Justin uses a Wal bass which has multi coil pickups and a filter based preamp.

Each pickup has 2 coils per string which outputs to their own wires that feed into the preamp board.

Wal bass pickup

The preamp uses 2 low pass filters, one for each pickup. They each have a resonance bump at the cutoff which makes your EQ look like this:

Resonant low pass filter

So as you're shaving off the highs with the filter, you're also boosting a target frequency.

It also has a narrow frequency that it boosts in parallel with the filters that accentuates pick attack.

The bass tone itself with the tone controls open is very mid heavy, almost like the low end is attenuated at some point in the circuit. I've heard people complain that it lacks low end, but that's desirable if you're going for punch that cuts.

A huge part of Justin's tone that goes overlooked is the type of pick you use and technique.
I've tried many types of picks made of different materials and thicknesses and I've found these to give the best tone. I think I've even read that Justin uses them.

Clayton Acetal Pick 1mm

A big part of getting that tone is where you pick on the string. Try experimenting picking starting right at the bridge and slowly moving up to picking at the bottom of the neck. You'll notice a huge change in tone. Another element is the angle at which you're picking. Justin has a lot of scraping along the edge of the pick going on when he's playing certain parts.
This will definitely get you closer no matter what bass/pedals/amp you're using.

Ignore Justin's amp settings, try developing your ears more. He boosts the bass/low end more than you would other basses because of the lack of it in a Wal. Most basses you're probably going to want to turn your lows down if you want that punch. I'd get your drummer to play the kick drum and turn the lows down, bring your low mids up to the point where you're liking the punch, adjust volume, then bring the lows up just to the point that you're not conflicting with the kick, and you're hearing it as one big punch element. This will depend on volume and the room you're playing in too. Oh and make sure the speaker is head level, raise it with milk crates or a chair if you need to and stand in front and away from it when you adjust your EQ. If you have a long speaker cord that allows you to put your head in a good spot where you can actually hear everything, it helps immensely. You definitely don't want to adjust the EQ with the speakers under you blowing passed your legs.

You're going to want some low-mids, this is what cuts and punches with the kick drum when you're playing with a band and what makes Tool that punching rhythmic wall of heaviness that it is. 'Presence' controls are going to get you closer to the scrapey/clicky tone he gets naturally from a Wal. A lot of amps have this built in these days. A sansamp bass DI can get you pretty close to that presence sound:

Sansamp Bass Driver DI

I used to use one but I started to realize I wasn't a huge fan of the way it colored the sound.
Oh and putting new strings on all the time is a huge part of the tone. That's something that really sucks since bass strings are so damn expensive. Something that you're just gonna have to live with until you can afford new strings every night.

Justin splits his signal to 2 amps. The signal goes through a TurboRat and Boss GEB-7 bass EQ before going into the 'dirty' amp.
I made this diagram a long time ago that still floats around:

Justin Rig

You can try to emulate that with a blend pedal through one amp but it's not gonna be the same thing. Get a blender with a phase/polarity flip switch. There are pedals that flip the phase internally, which wouldn't normally matter, but if you split and recombine your signal, and one of those pedals flipped your phase, you're now going to have a really thin tone that lost a lot of low end.

Xotic Xblender

Radial mix blender

Lastly the signal is split and goes into a Demeter bass preamp which goes to a PA. This basically just reinforces the higher end clarity. It's a pretty clean preamp so if your bass sounds great, the preamp will sound great. This also gets routed to the mixing board where there is probably some light processing happening. It's also a useful DI for recording but if that is your sole purpose and you're not going to be playing through a PA system, I'd probably buy a different piece of hardware.

The bass Whammy that Justin uses was discontinued but they're now producing a newer model that is just as good, if not better than the old one.

Digitech Bass Whammy

I own both and they do sound slightly different but once you're playing with a band, it's not that much of a difference that you would probably be able to pick it out or provide enough of an impact to completely transform a song.

Schism, he uses the Octave up shift setting with delay.

The Pot he uses Octave up shift with an envelope filter set very precisely after the whammy in the signal chain.

Good luck, strive to develop your ears!

Okay. A lot of really good recommendations here, but if you really want the best headphones under $50, you need to get these:

Koss Porta Pro On Ear Headphones with Case, Black / Silver https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00001P4ZH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_XsHxDbS2R6ZTF

Now hear me out. These are definitely the ugliest headphones out there, but it’s because they’ve been tried and true since ‘84 and Koss hasn’t redesigned them since. But they’re hands down the best quality sounding headphones under $50. Don’t believe me? Just read the reviews.

I have a pair and Fear Inoculum sounds great on them. I do have a higher end pair of sennheisers that sound way better, but I paid hundreds of dollars for those. If you’re on a budget, get these. Who cares how they look. Sit at home alone, close the door, put these on and enjoy.

By the way, I’ve used G35s and the Koss’ sound better.

some things are best to be clued into and let one discover for oneself. i've read a bunch of books & authors (still am reading) from tool's recommended reading material, like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell and Bob Frissell You Are a Spiritual Being Having a Human Experience. I even admit to owning a Drunvalo Melchizedek book on the Flower of Life which reads like a New Age Bullshit Hippy Dippy Textbook on advanced circle drawing with a compass. I like the idea on the Flower of Life but Melchizedek is waayy out there. Maynard talked about that briefly in his book. I finally got around to John Crowley's Aegypt recently, which is actually a series of 4 novels, very good and I highly recommend it. Crowley is such a great writer and there's times you can clearly see influence in mjk's lyrics. There's a book called The Secret History of the World that covers these subjects through human history, if you are curious it's a great resource.

I bought a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50xyears ago and still love them. I think they’re a great starting point for people who want to get into higher end headphones without breaking the bank (~$140) and want something you can just plug into your computer/phone headphone jack and get reasonably good sound.

I think the real sweet spot for price/performance starts at $400-$500. Audio quality is determined by the weakest link in your audio chain e.g. you can have a really nice pair of headphones that don’t end up sounding that great because your laptop or phone has a low quality DAC/headphone amp.

What I bought/recommend after spending dozens of hours doing research on /r/headphones and /r/audiophile is:

Schiit Modi 3 ($99) - This is the Digital Analog Converter or DAC. This converts digital music stored as 1s and 0s into an analog sound wave we can hear.

Schiit Magni 3 ($99) - This is a headphone amp that takes the analog sound wave from the DAC and amplifies it to your desired volume.

Sennheiser HD6xx ($220) - These are a stunningly good deal for headphones. They are a version of Sennheisers legendary HD600/HD650 series of studio monitors made in partnership with MassDrop for $120 less than a regular pair of HD650s on Amazon.

This is a really respectible setup for $420. All the components are very popular entry-level audiophile components and I’m sure there are thousands of people with this exact setup.

It’s important to note that this is not a portable setup at all and has to be plugged into a wall to work. This doesnt do much good if you do most of your listening on the go while traveling/commuting. I think you the Sony WH-1000MX3you said you tried are the best bang for your buck if you want wireless headphones to use with your phone on the go. I do not own these (yet) but plan to buy them next time I have a long flight, and I think they are currently the best noise-cancelling headphones on the market.

There are lots of good options out there, although I’d avoid the trendy brands like Bose and especially Beats.

I am going to be using this article plus my own personal experiences in the 7 years I have been collecting: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-turntables

Turntable: Audio-Technica ATLP120USB Direct Drive Professional USB Turntable Price $229.00 (On Sale at the time of this writing) it comes with a built in Pre-Amp so you are good to go. This is one I have been eyeballing myself.

Amplifier: Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver Price $149.95 (On sale at the time I am writing this). This is the one I personally use and I love it. It has multiple channels so you can allow for growth. For example I got a stereo cd player at the local thrift store I am trying to upgrade. I just need RCA Cables to hook it up which I do.

Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-T15-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B002RJLHB8/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Price $49.98 (Sale at the time I am writing this)

Wire from speakers to Amp: AmazonBasics 100ft 16-Gauge Audio Stereo Speaker Wire Cable - 100 Feet Price $13.49

Headphone Adapter (Trust me you'll need this if you want to listen to music via headphones) Adapter Price: $7.99

Subtotal: $450.41‬ plus taxes. I think you have wiggle room on the speakers, but I searched for high rated ones. If you need help setting up your Turntable and Stereo please feel free to reach out and I can help! :D

Opiate: $12.59
Lost my first copy I got at a record store in the 90's, re-bought this on Amazon.

Undertow: [$16.98](http://www.amazon.com/Undertow-Vinyl-Tool/dp/B000000992/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346420953&sr=8-1&keywords=tool+vinyl
&qid=1346420953&sr=8-4&keywords=tool+vinyl)
I bought in '95 at a local record shop in PA. Easily available on Amazon.

Ænima:$300 / $50
Original prints are $300+ on Ebay
The knockoff that I have sell cheaper on Ebay

Lateralus: $38.99
bought from ToolArmy, didn't have the cash to get the $150 signed one
at the time. Not too expensive on Ebay right now.

10,000 Days: $49.99
Never released by the band only knockoffs available on Ebay

Salival: $69.99
Also never officially released. I don't have one of these, but knockoffs available on Ebay. Too expensive for a knockoff. I'm happy just having my original VHS copy.

$238.54 gets you all the knockoffs. If you want the 4 originals it'll be $368.56

Hope that helps.

if you're on the floor, anywhere below row 10, you're gonna want to use protection (heh) - ive been using EarPeace for years at various venues and absolutely love them. They bring the music down to a reasonable decibel, without losing fidelity.

Plus, the added bonus of not getting tinnitus for days after is great. You'll also be able to hear what those around you are saying to you!

u/respectmyasshole · 0 pointsr/ToolBand

Are you listening on a great pair of headphones??

I use these, there are NO headphones that have comparable bass.... it literally sounds like Dannys kit is situated around my head.... like you have subwoofers on your ears. This album sounds amazing on these headphones... and not so amazing on my regular headphones.

Audio equipment is so important to properly hearing what a band is trying to do on a record... this album sounds soooo good.

I've used these for years and I've never left a concert with ringing ears. These lower the volume without muting all the sounds like traditional foam ear plugs. For a child you my want to go foam earplugs or over the ear ones.

Edit: just saw he was 19 so yeah I really recommend these for both of y’all. There clear discreet and still allow you to enjoy the music without the side affects

u/ChaseKendall1 · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Not sure if you’ve got an original or why it was so expensive but I’ve seen re-issue laturalus picture disc gatefolds for $30-$40 at local record stores and guitar centers. I found one for $28 on amazon.
You could get a record frame for $15 at a craft store like michaels or Joan’s.
Still really cool though!!!

I would recommend Audio Technica M50x. The best bang for the buck headphone imo and a very popular choice for many budget audiophiles including myself.

u/climbon321 · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

For anyone looking for a copy I'm pretty sure they're still printing it (along with Undertow and Lateralus, unlike Ænima). You can get it on Amazon for pretty cheap.

Great suggestion. I looked at few different styles of concert earplugs. Some of the more popular ones are the "flanged" style but I find those to be very uncomfortable. I ended up trying the Loop earplugs that come with 3 different sizes of smooth, silicone tips as well as the foam Comply tips. I can easily wear them for hours and they nicely reduce the overall volume without making everything sound muffled.

Check out this book if you want to better understand how Tool has been able to remain so well adjusted compared to their peers.

I read this recently after having been listening to the band for almost 15 years. The book gives great insight into the ways that Tool's members have always been different from their rock star peers.

u/niscate · 0 pointsr/ToolBand

Say what?! I'm located in Germany and just found the Amazon pre-order page for the physical copy. Now I have questions:

  1. Why does it come as 2 CDs if it only has 7 tracks?

  2. I sure as shit hope this isn't the final price. 100 fucking €? Yes, I've waited 13 long years for this album, but I'm not paying that kind of money for a CD. Just to be clear: 100 € is 112 $. In the US the CD is currently only 45 $.
u/sparks1988 · 1 pointr/ToolBand

My wife didn't like them at first. I started with the radio songs and they didn't really click with her until I took her to a TOOL show. Now she's been to the last 5 or 6 shows that I've been to. She likes them so much that she plays the rockabye lullabies to her 5th grade class (shes a teacher). My hope is she's secretly getting the next generation of tool fans hooked.

The sound is fantastic, they have an amazing engineer to dial it in. Do yourself a favor and invest in some decent earplugs. As others have stated, it's exceptionally loud. My chest was sore after the Denver show...those subwoofers are no joke.

I'd recommend either of these...they will attenuate the sound, but not muffle it:

Personally, I'm an Earpeace HD fan. I use the standard filter. They're comfortable and have good sound quality. In any case, wear your damn ear plugs.

u/Strychnidin · 10 pointsr/ToolBand

These are amazing. I used to be highly against earplugs before I discovered these after messing up hearing in my right ear. I never go without them now. The next best thing are custom fit earplugs that you can obtain from an audiologist, but I believe those are about 200$. Anyways, I find that shows sound better with the Etymotic's.

Sexual favors aside, I would want This. HOWEVER, most people are not rich, so I'm just gonna say get him a record player, and some of the vinyls, some beer/wine from Caduceus cellars/whatever he drinks, and a shirt (you can never have too many, but if he has some already, try to get one that looks moderately different from the others, such as a white one or one with an entirely different design). All in all, this gift should run in at about $100-150, depending on what you get specifically. Hope this helps

  1. I’ve seen them 24 times from Coast to Coast (in the US at least) and have never paid anywhere close to $200 for a ticket. Including a show at a small NY Opera house on the 10K Days mini-tour where I was greeted by a tux-wearing usher and had to check my coat at the door.

  2. Radiohead and Beyoncé (among others) - 2 of the biggest names in music whether we want to admit it or not - have both dropped brand new albums with NO prior warning, marketing or announcement of any kind. Tool announced the release date months in advance and even told fans in advance that new music was going to be played on the tour that just completed.

  3. Here is Lateralus Vinyl for under $30:

    Opiate Vinyl for $9:
    https://www.amazon.com/Opiate-Ep-Tool/dp/B00000098N

  4. The setlist from this most recent tour contained 11-13 songs depending on if it was a festival gig or not.

Of those 11-13 songs - TWO were brand new tracks, ONE was a brand new drum solo, and THREE others (Intolerance, Sweat, and Part of Me) have been extremely rare cuts over the last decade (or more).

So going into the most recent tour, chances were 100% that out of the 11-13 songs they were going to play, you were going to get no less than 3 new songs you’d never heard before (period) and almost 100% that you’d get a 4th song you’d at least never heard live before.

  5. Now get off your f’ing soapbox. We need the f’ing space to nail the next fool poster.
