> I'm gonna need extensions.

I had good luck with 10 foot for each via Amazon.

  • https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7SA21U/

    --------------------------------------

    > Overall, setup was 9/10, but I'm giving it 5/10 because of the issues I had.

Similar here. I can see how it's supposed to be very smooth and quick, and I think re-establishing setup (if I were portable) would be very quick, but I had a number of issues that prolonged things.

    --------------------------------------

    > This does require you to have a lit room

This was disconcerting for me as well as preventing me from using VR sometimes since my VR area borders the den/living room and the breakfast nook and my wife often vetoed the turning up of all the lights (in the evenings).

    --------------------------------------

    > Controller tracking 8/10

I'd only give them 6/10. It's highly dependent on tolerance, body type, play style, and which game / experience you're using. My thoughts: https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsMR/comments/7qlhde/samsung_odyssey_owners_are_you_happy/dsq5nh5/

    --------------------------------------

    > You will notice some black smear

I started noticing more of it as I dug back through my backlog of games and apps. The Quake II SteamVR environment, Allummette (the night scenes), and the large theater room in BigScreen are three places that had pretty awful black smear that I remember. In other places it was not noticeable though.

    --------------------------------------

    > Colors are also very vibrant

I agree, I thought the color pop was excellent and fun in the Odyssey, and simply made me want to try a lot of different things to see what they looked like.

    --------------------------------------

    > I think it's a tad bigger at least for me

Interesting, my buddy and I both thought his Vive with DAS and 6mm pad had the slight edge in terms of FOV, as well as amount of pupil swim, and there was something subtley not quite as impressive about either the binocular overlap or just the "closeness" of images in the Odyssey, but it was still very good and the great contrast and higher resolution made up for it.

    --------------------------------------

    > The forehead pad and back pad are nice and comfortable with most of the weight resting on the forehead and off of the nose/cheek area.

Eventually that forehead pad really started to dig into my forehead. I had a couple sessions that gave me real pain. Here was my solution: https://imgur.com/a/a9lqJ

    --------------------------------------

    > The damn nose flaps.

I totally agree! These would block about 70% of my nasal airflow! But there is an easy fix -- fold them back in behind the lenses. Works great, stays in place, and is easily reversible.

    --------------------------------------

    > They are comfortable and easy to position.

I found them a bit hard to get a good seal with. The DAS seems more articulatable which helps get a better on-ear seal which gives it the potential for a bit more perceived bass and therefore a bit more balanced frequency response. But neither holds up against my Audio-Technica ATH-M50s. I'm hopeful the Vive Pro audio addresses that a little more.

    --------------------------------------

    > If you are looking for a portable VR experience with a laptop or like to travel and show others VR without having to set up lighthouses or cameras

Yep, that is definitely the big benefit of the Odyssey. It can't be beat for that type of use case. It was kind of lost on me (no laptop, single permanent VR space at home), and I eventually decided due to the substandard controllers and controller tracking that it was worth more turned back into $486 so I returned it after 8 weeks due to Microsoft's very generous holiday return policy. I knew I'd miss it (certain aspects of it) and I do. If I were more into sims and had a driving setup it would have been a tougher call by far.

I do hope they pull together a version with more cameras that can handle the controllers getting close to the cameras and operate in lower light. Best would be some way to give the controllers actual inside-out tracking of their own using their own cameras but that might require a prohibitively large amount of information sent over Bluetooth (BT 5.0?) to the CPU for the Machine Vision algorithm.

First thing anyone should buy is Deluxe Audio Strap. Can't stress that enough.

Vive-N-Chill is also really useful. It may seem silly, but it actually works really well. When I use any other headset for active gaming I really miss it.

Hyperskin covers for the controllers are awesome, comfortable, add grip and help with the occasional wall scrape. Though personally I ditched the headset one as I feel like it may trap in heat. Does look cool though. But the controller ones are a must have.

One of my absolute favorite VR accessories: 1" MMA floor tiles. Worth every penny. Way better than any thinner solutions and you can really kneel/roll around on the ground comfortably and stand for hours on it. Can be disassembled for transport and does not slide on carpet. They seem to be holding up to heavy duty long term use so well they should last for years through multiple generations of headsets.

My favorite face cushion for personal use is the stock foam one. Comfortable, breathes, and absorbs moisture and wicks it away. Nice to break out the fancy faux-leather ones for guests and stuff, but the original stock ones are the best for serious game sessions, at least in my opinion. Just hand wash it on occasion.

These guitar hangers are cheap and awesome for hanging controllers from when paired with some 10 foot usb micro cables for charging. Maybe not as cool looking as the special charging stand, but a whole bunch of pairs are great for different VR controllers if you have more than just a pair to deal with.

And, if/when you ever tire of the Base Stations' function to remotely power up/down automatically being fussy, slow or intermittent, then remote power outlets will make you happy. They make the base stations spring to life and sync in a few seconds compared to the slow blue tooth routine and power off when you want them off.

I'm not the guy you asked, but I ALSO have the G930s. They're nice, but I won't be buying them again. I find the wireless to be flaky when my wife uses HER wireless headset (another Logitec, but not G930s), and the battery is nearly worthless after 2 years of ownership (though I do a fair bit of gaming, so YMMV). Next headset I buy is gonna be a pair of these bad-boys, and I'm gonna slap some of these on 'em. If I need a mic, I'll grab something like this. Won't be wireless, but I've got a cheap bluetooth headset if I need to move around the house. Since my HMD is tethered ANYWAY, I don't mind the headphones being so as well. :)

Hope that was somewhat helpful! :)

EDIT: OK, so here I am, nearly a month later. My G930s finally gave up the ghost, and I went ahead and bought about what I describe above (haven't picked up a mic yet (doesn't make sense at this point, with the Vive so close), but I've got the Superlux cans and 3rd party earcovers), and I'm LOVING them. Nice sound, though quieter than expected - I've not dealt with anything but USB headsets for a while, so I'm pretty sure I need an amp, which I can't fault them for, I knew it was a possibility going in. In any event, though a bit quiet at this point, it's not to the point of unhearability or anything. I just can't make it annoyingly loud if I want to. I'm also irked at the tiny male jack hardwired into them - I'd rather have a flush female jack, but what 'cha gonna do?

Beyond those two TINY issues (the first is only an issue due to my not realizing they'd need a bit more juice, and the second is annoying, but not at all a dealbreaker), I'm LOVING them for the price. Reproduction sounds pretty good (good enough for mixing with, anyway), and comfort is GREAT (they feel VERY light). YMMV, but I'm a happy camper with my Superlux HD668B semi-open cans (just don't forget the (<$10!) 3rd party covers - they REALLY improve on the default comfort).

EDIT #2: I'm a jackass. I had them plugged into line-in. When I found a second line-in (this one actually labeled and recognized by the OS as a headphone jack), the softer sound issue went away.

Cheap tripods are great for traveling, and I've given over a hundred demos with them, but they kinda get in the way, and the larger you make the footprint (to improve stability) -the more they encroach in your play space.

I use these tripods with these swivel adapter things for my on-the-road show. As long as they don't get bumped, you're good to go.

For home, I use This tension rod and this rod mount - you may need a longer rod- I run it from the top of my dresser to the ceiling and the top of my computer desk to the ceiling. The 87 inch one isn't long enough to go from floor to ceiling for me.

As far as other essentials, two of these help with plugging the lighthouses in. An HDMI Extender, Power extender, and a USB 3.0 Extender (those three work perfectly for me) will make your life 100x more easy, especially if your computer isn't directly next to your play space. The extra 10 feet makes a world of difference for reducing tangles, reducing the number of times you have to stop and untwist your cord, and making you not worry about yanking on your computer when you get to the far corner.

Lastly, this wireless keyboard thing will save you from running back and forth from your desktop.

---

As far as sweatyness, I got over the ickyness pretty quickly. My friends have mastered basic hygiene, and face sweat doesn't smell all gross or anything. After each demo, I run the foam under the sink to rinse it off, then dab it with a paper towel and set it on a box fan to dry. It's good to go as soon as the next person is done and I repeat the process. I ended up buying a set of new face foams from the HTC website after I lost my narrow face foam though :(

Details:

Based of this post by /u/veriix and the headstrap adapter by /u/nw15062 using this as the headstrap replacement.

It blows my mind how well it works. It took a bit of tweaking, sizing, etc, to get it set up just right. I was skeptical thinking it might only make a very VERY slight difference compared to the default Vive velcro straps... but thankfully I was mistaken. It makes a huge difference.

The headstrap seems to hug your head like I imagine the PSVR head-mount does. All the extra cushion really helps, and thanks to the slight downward angle of the adapter between the straps and HMD itself, there is a super handy pivot outwards effect that when worn, the headset just ever-so-gently slips down towards your face with only about ~5-10% of the pressure compared to the default straps.

Basically, it essentially eliminates the all of the weight from the HMD resing on your forehead / cheekbones... and taking it on and off is super comfortable as it pivots up and out, away from your face when taking it off or peeking out from under.

EDIT: After playing with it for a bit, I have came to the conclusion that it's about 20% more comfortable on the head, but removes about 90% of the front-weight face pressure. It could be more comfortable around the temples when tightening it all down.

u/patrickstarfishh · 0 pointsr/Vive

I bought something similar to those light stands, but didn't like them....they "cut" into your roomscale zone, and they can not be as sturdy as you really want them to be (the lighthouses shouldn't move even the slightest bit).

I kept them for when i take my vive somewhere else and use as a portable solution. After some research, I use these now and love them...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3B4YPS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and for actually holding the lighthouse onto the pole...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CSMCPKQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

those are totally metal, and worth the slight extra price compared to plastic ones (but you could probably save a little money with the plastic ones).

those poles are great and easy to move too!

hope it helps, and you made the right choice w/ vive, it's the superior HMD by far.

The obligatory "just got my Vive" post by ncviver

Damn. God damn. It's really, really good. I had some ordering issues (because I used PayPal Credit and didn't create an HTC account I couldn't check the order status on my own) but it arrived quickly and works so so well. I got two of these tripods plus two of these brackets since I wanted some mobility. So far I've used it in the living room with two tripods and in my bedroom with one of the included wall mounts and a tripod. It works great, though I do plan on installing the other wall mount (plus these two in the living room) soon.

My only complaint at this time (after maybe 3 hours of usage) is that it seems like a major oversight that there's not much instruction on how to adjust it to fit your head. Initially, I was actually pretty disappointed-- the FOV sucked and apart from a narrow sweet spot it was quite blurry. But after finding this guide it's working fine.

but yeah, right now I'm really impressed. I've only really played around with The Lab so far since my wallet is a bit too sore to start buying tons of games, but I'm guessing that'll happen pretty soon.

I'll just mention stuff I've tried myself.

If money is no object, multiple monitors or at least headless ghosts are ironically useful in virtual desktop applications like Bigscreen. I run 3x2560x1600 in one large screen. Bigscreen has an update coming for multiple monitors too. Big physical screens are nice for spectators/multiplayer.

Until the wireless adapter comes out, a decently long displayport cable and longer USB cable running to the link box to cover the large play area and if you have an original Vive, the new 3-in-1 cable with a sleeve.

I've been looking at [this overhead pulley thing](https://www.amazon.com/MDW-Retractable-Management-Headset-Adhesive/dp/B01M6EB8DM/
) but I haven't actually tried it yet.

Two Vives would be good, you can run them off the same 2 base stations and partition the space with chaperone. I run a Rift and a Vive in the same room.

Get an assistant/intern/wife/child to help you set up/put things away, maintain everything, patch/update, find new content, etc...

Accessories:

  • Wireless headset/mic and an anchor for it
  • HOTAS, pedals (CH Throttle, T16000M, driving pedals for Elite Dangerous)
  • Force feedback wheel/pedals/shifter (old G25 here and the Simraceway wheel - surprisingly precise handheld wheel you don't mount to anything)
  • Xbox one controllers
  • Steam controllers
  • X-Arcade/NES/whatever emulation controllers
  • Leap Motion
  • Charging stations and rechargeable batteries
  • Locomotion options like Omni (Virtuix still hasn't shown up yet) / PocketStrafe / Wii balance board w/ GlovePie hacks

You might want a good recording setup with mixed reality support as well.

    e: stuff I forgot

  • Transducer like a buttkicker for tactile feedback in seated experiences (mine is a DIY) / Subpac wearable for standing

u/MikeBScott · 1 pointr/Vive

I pre-ordered the vive yesterday and just realised I do not have anywhere to mount the lighthouses, and cannot drill holes in the walls (rented accomodation). After a little bit of research I think I have found a relatively cost effective way to purchase two tripods and ball head brackets from Amazon.co.uk.

I have Amazon prime, so the items I chose included free one day delivery (I am not sure what the non-prime delivery charges will be)

The tripods I have purchased extend up to 2M (78") are being sold as a pair for £18.88:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00899801A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01

I purchased two of these 1/4" tripod ball brackets for £6.99 each:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eggsnow-Tripod-Bracket-Holder-Ballhead/dp/B00L23XN9O/ref=sr_1_6?s=photo&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1456881505&sr=1-6&keywords=1%2F4%22+tripod+ball

Total cost: £32.86

Note:
The description of the tripod does not specify what the thread size is, but these are the best price I could find. Someone mentioned they have a 1/4" thread size in the comments, but I cannot confirm this until I receive delivery on 3rd March. (Worst case will be the need to purchase a couple of adapters.)

Hope this helps others who are trying to find a cost effective way to mount the lighthouses.

EDIT:
The tripods and ball brackets arrived today. I can confirm the tripod uses the standard 1/4" connector and fit the ball sockets perfectly.
Also, they seem fairly study, so I expect no problems with the lighthouses attached.
I can recommend these to others who are considering a tripod solution to the lighthouse mounting.

Sorry I should probably update that post, I tested out another one and it was much better then the KlearKare ones,

here's an update I posted in a reply on the rift forum,

"As posted in the Vive reddit, this is what I got for my Vive, I don't know what the exact size for the rift lens are though but for the vive, 49mm and 50mm works best. And yes they do curve with the lens too
http://www.amazon.com/Healingshield-Watch-Protector-Guard-1-97in/dp/B00SJ22D1K - imo the better version, more clear and not a wet application, you also get 3 - downside, longer shipping time since it ships from international location.

http://www.amazon.com/KlearKare-Invisible-Protector-Military-Protection/dp/B00BUJ354I - also very good but is a wet application and you need to squeegee the water out properly or it'll remain blurry in areas - you get 2
After 2 weeks with kleaarkare first, I decided to buy the healingshield version above to compare it to and the healing shield one was more clear IMO."

If you want cheap and good, this combination works well:

Cosmos Black Color Velvet Replacement Earpad Ear Pad Cushion for AKG K 240

Superlux HD668B Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones

Ultimately I decided I like the earbuds routed through the headstrap better, but these sounded pretty good. They are 56ohm, so they will be a little quieter than your 39 ohm LGs. That said, some people are using 250ohm headsets and that has to have a pretty low volume unless you can turn it up high enough in the game.

The cable on the HD668B also breaks away easily if you tug on it and it comes with a nicely sized shorter cable you can use too.

u/rudedog8 · 1 pointr/Vive

TL;DR Cheap HDM lippage solution
If anyone has been in Rec Room Dodgeball or tried Out of Ammo, HDM slippage can be a problem especially if you are using a modded face cushion, i.e. sleep mask. Two solutions, one is tear apart an old bicycle helmet and use the rear strap for an adjustable fit. While this worked well for me, when I demoed I would run into a person now and then that wasn't comfortable with it. I needed a softer more elegant solution. Holy shit, it was right under our noses. I kept the straps I had cut off of this mask ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0142TUPE0 ) slipped it through the buckles on the Vive and viola, a beautiful, comfortable, adjustable, and CHEAP solution. I can attest it works well and I will trim and fine tune the ends on the buckle side to have a more elegant and fixed attachement. Hope this has some value to the community that has given me an incredible amount of value.

u/Whirlmeister · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, it comes with controllers.

I found some over-ear headphones were uncomfortable because of the headstrap for some people, but the majority of people I've demoed for have had no problems. On-ear headphones may be a better option, and if its just for you the supplied ear buds are actually surprisingly good.

Depending on your room and whether you are happy to screw the lighthouse sensors to the wall you may need some sort of mount.

I was happy to screw the sensor mounts to the wall at home but I picked up

A couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wolfcraft-4042000-80mm-Telescopic-Support/dp/B001BWT2PA/ref=sr_1_2

and a couple of these
https://www.amazon.co.uk/MyArmor-Universial-Threaded-Microphone-Motorcycles/dp/B01A6KJDFG/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_2

So I could bring the Vive places with me and demo (without having to screw anything to the wall).

Alternatively if you want to attach the sensors to a bookshelf or similar these are great:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phot-R-Studio-Multi-Function-Reflector-Cameras/dp/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=pd_bxgy_60_img_3

I also ended up getting a 3m HMDI extention and a 3m USB extension because my play area is a few meters from my PC and out of the box you only get 1m cables to the breakout box.

u/skweejal · 11 pointsr/Vive

Man, you asked a question that will only get you "Senheissers only" style answers. So, I'm gonna try to hit all of your concerns with 1 (well 2) products.

Superlux 681 or 668b

I have a pair of Superlux 681.

  1. They are tight but comfortable. They will have a slight amount of jiggle with really fast head movements, but these things will be hard to fling off of your noggin. The ear pads are pretty terrible, but they are interchangeable with the AKG 240 headphone pads. I would highly recommend swapping those out. Here are the ones I bought.

  2. They sound amazing for the price. Seriously, the audio will take a shit on 95% of those "gaming" headphones that tout "True 360 degree surround sound" bollocks. The 681 are a tad bit tinny, but you will hardly notice unless you're an audiophile. The 668bs are much less tinny if you find the 681 having too much treble.

  3. Easy to take off and easy to handle. They weigh about 250g so they are pretty light. Easy to handle.

  4. Here's the kicker, they cost me $30 on amazon.

"Mate" you must be thinking, "You're pullin my fuckin' chain, these must be shit". I'm not, your chain is not being pulled. These aren't the "Best headphones for under $30", these might just be the best headphones for under $150. The sound you get out of them is comparable to some seriously high end shit. Ignore the SteelSeries, Razer, and Sennheiser status quo. This is the first place you should look.
u/bluuit · 4 pointsr/Vive

Alright, here's a few simple things. Nothing very exciting, but I wouldn't go without them now.

The basestations are suppose to have like a 50k hour lifespan. Still, I had one of the rotors die and replaced under warranty. Now I use a remote switch like this one to conveniently shut down the lighthouses when not in use and extend their life. Also helpful if the IR interferes with anything.

Similarly, unplugging and plugging in the vive controllers to charge every use could eventually wear out the usb sockets. I use a pair of magnetic usb adapters similar to these which takes away that wear and tear, plus they are reversible and just snap in place super easy.

My basestations are screwed into the wall, but I also have a pair of these clamps which have been very useful and versatile when I've taken my Vive to demo at friends places, or the office. Makes it quick and easy to clamp them to a bookcase, curtain rod, door frame, drop ceiling grid, or whatever. Much better than the giant wobbly stands many people go for.

u/GingerMess · 1 pointr/Vive

Because I'm in the process of clearing stuff out of my house in preparation for moving, I opted to use camera tripods for the tracking stations. Here's a picture of one.

The tripods that I bought were these ones from Amazon UK. At the time they had a 2x 3m option for £22, but that seems to have disappeared now. I also grabbed two of these to allow angling of the tracking stations, otherwise they're fixed facing parallel to the floor.

Some notes after setting up the Vive and using them for a 4 hour session of Audioshield:

  • Tracking is perfect without jitter.
  • Mounting them is easy with the items I linked above, although I suggest you mount before extending the tripod otherwise you're manhandling a 7-foot pole (ooer).
  • The tripods wobble a bit on carpet after you're done mounting, this is fine. They'll stop wobbling and to be honest given the top-heavy setup, I'm surprised how little they wobble. I haven't noticed any wobbling while I've been using the Vive.
  • It might well be the case that having carpet dampens the shocks from moving around in the room - having tripods on a wooden floor would probably result in them vibrating to every footstep. I can't be certain of this though.

Overall I recommend tripods unless you're ok with wall mounting. They work well. Just get decent quality ones!

No worries man I had a hard time understanding all this at first too. I thought the exact same thing btw. "I do notice a difference with 7.1 yadda yadda". I didn't understand until I actually got "real" headphones. And its a hard thing to accept especially if you have 7.1 headphones next to you that you've spent money on and like. No one wants to think they made a bad choice and I'm not saying you did necessarily, thats just what I went through. But anyway.. the same rule applies to music recorded in binaural (in the 2nd link... pay close attention to what happens to the audio when the singers swing behind you at 1:05, turn off 7.1 again).

You have two speakers on those cans. Its literally impossible to improve upon that unless the source itself was recorded with binaural in mind. You can't make two channels magically turn into 7 in real time. And when you have multiple drivers inside your headphones your ear can't make the difference between speakers that close together. And also you end up having multiple bad smaller speakers capable of audio that isn't that good anyway. So what's the benefit? So again. Until you try actual quality headphones get the "I definitely like 7.1 in stuff" out of your head because I'm telling you once you try good ones you're going to be amazed. What you're likely hearing is an EQ when you turn on 7.1 mode. It emphasis the lows and highs to make whatever you're hearing sound 'better' but its fake quality.

I promise that if you messed around with an EQ on "nice" headphones you'd also make those sound better than they did before too (assuming you like screwing around with EQ, a lot of audiophile people think its blasphemy to screw around with what the artist originally intended or to screw around with the design aspects of headphones. I personally think its not a huge deal but I also don't like messing with anything)

Tldr: What you're likely hearing is an EQ with 7.1 mode and you can do that with any pair of headphones. If the source isn't binaural you can't make it binaural by flipping a switch. You're turning on an EQ.

Honestly the only way to test it for yourself is to try a pair of good headphones for the first time. And luckily enough you don't need to spend a ton of money to try your first real pair. I got my fiance the Superlux 668b's this Christmas. She previously had wireless Logitech headphones. They're gathering dust now... The Superlux headphones are amazing for the price. Even I couldn't believe the quality. Years of conditioning has taught me that "good" headphones needed to cost a lot. But nope... Just damn good marketing from the people that make crap. Thats all it is.

Edit - If you do get the Superlux I'd also get replacement earpads as the ones they come with should be considered place holders. Also the video you linked is mostly all true.

u/acherem13 · 3 pointsr/Vive

Welding headgear- any should do if you happen to have one laying around, but you want to make sure it has 2 straps over the top instead of just 1 which you find with the cheaper ones. It provides more distributed support. This one should do. I use this one, but the one I found for you just seems better.

.

3D printable adapter piece that connects the Vive to the Welding mask. If you do not have access to a 3D printer this job may cost you ~$15-20.

.

That's it, all you would need to do it cut off the front piece of the mask so the sides are flush and use some zipties or velcro to attach the cable coming from the HMD to at least one of the 2 straps on your head for further stability. Overall the price to purchase everything fresh would probably lean around $40-45. If you feel the integrated headphones are worth if for the extra $55 + HTC Shipping then go for the DAS, for me though it was a non-issue.

EDIT: If you need pictures of my setup I can post them, but once you get the parts it's pretty intuitive what you need to do.

u/dragoonjefy · 2 pointsr/Vive

For under $50, you can't go wrong with:

Superlux HD668B headsets. They are very lightweight, and from every single review I've read online or seen on youtube, they compete with $150-$200 studio headphones. In music, the 'treble' can be a little rough for some people, it can be very crisp. But in gaming, they've said this isn't an issue and makes for an INCREDIBLE soundstage in-game. Also, they come with a small 3ft cable AND a longer cable; the 3ft cable is perfect for jacking into the vive.

Everyone suggests You also pick up Velour replacement pads as the pads that come stock leave a lot to be desired and may be uncomfortable. Luckily, placing them both in your Amazon cart brings your total to JUST AT $49 and some change, which nets you FREE SHIPPING as well. So you're better off grabbing the pads :) /thread

u/likwidtek · 25 pointsr/Vive

LOL, come on HTC. I mean I love my Vive so much but either Valve should subsidize or HTC needs to lower their price. The Vive is amazing, but at $400, the rift is good enough. Tack on another $100 or so for an additional sensor and some wall mounts and extension cables or whatever and while you can't get 5m x 5m play area, you could at least get a real good 360 rug scale experience.

HTC needs to come down in price man. It's not twice as good as the rift. Better, but not twice as good.

Well first off build yourself a top of the line pc with the new i7-7700k and GTX 1080 (or if money really isn't an issue get a GTX Titan XP and upgrade it to the 1080 Ti when it comes out lol).

Then make sure you have enough room. I only have 1.7 x 2.2m and it works great, but you can get up to 3x3m and over if you have the space.

The cord isn't too bad in most games, you will learn to just step over it. Certain games like Holopoint and Racket NX will have you spinning and getting tangled, but you can download a program called Advanced OpenVR Settings that will tell you how many spins you made in a certain direction so you can spin the other way ingame.

You will have a lot of add-ons to buy in a few months - Wireless (TPCast) , Hi5 Gloves , deluxe audio strap for added comfort , VR15 Rifle Accessory

And I 100% suggest that you buy a few of these sleep masks, cut out the middle, and use them as faceplate cushions instead of the default one, they are way more comfortable.

And get a box of these to wipe your lenses :P

Great thread and thanks for sharing! I'm ordering some of what you listed.. :)

Here is what I have already purchased and am using:

Mini tripods for the base stations as I haven't set them up permanently yet:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006I1KQQI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Wireless headset so I don't have to deal with the audio cable:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZC3S72I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Active HDMI cable as I'm running off my PC from the bedroom in my livingroom:

Anything that has like a spring that pulls back the line can work. ive seen people use those retractable lanyards or retractable dog leashes

Just a hook wouldnt work as the point is that the device "feeds you" cable when needed and takes it back when you dont.

I bought these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M6EB8DM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also, Here is a sketch of my play area, and you can see where i put the hooks.

https://i.imgur.com/tfzMhYZ.png

Also if you get the DAS (which i strongly recommend) here is a couple of pics on how i setted up the cables on the headset itself (just make sure they come out the back)

https://i.imgur.com/GDN03Tf.jpg

And just in case you decide to get the ceiling cable management i posted, i found out that doubling or tripling the retractable hooks gave me more freedom of movement, basically i feel the cable pulling me way less with more than 1 hook, like so: https://i.imgur.com/3sATB80.jpg

Also, if you use the ceiling things, id recommend cutting a couple of "stoppers" out of cardboard, these helped me A LOT because from time to time the hooks would join up, or change places and make it unconfortable, these "limits" fixed that by limiting where the hook movements.

I flip my bed up (no headboard). Went from worrying about 2m x 1m to eventually 2.4x2.4 ish moving stuff around. Easy to do in 2 mins once you figure out the routine. Even though I have the space, I ended up getting a steering wheel+pedals for racing games. Bought a HOTAS too but haven't used it yet. Games like DiRT Rally and iRacing are really fun. I wasn't even into simracing until VR came around. Lighthouses are needed for tracking, all the time, yes. The recommended roomscale size is assuming you have nothing in the way from floor to ceiling. The lighthouses will work in small spaces for sure.

I use these in my room, and whenever I bring my rig over to people's houses. Easy to just extend them from floor to ceiling. https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-1-support-cargo-bar-66172.html.

Then I use these and just clip onto the bar https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AMXMV3O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/TehRawk · 1 pointr/Vive

I'm not sure how well that config file thing would work. If the lighthouses move at all, you will get some messed up things happening. Like floating or being under the floor. It would be impossible to mount the lighthouses exactly after moving them. I am sure this is a good solution for those who dont move their lighthouses, but have to move furniture to switch between roomscale and seated. Doing the roomscale/seated setup doesn't take very long.

I have the permanent mounts in my bedroom. I use camera stands for mounting in the sitting room. There are a few options for this, as the holes for mounting, are the same size as standard camera mounts. If you have somewhere to attach them, these clamps work quite well. Or these gorillapods are handy too. You can leave the piece that clicks into place, attached to the lighthouses. So they literally take 1 second to remove.

I leave the wall mounting bracket, that come with the Vive, attached to the back of the lighthouses when I move them. So I just unscrew them from the wall. This seems safer to me, than rotating the entire lighthouse to remove it from the bracket. Less chance of dropping them. There is also a screw hole in the bottom of the lighthouse, where another mounting solution can be attached. This is where I attach the camera stands.

The lighthouses can be mounted upside down, and function perfectly.

Please let me know if everything looks good!

Also, for the Vive, I'm planning on purchasing light stands to hold the trackers. I'm currently planning on:

- StudioPRO Set of Two 7'6" Photography Light Stands with Carrying Bag for Photo & Video Studio

-
MDW 2 PACK Tripod Mini Ball Head for HTC VIVE Holder,Camera Camcorder

Are those good choices?
u/nonsensepoem · 2 pointsr/Vive

So far I've had perfect success with this light stand and this attachment. I extend the legs completely which then take up a relatively small area, and I secure the legs with the two strong rubber bands that came with the attachments. The footprint is a triangle of about 1' (30.48 cm) per side.

u/phimath · 1 pointr/Vive

Don't think it would stop ribbons from coming loose, but I use these and they at least stop scuffs and scratches both on my walls and on the controllers as well. I'm sure they absorb a little bit of the impact in larger hits, but I doubt its anything substantial.

They are a great product though. I got them in white with for the HMD to match, and they both fit perfectly and look dope too.

u/DeathTag · 0 pointsr/Vive

In terms of sticky tape, mine fell off 2 hours after installing the lighthouses and pulled a bit of the paint along too :( I just bought 2 long tripods which work perfectly. You could get some off of amazon easily or take your lighthouse to a camera store near you and fit it on some tripods and see which ones you like!
EDIT: These seem good and are pretty cheap too.

These are the ball mounts I use:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M07M9D4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I don't have issues with them but they aren't my permanent solution. I bought them because I take my Vive to a lot of different places so it nice as a mobile solution. The ball mounts are great but I'm not use how the stands would do over long periods of time. But for now, they are perfect. They do however come with little draw strings bags that are pretty shitty.

I have the Superlux HD668B they have a really great sound for the price. The ear pads need to be exchanged to be comfortable, luckily these fit.
Edit: forgot to mention: They have a male 3,5 audiojack on the left cup. and a 1m cable is included, which makes it really convenient to use the the vive.

Got my vive about 2 weeks ago and have been pounding away trying to get the tech kinks removed so I can reliably record and stream it. Figured I'd share some of my personal issues and my fixes for them.

First off my tech specs.

AMD Threadripper 1950x
32 gigs of Gskills 3600 ram
1080 GTX
HTC Vive + Audio strap

First issue I ran into was being able to reliably capture the video in OBS. The monitor usually displays a stretch image that doesnt easily conform to 1920x1080. You can mirror the display but then you are looking at 2 eyes and thats even worse.

This plugin allows you to use the mirrored eyes, strip one, and then make that perfectly fit 1920x1080.

Another issue is being able to see twitch chat while playing. Sure you can open up desktop mode but reading that can be a pain in the ass.

Twitch chat overlay fixed that. You can place chat on a hand or in the world, makes it convenient and limits immersive breakage.

Only other issues Im having that make recording a struggle is audio issues (2 mics and 2 headsets), No access to stream deck, no easy access to streamlabs, and cable management.

I'm trying a pulley system attached to the ceiling but I still somehow manage to get caught up in there still in Pavlov and Robo Recall... really any game that requires fast 360's with your body and not controllers.

Any of you found a way to get streamlabs, streamdeck, or cable management on 360's would love to hear it!

Cant wait till HTC releases their wireless setup. Hope that is solid.

u/contactgus · 1 pointr/Vive

Yes, those are the third hand poles that I didn't want to spend the money on, I didn't realise that they were not spring loaded. I was also thinking of the marks left by the pressure so I am considering using rubber pads on the feet. I have a pack of these lying around: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007J6VKU2
If I remove slippery part I'll be left with 4 thick rubber pads that I can use.

Of course it all depends on whether the poles themselves will be stable enough and I'm not feeling too confident :)

As for the camera mount itself, I bought something like the recommended ones in a local shop but the shop keeper also showed me something like this which might be useful for a temporary solution or for transferring to a seated area where the lighthouse doesn't have to be held up too high (on a shelf or something):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MR0VPOQ

If I do end up using command strips I might use a secondary command strip and somehow tie a leash between it and the main mount. I might do that anyway to have a secondary anchor

u/Undergallows · 3 pointsr/Vive

There are covers you can get.

They'll protect against scuffs, but obviously if you smash the thing hard enough you might just snap the plastic. I find the best way to avoid this sort of stuff is to just not go completely wild with my movement. There's also an application called [OpenVR Advanced Settings] (https://github.com/matzman666/OpenVR-AdvancedSettings) that lets you customize chaperone boundaries. It lets you adjust chaperone height, which might be helpful in giving you an idea of how high the ceiling is. .

u/Psycold · 1 pointr/Vive

Yep. Sounds like the hub is being overloaded. I don't use a USB hub at all but I do use a good quality extension cable, this one specifically: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I plug one end directly into a USB 2.0 port on my PC and plug the breakout box into the other end. I use this HDMI cable going from my video card to the back of the breakout box:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0186DNFLI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(Must be active like this cable)

Zero issues with this setup and I have my Vive connected from my office computer to my living room.

I use this tripod, but it does come with two tripods. Maybe you could find a solo elsewhere, but having two allows you to take your Vive to somewhere and set it up for demos. Did that at a friend's house a few months ago and it worked great.

Also make sure you have a mount of some kind to make sure your lighthouse can be positioned accordingly.

Try different USB ports or external PCIE USB card. My friend has similar issue like you and he added a PCIE USB card and that solved his issue. Good luck.

Thanks for linking the Harbor Freight poles. They are half the price of the ones I've seen used elsewhere. I chose to get these clamps because they have better reviews and should be able to fit on smaller poles. With luck I'll be able to clamp to the silver top part of the bar hopefully making it sturdier and lower profile for transport.

There are tons of posts about headphones in this subreddit, so I've tried to take into account all the most important features discussed to find the perfect pair. /r/Vive seems to suggest that headphones, particularly if you would ever like to demo the Vive, should have these qualities:

  • Lightweight
  • Open-backed
  • Comfortable
  • Secure on your head, even with wild movement
  • Fit people with glasses
  • Good quality audio
  • Short cable for easy management
  • Not get icky

I've found that PortaPros do all of that, and have avoided drawbacks with choosing either earbuds or larger headphones. Plus, they are extremely easy to recable. I have some paracord shipping my way and I will be posting instructions on how to get it done. If anyone else is interested but can't recable, I might be able to put together one for you once I affirm that the plug I'm using doesn't get in the way of anything.

EDIT: shoutout to /u/Nippy_Kangaroo, who also has mentioned this pair.

I needed the exact same thing. This is what I went with from amazon. They work great. One is the set of the tripods and the other is the mini ball head you will need for each lighthouse with the tripod.

I would also recommend extending the triple cable an extra 10 feet. You won't be able to keep the cable and HMD in the box after adding the cables, but it doesn't get tangled as easy and just works better when having other people try it for the first time.

Does anyone with the GelShell controller skins have a comment on whether they improve gameplay (i.e. feel better, controller easier to grip, etc)?

I don't care about looks and I'm not worried about my controllers getting scuffed, but I would consider buying if you think tactilely they feel better than original controller?

Another vote for the Koss PortaPros. They sound excellent and most importantly, they are very light weight and have a tiny footprint. I practically feel like I'm using the Oculus Rift CV1 when I'm wearing them. They also fit very snug and I never have to worry about them flying off my head.

Hey guys! I'm moving to college dorm in about a month, and I'm thinking about how to mount my lighthouses (obviously can't drill in a dorm). Right now I'm using one of these tripod clamps for each lighthouse, clamped onto shelves on opposite corners of my room, which has worked very well!

However, I won't have anything for these clamps to clamp onto, so I was thinking of a workaround of sorts: to use the clamps I currently have, clamping onto a few of those sticky wall hooks which say they should hold the weight (up to 6.6 pounds which is immense). Do you think this would work? If not, is there a potentially less-ghetto solution which leaves a very little footprint?

TL;DR: Will sticky wall hooks support tripod clamps for a nice lighthouse setup in a college dorm?

u/JoeReMi · 1 pointr/Vive

Awesome - that's the acid test really! I got a pair of Koss Porta Pros https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00001P4ZH/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1465069306&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=koss+-+portapro&dpPl=1&dpID=41rYOdxtBmL&ref=plSrch. Removed the headband, and the mechanism for comfort on the 'phones can be hooked straight over the vive headstrap. I had Velcro on it, but removed it to make it easier to adjust for others. Like you, I forget it's on, and others don't mention it at all. I think the best bit is that people used to always try to take off the vive first (so headphones usually fell). No longer a problem!

Because you are living in a rental, use something like this instead:

https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Aluminum-Tripod-Stands-Softboxes-6-23/dp/B003I6ENXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511914647&sr=8-3&keywords=lighting+tripod

I mounted mine on those, allowing me to put them away or move them easily. I also use the cable to pair them instead of fiddling with getting perfect line of sight. It will give you a lot less headaches, and a lot more play time.

u/Gingaskunk · 2 pointsr/Vive

There really isn't any benefit at all in using the official power adapters. FWIW I have one of THESE between my official adapter and each of my base stations so I can physically turn them off on the wires I keep set up in my home.

I also have 2 each of THESE to power the base stations when I take my set up off-site to run demos and they work perfectly. I also use 2 of THESE to extend the reach of the after market cables, in case there isn't an outlet right by the base station.

I've used these parts since I first got my Vive (I was in the first batch of pre-orders) and it works great!

u/nw15062 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Hi,
I wanted to share my creation, my original Vive head strap started to come apart so I sent it out to be warranty replaced, in the meantime I bought a welding mask headgear from amazon. Removed the front strap and 3d printed some left right bracket.

This unit allows for depressing a button on each side and removing the HMD by pulling it forward from the face, quick release essentially, leaving the head strap on your head while removing the HMD. also the knobs on the side can be loosened and the whole thing can flip up onto my forehead.

I have the STL files for 3d printing if anyone is interested I have posted them because I am continuing to make fine modifications.

I'm happy to hear that you made good progress figuring things out!

I happen to have the Logitech G29 wheel, which is the PS4 version of the G920. I had similar problems to what you were describing. The issues were solved by also plugging the wheel into the same USB PCIe card I mentioned. Here it is on Amazon, though it appears to be out of stock right now (and possibly no longer available from Amazon). Note that this card is recommended by Oculus, Valve, and HTC for users having USB troubles.

Here's hoping you get some good VR time in and get your wheel working in conjunction. These issues are frustrating, but the experience is absolutely magical and totally worth the similar amount of effort I put in resolving my own issues.

Here's the set up I use and like it very much. I looked at the light stands too, but didn't want the feet on the stand protruding into my play space. They have worked great and have had no issue. You may be able to find shorter ones, but I have high ceilings and had to go with these.

You can get shorter ones from Harbor Freight for a lot cheaper. They just weren't long enough for my ceilings. The one from Amazon is much sturdier too.

Just a heads up, the Amazon link you posted doesn't ship to the US.

Here are a few options for US folk (I haven't tried either of these, just FYI so can't speak for quality)

NEEWER® Multi-function Spring Clamp Clip Holder Mount with Ball Head w/ standard 1/4" Screw for SLR, Digital SLR, Video cameras

SUPON Multi-function Tripod Camera Clip Clamp Flash Holder Mount with 360 Swivel Photography Ball-Head 1/4" Threaded Screw for Camera Tripod, SLR, DSLR, Video Cameras,Studio Backdrop Camera

Personally I recommend some lightstands and ballheads, if you have the space they are great and very portable.

I'm using spring clamp mount. Works very well. Can clip on to all kinds of stuff. Got one on top of a small step ladder and the other on top of a wardrobe door. Have had perfect tracking even though they are at different heights. Cheap as well.

Except for maybe a few exceptions, any headphones worth it will cost just as much, if not more, than the deluxe audio strap. I say wait and get that.

However, I have done the welder strap mod and integrated some Koss Porta Pros. They are surprisingly good, and cheap. They would fit over the standard strap fine.

Thanks for sharing

I was printing the cups, but on about 70% it broke (Y axe not calibrated properly, moved the whole part from the spot so i had to stop)
I have to recalibrate my printer and try it again.

I suggest using duct tape. Its what im using for my current stock. Or buy those silicone covers, should work great too (heard from Protubevr creator he tested and they work as good as the ones with it).

Have you banged it against a wall, dropped it, or otherwise collided it with a physical object at all? I've seen other users posting that after banging it together they determined that a ribbon cable in the controller had been broken lose by the impact.

When they removed the casing though HTC said that they voided their warranty. So I wouldn't disassemble it if I were you. Just a potential to consider.

Another thing to try is another USB port (Get the Inateck USB 3.0 PCI card if you have a free PCI card slot).

Here's the link for that:

Without any insight into what you have for hardware though, I would venture to bet it is the USB port you may be using.

u/wescotte · 2 pointsr/Vive

Chances are you'll want to angle them down for optimal coverage. You can mount them directly into concrete/brick. Just drill with a masonry bit and use anchors.

However, as another user pointed out if you are putting up shelves and they are wood you could just attach the mounting bracket right to the shelving or purchase a clamp mount like this, this or this. The bolt size is a 1/4 20 which is the standard for consumer cameras tripod mounts so you can find tons of mounting options out there.

If you search a bit you can find tons of mounting alternative threads like this.

Cut that into roughly the shape of the standard wide face mask (big C shape) and it will fit the Vive perfectly and also stick to the velcro, took me 2 minutes to do. Once you have it on, move the bottom ends of the sleep mask that rest on your cheek bones lower and out of the way of the bottom of the Vive lenses, it makes a significant difference as well. Also try to have the face mask pad lining on the outside edge of the velcro strip around the face seal of the Vive, leaving plenty of room around the lenses for your face to fit in and for your eyes to get close to the lenses. It makes for a very immersive FOV, closest to DK1 I have gotten in a long time.

Bluetooth used to work to turn mine off, but stopped working at some point.

Someone said that the manual recommended these, so I bought them and they've been good.

u/Celsian · 1 pointr/Vive

I have these in white

You have no idea how many times you'll bang them together trying to pull the pin out of a grenade. Just buy them. Much less frequently I hit myself in the HMD, these are perfect for softening those blows as well. I also don't recommend any other brands as I've never tried them and these had the best reviews when I got them.

One press of a button - done. BTW: I don´t have a good feeling that my HMD is always warm - even when turned off. So i will use this for the powerplug of the VIVE also.

u/TrptJim · 2 pointsr/Vive

If you want 50ft HDMI I can confirm that this cable works perfectly, camera turned on and everything, for only a couple bucks more than the OP's cable. I'm using this extender for linkbox power and two of these extenders for the lighthouses.

It really is nice to move your setup to a much bigger play space, and being able to extend so far is really handy.

u/iop90 · 2 pointsr/Vive

Honestly, there's really no way to tell if a card will work with the Vive well or not. If it's an aftermarket 3.0 or 3.1 card, chances are good, but I had an Anker USB 3.0 card whose controller was incompatible. If you can, the Inateck is guaranteed by both Oculus and HTC to perform well.

I noticed your link was a UK website. If you need to buy this card in the UK, here is a link on Amazon for my exact card.

u/kayonesoft · 1 pointr/Vive

I bought a pair of these cables to extend the power cables for my lighthouses since they were too far away from any power outlets. (At first I used battery packs, but those proved to be flaky).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018RW057K

What I would REALLY like is something like the JacobsParts Manual Inline DC Power Switch for the Lighthouses, rather than for the HMD power line, that way I can go and flip the switches rather than unplugging them every time I'm done. I use those remote power switches for other things in the house and I'd rather not have overlapping signals.

Used these headphones. Got the idea from another post. I am still going to do the full magnetic setup so they'll be more adjustable, but for now they are just zip-tied to the strap and work perfectly for my head.

u/fragger56 · 3 pointsr/Vive

I used these https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BUJ354I/ back before the Hyperkin ones came to market, they are wet application so in my experience are easier to apply without dust /air bubbles underneath.

I gave them a quick trim with some scissors before applying as well and now I can't even tell they are there.

Its probably better to put the protectors on the Vive rather than your glasses, as if you ever let someone else with glasses use it, their glasses wouldn't have said protectors on and would scratch your vive.

u/ViciousMoth · 1 pointr/Vive

Specifically, look into light stand tripods (instead of regular camera tripods) because they will be cheaper and lighter since they don't need to hold the weight of a heavy camera, but are more than fine for the base stations. This one is 6 feet, but they also have 8-9 feet versions available. If you search r/Vive/ for Neewer, I'm sure you'll find a few of us who went this route. You'll just want to buy a couple of 1/4" ball mount to attach to the ends of these light stands. EDIT: Conveniently at the 'frequently bought together' section.

I bought these wireless, remote controlled switches so I can switch the base stations off and on with the remote (and because the buttons are re-assignable I only need a single on-off-pair). Works perfectly fine for me and a lot faster and reliable than the bluetooth standby mode.

I've successfully created a 10 ft (~2m??) extension beyond the break out box. Total cost was under $50. I have a 3.2m x 3.5m or so area and I have more than enough space. One thing I'd note is that the HDMI cable extension is HEAVY/THICK. After I put all the extension cables through the mesh casing, it makes the cable paclage very rigid. I have an even worse prescription than you, around -10. I wear my glasses in my Vive and it works just fine.

Just make sure you adjust the lens distance all the way back before you put it on! You can pop out a dial on each side where the strap system connects, and then turn it to bring the lenses closer and further. I didn't realize that when I first put it on, and I think I put a scratch on the inner side of one of the lenses, thankfully where it's completely invisible when wearing the headset...

If you're worried about scratching the lenses with your glasses, I ended up picking up these watchface screen protectors that fit over the lenses quite well and don't disrupt the image quality (it's a 2-pack, so you don't need to buy two packages): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BUJ354I

u/Andythefan · 2 pointsr/Vive

I have something like the clamp you listed at the bottom of your post. It actually works really well and is much more minimal and portable than a tripod. I have mine clamped on a tallish lamp in the corner of my room and it works fine.

here's the one I ordered (only $9)

u/heartcall · 1 pointr/Vive

I think the lighthouses might vibrate too much for a suction cup. Also, I can think of other things that vibrate and have a suction cup, maybe you don't want your lighthouses to resemble those in any way.

edit: Also, my experience with suction cups on car gadgets is they always vibrate loose eventually.

I use these, with some cheap $8 ball mounts. https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Aluminum-Tripod-Stands-Softboxes-6-23/dp/B003I6ENXS/

They've been fine so far, but I haven't moved them around or set them up multiple times, so I don't know if they'd hold up to travel. Probably not, at that price. I'm positive the cheap ball mounts would never handle being set up and adjusted too many times.

u/bradsears · 2 pointsr/Vive

I already posted this in viveforsale. Hopefully this minor cross post is allowed.

The mod is made from a miller headgear (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00826AM7A/ref=cm_sw_su_dp) and a 3d printed part: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1696706
I thought it would flip up like a welder's headgear. It does not and I don't use it. Looking for a good home and will consider a wide rage of trades. I'm in Toronto.
The 3d print is visually a bit crude where it connects to the headset as you can see in the photos. The connection is solid and works perfectly. PM me

u/spblue · 1 pointr/Vive

I bought these tripods for $22 USD ($31 CAD). They work perfectly. I had bought some adapters so that I could tilt the lighthouses, but they were shipped separately and came a bit later. It turned out that the lighthouses don't need to be tilted, at least not at 6 and a half feet high. They were able to track the floor when screwed straight on top of the tripods without any problem.

If you're on a budget they're a great option. The disadvantage is the floor estate. I'd say they use up about 2 feet of floor space under each tripod.

u/bsman1011 · 6 pointsr/Vive

Pretty much just this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1696706 and the miller headgear from cyberweld (amazon has it but its like 10 bucks more when I ordered) then add kross porta pro and a couple guess drills because the hole on that bracket is terrible for me... pretty simple

I do yes.

I've acctually got two of these cards: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Superspeed-Ports-PCI-E-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481614227&sr=8-1&keywords=inateck+usb+3

I had weird stuttering problems when using these cards for the sensors though (I didn't do massive tests with this, just simply plugged them into the motherboard and restarted - it might have just been the restart required) but essentially I have the Oculus hardware plugged into my motherboard USB and everything else into these controllers.

I avoid using an external hub for the VR gear but I've got one hub that handles my VR cockpit/racing gear which includes - Warthog HOTAS, MS FFB2, 2nd keyboard, 2nd mouse, rudder pedals, G25 racing wheel. I've also got a Blue Yeti microphone, usb headset/mic, webcam, gamepad and one of those keyboard gamepad things. Think that's it USB wise :)

I've got the Vive plugged into the HDMI on my 1080 and the Rift plugged into the DVI port with the DVI->HDMI adapter it came with.

Had the same issue (though on level 30 >.<). Here's now I fixed it:

I purchased 10' extensions for the HDMI/USB/Audio cables and then (this is key) wrapped them in these.

A costly upgrade but I haven't had a single wire issue since. You still get wrapped up if you're not careful but it's easy enough between rounds to see which way you need to turn during the next round to undo it.

I also have mini clamps that I attach to the top of the door or to the stairs balusters when I'm downstairs:

  • Clamps like this
  • Or like this

If you are really tight on space and cant use the flash stands, look into a pair of these, they are heavy-duty tension rods that go up to 12'.

If you havent you should probably buy a USB 3.0 hub for the vive. When i first got mine my motherboards USB 3.0's were causing tracking issues, the whole think was extremely wobbly, and I couldn't get my controllers to connect wireless with the 2.0's and was still having intermittent tracking issues.

I bought this one and it fixed the issues for me. This is the one that was suggested by valve (or i think it was valve and not htc anyways, no idea were to find the source). The only difference is the amount of ports, I just got the 4 port so i could plug my HOTAS in, which solved some issues i was having with those as well.

u/WthLee · 2 pointsr/Vive

take this one, it has a sata power connector https://www.amazon.ca/Inateck-SuperSpeed-Ports-PCI-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1539859403&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=inateck+usb

it additionally provides connected devices with enough power directly from the psu. the reason either one or the other device tracks on your vive is because all tracking data runs over a internal onboard usb hub inside the vive headset, tracking, camera, microphone and both watchmen receivers of your controllers run over it. if your usb bandwidth is to small, your usb controller begins to prioritize the device with the higher bandwidth requirement, and gives junks of free bandwidth to the rest. this works for file transfer and low bandwith use cases, but not for the tracking of 3 devices which have a continous data stream to maintain. if one of those gets throttled, the tracking just stops working, since lighthouse tracking is highly timing sensitive. providing more usb bandwidth is a surefire way to fix most tracking issues. you could try to turn off the vive camera first, and disconnect all usb devices like usb headsets, hard disks and thumbdrives, bluetooth and so on

I used black electrical tape to group the cables together after stretching them out and it works great. I accidentally made the usb to tight and occaisonally it pops out during transportation but rarely so if your going to group them together make sure they have enough slack.

There is also the Superlux HD668B. Although the 681 is 32 ohm and the 668 is 56 ohm, so the 681 will be louder.

Either way, you want to replace the ear pads with these.

That said, you don't need external headphones. Take the earbuds, route them over the top of your head and slip the wires for each earbud through the loop on each side of the headstrap.

This way the earbuds act like integrated headphones and dangle right there next to your ears. You can put them in and take them out as needed without them falling down or ever not being next to your ears.

I use these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M6EB8DM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have the cable running along the center of the ceiling about 1.5" from the ceiling itself so it doesn't interfere with the light I have up there. The cable itself is strapped to the headset strap at the point of the crown of my head (towards the back). If it's further up, it tends to feel like someone is pulling on a hat straight up. If it's further back, it tends to have too much slack and gets in the way.

I also use the new version (less stiff) of the cable. You want to make sure you leave some good slack. I have the breakout box on the wall itself. This way, the cable is entirely suspended from the ceiling. The computer has it's own set of cables that go up the wall into the breakout box.

Couple of things I do want to point out.

  1. If you are playing a game that forces you to cross each of your arms paths, there is a chance that the opposite arm's controller will get hooked onto the retractable lead (not the vive cable itself). This is bad because it will jerk your head if you make a swift action. I haven't had it happen too many times and I've had the setup for a year. The very few times I felt I got caught, I paused the game and fixed it.

  2. You will need to use some kind of cable tracking system in the vive that tracks rotations. Otherwise, the cable will begin to bind and pull on you a little bit. I use Turn Signal for this. Nice little VR overlay onto the floor showing you how many times you have spun around (rotating the cable).

Yea, I have one of the smallest gorillapods and used to use it for mounting a lighthouse. Obviously if you can get one of the legs wrapped around something then so much the better.

But if its going to become a common thing, get these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MR0VPOQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They happily clip onto shelves, doors, curtain rails etc and provide a good grip, I have no fear of them falling.

As mentioned by others: Lighting stands outside. Contractor (floor to ceiling) poles are less likely to wiggle inside if you have flexible floors.

...and not mentioned: shelf clamps where we can get away with it (works horizontal or vertical!) These let you fit all Vive bits in one camera bag.

It looks just like my system and it works well. I'm using mine with all 6 spread out.

Buy from amazon, it even has prime free shipping so you can get it to your door in less than 3 days!

This. I got 2 of these and they work like a dream.

Craigslist if your confident with it and that would get you the max amount for it (i live in Boston and can see a few of both around here).

Amazon also lets you sell stuff and i think video game related things they only take 8% vs Ebays 10%, but i dont even know if you can sell it on there right now or what restrictions they may have.

Edit: i guess you can on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Vive-Pc/dp/B00VF5NT4I/ref=sr_1_44?ie=UTF8&qid=1462371985&sr=8-44&keywords=htc+vive

Not sure of a proper way to post this buy if you go this this link, you can see availablity of Amazon Warehouse deals on HTC vive. It depends on your location, but they usually are at some discount. My area currently shows $399^90 "Used: acceptable"

Or you can just use the "departments" drop down, select "amazone Warehouse Deals" and Search for HTC Vive and it shows other things as well.

The below combination works to extend where your vive plugs in by 50 ft with no added latency (i use it). I'm not sure if the 100 ft would work as well.

Cat6 Snagless Ethernet Patch Cable in Black 50 Feet

IOGEAR USB 2.0 4-Port 164' USB Extender Over

Monoprice 50 ft Luxe Series CL3 Active High Speed Premium HDMI Cable

Edit: Total price is just over $100

Although I could always fix the Bluetooth power management for the basestations, I found these switches just made my life happier:

the foam really bothered my face as well. I switched to this memory foam sleep mask and find it so much more comfortable -

There's a wire harness system out there that holds the wires above your head. When you walk around they give the wires slack. When you walk back to the middle they pull the wires back up.

Just Google vive wire harness system or something.

Here are the light stands I use when I take the Vive out of the house to demo: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L4YR0BS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here are the ball heads I use on top of those stands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M07M9D4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have yet to have an issue with either, they stay in place well and they dont jiggle around.

I ordered my vive during the Christmas sale so it hasn't arrived yet. I'm in the same situation as you, in an apartment where I don't want to drill holes.

But I did a quick google search about our use case and found these.

combined with these

should work fine. Old reddit posts recommend these.

> I have a couple pair of noise cancelling headphones

If you plan on showing off the headset to others you might want some open headphones so people can hear you talk them through things while still hearing the game audio. I got tired of watching people constantly take my headphones on and off their ears to ask questions so I got some Koss ProtaPros. That's what I use too now because they sound surprisingly good, big over-ear headphones along with the headset makes for an excessive amount of stuff on your head, and I like being able to hear the doorbell and whatnot.

I'm in an apartment and don't want to put holes in the walls if I can help it.

I'm looking at these but not sure if I need additional hardware to mount the sensors.

edit: I have located a russian solution: https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/3LA_wO_fv_2p4pknYrQvlpLZg8A=/cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/6121549/Screen_Shot_2016-02-29_at_11.33.18_AM.0.png

A lot of people use these https://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro-Headphones-with-Case/dp/B00001P4ZH to mod their headsets. I don't mind the ones that come with it. I switch to overear ones when I'm demoing it to a bunch of friends. I find it more hygienic.

u/Catsrules · 1 pointr/Vive

O thank you so much, that is a great heads up.

From the links you provided a few people suggest some screen protectors, I might give them a try. They said it doesn't affect the video quality to bad.

I dont think its a USB3 issue, I think it an incompatible USB chipset issue. I had nothing but problems at first, USB3 wouldnt work at all, USB2 worked better but still major issues. I then installed the USB3 PCIe card recommended by valve and ALL issues were solved. I have no problems now at all.

edit: this is the card i got http://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Superspeed-Ports-PCI-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM

Here's what I've been using to sucessfully extend the distance between my computer and my vive:

     USB over Ethernet (with a 50ft cat6)
     https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013VP3372/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

     50ft Active HDMI
     https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0186DNFLI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Before this I tried using a passive HDMI cable which gave me a red light and blank display on the Vive but everything showed green in SteamVR.

u/B9AE2 · 3 pointsr/Vive

It might be better to go with something nicer than those. $14 for cheap plastic crap is kind of absurd, plus they have pretty bad reviews. I got these, and they're only $5 more each.

u/jamesbritt · 1 pointr/Vive

Got an email alert from Amazon telling me the Vive is now available for purchase. Turns out to be a reseller asking US $1,499.

Just how long is the current wait for new Vive orders? I pre-ordered mine the day HTC opened sales, and it arrived over a week ago.

There is a Like New going for $350 on amazon right now, what would you say about that?

I bought a ST-lab card

It gets the job done.

This is the setup I'm using right now. But damn that quick support rod is a really good idea. I would do that instead of this if possible. I would only consider the tripod "sturdy" if you can extend the legs all the way out, which might be difficult in a small college dorm/apartment
