I was in a similar situation over the summer, except that I actually use my tools to make money; a few options:

Option A: Harbor freight 301 Pc Tool Set:

https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/hand-tool-sets/301-pc-mechanics-tool-set-63464.html

With a coupon or on sale, it's $150-160. The sockets and ratchets are very good (I have a Snap On GF80 I am comparing them to; excellent ratchet, but it costs 5 times as much), and you get an incredible array of stuff for the price. Screwdrivers are OK, wrenches are usable, pliers suck.

I'm going to be picking one of these up to keep in the trunk of my car, but for a home DIY'er, grab some better pliers and wrenches and you're golden.

---------------------------------------

Option B: Pick & Mix:

Get a big box:

https://www.amazon.com/Waterloo-Specialty-Tool-Box-3-Drawers/dp/B008DP7VBK

And fill it with stuff you like.

I would still go to Harbor Freight for sockets, at least some - I use GearWrench impact sockets for a lot of stuff, but use HF for all my 1/4", 12-point 3/8", and shallow 1/2" - and ratchets. All 3 sizes with comfort grips would be about $55, they are 72-tooth and amazingly strong. I have their flex-heads and extendable ratchets, too.

Alternatively, Autozone has Duralast socket sets on sale right now, decent quality for a really good price.

I do not like Gearwrench 120xp ratchets; I tested one out at the store, and they have extremely firm backdrag, the result of having to push two springs down instead of one (how they get 120 positions out of 60 teeth).

I also like HF's recent line of screwdrivers:

https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/screwdrivers/22-pc-screwdriver-set-69420.html

On my wish list, Mayhew Cats Paw screwdrivers:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K1LXAK

I like that they have both hammer caps and bolsters

Wrenches pretty much have to be Gearwrench or better; I haven't found any good budget wrenches, and I've been looking! I just got a big GW set, 22 metric wrenches for $97:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003L1ZZVY

The full SAE/Metric set is $200, but goes on sale for ~$175 pretty often.

Pliers are another tool that really need to be high end; HF has a new line of Taiwan pliers that look pretty good, but they are more expensive than certain USA-made pliers that I won't name, and close to the price of Taiwan-made Irwin, which have much better handles.

These are on my Christmas list, Blue Point (Snap On China):

https://store.snapon.com/Pliers-and-Cutters-Blue-Point-174--5-pc-Pliers-and-Cutter-Set-Blue-Point--P645191.aspx

You can find them for ~$75-100 online; $15-20 per tool isn't bad, really.

--------------------------------------------------------

Option 4: Flag down a tool truck and open up your wallet!

Actually, a lot of the tool trucks carry more than one brand, and some have used tools they take in trade, so this isn't the worst idea in the world, if you have the cash up front to buy.

I was buying in pieces, though, as needed, so hunting down the tool truck 3 times a week wasn't an option even if I had been prepared to pay the premium.

I've been contemplating getting a cordless screwdriver for doing stuff around the house - things I don't need to go grab my drill from the shed to do, so I've been looking at a few on amazon. Most are stepping up a couple of levels price wise on the pictured drivers, you are looking at around $100 USD.

The only one I've used is an old Panasonic model, which I'm surprised, they are actually on amazon still. We have a couple of these at work, and they are great. They are nicad batteries, and while the batteries in the ones we have don't last too long these days, we have several batteries for them, and considering the drills and batteries are probably at least 15 years old, I really think they are top notch drivers.
https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-EY6220N-Cordless-Battery-Rechargeable/dp/B005AZ39LM

I'm surprised no one has linked to the milwaukee drives like these:

https://www.amazon.com/Milwaukee-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Screwdriver-Tool-Only/dp/B00VYNEEZO/

I haven't used them, but I'm sure they are top quality being milwaukee. I don't know too much about them though.

There are more options out there, like the dewalt gyroscopic driver - The tool looks good, but I'm not sure about the gyroscopic control, I personally would just prefer a trigger.

https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DCF680N2-Gyroscopic-Screwdriver-Battery/dp/B00DL7QDS2/

I was eyeing off the Hitachi / Metabo one on US amazon, as i have some amazon credit, but the chargers aren't universal chargers, they are 110 only :(, so i would need to find a local charger, which would add up cost wise pretty quickly

https://www.amazon.com/Metabo-HPT-DB3DL2-Screwdriver-Batteries/dp/B07L78Y72J/

Hopefully those options are useful for you. I'm interested to hear other peoples opinions of them.

u/leaveworldbetter to piggy back off of this, I recently got an impact driver from Milwaukee in their M12 lineup (note: that's not what I have but what I would recommend) and it's fantastic. I can definitely recommend that system to anyone, especially if it's for home use where you don't need a ton of power.

For screwdrivers, I got a set of Wera kraftform screwdrivers and I'm in love. I'll never buy an other screwdriver that isn't a Wera. I've used USA and China craftsman, Stanley, Pittsburgh, and even Klein. The Wera will always be my first choice.

For other tools I recommend looking at Tekton stuff. It's cheap and really good quality for the price. I'd say that it's better than Channel Lock with the stuff that I've used.

u/RJHermens · 6 pointsr/Tools

I own that Joker set. They look cool. They've got a feature list a mile long. But my Tekton wrenches are just... better. For what it's worth, the quality on the Joker's aren't even that good. Wera sent their manufacturing for the Joker's out to the Czech Republic, which is kinda like the China of Europe for cheap manufacturing.

If you need ratcheting wrenches, I'd recommend you get the Tekton WRN53170 set. 8-19mm with no skips, which is the same range as the wera plus the 9mm. And the set is only $80 for some strong wrenches with better quality control than the Joker's. Great warranty too. https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-WRN53170-Ratcheting-Combination-Wrench/dp/B01F511TS0

If ratcheting isn't that important to you, the WRN03393 set is also great. 8-22mm with no skips. Only $50 bucks. https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-Combination-Wrench-Roll-up-Storage/dp/B0199R9UQ4

Oh and always buy the Tekton sets with the pouches - if you like the plastic wrench organizers instead, you can always buy those separately for a few bucks, but those roll up pouches are gorgeous and strong and you can't buy them by themselves.

Anyway, sorry if I sound like a Tekton fanboy, but I own all three sets I've talked about here. I hardly use my Joker's because the Tekton sets are way better. TL:DR Jokers not worth it.

u/britishwonder · -1 pointsr/Tools

I know exactly what you're talking about. I have one that's not craftsman but some other no name brand. It has a clear handle and red top and bottom. It took me a long time to find a similar replacement online.

The trick to finding them is to search for Auto Loading Screwdrivers. This ones seems similar.
https://www.amazon.com/Craftsman-Auto-loading-Multi-bit-Screwdriver/dp/B00333Q27Q

To be honest though I don't think many manufacturers make them anymore and instead do just the multiple bits stored in the handle style.

For casual use I love the little clear handle autoloading driver. But over time I've become very accustomed to this guy as well. It's a standard, multiple bits in the handle kind, but with a really nice feeling ratcheting action. Its the same one that Snap-On rebrands.

>I haven't used them, but I'm sure they are top quality being milwaukee. I don't know too much about them though.

I have this M12 screwdriver, and its great - so much better than any of these tiny 4v or 7.2v drivers. Its strong, its got a clutch, its got a variable speed trigger, swappable battery and a wide range of battery capacities available, and its pretty small. Head and shoulders better than a 4v pocket driver.

u/pancaaakes · 1 pointr/Tools

It doesn’t use 1/4” bits, but it has onboard but storage... Megapro makes an excellent screwdriver that’s got a really great ratcheting action on it. The grip is also quite comfortable. Megapro is also the OEM of Channellock’s version which is very... Blue.

If you’re dead set on utilizing 1/4” bits, Rolgear makes a silent/smooth ratcheting driver that is a joy to use. My only gripe about it is that the handle is a bit small. There’s also a 6” version available that Reddit isn’t letting me link for some reason. Apart from the longer shaft, the grip is supposed to be more substantial. However, I can’t speak from experience as I don’t own it.

u/SgtPackets · 3 pointsr/Tools

I've have tried and used the Stanly, Bahco, Wera and Williams (It was actually a Snapon. But the Williams and Snapon are basically Identical.) And would like to suggest the Megapro Ratcheting Automotive driver as the best Ratcheting screwdriver I have ever owned.

Really secure bit holding, and the magnet is very strong. Your bits become magnetic and the screw your holding on to. So you can easily screw them in upside down or pointing the driver directly down. The shaft does wobble slightly, but all the drivers on your list do have slight driver wobble. Even the very expensive Snapon driver I tried had it. It's just part of the design.

https://www.amazon.com/Megapro-211R1C36RD-1-Inch-Ratcheting-Automotive/dp/B004VJY1FQ/?ie=UTF8&qid=1493671965&sr=8-1&keywords=megapro+automotive+ratcheting+screwdriver

The only one I would recommend from your list is the Williams. As it's very well made and is basically a Snapon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L04vNx82zzA

Hope this Helps :)

u/FrankyFe · 2 pointsr/Tools

MegaPro's "automotive" version of its ratcheting screwdriver uses the standard 1" insert bits: https://www.amazon.com/Megapro-211R1C36RD-1-Inch-Ratcheting-Automotive/dp/B004VJY1FQ

Seems to have gone up in price quite a bit since I bought mine, but its a great driver.

If its going in your car, then I don't think you need a ratcheting driver so just a bit driver should be a lot cheaper.

Edit: I also got the Rolgear insert bit driver and its great too. I use it for fine work where the zero back drag really helps.

u/derek2002 · 1 pointr/Tools

While I can't provide any input on the products you have listed, I picked up a bosch 12v pocket driver at a pawn shop a few years ago. I can't say enough good things about it. Even tho it was used I have never had a single problem out of it or the drill and impact it came with for that matter. Very strong with 2 different speeds. Batteries charge quick. Feels great in the hand. A fine tool worthy or consideration for sure. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003BEE12U?cache=7b30bc03ac566f4bc333a8334bd29bb2&pi=SX200_QL40&qid=1414192396&sr=8-2#ref=mp_s_a_1_2

u/MoogleMan3 · 3 pointsr/Tools

There's actually two; this one has a similar handle to yours (same size), but the shaft doesn't come out and it doesn't lock bits in place. I like this one; it does the job.

But my favorite is this one and the 4" shaft that came with yours (I have the regular green and black version of yours). I love that it keeps bits locked in place and is still magnetic, and if I don't need to use the longer shaft, the built in holder makes it kind of a stubby driver. The handle is a bit smaller since there's no bit storage, but f3eels more solid than the versions with bit storage in the handle.

Wera is worth every penny.

u/jcblackwell84 · 30 pointsr/Tools

Checkout Tekton, can get all their stuff on Amazon and I've been very pleased with the stuff I have from them. Best part is for the most part they don't skip sizes in their sets like other cheap stuff.

Check out, TEKTON Combination Wrench Set with Store and Go Keeper, Metric, 8 mm - 22 mm, 15-Piece | 18792 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OZJN3PQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YfpWAbSSBGA74

I have this set and a couple others. They have been awesome.

u/chronsbons · 3 pointsr/Tools

I am no pipe fitter, but i have used a fair number of tools as a bike mechanic.

Hex Keys/Allen Wrenches - Bondhus makes the best hex keys. period. If you have never used a ball end hex key, these things will blow your mind. (as a side note, these Bondhus keys would be your nice set, but you might want a shitty set as well that you are ok whacking with a hammer to release a stuck bolt) also i linked the metric/SAE combo pack because i can hardly believe that you wont be dealing with both. also also i linked the plated set because they will resist corrosion in the bottom of your toolbox better than the black oxide coated wrenches. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00132CGTW/ref=psdc_553414_t3_B000E7ZPUE

u/i_lack_imagination · 5 pointsr/Tools

That one was on my short list of screwdrivers that fit what I was looking for.

Ultimately I went with Megapro 211R1C36RD 1-Inch 13-In-1
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VJY1FQ

Mostly for the additional bit storage.

Reasons for choosing that is it looked like it had a smaller bit driver head so it would fit in tighter spots, and the extra bit storage was essential for me because I need phillips, flat, and torx security bits of a variety of sizes. I also have a small M12 impact that I like to use when I can and it helps when I have the bits that work with it, rather than some screwdrivers that come with the double ended bits. Instead of needing a separate bit storage case with me, I can keep them in my screwdriver which is already part of my kit wherever I go.

u/panzerkiller13 · 2 pointsr/Tools

Yes! The pouches actually look really awesome too, better than any other design I could find online so I figured I kinda had to pay a little extra and get them! Is it too late to return that set and get the other?

The combined set with pouches is item 90192: Amazon
I ended up getting this one the other day when ebay had a 15% off coupon: ebay set

The 15 piece SAE set is item WRN03293: SAE set on Amazon

The 15 piece Metric set is item WRN03393: Metric set on Amazon

Alternatively, if you cannot return that set you CAN order the pouches directly from Tekton! It's an exclusive from them, so I doubt you'll see them anywhere else for awhile: SAE Pouch, Metric Pouch

u/PhysicsDude55 · 1 pointr/Tools

I'm a big fan of using 3" long bits. the shorter 1" long bits just don't fit in a lot of electronics and such.

Depending on your budget the 3" Wiha "power bits" are excellent. There are a bunch of cheap chinese made kits too which work fine.
I really like using this small Wera bit holding handle for electronics work. It works really well with 3" bits.

I also like this Wera bit holding screwdriver which is a little bigger (size of an average screwdriver) for regular work.

Hope this helps!

u/Carson_Blocks · 2 pointsr/Tools

I recently had to rebuy my basic tool set as I moved a few thousand km and didn't bring everything. What mattered to me was a comprehensive set with no 'skips' (has every size, not skipping uncommon sizes), decent quality (sized accurately), good durability, and ratchets that aren't terrible. I ended up choosing the Tekton 3/8" and 1/4" sets from Amazon. No regrets. I augmented the set with the Gearwrench 120XP ratchets, which are nice but I'm glad I have the Tekton ones as well when I don't want the floppy flex head. I think Metric and SAE is pretty much mandatory. Even if you only work on Metric stuff, the odd SAE will appear.

I don't think much of modern Stanley socket sets at all. I'd go Harbor Freight first.

Edit: Here's what I've bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MDO6L90/

u/JamesOver9000 · 9 pointsr/Tools

I've got the snap on version, but from a YouTube video comparing the Williams (also a snap on brand), they're pretty close in quality and cheaper.
JH Williams WRS-1 Magnetic Ratcheting Screwdriver https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B002NI1LZK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.pbQzbTPG4YYS

Edit; if the shank is removable like the snap on ones, gearwrench makes extra accessories for it. I got a 1/4 drive socket extension and flex extension for mine.

That style isn't ideal for rolling up. Tekton does make a style that's for rolling up and its quite impressive.

Ideally you have a cover flap for on top that comes down to stop the wrenches from sliding out.

[This] (https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-WRN03393-Combination-Roll-up-Storage/dp/B0199R9UQ4) is what I'd recommend for a wrench roll.

FWIW - the "Wera Kraftform Plus 334/6 Screwdriver Set with Rack and Lasertip, 6-Pieces" are awesome. I bought some for my wife around black Friday. I paid $23.81 - they are currently $24.25 which is the second lowest price I have ever seen. They are amazing.

For 3/8 impact sockets go with the Sunex 3342 master set. It has both SAE and Metric and comes with both short and deep well for $68 and they're made from Cr-Mo instead of Cr-V like the Tekton ones are.

Edit: For wrenches check out the Tekton 18772 and 18792 sets, I own both of these sets and like them a lot and just now noticed that they're on sale right now.

u/Seitanist666 · 1 pointr/Tools

Harbor freight has a master set that has all the specialty bits. 1/4 bits are universal, there's a larger size used for impact drivers but they aren't common. My problem with the harbor freight torx is the metal used is very soft and they bend with very little effort. I highly recommend this set https://www.amazon.com/Sunex-9726-Mini-Ratchet-38-Piece/dp/B000XW4C8Q#immersive-view_1466790828525

I have the same set rebranded as Cornwell that I use daily and have never broken a bit. Matco also rebrands this set.

I own a Bosch PS21 that I use every day at my job as an apprentice electrician. It has adequate power for everything I have thrown at it. I use it mainly as a driver. It drills quarter inch pilot holes in electrical boxes with no problems.

With the addition of a 4ah battery it will stand up on a flat surface and ride in a J-hook on my tool belt. The battery casings are ABS instead of nylon but so far have survived the inevitable drops.

I am buying a unibit with a 1/4" hex shank soon, not sure if that little drill is up to the task of running it but I will give it a try.

i see this racheting driver: https://www.amazon.com/Wera-Kraftform-Bitholding-Ratcheting-Screwdriver/dp/B004VMWZV0/

but i don't see a kit that has the bits and the ratcheting driver. do they make t he above set but without the driver so that i can get the ratchet one separately?
