If your are going to be using the VPN from home, then just use a reputable service like Private Internet Access (PIA) and pay however you normally would for a service - credit card, PayPal, etc..

You have any number of options on how to use the VPN service. Three possible options from easy to difficult may be...

Easy - use VPN service client software

The better VPN services like PIA have client software that you can download and install on PCs and mobile devices. You run the client when you want to connect to the VPN. This is easiest, but offers the least anonymity. You will need to be particularly careful to avoid IP Leaks.

Moderately difficult - use a virtual machine on your PC

If you:

  1. have a consumer-grade firewall/router like a NETGEAR Nighthawk, or you use an ISP-provided router, at home, and
  2. you have a reasonably good desktop/laptop PC with sufficient RAM (e.g. 8 GB to 16 GB)

then you may be able to run a Type 2 hypervisor (virtualization software) on it such as VirtualBox or VMware Workstation (on Windows) or VMware Fusion (on a Mac). The hypervisor can be used to run a virtual machine (VM), a version of Linux for example, that you will use for your VPN client. The VM will aquire its own IP address on your network or on a public hot spot. You will have the most privacy if you:

  3. use your host PC only for activity tied specifically to your identity (social networking, banking, shopping, etc),
  4. use the guest VM running the VPN client only for activity that you wish to remain private, and
  5. optionally (for more privacy and better anonymity) use Tor over your VPN connection.

Isolating activities will not only offer the maximum privacy, it also will offer the best security. Additionally, good virtualization software like those listed above enables the creation of snapshots. For example, see Taking, Restoring, and Deleting Snapshots for how to use snapshots in VirtualBox.

Difficult - use a VPN client on your firewall.

If you have some knowledge of networking and a capable (possibly enterprise-class) firewall, such as pfSense, at home then you can implement an OpenVPN client on your firewall and route all traffic on a specified subnet to the VPN service. For example, firewall rules could be written so any computer on a subnet (say 192.168.3.0/24) will access the Internet through the VPN service without having the VPN client installed. This approach will offer more flexibility for using a VPN service on a home network, but is a bit more difficult to get working.

Thanks for answering my questions on NIC. For $11.50 I might as well get a NIC card if it is going to make things easier.

I have done the VM's before and was hoping to get everything to play well together without having to spin up any of those.

Your best bet is something like this with pfsense installed.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0148IN1N2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_gmFmzbBSGW1ZY

It'll give you the best VPN speeds and it's somewhat future proof.

I wouldn't really consider the LinkSys WRT3200ACM to be "hardcore". While running Mullvad on the OpenVPN client on my PC fully saturates my ISP's bandwidth of ~200mbit/s download, running OpenVPN with the same configuration as I was on my PC, but on my WRT3200ACM yields ~132.5mbit/s of download maximum.

The speed you will see is heavily dependent on the type of CPU your router is running. If you have a bandwidth of anywhere above 100mbit/s and want to be able to saturate that with a router, you're gonna have to pay up.

TL;DR- The WRT3200ACM has a 1.8GHz dual core processor, and that caps out, I'd say, at ~135mbit/s depending on the level of encryption your VPN supports / you choose to run. Get something which is 1.8Ghz quad core and supports AES-NI and you should be fine. As for router firmware I'd recommend DD-WRT or OpenWRT, but they might take some getting used to depending on how savvy you are.

> GL.iNet router (the Gigabit AC model)

Is this the one you got?

https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-B1300-Gigabit-400Mbps-pre-installed/dp/B079FJKZV8

And if so, are you pretty happy with it and it's performing as you expected?

I like these, good through put for SMB and easy to configure VPN tunnels and they are only 60 bucks per router for the non wireless version. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007B60SCG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a pair of them running a remote ip phone over public internet connections.

office phone system -> TP link router -> time warner --- IP SEC VPN --- att uverse <- tp link router <-- ip phone

Does it have to be from that website? I found it on amazon. I also couldn't find it online, not even libgen. I did find a solution manual and its on slader.com also.

Using a VPN should work and there should not be a problem with using a debit card (although I would use a credit card if you have one). Here is a list of lots of VPNs. Any should fit your needs, the specific one is up to you. Personally, I have used and am a fan of Private Internet Access and NordVPN.

Personally, I like and use the Cisco-Linksys WRT600N as it has the bells I want and is easy to install the DD-WRT onto

u/Victorc777 · 8 pointsr/VPN

If I were doing this (Might look into it now), you could use this splitter LINK. Create a VLAN with the VPN and connect both cables, from VPN and open ports to this splitter. They can then select the one they want to use with a push of a button. This is obviously not exactly what you wanted, but if you turned the WiFi off on the Router, or setup the VPN on a standard managed switch, you could connect the Router/Wireless AP after this Switch. I like this idea and likely going to implement it soon. Thank you for the question/idea!

I just bought my first DD-WRT router the other day for about $40. Haven't gotten around to setting up the VPN but it has much more in terms of options compared to my last router. Looks better too

u/tehpuppet · 3 pointsr/VPN

I was looking for something like this recently as well. However it seems even the >£250 commercial routers have trouble with openvpn above 50mbit. So I bought this cheap fanless PC and installed pfsense on it. The N3150 has the new AES-NI instructions so easily handles OpenVPN at >100mbit. Also with the flexibility of pfsense you can configure the firewall rules to exclude certain sites from being routed through your VPN gateway etc.

Amazon: Anarchist Cookbook $19.96 for soft cover lol

u/onlineads · 1 pointr/VPN

So would something like this work?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KWHMR6G

Only local though right? What would I need to do to have people be able to login remotely?

u/play4clay · 1 pointr/VPN

Thanks , I bought this item instead as was lot cheaper and also was advised on here , however not a clue how to set it up or if I need s vpn with it.

Just setup your VPN on this, and plug whatever your are going to torrent with in the lan port or WIFI.
http://www.amazon.com/GL-MT300N-Standard-pre-installed-Repeater-Tethering/dp/B01AL7P1FU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1465071553&sr=8-1&keywords=openwrt

Instructions here:
https://tokyobreeze.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/install-openvpn-in-a-router-with-4mb-flash/

Nice thing is that if the VPN drops, the firewall on the router won't forward traffic from the LAN side.

I'm currently using a GL.iNet GL-AR300M. I'm using it in my hotel overseas right now through a captive portal. You can also run a VPN on the router itself. I believe it satisfies everything you're describing.

u/dunnonuttinatall · 1 pointr/VPN

Why not go external?
https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR750-300Mbps-pre-installed-Included/dp/B07712LKJM

If you can make X run off just the second NIC then a router with built in vpn support should do the trick I would think.

If you want to go a little fancier:
https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR750S-Ext-pre-Installed-Cloudflare-Included/dp/B07GBXMBQF

You might even have a router already that can do this:

If you can afford it, get this to connect to your VPN. Some VPNs offer different ways to connect to bypass blocks. In the case of Netflix, you will likely need a static IP that is viewed as a residential one by Netflix to avoid being blocked (that may cost more unfortunately). TORGuard may have all of the things you need. They may also have a preconfigured VPN router to buy on their store that you can use. I'd contact them and ask them what your best option is.

Found out the other is discontinued so definitely buy this instead:

It is much cheaper to flash the firmware by yourself on a router that supports Tomato or DDR- WRT and then use the built in VPN client.

For that money the flash routers are a scam: They charge you e.g. USD 349.99 for the netgear nighthawk r700:
https://www.flashrouters.com/blog/2016/02/03/the-best-tomato-routers-of-2016/

On Amazon you can buy it for 159.00 USD: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1900-Gigabit-Support/dp/B00F0DD0I6
