In your situation, as much as you prefer uprights, I would buy a canister. Why? Because you are a apartment dweller, & you have both hard floors & carpets to clean. Uprights can do both, but not as good as a canister with a horsehair hard floor brush. A canister would also be better for a apartment dweller because you can get under low spaces like beds & coffee tables easier, get into tight spaces, & if you move into a apartment later that has all hardwood floors & area rugs & small scatter rugs, you can still use your canister - but an upright? Nope. Most won't do small scatter rugs as well, & don't pick up as well on hard floors as a canister does. Also, if you plan on using the hose a lot with the attachments for furniture or above floor cleaning, the hoses on canister vacuums are MUCH BETTER & nicer to work with than the stretch hoses on upright vacuums.

In your price range, you could look into getting a used or refurbished Aerus Electrolux or TriStar CXL canister from a local vac shop or Ebay. They are both quality brands, bags & supplies are reasonably priced, & they have decent cleaning performance & reliability. You could also look into a used Miele canister with the SEB228 or SEB236 as well, especially if dust emissions is a concern. You can get generic HEPA filters & generic bags for them at reasonable prices, & although some people here & vac shops don't recommend using generic bags in them, I have not had a issue with the generic bags as long as you use them with care. If you insist it must be new, though, there are a couple other options. The Riccar Prima canister can be found for slightly out of your price range, & is a high quality bagged powerhead canister with HEPA filter & metal brushroll. You could also look at the Bissell Powergroom canister, that is in your price range & is bagless if you prefer that. https://www.amazon.com/Bissell-Powergroom-Multicyclonic-Bagless-Canister/dp/B01AAYGAFY/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=canister+vacuum&qid=1562192705&s=gateway&sr=8-25

If you look at uprights, make sure it has some way of shutting the brushroll off, whether it be by pushing a pedal that shifts the belt & the brushroll stops turning or a switch that shuts off a brushroll motor in the powerhead. The bagged Hoover Windtunnel suggested below would be a good pick. Anything from the T Series line would be a good choice. If you prefer, they also make bagless models. The Miele Dynamic U1 uprights I would not recommend. Miele's canisters are good, but their uprights are heavy & bulky, poorly designed & they have had several issues with them in the past, particularly with the quality of the onboard stretch hose. Bad enough that The Wirecutter dropped the Miele uprights from their list of recommended models. From Sebo's lineup, I would only recommend the Sebo Felix upright for your situation. Their uprights are reliable & well made, but also big & bulky. The Felix, however, has a brush on/off switch, swivel steering, the ability to convert to a handheld canister (albeit a bulky one), & the powerhead can be swapped for a hard floor brush to turn it into a full-sized upright stick vacuum. For a apartment dweller, that would be ideal in your situation, since you presently have 1/2 hard floor / 1/2 carpet, plus if you move to a place with all hard floors & area rugs & small scatter rugs, this is one upright you can still get use out of in that environment. The Fuller Brush recommendation is also good too, & like the others they have a HEPA Cloth bag & HEPA filter, but they are made in China. In your price range, for slightly more money, I would go to a vac shop & look at the Riccar Vibrance/Simplicity Symmetry uprights. Those are American made instead & slightly higher quality. For the price they want for that Fuller Brush upright, you could get a Panasonic upright from Amazon, with similar features, for 1/2 the price, with comparable quality. I would also take a look at the Cirrus uprights, they are another high quality upright comparable to Riccar/Simplicity & with similar features.

If you go for the Hoover Windtunnel or Fuller Brush, Riccar/Simplicity, Cirrus or Panasonic uprights, there is a hose kit available for them that gives you a super long hose, wands, crevice/dusting/upholstery tools & floor brush that you might also like to use as well for hard floors, as well as for above floor cleaning if you don't like a upright's stretch hose. As for cleaning pet hair, if you are talking about cleaning it off furniture, whatever you do don't get one of those turbo brushes! Yes, they do remove & clean the pet hair off the furniture, but the hair wraps around the brushroll & you spend just as much time cutting the pet hair off as you do vacuuming. What I have found really works well is if you buy a upholstery tool with red felt velour strips. These 2 upholstery tools from Shark & Miele are just examples, there are plenty you can find & choose from. Bissell & Hoover have also made pet hair tools in the past that have rubber blades & bristles that work well too. Also note that if you find a attachment that isn't 1 1/4"/32mm, & you want to use it with a vacuum that does use 32mm attachments, you can find all sorts of adapters to make tools fit different vacuums.

Thanks. Used to be a store in my town but unfortunately the closest one is about an hour and a half away now. I did some googling and I see what you're talking about, but I'm like 99.999% sure this model never had them. This vacuum is 15 years old. I found the base plate for this one and you can see they don't have the bars: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.picclickimg.com%2Fd%2Fl400%2Fpict%2F173964900920_%2FOreck-XL-Base-Bottom-Plate-Parts-for-Oreck.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpicclick.com%2FOreck-XL-Part-Bottom-Cover-Roller-Brush-142895625759.html&docid=wtMVw33Yq0oAgM&tbnid=vHw2ldYLB0laqM%3A&vet=10ahUKEwjbm8m03-rkAhVQnJ4KHfI9DkEQMwijAigBMAE..i&w=400&h=267&itg=1&bih=766&biw=1440&q=XL260HH%20oreck&ved=0ahUKEwjbm8m03-rkAhVQnJ4KHfI9DkEQMwijAigBMAE&iact=mrc&uact=8

Anyway, thanks again. Sorry if I came off like I'm questioning your expertise. I was mainly just curious for curiosity sake. I'm sure the roller needs changed. I may actually just buy a new one rather than try to perform maintenance on this one. Looks like Amazon has this one for $150: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NDNV18/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_J0RIDbHJZHDD1 Would you recommend that one? I figure if it lives half as long as my current one, that'll be great!

u/OmegaNaughtEquals1 · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

I would suggest the C1 Delphi. It has the basic electric brush (overkill for rugs, but great if you ever have a place with low-pile carpets and is upgradable to the 228 or 236 brush if you have hi-pile carpets). It comes with the Parquet Twister head which is essential for hardwood floors and is orders of magnitude better than the multihead (I have both). It's not fancy. It doesn't have the foot-operated suction adjustment switches, and I think it doesn't come with the HEPA filter (although you can buy one for it). Because you have a furry friend, I recommend getting the Handheld Turbobrush.

All of that said, go to your local Miele dealer and see what they have. There are special in-store-only models that are usually a better deal than what you can find online. But the C1 Delphi is where I would start.

u/Beard_of_Valor · 3 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Jumbled mess excused. Reading comprehension I have, Hmm?

Probably meant a U1.

Riccar uprights, noted.

C2 Electro + good idea for uncertain future, check. I watched the video here, I gotta say it seems nice to be able to flick a switch to turn off the roller and switch to hard surfaces. The rugs come with and stay with the unit, so I have a weird need to go from surface to surface or sort of dart and squeeze...

C1 line isn't sealed (HEPA? Filtration?). What I'm hearing is "when the filtration of your bag fails, you will have nothing left in that department and your machine will spew out the particulates it's meant to capture, rather than kicking them around the inside for a bit longer until you change the bag like a decent human person".

The C1 is only $300 on Amazon ($350 for the Limited which I'm guessing has the extra attachments, which I'd spring for). Should I just make out like a bandit? At half the price, I don't think I'd mind buying another vacuum after I settle down more (geographically). What am I "missing out on" from the C2 Electro +? Just the seal? And the remedy is to be mindful of the bags?

The C2 can be had at nearly the same low price (hard wood version), but it doesn't say "electro +" which, I gather from my exhaustive and somewhat confusing delve into the vacuum world refers to the electrobrush, essential for getting dirt out of carpets with a cannister vacuum. Am I on the right track here? Don't skip the electrobrush, full stop?

I don't mind driving 80 minutes one way to buy a vacuum. I mind driving 80 minutes one way to evaluate vacuums and pulling the trigger under pressure and leaving confused and regretful. I was looking forward to driving To The City to look at higher quality vacuums but as I was getting navigation I noticed they're permanently closed. It's down to totally sketchballs shacks with no riccar, miele, or sebo at all. Electrolux, maybe.

C3 is bigger. Okay, I'm a giant 6'4" young man, and not worried about hauling around a little extra. You lost me at door vs pig tail and I really did search for images and pig tails and I can only guess you're referring to the power cord. I guess the C3 goes to the base and not the electrobrush attachment? Something like that?

All in all, I absolutely recognize and accept that I'm going to get what I pay for. I believe there will be drawbacks and removed attachments that make the $300-$350 range vacuums deal breakers. My sister loves her Dyson and I don't mean to dissuade her (and in fact I've used it and thought it was just fine, it's a higher tier model for pets and does the job in their small single story house). I could get a Dyson, but I feel like I would regret not getting a decent vacuum for the same reason you want a decent bed. It's not the most glamorous piece of your house, but dang if a good one doesn't pay dividends for your health and well-being and happiness. With that in mind, it sounds like a C-series is right for me. The C1 sounds like it's more of a cost savings and physically lighter model. The C2 sounds more like an all-rounder, and the C1 is King Kong Big Boy, same power and price point just bigger. Am I anywhere near the mark?

You've been very helpful already, thanks.

Since you have a good budget I'm just going to link some quality vacuums. Ill point out a few important things about each vacuum.

1 This upright has more suction than most vacuums. It has a bare floor setting, a Hepa Filter, 14 Inch Cleaning Path, a 40 Foot cord, and a thermal reset switch. I rarely have any of these come back to my store and if they do it's usually user error. This unit is also designed to be their "Quiet Force" vacuum. I can vouch for that. It truly is a quiet vacuum. It's a nice feature if you can only vacuum at night while the kids are asleep. I do have to warn you that the back piece is just a tad weak on this unit because of all the weight the put into the head. However, this wont be a problem if you take care of your vacuums. And even if it does break the head will just droop down but it won't effect the vacuuming. This is one of my all time favorite uprights. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-UG729-Upright-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B008LA4F0M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458433913&sr=8-1&keywords=mc-ug729

2 This is the canister version of the upright panasonic in #1. They really have the same features but this isn't a "quiet force." However, you can turn the strength of the suction down on the hose so I guess that counts as making it quiet. This canister has a 24 foot cord/cord reel, telescopic wand, Hepa filter, and a 12 inch cleaning path. Don't be fooled by the price on this one either. Panasonic sells this for $500 on their website. They just made some deal with amazon I guess.... My cost to purchase this vacuum for resale is higher than what they sell it for :(
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-CG917-OptiFlow-Canister-Cleaner/dp/B005JTHQXQ/ref=pd_sim_sbs_201_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41S2xfqWXxL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=04KBB3V55GCA3J4S2MEC

3 The sebo felix is a good option too. Just know that if you have to get it repaired almost all of the parts will be "special order."

Feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions. Remember to order extra bags if you don't have a vacuum store near you.

Yeah, the secret to using a canister vacuum is having the correct attachments, especially for floor. It looks like that one comes with some decent attachments but I've had great luck with this guy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U0HXCDK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You'll have to essentially scrub the carpet, but it's doable. If your carpeted room is large it may very well count as a good part of your exercise for the day, vacuuming.

u/stizzleomnibus1 · 3 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

We tend to like bagged canister vacs. For what it's worth, a canister vac keeps its weight on the ground and just drags behind you. It's about the same weight if you have to carry it up stairs, but it's in two parts so it's way easier to carry.

Check this guy out.

It's got both a powered carpet head and a hardwood floor head included. It's corded which is way more powerful. It's bagged so you have to empty it far less often. The compact is also pretty light. And it's about $120 less than the dyson.

That said, the total package weight on Amazon is 3x as much. That includes multiple heads and accessories, so it doesn't weigh that much in practice. If you have stairs, this will definitely be harder to move up and down. That said, doing my stairs is the ONLY time I ever even lift my vacuum; it's meant to roll, so you never really have to pick it up unless you're storing it somewhere weird.

Hope that helps!

The issue we have had in repair with Hoover is waiting for the parts if they are even available. Ive seen people need to junk their Hoovers because we could not get parts for them and they were less than a year old. We have had better luck getting parts for Bissell.

We sell alot of these from our shop and have good reviews. Ya can get them from us but we are in Canada, since i saw you would like to support local. Which is great, you should always hit up the local Vac shop if you need a Vac.

The difference between the regular and pet models is just the tools, however the max has a few differences but the main one is that it has a different baseplate that does a great job of sealing to the carpet, improving performance and maximizing airflow through the carpet, also it happens to be cheaper at the moment so even if they were the same, the max would still be the best deal: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0055SNR2A/ref=psdcmw_510110_t2_B003EQ470G?th=1&psc=1

u/[deleted] · -1 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Sanitaires are great deep cleaning direct air vacuums but they are really only good for carpeting and nothing else. An attachment hose is really convenient. I think Riccar is having some problems so they are not treating their dealers that well.

there's always something like this that will perform almost as well the Riccar https://www.amazon.com/Hoover-WindTunnel-Upright-Cleaner-UH30600/dp/B0055SNR2A/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Hoover+Tempo&qid=1569703705&s=gateway&sr=8-4

Also, take a look at the Sebo Felix. Might be the best upright on the market for home use.

u/JonoDatInvento · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

The absolute best price to performance ratio would be an Oreck commercial bagged upright. You can get them on Amazon for sub $200.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NDNV18/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_V1NiDbVVWZZVD

If you want to splurge a little then look at used Miele or SEBO uprights, they're the industry standard for canisters as well. Just know you will probably have to pay closer to $400.

Good luck!

u/performancereviews · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

Good day to there are a lot of contradictions in there.

you do not save money and you actually create more waste with bagless vacuums.

I have multiple suggestions for you.

I'd actually recommend a bag vacuum where the bags are large any economical .
since you seem not to be concerned about wall to wall carpet which is a good thing.
I would recommend a Henry to you.
They make a long plug-in version well within your budget. Here is a Video

https://youtu.be/b0MqUb8JKNM

Here is the Cordless version of the same machine. Slightly out of your budget.
https://youtu.be/oYkoasXjlYw

Another great plug-in vacuum is the SEBO Felix again long cord and economical supplies.
https://youtu.be/AmEZb39TjmM

there is a less expensive version without as long of warranty but basically the same machine that can be bought here for$360

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5P91QH/?cv_ct_id=amzn1.idea.ROL97U14J79X&cv_ct_pg=storefront&cv_ct_wn=aip-storefront&ref=exp_cov_performancereviews_dp_vv_mw

You could look at a Dyson V8 if you want to buy a different floor tool. I don't recommend the v11 as it's too bulky.

https://youtu.be/3HsJJb-bUTc

Hope that helps.

u/flowstone · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Both have great filtration. Personally, I always go with sealed because I have such terrible allergies. You might find that you want a larger bag. The sealed filtration is worth it to me unless you want the larger bag.

The FiberTeQ and AllTeQ are basically the same thing. However, if you REALLY want something for your hardwoods, I'd really suggest adding on the Miele Parquett Twister brush. It's got way more rotation in the brush for getting in hard to reach places and it's really, really fantastic on sensitive hard flooring. You can't go wrong.

u/Xenu2112 · 3 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Thanks for the reply. The Windtunnel Max looks like a good choice (we definitely need above floor tools), but I'm a little confused by the choices I see in the Windtunnel line. Is there a big difference or advantage to the Maax compared to this Windtunnel T-Series? I see there is also a 'pet' model; are they all based on the same technology?

Thanks again, sorry for all the questions!

u/Honhonhon_ · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

Thank you for your answer.

I have to say I don't really want to spend $700 for only one bedroom... I saw this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075F41FZJ/ref=emc_b_5_t, is it worth it or not? Comments on Sears are pretty good compared to the one on Amazon so I'm not really sure.

u/Cap10323 · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

Honestly, Dyson makes the best cordless cleaners on the market IMO. They're the only cordless cleaners I've come across that have suction comparable to a 'real' vacuum. If you want a cordless cleaner, I'd buy a Dyson and skip the knock-offs.

That being said, Corded cleaners are cheaper, have more power, and have a much longer life expectancy (all Lithium Batteries have a finite lifespan).

I'd consider one of Dyson's corded models if you want Bagless, This DC33 is an excellent machine for the price.

If you want bagged, go for something like This Panasonic or This Hoover

Both of the machines I listed are "commercial grade" vacuums, meaning they lack cosmetic frills. But will be practically un-killable in residential use. Like.. Will literally last you 20 years.

EDIT: I forgot to mention noise levels. The Dyson I linked is extremely quiet, as is the Panasonic. The Hoover is slightly noisier, but nothing that's horrible.

u/DariusBieber · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

I would buy the older version, it’s still available for purchase.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0009ONZ8G/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1520147015&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=hoover+tempo&dpPl=1&dpID=31a988GQ9tL&ref=plSrch

And that vacuum is probably the best within the $100 price range. Amazon reviews are notoriously bad in rating vacuums. Most people aren’t aware what actually makes a good machine.

If your budget goes higher but within $200, then the Hoover Windtunnel (bagged) is your best bet.

u/IPL4YFORKEEPS · 3 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Every machine you linked to but the S/P windtunnel will without a doubt give you issues with the belt tensioner. It's definitely the Achilles heal of this style.

I also don't like how on the "Pet" and "Max" machines that you really can't use after market bags. For example, if you buy a bunch of generic Y bags online for either of these machines, often times the collar that holds them on is rounded on one end, but the bag dock only accommodates Hoover's square collar. May seem like a moot point, but it bugs me.

As vacuumsaregreat has said, older F&G style Eurekas are a good option for the price range, but if you want tools I'd look at the [Hoover Tempo] (http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-WidePath-Bagged-Upright-U5140900/dp/B0009ONZ8G)

Another $100 would open up a number of other options if at all possible.

u/rosyshalice · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

This vacuum
has been wonderful for my hardwood floors as well as the small area of carpeting I have. Hope this helps.

u/BeginnerInvestor · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Great suggestion. Thank You.
Reading the old threads I was leaning towards this one Hoover-WindTunnel-Bagged-Upright-UH30310!
But I can't see any difference between the two. What do you think?

u/vacuumsaregreat · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

After owing one for a few years, I'd strongly recommend a Hoover Platinum LiNX. Although you lose out on the DC59's above floor cleaning ability, this machine comes in at about half the price, meaning that you could pick up some kind of battery powered hand vac for those purposes.

What kind of environment will the vacuum be used in?

u/justaway3 · 1 pointr/VacuumCleaners

Is this Hoover Tempo the vacuum you are recommending? Also, I read somewhere that bagged vacuums are better than bagless, is that still true today?

u/ftendo · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Miele canisters are suppose to very good at controlling particulates. Though I don't have any personal experience with Miele Compact C2 Electro+ Canister Vacuum, it's apparently the Wirecutter's best pick for filtering allergen.
> Ultimately, some other vacuums match or nearly match the Miele models’ filtration, but we’re not aware of any that outperform it.

u/fe360 · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Miele C1 would be a good choice. It's the cheapest canister they offer, but straight suction is all you really need with hardwood floors. I would add the parquet twister, and possibly a turbo nozzle (STB-205) for the rugs, depending on the type.

Miele Classic C1

Miele STB 205-3 Turbo Plus Power Nozzle Attachment

Miele Parquett Twister SBB 300-3

u/hideo_james · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

It's slightly over your budget, but this Hoover Windtunnel T-Series seems to fit the bill.

I was planning on ordering from here: www.pwoutlet.com/Karcher-CV-300-Commercial-Upright-Vacuum-p/1.012-059.0.htm

Here's an Amazon listing (more expensive though and the product description doesn't match for some reason): www.amazon.com/12-Upright-Motor-Vacuum-300/dp/B01N5P91QH/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=karcher+cv300&qid=1556563049&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

I would get the commercial version of the Sebo Felix. Its about 300 - 350 online and is basicaly the same thing minus some features such as variable suction control and a swivel base.
