it out of my box of "never use" stuff. Mine has a pretty typical looking tippet ring integrated in a cerise furled line. I put the ring under a loupe, it is not rough or in any way looking like a tippet-cutter. I have never tied a tippet on it or fished with it though.

One thing that is very important with tippet, -ESPECIALLY flourocarbon, is to wet the knot with spit before tightening, and to tighten slowly. Otherwise, friction heats the know and the line becomes very weak right at the knot. Use a double-davy knot, and wet it while seating it.

With all that said, just switch to level line and a pack of tippet rings. Furled lines stink. Get a 3.0 or 3.5 level line like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008JCDGL6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

OP here again:

Thanks again for the explanation and the diagram, it makes a lot of sense (though I still have to actually try it, of course).

If you are willing to offer to show me the basics at McLaren I will definitely take you up on that and would compensate you for your time (cash or trade); we can work out the details via private message if you are serious about that.

In another post you recommended the DRAGONtail Shadowfire: if I was to order this set: https://www.amazon.com/DRAGONtail-Tenkara-Shadowfire-Complete-Starter/dp/B00N36YY1O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1503095765&sr=8-3&keywords=tenkara, what else do you think I would need to get started.

Again, thank you for taking your time to explain this stuff to someone you is completely clueless; I really appreciate it!

(edit, damn I'm an idiot, I corrected the link)

I think so. I use this. It's diameter is 4x but the strength is 5x so it is lower quality but you get 100yards instead of 30 meters so it's like 3x more and costs around $5.

I don't see a lot of people recommending this, but I love my 11' rod: Maxcatch Tenkara Rod
