Same for me but I do love it when they put in a little extra effort. I love the penguin classics hardback line that were cloth and simply buy beautifully decorated. Like these ones I have Iliad and Odyssey . I wish I could get them all they are beautiful

u/DINKYFIRE · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

Those are gorgeous!!! I have the Penguin Classics "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius, and it looks similar I think. http://amzn.to/2CtcbwI Makes me wish I had more money to spend on books... but I think buying pretty books is a two birds one stone situation- books to read, and beautiful house decor!

The Blu-ray version is still in stock in Amazon US, but the DVD's marked as "Temporarily Out of Stock." Probably a popular holiday gift item this year.

See more of the artist's Tolkien-inspired work here: http://angelarizza.com/tolkien

Edit: Judging by how obvious the film influence is in the piece above, I didn't think to mention that the artist has seen the movie(s). Either way, I'd be loath to entirely skip over Tolkien and attribute all of this caricature to Jackson. For some, he's visualized their Middle-earth near perfectly, whether he's carried out the tale to their liking or not.

While I understand that some are displeased with the movies (myself included), this sub is for "all things related to the Hobbit films … " and I think it's also understandable that lines blur when dealing with offshoot representations of the story — in fact, Rizza's work is featured inside a book on Tolkien adaptations. I shared this illustration because I enjoyed its classic style, which comes from a host of other influences ....

You could check out The Annotated Hobbit. Won't help you for LotR, but it will certainly make The Hobbit more interesting, not that it needs to be! ;)

u/saltlick35 · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

Hmm, I've heard mixed reviews. There's another duology with the same concept by Jacqueline Carey called The Sundering. The first book is called Banewreaker and it's excellent.

George R.R. Martin actually recommended it on his not-a-blog under 'what I'm reading.'

I posted in /r/fantasy a while back to see if anyone else had read it. The post is spoiler free as far as I can tell. Link to post

You should check it out!

Very cool. Here is a pretty good inexpensive study guide that I'm using with the a book club I assist with at our church, though may be too simple for freshmen kids.

OP looks to be an account made solely to direct folks to a Facebook page containing an Amazon affiliate link.

This is not a sale. This is pretty standard pricing for Amazon, and it may even actually be on sale at some point soon. Don’t just blindly support these people with upvotes.

If you're interested in numbers like that and other estimates check out Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth. Karen has scrapped together all the evidence provided by Tolkien to create an atlas that is as accurate as is possible.

Looks like they do include links to buy at the bottom of the article, to both amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

They must have read your comment :)

u/BugelMouse · 8 pointsr/TheHobbit

The copies that are shown on the picture are softcovers and a 75th anniversary edition. There are many many more! There are some really nice edition out there, like alan lee's illustrated edition or the folio society edition. I'd suggest you buy one of those for her, unless you are able to spend between 3652 and 35.000 dollars.

The first edition replica costs $26. If she really wants the first edition text, I'd suggest you to buy this.

I have that edition as aset with LOTR. I love it and those are the ones I usually read I keep this and this mostly as collectables.

u/orbit222 · 3 pointsr/TheHobbit

I believe this is right, though your link came up for me as mobile so here's the standard version

http://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-Unexpected-Journey-Extended-UltraViolet/dp/B00E8S2JZ4/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1407164473&sr=1-2&keywords=the+hobbit

It looks like the 3-disc version is the one OP wants. One disc for the movie, 2 discs for the Appendices, just like from the LOTR sets. Ultraviolet is a code for a digital version of the movie, so ignore that.

u/davidjricardo · 12 pointsr/TheHobbit

I hate it when pieces like this talk about a product, but never mention price or give a link to buy. For those interested, here is an amazon link, currently selling for $34.33 (prime eligible).

u/Billy_Fish · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

If you like Tolkien's artwork I'd look for a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator. It is a much more comprehensive volume of his paintings and drawings.

u/YJLTG · 1 pointr/TheHobbit

Sure thing. I first read it in the appendix of The Annotated Hobbit; http://www.amazon.com/Annotated-Hobbit-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0618134700 and I thought I'd share it here

u/travelinghobbit · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

Unnetted.

Good gravy... that is far far too much for a dvd. I would expect it to have behind the scenes books and dvds with it but it does not appear to. If you are going to pay that much, buy the three movie set. I still think that's too much though.

Perhaps you might want to trawl ebay or the bargain bins.

u/w3cdotorg · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

Yes there are EE Hobbit editions, in DVD or Blu-ray. The packaging is very similar, so be careful buying one. This one is the extended edition, 9-disc Blu-ray.

u/TheScotchDivinity · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

If you're just looking for the text, The Annotated Hobbit has the original text at the appropriate point in the story.

u/ebneter · 2 pointsr/TheHobbit

The 75th Anniversary Edition (link is to US Amazon) would probably be my first choice. It has both the color and b&w illustrations by Tolkien and his original dust jacket. (I should talk, though; I just counted and I currently own 17 different copies of The Hobbit, not counting some duplicates...)

u/poppinwheelies · 1 pointr/TheHobbit

Dumb question here: will they be releasing extended editions like they did with LOTR? Like this? http://www.amazon.com/The-Lord-Rings-Picture-Extended/dp/B000654ZK0

u/RagamuffinGunner13 · 5 pointsr/TheHobbit

Hmm, upon further research, it looks like the movie might be based on this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Mirkwood-Novel-About-JRR-Tolkien/dp/0615312543
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/blogs/thr-esq/jrr-tolkien-estate-threatens-lawsuit-101528

... which means now I'm significantly less excited about it. At first I thought it was going to be a real biopic about Tolkien, maybe including some filmed portions of LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion to show his imagination at work. But this sounds like misguided, revisionist crap.

The gold looks awful I much prefer the green one. Although it doesn't have the handwritten notes.
