"The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof."

Illusions, my absolute favorite book.

Lets pretend for a moment that this is the wire we are going to use (I know this is ridiculous for more than several reasons). So we have wire at $0.90/ft. We need.... ~3 miles so 5280ft x 3 x 0.90 = $14,256 in added cable cost (again these numbers like OPs are totally inaccurate)

I found an ad for 10 acres in California for $399,999 So 1 acre is assumed to be $39,999.90. (I have no Idea how reasonable this is I have only ever bought a lot in a small town)

So it turns out that land costs more than the additional cabling(of laughably made up price). So the next question is: can you fit more balloons on a plot of land than stationary units? Answer, probably. Airspace ownership is an unknown territory for me but it seems like you can fit as many balloons on your land as you can fit base stations.

So they are more productive and factoring in the cost of land may actually be more financially reasonable than you have indicated.

This all ignored maintenance costs. Why? Because average maintenance costs are UNKNOWN for the proposed system. Likely they will be more but how much more is not known.

I'm not saying you are wrong I tend to agree that short term it will be financially unrealistic but the problems this is designed to solve are beyond cost vs benefit. Those same problems may make the cost vs benefit favorable in the not so distant future.

If you like the idea of a final farewell or 'living funeral' you should read Tuesdays With Morrie it's a true story of an amazing man who celebrated his life like this with his closest friends

u/clocks212 · 2 pointsr/UpliftingNews

the book describes it as "when you go to a wedding, you already know whats going to happen, but there is value in going through the process". So it was mentioned that the aliens perhaps lack free will, but that it doesn't take away from the experience of actually experiencing those things. Her ability to change course or not wasn't specifically addressed i think. The short story is only like 20 pages, you should read it. The other stories in the book are equally as interesting, read them all!

It's in the first few pages of his book, 'Wall and Piece'. You can see part of the paragraph in the preview.

As well as 'Banksy's Bristol: Home Sweet Home' by Steve Wright.

Here in Gaza for example you can see the children are clearly stenciled, a hand painted white base with a black stencil over the top While the edges of the 'cracks' have running paint as if it was done too close by hand.

This is basically the story of the children's book Those Shoes, but in real life! How wonderful. I love reading that story to my first graders.

One way to reduce plastic isn't just to change the package, but encourage people to bring reusable containers.

Major stores like Winco sell bulk foods, but I am not sure if they allow you to bring your own container instead of using plastic bags.

The allergen hazard is bunk. You use a steel straw, plated with gold. Super cheap, hypoallergenic, reusable. Done.

People's complaints about plastic straws are ridiculous, though. Landfills work super well in countries that actually use them.

Hey guys, might be a little bit late here but my dad just recently published his book on his experience with melanoma. Titled "It Started With a Freckle, the book goes through his journey from diagnosis through treatment and onward. There's a lot of information on melanoma, what we know, treatment, doctors' thoughts, etc etc - I know this is kind of advertisement-y but everyone who's read it (including other melanoma patients and doctors) has enjoyed what he had to say and the humor and humanity with which he presents his story, so definitely check it out if you're able :)

This was initiated by Gregory Boyle, a priest who started Homeboy Industries. He's a pudgy white dude who has become a loving and safe parent to tens of thousands of gang members. He wrote a phenomenal book called Tattoos on the Heart.

so messed up. reminds me of some book i read about a future world where everyone can be as perfect as they want due to surgery and genetic manipulation and the prostitutes could make a lot of money if they were willing to accept living with an interesting deformity :O

[edit] - https://www.amazon.com/Pharaoh-Contract-Emancipator-Book-ebook/dp/B00J84KN92 | the prostitute thing was only a small part of the book. i don't want you to get 30 pages into it and be all, "god dammit i was promised deformed prostitutes!"

So, as I understand, she basically got some thermal-to-electrical energy converter like this http://www.amazon.com/Velleman-6A-PELTIER-THERMO-ELECTRIC-MODULE/dp/B000TAAJ3E
, strapped it to flashlight and won 25K$?

How this is different from creating program that makes two high level api calls with some glue code? I don't understand what is worth 25k$ here.

If you ever get a chance, read Yvon Chouinard's (founder of Patagonia) book Let My People Go Surfing. It will give you a good insight as to how he thinks and how the company Patagonia is run.

For example, they were one of the first, if not the first company to make a daycare center within the headquarters.

The reason for the title of the book was, he couldn't expect his employees to be thinking about working on a day that had nice waves, so he created flex time and let his employees take time off to go do the things they loved.

Agree. It was a terrifying time, and is still I presume for people that share space with these tigers. There's a wonderful documentary out there about how people have adapted to living with tigers in the mangroves (sunderbans)

For folks that enjoy reading, there are fantastic books about man-eating tigers. Man-eaters of Kumaon. See related items for others at this link

I tried going to a 12 step program but the higher power idea didn't feel comfortable to me. Also the way that a lot of different people would talk from different places in the room. I'm Autistic and group conversation can be stressful to me.

The Autism diagnosis was immensely helpful for me in getting sober. I found an Autism-positive psychologist and did a modified form of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT).

I think DBT is pretty fantastic for anyone who feels a lot of pain or does things that end up hurting themselves. I really like the book Seeking Safety by Dr. Najavits. Here is a link to the book. They also have meetings in a lot of cities so if you google "seeking safety + your location" you may find a group also.

I read a book recently about this. There's actually a decent amount of research on this state of mind but it has nothing to do with athletics. You've likely experienced the zone, or flow state while doing mundane things like having a fantastic conversation or pushing hard to finish before a deadline.

The book was "the rise of superman" and the author has a website as well.

Nurse Aide here, the facility I worked at had this amazing Aloe handsanitizer, I could practically bathe in the stuff and my hands'd feel fine. Then they switched to generic Purell since the good stuff was more expensive, hence my hands started looking like /u/rebelmusik 's.

Basically hospitals etc. need to recognize that spending a little more in the sanitizer department for those of us who use it a million times can have wonderful dividends down the line.

EDIT: It's McKesson brand sanitizer if anyone wants to know

Sure!

5 tablespoons oil

1-2 Onions, minced

8 Cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon coriander

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 finely chopped tomato

2 20 ounce cans of chickpeas

2 teaspoons cumin seeds

2 teaspoons amchoor or anardana powder

1 teaspoon garam masala

1 teaspoon paprika

salt

lemon juice

1 hot chili

2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

Heat oil in a large pan or wide pot. When hot, add minced onion and garlic. Fry until translucent or medium-brown. Turn heat to medium-low and add coriander, cumin, cayenne, and turmeric; stir, then add tomatoes. Stir until well-mixed, and fry for a few minutes. Add chickpeas, and 1 cup water, stir, then add amchoor/anardana, paprika, garam masala, salt, and lemon juice. Stir it all up, cover, and turn the heat to low so it can simmer for 10-15 minutes. Add minced chili pepper and ginger, and cook for another minute or two, and voila!

Adapted from Madhur Jaffrey's recipe in World-of-the-East vegetarian cooking book.

Enjoy!

A great friend of mine ran coast to coast in 100 days last year to raise money and awareness for wounded veterans. He wrote a book about his journey, and here's a picture of him giving a copy to Gary Sinise at the GE Veterans Summit last week.
