Thank you! Yes I have heard only good things about that book.
Does it matter that it is C and not C++? Because I have been told Accelerated C++ is also a very good book and things are seen at a faster pace. But again, if you believe the K&R is a better approach I will by all means look into that one. I mentioned Accelerated C++ because of the time constraint I have.

I just got this: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V3-572G-587W-15-6-Inch-Platinum/dp/B00K81O3PY

Decent processor, decent graphics card. Make sure you click the "# new from $$$" under the price because it's only like $600 through amazon instead of the third party vendor.

Not really sure if that's good for your program but it seems to have some of the requirements other people are mentioning without being too out of your price range.

For what it's worth, too, I love it already,

It's the introductory course. As others have said, you'll learn hiragana and katakana within the first two weeks. You'll also cover through Chapter 10 in this textbook.

It will gradually get harder as you progress through 203 and 204, but I really enjoyed it. The instructors are great.

I took it. The book you will use for first semester is this and I didn't spend too much time on it.

I had no prior knowledge and got an A on all but 2 exams throughout my two semesters.

Homework everyday and once you learn a bit they tack on a journal/essay type assignment once a week. The homework can take 5mins-30mins+ (depends on how well you understand the sentence structures and words). The journal can fit that 5-30 range or take longer as you have to write almost 300 characters and you need to make a comprehensive entry or get docked hard on points.

When it comes to studying the new vocab every week, I spent 3 hours every Sunday and I knew all the words (Pinyin, definition, and how to write the character) for several weeks without review. Other students would study them everyday and still have trouble. So if your memory is good, you won't spend too much time. Also keep in mind that you see the words in your book so you're constantly getting them in your face to remember.

Besides the typical learning in class, Monday and Tuesday both have a vocab quiz. Wednesday has a translation quiz (English to Chinese. One sentence) and Friday has a test on everything you learned that week.

If you have anymore questions just ask. I personally loved the class and I'll be going for the full four years because of it.

I got a nice, queen size memory foam mattress for 200 dollars off Amazon. I love it
It was over a year ago, im pretty sure this one is it. It's about 30 dollars more than what i paid though http://www.amazon.com/Signature-Sleep-8-Inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B005A4ON90/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1375058548&sr=8-8&keywords=memory+foam+mattress+queen

Arbor Longboards are so nice. They're a little pricey, but totally worth it IMO. As far as style, pretty much all up to you. Longer ones are a bit easier to stay stabilized on but are more of a hassle to haul around. I'd recommend something like this. And yeah, you're gonna bust your shit a lot if you've never ride before so prepare https://www.amazon.com/Arbor-Premium-Complete-Skateboard-Black/dp/B01COADK0U/ref=sr_1_10?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1496799109&sr=1-10&keywords=arbor+longboard

Understanding the Linux Kernel is the book that they recommend you read throughout the course, and it actually seemed to be really helpful to the people who read it. You could brush up on C and basic data structures since you'll be coding a lot in C; you also use x86 but you'll learn that during the class.

Besides that there's not much you could do since most of the material, if not all of it, will probably be new to you unless you've learned about system software/operating systems before. However, if you want a head start then you could start reading Understanding the Linux Kernel. Good luck, and may the Linux gods be on your side during MP3.

Figuring out what career to gear up for while failing college felt to me like fixing an airplane in mid-flight.

OPTION I: Land the plane and fix it.

Two majors in, I dropped out and worked for six years, then the light bulb came on, and I got a BSCS from the CoE here. So that's the option that worked for me.

OPTION II: Fix the plane - hey, lots of altitude left!

If you try this, you need a much sharper image of who you are, what brings out the best in you, what you would do if had no financial constraints but wanted to be productive, what standard of living you want, where you want to live, and so forth. Get a self-discovery-oriented career guide like What Color Is Your Parachute and start noticing the good and bad patterns in your life and what they imply about a career that you could build without dreading Mondays.

OPTION III: Whee, we're gliding!

Included for completeness and popularity.

I use a good u lock to secure the frame and rear wheel, and this cheap one to secure the front wheel to the frame: http://www.amazon.com/Como-Plastic-Security-Motorcycle-Bicycle/dp/B009EO37VM/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1381953707&sr=8-12&keywords=u+lock

Also yeah bringing it inside would be the safest.

Behold, the greatest textbook I read in college. David Klein's Organic Chemistry was the single most important factor in me getting an A+ in organic chem 1 and 2.

I took the Chem 236 equivalent at my community college where this textbook was recommended. When I took 436 at UIUC, they recommend the Loudon textbook. It's shit. Don't read it. Klein literally holds your hand and walks you through each chapter with plenty of problem sets that force you to master one topic before you move onto the next one. The organization, the prose, the explanations, the problems sets, the figures...they're all just so beautiful. The reviews on this book are phenomenal. Compare the reviews to Loudon and you'll see how much of a different there is.

Buy this textbook with the accompanying solutions book (absolutely necessary no questions asked), and read through every page and do at least 80% of the questions. Draw out those mechanisms until your hand is bleeding. You'll be better off than most of your classmates. I guarantee it.

I shuffle from these collections:

The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World...Ever!

The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Ever, Volume II

The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the Universe

But usually I just tune in to WILL-FM, it saves me the effort of shuffling, choosing, selecting ... which in itself can be distracting when trying to work or study.

I recommend this book

It's been very helpful for me.

The author ran a great blog over the years with related material, here's the archives. I would search in the category tags for items relevant to you.

Nice. Update of the classic. Check out your band rocking it outdoors in first episode of The Grand Tour. It's the lead ~4 minutes of an Amazon Prime video. Hope you have access.

I got something like this before I got cable for a really good price. It brought in about 3 channels at a pretty good signal. It would cut out every once in a while, but worked otherwise. The most you could probably pick up with any indoor antenna is 5-10 channels, honestly.

> Dear Tofu Roshi: When I meditate, I seem to exhale more completely than I inhale, and consequently, by the end of the meditation period, I feel quite deflated. What do you think I should do?
> — Prudence Birdwhistle
>
> Dear Prudence: Proper breathing technique is widely misunderstood. You are not alone in having trouble with it. From your letter it sounds as though you may be making a common mistake: breathing out more times than you are breathing in. This is why we recommend counting breaths. Only by counting can you be completely sure you are exhaling and inhaling the same number of times. One of my students uses golf counters for this. With her left hand she enumerates inhalations, while with her right she takes account of exhalations. At the end of the period, she checks to make sure the numbers on the two counters are the same. If there is any discrepancy, she takes an extra moment to even things up, adding the indicated number of exhalations or inhalations. But it is best to alternate, whenever possible. Breathe in once, breathe out once, and then go all the way back to the beginning of the cycle and repeat. This is a basic principle of Zen.

Here's the book for Chem 101...I would recommend renting it because you won't need it the next semester for Chem 102 and you'll use it often for practice problems so the paper copy is nice to have. . (I am one of the instructors for the class.)
