Small business owner here -

There's a strong self-employment and small business culture here, and people are very geared toward supporting businesses that are part of their community. I spend a great deal of my time in community engagement - not because I feel I have to to grow my businesses, but because I genuinely enjoy it. There's a ton of these community engagement opportunities around for my type of business, but your results may vary depending on your field.

I seriously doubt that the guy who said "you can't build a business for $50,000" has ever built a business of his own. Be careful that you never listen to advice from people who are less successful than you (including me, if that's the case!) I own 2 successful, profitable businesses - both cost less that $1000 to start up, and neither ever required me to go into debt. If you do decide to be a "shoestring entrepreneur," you will still need the $50,000 to support your living expenses for at least the 6 months of full time or greater work it takes to get a business to the point where you are "ramen profitable."

I will often tell people that the first business and/or skill an entrepreneur should have is web site design and development. I don't mean being able to sign up for a free website on blogspot or tumblr, this will not cut it in my opinion. The most important web skills to learn are coding HTML/CSS, being able to manage your own server/domains, and knowing as much as possible about search engine optimization and keywords.

Since I try to walk what I talk, the first business in Victoria I started up was Fernwood Web Design, then I took over a pre-existing waste service business called Pedal to Petal. Either business could support me on its own, but I need the variety that these 2 businesses offer me. I operate a few other micro-businesses and passive revenue websites, but these 2 make up the bulk of how I support myself.

The best book I've read on starting your own shoestring businesses is Making a Living Without a Job by Barbara Winters, which I know is available at the central Victoria library ;) It's a book that fits well with my slightly ADD personality, so you may get more or less out of it than I did.

As far as business fields go, I think it's better to work in a field you're interested in with less perceived demand than a more in demand field that you know or care little about. I'm in the agriculture/composting field because that's what I like, even though it has a lower earning potential compared to other fields.. lawyers, for example.

If you want to discuss more, you can email me. You should be able to find my contact through one my sites I've linked to.

I like a good hand-crank one. My Porlex Mini is ceramic burr and perfectly fits 26g of beans so it's ideal for me and getting the one shot. I bought it for camping but now I use it daily because it's actually a pretty great feeling to grind it yourself. Been using it every day for almost a year with only good things to say about it. It was $50 on Amazon, plus shipping. There's also a larger variety.

As for electric ones, I think you'll be looking at one in the $100-150 range like the Baratza Encore to get something that will be consistent as well as not wear out in a year like many other grinders do after the first few hundred uses. There are better versions of the Baratza that are good enough to be used in small Cafes that may better suit your needs. Do some searches in r/Coffee and there's probably some good choices there. I found for my use (Moka pot/Aeropress) that my hand crank works best and that I don't need a big grinder. The few sub $100 that I have owned never lasted longer than a year, and were inconsistent and eventually simply unable to work at all due to the lower quality grinders cutting the beans rather than truly grinding them.

I will also put in my +1 for Caffe Fantastico beans. The Ethiopia Kaffa Forest beans are wonderful.

Grocery stores I'd say

  • Kicking Horse
  • Level Ground
  • Saltspring Island

I bought a used Leaf 2 years ago from a private seller. Interestingly enough used prices for Leafs are up since then. After driving the car for 2 years the car is worth the same or more than when I bought it.

Advice for buying now:

  1. Buy an ODB adapter and the LeafSpy app https://www.amazon.ca/LELink-Bluetooth-Energy-OBD-II-Diagnostic/dp/B00QJRYMFC or similar
  2. Test the vehicle before buying it and check the Battery State of Health (SoH) and Hx values in LeafSpy. Higher is better. Motorize will give you LeafSpy output for their Leafs but Campus Nissan will not. Their official Nissan battery report is useless.
  3. If you can find a Leaf that came from Washington / Seattle that's generally better than California because the heat is what causes battery degradation so those from the pacific northwest are usually in better shape.
  4. In Victoria Motorize are the better dealer but prices tend to be a bit higher than campus nissan but they are more honest. Cross shop both of them. If you have the time you can likely find even slightly better deals in Vancouver.

Enjoy! I'm liking mine after 2 years. Battery not as good as a Tesla for sure for less than a quarter of the price I'm ok with that.

I haven't actually read this book, but it got good reviews as offering a balanced and informative perspective:

"The Patch: The People, Pipelines, and Politics of the Oil Sands" by Chris Turner

>Bestselling author Chris Turner brings readers onto the streets of Fort McMurray, showing the many ways the oilsands impact our lives and demanding that we ask the question: In order to both fuel the world and to save it, what do we do about the Patch?

>
>In its heyday, the oilsands represented an industrial triumph and the culmination of a century of innovation, experiment, engineering, policy, and finance. Fort McMurray was a boomtown, the centre of a new gold rush, and the oilsands were reshaping the global energy, political, and financial landscapes. The future seemed limitless for the city and those who drew their wealth from the bitumen-rich wilderness.

>
>But in 2008, a new narrative for the oilsands emerged. As financial markets collapsed and the scientific reality of the Patch’s effect on the environment became clear, the region turned into a boogeyman and a lightning rod for the global movement combatting climate change. Suddenly, the streets of Fort McMurray were the front line of a high-stakes collision between two conflicting worldviews—one of industrial triumph and another of environmental stewardship—each backed by major players on the world stage.

>
>The Patch is the seminal account of this ongoing conflict, showing just how far the oilsands reaches into all of our lives. From Fort Mac to the Bakken shale country of North Dakota, from Houston to London, from Saudi Arabia to the shores of Brazil, the whole world is connected in this enterprise. And it requires us to ask the question: In order to both fuel the world and to save it, what do we do about the Patch?

I got a Zinus off Amazon after mentioning that I was planning on getting an Endy to a friend. I have the 12" thick King and it's been amazing, probably the best mattress I've had definitely the best value mattress I've had. Almost no motion transfer with someone else in the bed, right on my taste for the soft/firm balance.

I did notice while I was planning towards buying one that pricing fluctuated by about $50 every 10 days or so. Seems the mean pricing is about $475 so wait a bit and it will get there.

It is fascinating how much FUD there is out there about babies on bikes! I even read one article that insisted that the vibrations from a bike would lead to baby brain damage!

Anyway ... based on my own googling, it seems like regardless of age or weight, as soon as your baby can hold their own head up, there a multiple options:

  • Baby in front or rear bike seat (The Wirecutter just did some reviews actually)
  • Baby in chariot trailer (possibly with added support like this)
  • Baby in a secure seat in a front cargo bike box (like this)

If you're just looking for a bit of a pep talk, I think there's some nice advice at the end of this Wirecutter article and also some good Nordic straight talk in this Copenhagenize post.

If you're looking for a vote of confidence, you have mine. My family lives downtown and doesn't own a car and I have no intention of being housebound if we become parents.

Instead of something that's simply heavier, I'd go with a U-Lock + cable combo. The smaller you can get the better! Harder to break if it's really tight to the bike. Here's a great mini version of the above lock style: http://www.amazon.ca/Kryptonite-Evolution-Bicycle-3-25-Inch-FlexFrame/dp/B005YPK9VQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1450290745&sr=1-3&keywords=kryptonite+u-lock+mini

Good luck finding your bike.

Best bet might be to buy the bottles separately in bulk and fill them yourself, if you have a bit of time you could make fun party labels for them too.

Pojar and Mackinnon is probably the best. Not purely edible but a great field guide with ethnobotanical tidbits.

Here is a good deal on a new hard drive. And like /u/ehManiacal said, I would not bother with a used HD, just not worth the risk.
I have 4 GB of DDR3 ram and a case that I'm not using, let m know if you are interested.
You can also get a new 120GB ssd from new egg for like $50.

I got the 12" yeah, looks like it's on sale now as well:

I find it pretty firm, even sitting on the edge it doesn't give way as much as a worn out spring mattress will, I was really surprised. I'm not a tiny person either, so average sized people will find it really firm.

I'll basically always buy this style from now on, and at this cost and the convenience of having it show up at my house why not?

We tried about 5 different iterations of fencing, everything from the rings of fishing line to 8' mesh "deer proof" fencing. They got through it all, and ate all everything. They saved the "deer resistant" plants for last.

What I did have great success with is a pair of Contech Scarecrow motion activated sprinklers. I have them linked together, about 20' apart, and hooked up to a faucet with a timer attached. The sprinklers are "armed" from about 5pm until 5am.

They've worked great. The deer hate them, the cats hate them, kids cutting through my yard hate them. Sometimes late at night, as I'm drifting off to slumber, I faintly hear the sprinklers go active, and I giggle myself to sleep.

If your bike is worth at least a hundred bucks to you, you could always buy something like this. They deterents are good, but tracking is better. Just how it in the seats or the handle bars or something.

This video by the LockPickingLaywer on the Kryptonite lock is useful to watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iaj6Hh2kr9E

Those New York models are 150ish on Amazon.

I went with the cheaper Canadian Tire option after my cable lock was cut in James Bay 48 hours after moving back downtown from Saanich.

So clearly it can be picked if you have the fancy tool, I'm hoping our local thieves just have more general tools and only cutting resistance is really your friend in that situation.

Diversity in your garden is really good for attracting pollinators. As an example, we have several families of hummingbirds who regularly visit our garden because we not only have feeders out (small, unobtrusive ones, like this one), but have a variety of flowers that hummingbirds like, here and there (trumpet vines, rhododendrons, etc). We also have diversity in our food garden, intermixing or food plants with various flowers.

ojocam Pro dashcam New Mini 0801

I like it alot, its small, the 1080p video is good for both day and night, I have two examples on my channel

There was enough length on the power cable to hide it and rout to the center glove box 12V outlet

I've hat it for just over a month, so far no complaints, it saves the videos as .mov though, but you can convert it if you so desire, the software is interesting, it brings up a google (or bing if you like) map and plots out your route which is kinda cool

nah, I think the free prime shipping is only for things shipped by amazon. Since the guys selling Aardvark are some random reseller it is still expensive to ship (and shipping time is usually forever for resellers in my experience).

The link if you are interested: https://www.amazon.ca/Secret-Aardvark-Habanero-Hot-Sauce/dp/B00AIR3Q38/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505836571&sr=8-1&keywords=secret+aardvark+habanero+hot+sauce

The Haunting of Vancouver Island might interest you, he talks about some First Nations folklore and various creatures like Mesachie Man. Even for the skeptics, the book covers quite a bit of interesting history.
