This one is simple. Avoid speculation and personal, unverifiable narratives. Focus exclusively on high-data-content cases that are well documented, ideally in peer-reviewed journals. And know your facts and cite your sources.

Start by informing them of the existence of GEIPAN, the French official UFO (or as they prefer, ONVI) project. GEIPAN is part of CNES, the French space program. Point out that GEIPAN works with established scientific institutions and has fairly rigorous procedures in place to investigate Unknowns. Also point out that they have a fairly high Class D rate of "Phénomènes Non Identifiés (après enquête)".

Also point out the ongoing existence of the Hessdalen Project, a scientific UFO study in Norway that dates back to 1983. The Hessdalen Project has provided pictures, videos and scientific literature. Here is a PDF of a peer-reviewed survey of the Hessdalen Project published in 2004.

Note: do not speculate as to the origin or nature of these phenomena. First of all, you have no idea what you're talking about. Second of all, such speculation rightly pisses of skeptics. And most importantly, these things are interesting because they defy explanation by competent scientists who have worked much harder on the problems than you have.

At some point, it is worth discussing the Journal of Scientific Exploration. Explain that mainstream Stanford physicist Peter Sturrock was interested in UFOs, but found that he was unable to publish anything in peer reviewed journals on the subject. He was even told that his submissions were not read because they dealt with UFOs. This is profoundly un-scientific, and seeing as Sturrock has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, it is bizarre to think he would be unable to revise a UFO paper to the point where it is printable.
Sturrock had to found his own journal, which isn't mainstream by a long shot, but which is still peer-reviewed. Now's a great time to bring up Sturrock's survey of the American Astronomical Society Concerning the UFO Problem. As I pointed out in the /r/UAP thread on this paper, there are some truly amazing bits of data. Not only do astronomers see UFOs, but the respondents who didn't report seeing UFOs were less likely to be professional night sky observers! This is a crucial conclusion that flies in the face of the conventional wisdom that UFOs are only seen by crackpots and hicks. Another classic from the Journal of Scientific Exploration is Jacques Vallee's Physical Analyses in Ten Cases of Unexplained Aerial Objects with Material Samples.

I can go on and on, but as you may be able to surmise, the UFO literature is truly massive. Take a gander at the /r/UAP sidebar for links to a functionally endless supply of primary source material.

If you feel thus inclined, recommend they read UFOs: A Scientific Debate, co-edited by the pothead hero of the skeptics, Carl Sagan. It contains papers by many of the major figures in early US UFO studies: J Allen Hynek, James McDonald, Donald Menzel and Sagan himself, with other, less famous contributors. But point out that the co-editor of the book Thornton Page participated in the classic 1953 CIA Robertson Panel. The Robertson Panel is famous for recommending a public education and "debunking" campaign aimed at making the US population less interested in UFOs. So any professional work he has done on the subject is suspect. Page admitted that the 1966 CBS documentary UFOs: Friend, Foe or Fantasy? (in which a young Sagan also appears) was specifically produced with the CIA's recommendations in mind.

If at this point you or your skeptic have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them. You can find me over at /r/UAP.

TL,DR

Do your research and stick to the facts. And don't you dare cite the bullshit express that is the Disclosure Project.

Please don't judge by this sub, it does no justice to the genuine mass of sightings and phenomenon that has occurred all over the world for all of recorded human history. Check out Leslie Kean and her work, she does a great job gathering some of the credible more credible testimonies all together and presenting them.

Also check out the disclosure project conference:
U.F.O DISCLOSURE PROJECT -FULL VERSION: http://youtu.be/7vyVe-6YdUk

And Fingerprint of the Gods by Graham Hancock, available in full for free here: http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/egipto/fingerprintgods/fingerprintgods.htm

Despite its sensationalist name it's actually quite factually based and makes no bold claims but rather only shows the reader where traditional historical accounts do not match with historical evidence and record.

Another great one by Hancock sort of but not entirely related to this sub is "Supernatural" which you can also easily find in full for free online. Again, stupid title but amazing book on the history of human beings use of psychedelics, the potential existence of other dimensions, and exploring how it relates to folklore spanning human history including modern ufos and abductions. It retains a fairly academic tone throughout which I appreciate. It never makes any assertions but rather presents the reader with the strange evidence to draw ones own conclusions. Granted the "evidence" is often circumstantial, hearsay, or anecdotal but it's still compelling.

One of my favorite chapters was his analysis of DNA, his problems with the current explanation of its evolution, and Walter Cricks psychoactive drug experience to discover it. I've never read a 400+ page book so fast in my life! (except for Harry potter)

I have my own theories and believe it to be a spiritual/trans dimensional as well as physical phenomenon and that the true identity of these beings can be found in the book of Genesis of the Bible/ Torah. No I'm not one of those crazy religious nuts I'm normal I promise! If you're ever interested in more on that aspect of it I've got lots of resources and references.

But yah, I agree this sub isn't strong in presenting the compelling evidence. But that can change! Everyone who complains about it sucking let's all just start posting all our favorite, quality stuff ;)

Leslie Kean published an excellent book called UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record and she and James Fox have an updated documentary based on this book called UFOs on the Record.

A lot of people disparage the alien encounter phenomenon but the late Dr. Mack's books on the subject are excellent, most recent: Passport to the Cosmos - it includes Dr. Mack's interviews with the students at Ariel school who had a mass encounter.

Hunt for the Skinwalker by Colm Kelleher and George Knapp is one of the most fascinating books - and definitely the freakiest - that I've ever read. It takes a clinical and journalistic approach to a completely bizarre collection of phenomena centered on the Skinwalker Ranch in Utah.

In the quote section, don't forget the astronaut from Apollo 17 who told Houston there was definitely something out there.

My advice on the website as a whole is to separate substantiated stories from unsubstantiated (like the Eisenhower meetings) - that's not a comment on whether or not these stories are legit, but I think it's more helpful for people unfamiliar with the phenomenon to have a resource of airtight reportage to look at.

Good site though - good luck!

u/toolsforconviviality · 3 pointsr/UFOs

Cognitive dissonance? Anyway, I often wonder if Peter Sturrock, Emeritus Professor Of Applied Physics at Stanford, is still interested in the UFO phenomenon. His academic credentials are impressive to say the least. He published a book a while back and also started the Journal of Scientific Exploration in an effort to persuade the scientific community to take the study of 'fringe science' seriously (sadly, it didn't really turn out that way). Back in 1997, and with financial support from Laurance Rockefeller, Sturrock and others reviewed purported physical evidence associated with UFO reports (paper here). Some excerpts:

"I [Peter Sturrock] expressed the opinion that this problem will be resolved only by extensive and open professional scientific investigation, and that an essential prerequisite of such research is that more
scientists acquire an interest in this topic...We hope and believe that [this report] will have the effect of placing the controversy as to the nature of unidentified flying objects in a proper scientific perspective. We also trust that it will stimulate scientific research along lines that may yield important new knowledge...

The panel concluded that further analysis of the evidence presented at the workshop is unlikely to elucidate the cause or causes of the reports. However, the panel considers that new data, scientifically acquired and analyzed (especially of well documented, recurrent events), could yield useful information. In this case, physical scientists would have an opportunity to contribute to the resolution of the UFO problem.

The UFO problem is not simple and should receive more attention, with an emphasis on physical evidence; regular contact between UFO investigators and the scientific community would be helpful, as also would institutional support; and the possibility of health risks associated with UFO events should not be ignored. The panel was greatly impressed by work reported from GEPANISEPRA, the French project originally GEPAN and now known as SEPRA, and there is no doubt that the best prospect for real advance in our understanding of the UFO problem would be the creation of similar projects in other countries..."

...which, is what Lesley Kean and others are calling for almost 15 years later.^1

Edit:^1 And what many have been calling for since the 50s.

http://theobjectreport.blogspot.com/2013/05/anatomy-of-black-triangle-sighting.html

Sightings of enormous black triangles go back to the late 1800's and early 1900's, so some of them may be military-related, but many of them are not. There have also been sightings by both law enforcement and military personnel of silent black triangles that are 1,200 feet long on a side which rules out the military even being able to hide something that enormous. The largest hangars on the planet are at Moffett Field near San Jose, CA and even they couldn't accommodate a craft of that size. So where are they keeping it? In orbit? If that's the case then it points to these being some type of spacecraft which in turn points to an exotic non-conventional propulsion system. This is pure logical deduction. Not to mention it makes zero logical sense to have something that big in the military inventory, the bigger you are the easier of a target you are, especially an aircraft. Some eyewitnesses have seen these craft 'cloak' visually which also points to extremely advanced technology that is decades ahead of anything else in the military inventory.

I read a book about Skinwalker Ranch called, I think Hunt for the Skinwalker or something like that. They sighted things like this all the time in a certain part of Utah about ten years ago or so and before that. There was so much strange stuff happening at the ranch that the family who just bought it got freaked out and sold the property to a team of scientific researchers who set up a bunch of equipment to catch sightings and record data. The book is written by that team. It's pretty amazing what they witnessed and captured, and the guy who wrote the book came away basically with the theory that there was a portal to another dimension that was causing all sorts of strange beings and discs and orbs to be escaping and moving about. It was clear also that these phenemena were highly intelligent and sophisticated. On two occasions different witnesses also saw an actual "tunnel" open up in front of their eyes and in one case some kind of beast was reported to have literally climbed out of said tunnel and go into the woods.

So... just read the book. I'll grab the link. http://www.amazon.com/Hunt-Skinwalker-Science-Confronts-Unexplained/dp/1416505210/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1427146886&sr=8-3&keywords=skinwalker+ranch

I was really interested in it in my teens (mid 70s) I used to buy the UFO magazines and watch the rare UFO show on television. Back then there was no way to do research on the inet anything you wanted to look up had to be at the library. I spent a lot of time there.

In the last 15 years I have had the opportunity to spend a little more money on books like The UFO Encyclopedia and more time on the inet and have found a lot of what I thought I knew to be baloney. Cases that I thought were unsolvable were misidentification or just outright lies by some that just wanted to make a quick buck.

Now I just read the reports for a laugh, I guess if I were to have the same thrill as a kid I would need someone to come up with an actual piece of a craft to convince me to believe.

I couldn't recommend The UFO Encyclopedia more. Its the best book in the field.

u/paulobecker · 5 pointsr/UFOs

The best thing in order not to doubt your "beliefs" is not to have any. Doubt is good, it makes you question things and become uncomfortable and do more research. Personally I don't "believe" in UFOs, but I don't disbelieve them either. I'm just always looking for good evidence.

If your parents are journalists, ask them about Leslie Kean. She's a journalist that once was very skeptical about UFOs, but as she got to researching and talking to people who had first hand experiences she started to think maybe there's something about it. I definitely recommend her book.

u/johninbigd · 2 pointsr/UFOs

You speak as if you assume I don't believe in UFO phenomenon, well its been 60 years since Roswell and yet no exposure so either the coverup is very well executed or these kinds of sightings are basically filing the perpetual need for people to create a narrative thats alluring to them.

I read Leslie Keans book, to be honest I'm surprised she attached her name to this flimsy "evidence" I preferred Mirage Men in order to gain a fresh perspective

u/Synchronauto · 6 pointsr/UFOs

Passport to Magonia by Jacques Vallee is an entire book full of early reports of UFOs, many of which come from America. It's an absolutely fascinating read, and I highly recommend getting it.

One sticks out, details escape me, but in the space of a week about 150 years ago where an Airship, something a bit like a blimp is seen flying over various cities in the US with a crew that land or fly low near various towns and are visible, appearing to be period dressed white people, but with funny accents. Something like that.

Oh, just saw your wiki link. Maybe it's the same story, but with lots of details recounted.

u/Fart_Connoisseur · 1 pointr/UFOs

If you mean "real" UAP's as in extraterrestrial I don't really know. I never had any sightings or experiences myself so i couldn't in good conscience attribute anything iv'e seen online as being proven extraterrestrial however strange or bizarre it may be. The phenomenon intrigues me though.

I'm reading Richard Dolan's book UFOs and the National Security State: Chronology of a Coverup, 1941-1973. The first of I think three books(?) detailing the chronology of the UFO-phenomenon and the response to it by the United States growing intelligence apparatus. It makes a very solid case that the American government (and others) is/was very interested in UFO's while maintaining the public notion they weren't. It's fascinating!

If you just want to see some strange footage of UAP's i'd watch Australien skies on Netflix. The docu follows Damien Nott who claims to have experienced and filmed sightings since he was a child. He is very "matter of fact" about it and shows many of his captured sightings with both UAP's and black helicopters. Besides the sometimes cheesy editing effects this docu pretty much just lays it out there and presents Damien and his footage as is. I don't know what to make of it, Damien seems sincere and the footage is sometimes as strange as the one we where talking about before. Maybe you see something you recognize yourself?

u/aohus · 0 pointsr/UFOs

Could be a hollowed out asteroid like Carl Sagan was saying with Phobos, when he claimed it was an artificial satellite. Thats before he got famous though. It was his first book.

http://www.amazon.com/Intelligent-Life-Universe-I-Shklovskii/dp/189280302X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323133726&sr=8-1

Then he realized that he can't make those claims in public, and later on in life, essentially denigrated anything with UFOs/ET.

Personally, my theory is that UFOs aren't physical craft. They're intelligent entities unto itself. In essence, the UFO itself is alive, a living, intelligent entity.

u/Timeghost182 · 11 pointsr/UFOs

There's a section in Leslie Keans UFOs on the Hudson Valley sightings.

Funnily enough I had just finished hearing a friend of a friend tell me about the time he saw a neighbourhood sized boomerang shaped craft over Queens, NY, when after the call I turned to the next page of the book and the Hudson Valley sightings were discussed. I promptly snapped a pic of the witness drawings of the craft that are included, and sent it over... the reply was "That's what he saw!"

Coincidence? Perhaps...

Start with Vallee, Jacobs, Hynek, Hopkins (for abductions) and the Bowen books are good if you can find them. Keel's books because they are just a lot of fun to read. That's a great suggestion though. I didn't realize you could get one for so cheap! Any idea how good these are at viewing aerial phenomena? Most IR footage of UFOs I've seen tend to be from several hundred/thousand dollar cameras...
u/dopp3lganger · 10 pointsr/UFOs

I've read Kean's book but I also I picked up Richard Dolan's UFOs and the National Security State: Chronology of a Coverup, 1941-1973 per your suggestion a few months ago. I have to say, Dolan's book is definitely more in depth and connects the dots much more thoroughly, but it's aim is entirely different.

Kean's book is great, no doubt, but it's more of a UFOs for beginners, IMO. In a way, I think it's exactly the type of material many people needed to read in order to give the subject some credence.

u/3spoop56 · 11 pointsr/UFOs

The one that got me into UFOs was the Chicago airport incident: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_O%27Hare_International_Airport_UFO_sighting Sadly there are no photos, but this is striking to me because the skeptical explanation really does not hold water IMO - nobody is going to mistake a cloud for a solid metal object.

In terms of sheer documentation and lack of alternate explanation though I think the Tehran incident is best. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_Tehran_UFO_incident The best debunking I could find of it is here, but I don't find it very compelling: https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4315

For iPad, the best alternative for Stellarium is RedShift. Also, for tracking satellites in real time, the NASA's iPad app is free. Lastly, get flightradar24 for tracking air traffic in real time, which is also free, but there's a pro version for $2.99.

With all these apps you can check if what you are seeing / filming is a celestial body, a satellite or an aircraft.

And above all, as mentioned earlier, try to get and read the Harley Rutledge's book on a library near you (is no longer available from book shops.) He mentions in detail what equipment and techniques he used for going UFO hunting during the wave of Piedmont, MO in the early 70s.

A great write-up.

Triangle UFOs could be airships, (NOSS) satellites, military jets (Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk), other prosaic things, etc.

Or they could be the anomalous cases. UFOs that seem to defy physics in many cases.

The UFO that you witnessed might be one of the anomalous cases or something mundane.

If interested, check out David Marler's work. He's a trustworthy, skeptical UFOlogist who mostly deals with triangular UFOs:

Anyway, keep an open mind, but be skeptical. Ex: You said it was storming outside? Maybe it was some instrument used by meteorologist stormchasers.

That may be very unlikely, but you catch my drift? Coincidences abound in life....

You mean imaginary like demons, fairies and dragons? How do you mean, "manifest"?

There is a whole section of UFO studies that tries to understand UFOs as a psychological phenomena, starting with Carl Jung's Flying Saucers book.

Indeed, they are typically called "black triangles" in the community, and there is at least one book written about just this type of UFO:

https://www.amazon.com/Triangular-UFOs-Mr-David-Marler/dp/1490465812

The behavior you describe is extremely consistent with other black triangle sightings, though the noise you hear associated with the sighting isn't necessarily common. It might be helpful to check with your local MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) state chapter to see if anyone else reported anything similar that night.

But the evidence she presents in that book will leave you convinced that something is going on.

u/occultistscum · 2 pointsr/UFOs

Not saying that ET's can't exist, but there is no evidence aliens are coming on a nuts and bolts spacecraft visiting our planet. It's possible that aliens exist, but there is no physical evidence of extra-terrestrial spacecraft with aliens inside visiting our planet.

  • Research is starting to show that we actually live in a multiverse. Eminent scientist Michio Kaku elaborates as well.

  • The research into spirits, and UFOs, has many UFOlogists stating that UFOs are actually 'inter-dimensional' entities that phase in and out of our planet, and that they are indigenous to this planet. In essence, the IDH theory (inter-dimensional hypothesis) proposes that these cosmic entities have been around on planet Earth for a very long, long time.

  • Ancient man has been aware of these cosmic entities. If one looks at ancient cave drawings on a global scale, many of these drawings show 'hybrid' entities. One can be in an altered state of consciousness and see these 'hybrid' entities. This is similar to the reptilian phenomenon. What the victim is seeing is actually real, but in their minds. Just because it is in their mind's does not mean that these entities are mere hallucinations. The ingestion of certain synthetic chemicals or natural entheogens (mushrooms, for instance) allows the user to meet entities. Ancient man was highly involved with spirit worship. Today this topic is considered 'fringe' or 'conspiracy.'

Come on now, there have been thousands of people, highly credible people that have witnessed these ships. Reports DON'T mean nothing, they are a very important part of documentation. For instance, the Japanese pilot and his crew back in 1988 (I think the year is right) that saw these two huge ships following him? The guy risked his whole career to report this incident. There have been presidents, pilots, astronaughts hell, there was a case back in the 90s where five police from neighboring counties saw the same ship one night, one even got pictures of it.

Richard M. Dolan: UFOs and the National Security State.

The sheer amount of documented information in this book is amazing. It's a great history of the UFO/government involvement topic. There's a second volume too.

If you are curious about the abduction phenomenon, check out Dr. John Mack's book 'Abduction'. Mack was a professor at Harvard and specialized in abnormal and child psychology for 40 years before beginning his studies of abductees. They actually tried to run him out of there for it, too. Even if you don't believe this is about aliens this book will blow your mind. He destroys the myth that these are mostly attention-seeking or fantasy-prone people and details how most people who come forward with their experiences actually instead lose their jobs, their spouses and their sanity over it. He also details how widespread it is in the world, with different and even very isolated cultures experiencing and describing the same beings, instruments and procedures.

C.D.B. Bryan's Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: The Lectures at M.I.T. is another good one about abduction. It was written by a Yale-educated journalist and writer who didn't initially believe, but left pretty freaked out after interviewing people there. This book freaked me out the most. Again, when you start to look closely at the specific people who claim this stuff you start to realize that the majority of them are dead-serious and scared shitless about their experiences, not looking for attention.
