I use this Manfrotto, and have shot the Northern Lights successfully on my multiple trips there. My worry for your use is the longer lenses. But honestly, this weighs like two pounds, packs well, and if it's windy I hang a weight from the center. Maybe look at a step up from the one I use if you are looking at using heavier lenses (I shoot mirrorless, so this model is perfect for me). Good luck!

Interesting to hear that the campers are so similar!

Looks like GoCampers offers a cooler for 15 euro, which isn't too bad. As for the cigarette port, this looks like it'd serve our purposes. Thanks!

I was very happy with the Sierra Designs Hurricane pants I bought last year for Iceland in October: https://www.amazon.com/Sierra-Designs-Womens-Hurricane-Pant/dp/B00NJJQ06C

They pack down into the side pocket, so I could carry them in a pack to have handy if needed. They were loose enough that I could just pull them on over merino leggings which is mostly what I wore when I was there. But they still had a bit of a shape to them so it didn't look like I was wearing a plastic garbage bag like some rain pants do. With those plus some tights underneath I was perfectly warm and dry.

Glad to hear the tour is a good choice!

Okay, so we did have the SPOT beacon, so we'll look into getting GPS unit. Nothing showed up on Eastern Moutain Sport's website so I took a look around amazon, is this what you're talking about?

We're planning on leaving our itinerary with safetravel and our emergency contacts, so we'll be set in that department. And yeah, we're not planning on sending out an emergency call unless we're physically stuck.

Here's a more detailed look at our itinerary:

Also, I totally get what you're saying about multiple mountain trails. the frustration is that these websites (which are official ones!) don't list like 8 trails, they just give driving instructions to a parking lot at the base of whatever location and say "the trail is clearly marked from there". Example: http://www.icelandtrails.com/trails/hafnarfjall/

Finally, for robust and massive spikes, those Grivel G10s look like the kinds given out when we go on the glacier walk tour. I don't want you to feel like I'm arguing (from a position of little knowledge, no less) but could you help me understand their necessity for climbing up a gravelly/rocky/dirt-ish slope? In comparison to the microspikes, of course, we wouldn't go without something at least equivalent to the Kathoola Microspikes.

I'm going to Iceland in three weeks so just trying to gather all the necessary clothes. Some of you guys recommended Frogg Toggs - do you think this jacket is worthwhile? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Frogg-Toggs-Signature75-Jacket-XX-Large/dp/B00EIP513O/ref=sr_1_78?srs=3565841031&ie=UTF8&qid=1520093456&sr=8-78&th=1&psc=1

Waterproof but not windproof? Would I be alright just layering up and battling the wind that way? I am considering going to the Westmann Island so I imagine that will be pretty windy.

EDIT: just noticed that that is out of stock for the moment... Now looking at this one, no reviews but looks similar? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Frogg-Toggs-Action-Jacket-Black/dp/B006IOLB78/ref=sr_1_82?srs=3565841031&ie=UTF8&qid=1520093603&sr=8-82&th=1&psc=1

I bought these Xpeti insulated waterproof hiking boots before I visited in March, and they were awesome for the price ($69). Went through deep snow and some wet stuff, always kept my feet dry and warm.

We were there in December and I think this matches up with our experience. If you want to drive up to the Dyrhólaeyjarviti lighthouse (my absolute favorite view on our south coast drive), the hill says 4x4 required. We saw a 2 wheel FWD about 3/4 up and their wheels were spinning at one point. It may be possible to get up, but probably not a smart idea.

We didn't bring any crampons and that's one thing we regretted. There were some views we couldn't comfortably get to due to ice next to the edge of a cliff. One place we saw them for sell had them for about $75/pair. You can get something like these these for $65.

We had water resistant boots, pants, and jackets and it was awesome.

I use a toshiba flashair memory card that allows me to put any phone on its wifi network created by the memory card, the photos transfer to the phone and can then be backed up to google photos or whatever your preferred service is. It is not the most user friendly system, so I made a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNMNg6rK2pE
You can find it at:

We took this with us when we were in Iceland. While everyplace has at least roller-shades and most curtains as well the issue is the shades do not block the top and sides completely. I also recommend buying some packing tape or duct tape when you get there to tape the curtains to the side.

Earlier this week, I wore these Singbring Women's Outdoor Lightweight Waterproof Hiking Mountain Pants from Amazon and they worked really well. I layered them on top of jeans or leggings, so you may want to size up. I hiked in light rain and barely noticed because of the pants and my rain jacket.

Bring your own they are cheap... here are 2 of my favorites

Just make sure your electronics can handle a 220v input (most modern electronics you will see are rated for 100-220v which means you can use them anywhere as long as you have an adapter)

u/bitchbanana · 6 pointsr/VisitingIceland

They have the same outlets as EU. I bought this one and it worked great, plus you can use it for other travels since it's universal: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074CRS574/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
