To piggy back on habits: The book "The power of Habit" is a great read. In general the idea can be summed up in this picture with a larger explanation. I'll do my best to explain.
Habits are created with THREE items.
The cue can be anything. An alarm going off. Stomach growling. Seeing a picture of a flower.
The routine is what you want to do. Getting up on time. Making a meal. Walking to the park.
The reward is THE most important aspect of a habit. If you have no reward, the habit WILL NOT stick. The reward could be petting your dog. Eating a healthy meal with your loved one. smelling a flower.
I'll use myself as an example. Almost every day without fail I would lose my keys right before I left the house to go to work, thus making me late for work. I decided to use hooks by the door to store my keys. Even with the hooks there I wasn't leaving the keys on them. Worse yet, I've left my keys in the door knob more times then I care to admit, and I live in a city. When I read the book I decided to change my habit to keep my mornings less stressful.
My cue is self explanatory. I walk through the front door. The routine is that I NEED to hang my keys up on the hook. If I don't hang my keys on the hook i am absolutely not allowed to pet my cats (He always greets me when I come in). Some days I forget to hang my keys, bend down to pet the cat, then realize "Wait I forgot something!". Other days I'll hang the keys with out thinking, but in either case I always pet my animals after I put the key on the hook.
The larger the routine, the harder it is to make it a habit, so break down the routine in to smaller habits. Create small changes and small rewards. Then when you get used to the idea of creating a habit go big.
I can't comment on what might be causing it, but as a chronic teeth grinder who has to wear a mouth guard, I ended up buying some "sensory" "chew" necklaces for use during the day. These look pretty non-descript, and holding it in my teeth keeps me from clenching down:

They come in a lot of styles and colors, and are pretty cheap. When I am working at home at my desk (alone) I use one of the ones below, which are a couple of inches across:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XS4L6NK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
I sometimes feel like a small child, but it keeps me from grinding and the various textures are fun.
That's interesting--I'm nursing right now, and got PPD or something similar, and the only thing I can take is Sertraline (generic Zoloft). I wasn't diagnosed with ADD until my early 20's, when college failures put me into a deep depression.
I just had my sertraline dosage upped, and it keeps me happier for sure--I'm not just sitting and staring into space because I have no energy. Now I am sitting and staring into space because I'm distracted!
Medication helps a LOT, for sure. I just get my Adderall from my primary care doc.
BUT-- it's really important to develop habits and use strategies that will also keep you on track. I really liked, and look forward to once again (bf'ing will be done in December) having a guaranteed block of time where I am focused. But stimulant medication wears off, so you don't want your life to totally fall apart at night!
Developing a habit of using lists, calendars, etc.--whatever works for you--will probably be one of the most important things you can do . Also try a book like this for ideas.
Best of luck to you!
I hope this isn't too big of a list to go through!
As I don't have a heck of a lot of medical support for this, I'm mostly guessing. I buy Now Solutions Natural Progesterone Liposomal Skin Cream (usually with lavender, I prefer it) because that's what my nearby Health Food Store stocks.

I use one pump each morning and apply it to the inside-to-back thigh on one leg or across the abdomen. (I don't like getting it too close to the breasts, and they keep saying fatty tissue and change your sites). I actually have a different site for each day of the week in a half-week rotation (it's a little less complicated than it sounds) to try to ground me in the week and keep me from forgetting where's the last place I used it.
The stuff I use is bioidentical progesterone, not "yam extract", which is supposed to encourage the production of progesterone. The stuff I use carries a slight risk of some reproductive issues, but there's a point at which you just have to take it.
I have no clue if that one pump a day is more, less, just right... I just know that it makes a HUGE difference in my life.
Let me give you a disclaimer, because I am really careful about these things. I would not recommend that you use it unless you have had your hormones tested and know that you have a (mild) progesterone deficiency.
I've had to go kind of 'off script' when trying to figure out what I need for my health. I know what I and my daughter have is "ADHD-PI and Dyslexia", but various members of my family have turned up with various levels of ADHD (PI, mixed, hyperactive), dyslexia, Aspergers, and/or autism. So what do I have, really? Why is the same genetic code "ADHD" in my daughter and "Autism" in my son? I don't know, to be honest. I don't think anybody else really knows either, so I don't particularly dislike or distrust the medical field. I just don't think they are really "there" yet with figuring out what to do with me.
Yup. I have a case for my iPhone six and have used the same one for years now:
iPhone 6/6s Wallet Case - Q Card Case for iPhone 6/6s (4.7") by CM4 - Ultra Slim Protective Phone Cover (Pacific Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MMTBHAO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_FgtExbT8J6QWJ
I also have Tiles on both my keys and my work Id. At least helps me find them in the morning/make sure they're in my bag at end of day.
I kinda wish they were trackers though that alert me when they're too far away.
Hooks. Hooks. Hooks. I have hooks by the front door for everything. I have a magnetic cloud key holder so I don't misplace my keys. Hooks for my bags and coats throughout the apartment. I have a tile in everything I own. Important things are brightly colored: orange wallet, lime chartruce water bottle ect. so I can find them quicker.
My place is a wreck right now though. My dog just brought in a dirt clump from outside and spread it alllll around the kitchen, there are clothes random places for no reason and I have pens everywhere but I can't find one. No idea where my wallet is. -sigh-
I just picked up this planner. I'm not new age and I'm not really into the law of attraction, but I liked that it has half hour increments and allows to set overall goals for each week.
Yes, do it. Even if it turns out you don't have ADHD, you'll at least have ruled that out and can focus on getting treated for whatever else you may have.
Also: talk to the department that runs student disability services at your school. It's slightly different everywhere, sometimes they're connected with the tutoring center, sometimes they're part of the general administrative services, it varies from school to school. They can help you out with getting testing and filing paperwork with the school so you can get accommodations. Especially for exams, since going by how you describe how your ADHD affects you, taking your exams in an alternative environment would probably do you a world of good.
Another thing, consider picking up a white noise machine from Amazon. The sound they make doesn't sound all that different from when the air conditioning is blowing through the vents, and they're effective at blocking out annoying noises all around you.
I thought Scattered was a great read. Particularly since it approaches the topic in a way that focuses more on relationships (with parents AND partners) and emotional impact, rather than genetics and testing.
There's no right way to organize something. If you implement a system and things get disorganized sometime after, it's a failed system, not a personal failure on your part.
May I suggest this book?
http://www.amazon.com/ADD-Friendly-Ways-Organize-Your-Life/dp/1583913580/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1449424766&sr=1-1&keywords=adhd+ways+to+organize+your+life
It was a huge help for me, and laid out in a way that it's easy to read and easy to reference. The gist of it is that you recognize what works for you and your family, and then adapt the systems to your needs.
[Edited for grammar. Of course!]
I was recommended this book in the main ADHD thread. is very enlightening: https://www.amazon.com/Attached-Science-Adult-Attachment-YouFind/dp/1585429139/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
My psychologist recommends this book https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Relief-Adult-ADHD-Complementary/dp/1626251649
Of course, I haven't it read it because, well.... lol
No excuse now!
(Except that price, gee wizz!)
This Travelon bag is my holy grail. Lots of little pockets for everything, big enough to carry my planner/journal with me, not so big I have to dig for everything, has a water bottle pocket.
Not OP but found it! http://amzn.com/B017WXIRH0
thank you for the suggesstion. after looking at that book, amazon recommended this one and the title alone made me cry.
