Details: It's a book the owner of the telegram room(t.me/vaporwavesadplanet) started to put together. The book is cut in half and each page are fun quotables by 2 computer systems in nostalgic reflection. One is rugged(Memphis Megahertz) and cyberpunk/spaghetti western in nature whilst the other (Kansas City Fractal) is traditional and emotional Vaporwave tech nostalgia and pre internet nostalgia stylings. We had a lot of fun compiling it and I(Robness) had help from the rest of the community members(mostly my other mod Rat Sarcoma) knock me down and made sure I wasn't falling too far off the mark. Truly a pleasure to make and I tried to make the cover as A E S T H E T I C as possible as ornamentation for future computer/coffee tables in a possible dystopian/utopian environment. Cheers! Here is a free PDF "Shareware" copy of the book to take a preview at....

The Amazon link for the physical copy is here. Thank you! The Amazon product link just launched so it's not fully compiled, the book description is all there and stuff though. I literally just pressed the PUBLISH button so yeah. Cool!

Yeah, someone dying is my best guess. It had to have been either some kind of compulsive thing or maybe it was some kind of journalistic research project along the lines of this:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Clothes-Have-Emperor-Chronicle/dp/0671673394

Almost definitely the first one, though.

EDIT: I guess the Amazon page for that book doesn't really describe it. The author and a few interns and assistants kept comprehensive records of the front page stories in something like 20 major newspapers and the lead stories on all of the major news shows every day for both terms of the Reagan administration, and that book is one of the things that came out of it; it's a fun read and pretty darkly satirical in its way.

I mostly use my 2002 lexus which has a really awesome cassette stereo. I also use a CD player with a cassette attachment and a pretty popular walkman you can buy off amazon. The walkman is really easy to use and includes a headphone jack and a usb attachment so you can upload your cassettes digitally.

I use a Sony CMT EP505 for home use. You can probably by one off ebay for <$50, great quality playback.

As for portable, pretty much anything goes. you can buy this for $20 off ebay (I believe it was half that when I was looking for one in europe)

If you want the highest quality, you go for nakamichi but I wouldn't suggest that for someone starting out unless you luck upon one in a thrift store.

u/coopxerxes · 2 pointsr/Vaporwave

Yeah it's a tiny boombox I suppose. It's cheap. I wasn't aiming for high fidelity playback: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TEYQQZQ

I suppose I could take it apart some time and tinker with it. Could be fun

Oh boy... kids these days...

Go buy you a $10 cassette recorder and some tapes, plug your line out from your computer sound card into the input of the cassette recorder, play the MP3s on your computer, and hit the record button on your cassette recorder. Then, you wait. Welcome to how we did it in 1985.

OR you could just get a tape player AUX adapter from wal-mart and plug your phone into your tape deck.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but the original Japanese CD version is only $20 on Discogs and from ¥864 ($7.90USD) on Amazon JP

Is the Taiwanese bootleg special in some way?

u/DJSlambert · 3 pointsr/Vaporwave

I have this one. It's more than you'll ever need until you get super serious about the hobby. This with a decent set of speakers will hold you over for years.

Blank casettes

Pretty sure I used to see these as a kid in the 2000's from my family. Also, they're prime.

because we're dealing with dinosaur technology, I only use amazon. Buncha shady looking websites out there, but to be hones they're probably just old.

And, here's the cassette labels

u/1_point_21_gigawatts · 2 pointsr/Vaporwave

Yeah this is pretty much how I remember the Weather Channel when I was a kid.

They used to pair it with elevator music, and it became so popular that they put it on CDs.

Here's an actual broadcast. Very similar to what OP posted. 1980s broadasts were similar as well. I guess a lot of this stuff was a precursor to Vaporwave.

u/FUFUCHANdotEXE · 3 pointsr/Vaporwave

It's $7.99 on Amazon, so that's a little better, at least.

u/Squircle_ · 3 pointsr/Vaporwave

You might want to check out Babbling Corpse. although it takes itself a bit too seriously at times, it presents a good comparison of vaporwave against modern culture and digs into the history and philosophy of where the culture of vaporwave exists.

u/pizmeyre · 1 pointr/Vaporwave

Get something like this and make your own from all the Vaporwave you have...

u/AndyTron_McBadass · 4 pointsr/Vaporwave

This.

There's a very Vapourwavy-feel around the seminal Nineties novel Generation X. The characters in that have a similar nostalgia for the 60s and 70s that never were...

u/Lugia909 · 1 pointr/Vaporwave

Strangely enough, there isn't a really comprehensive archive for effects processors...or at least if there is, I've never found it. There's archives for synths, there's Modulargrid for modular systems (which includes some stompboxes and 500-series gear), KVR Audio for audio and MIDI software, and so on...but you really don't see an informational clearinghouse for effects in general. It's something I would've thought would be out there, but no...

As books go, though, give this one a shot: https://www.amazon.com/Relentless-Pursuit-Tone-Timbre-Popular/dp/0199985235/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=distortion+music&qid=1554762550&s=books&sr=1-5 Oxford University Press's stuff is usually very well-researched and comprehensive, so this might be right up your alley.

u/Lurcho · 2 pointsr/Vaporwave

You can read Memphis Megahertz and the Kansas City Fractal if you want to try some vaporwave media outside of music or clips on YouTube. You can also ask your local library to acquire a copy, or find the shareware PDF of the book. It's not hard to find with a little Google searching.
