>That's why entertainment (be it blockbusters, video games, TV shows) is so dependent on marketing. You can have the BEST show in the world, if you can't make it trend at the start, nobody will ever know about ot watch it. And the most expensive to produce, the more important it is that a LOT of people watch it

In general, yes. When you have a large amount of fixed costs to develop programming, you want to spread it over a large amount of viewers, in an advertising supported model. But in a different business model, where you obtain revenues from other sources (be it subscriptions like HBO or Netflix, or payments from international distribution platforms), it's not so obvious that more viewers from once source = more profitable.

It's clear that TV is in an age of experimentation with a number of different business models, blurring with business models from cinema, etc. Sure, everyone wants a blockbuster! But it's not the case that only blockbusters are profitable and worth continuing for those who make it. The only thing for sure is "nobody knows anything" in terms of what makes one or more content properties a success - it's a truism in the economics of the film business.

The role of marketing in garnerning more eyeballs is a whole other topic ;-)

No, it was originally a pitch by Ty Franck for a MMORPG for a Chinese ISP, as an incentive for consumers to sign up for the service. It didn't really go anywhere but Franck now had assembled his formerly random ideas and research about a human-occupied solar system into piles of careful notes.

Ty then he started to run it as a roleplaying game on a post-to-play gaming forum. He opened up a private forum with threads for each round, for each character, their actions and out-of-character commentary.

Eventually he ran it as a tabletop RPG with some people including Melinda Snodgrass, Ian Tregillis, and George R.R. Martin. He ended up becoming good friends with Daniel Abraham (who played Miller), and had more writing credits under his belt, and they decided to write a novel in the universe of The Expanse "for pizza money".

If you have Amazon Prime...

Looking for some relaxing, educational, space-related TV to learn about our great solar system that is the backdrop of the first three seasons of The Expanse? Interested in the history of NASA missions and what they have shown us? Have some little ones that are curious about astronomy who need to be entertained for an episode or two?

Try these. All included on Amazon Prime.

> and designate Pluto a minor planetoid.

I've heard stories about him being not so nice too, but I'm pretty sure you can't hang that solely on him. It was voted on at an IAU conference and while NDT may have been a public face, he certainly wasn't at fault. The one person who (humorously) takes credit is Mike Brown who actually discovered the first Kuiper belt object larger than Pluto which sort of forced the vote. He has a really interesting short book about the whole thing if you want to read it.

> He's a famous scientist, not a saint.

Yea, he's a science communicator or a science popularize.

These precut heat shrink tubing off Amazon. First time trying this, so I have nothing to compare them against, probably something better out there, but they worked just fine.

Underneath is just cheap printer paper through a color laser printer. All the shine is coming from the clear tubing. Could probably improve the quality further by using better/shinier paper but that stuff is also thicker and I don't know how close these tolerances are before it will no longer fit in a mod box. With just the paper added its already a noticeable tighter fit. Higher quality paper might put it over the edge into not fitting.

Adrian Tarn Series The first two books are free and the rest are only .99 cents each. Definitely a great story and worth way more than what they are being sold for! Check them out for sure!

[Reposted with correction]

Amazon Video has UFO, but it's a bit pricey at $44.99 ($1.73 per episode) (SD only).

https://www.amazon.com/UFO/dp/B00DYQ57UK/

UFO and 1999 were formerly on Hulu, but not now unfortunately.

They were legally free on Yahoo View for a while, but not now.
(Another legally free source, ShoutFactory, now has 1999 but not UFO)

ergotron makes a ton of articulating arms for monitor and tablets. i’ve had several standing desks by them and they’ve all worked really nicely and feel super sturdy so I feel comfortable recommending.

this one looks like it would have a similar range of motion, though it doesn’t look nearly as cool: Ergotron MX Mini Desk Mount Arm (45-436-026) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D32STOK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WHidBbPBFX6QY

That would be amazing, something like a Haynes manual for the Roci would work great.

I think you're unlikely to get it fully screen accurate, but if you aim for something with the correct silhouette I think you'll be set. Looks like a pleather-esque single breasted jacket with the collar popped/modified may do the trick.

Something like this may be a good jumping off point. I searched "stand collar jacket"

Here it is at Amazon in UHD: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01MT0UHLT/ref=atv_wtlp_wtl_0

The dropdown lets you get to season 2.

Season 3 isn't available yet in UHD, as far as I know.

I find it easiest to add stuff to the Amazon watchlist from the website. That way, you can just go to your watchlist once you're in your smart TV/Blu-ray player/streaming device's Amazon app.

u/BoTony · 1 pointr/TheExpanse

Here are direct links to the UHD versions, which don't seem to come up through searches in Amazon's search box:

  • Season 1
  • Season 2

Hoping maybe Amazon figures this mess out and fixes it down the line. But for now, it looks like you need to use these links or do a search from an external search engine (e.g., google) to get these versions. Or at least, that seems to be the case for me, since I own streaming versions of both in the original (HD) format.

The short stories are all amazing, and a couple bucks each on Amazon. The Churn tell Amos's backstory. Wes Chatham read that book with a therapist to talk about what that sort of childhood would do to an adult to prepare to play Amos. The Butcher of Anderson Station reads like the attack on Thoth station, but way harsher. Much more details than the show portrayed. The Vital Abyss shows what happened to the surviving scientists from Thoth.

u/Calamity701 · 3 pointsr/TheExpanse

Looks like the Butcher is on Amazon, there are Kindle apps for most smartphones and for Windows. Most of them are short enough that reading it on a computer/phone should be okay.

You can read drive here.

Season 3 is only available in HD at the moment. I imagine the UHD stream will come out at the same time the whole season goes free on Prime.

This link will take you to the first season in UHD and this one to the second season. Add them to your watchlist and you'll find them there in the app afterwards.

Paperback, mass market paperback, and trade paperback (tall one).

Just a friendly reminder, Orbit is re-releasing the first 3 in hardcover later this year.

No idea if it's 4k or not. All it says is HD (and Prime)

HD version: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01NGWQPX3

Edit: Turns out you have to go digging for the 4k (Ultra HD) version of The Expanse, and it is only available from Prime. You can't buy it.

Ultra HD (4k) version: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B079PB9KFP

Edit 2: I don't have Prime. So, I can't check it. All I can say is that the HD version hasn't been corrected.
