I use my old 1TB WD Passport Slim for this purpose after I bought a 3TB WD Passport Ultra to replace it as my main external HDD.

This is the one I use in particular:
https://www.amazon.com/Passport-Portable-Metal-External-Backup/dp/B00EO302SO

I have the entire drive formatted as FAT32 and just use the standard Windows Explorer to transfer stuff too and from it. It works great and I've had no problems with it. So yeah a WD Passport drive would be just fine for use on the Wii. You would need a Y cable if you wanted to use it with a Wii U though.

You can't use an SDHC card you need an old school SD card (they only make these up to 2G). I personally got one of these. Follow the stickied guide on this subreddit. You don't need any emulators for Wii or Gamecube games or games that where sold on the Virtual console by Nintendo. There are emulators available if you want games not in those three list, but almost everything worth playing came out on the Virtual console and controller support is really good for them (classic pro or gamecube controller is the way to go for these. They are already mapped and everything).

The overview of the whole process is

  • Using MiiMod or something to trigger a buffer overflow to install BootMii and the Homebrew channel (This is what you launch all your hacked apps from)
  • loading up some homebrew apps onto your SD card (USB Loader GX, Nintendont, YAWMM, d2x-cios)
  • Use d2x-cios to install the correct cios so you can play file images of Wii and gamecube games

EDIT: You can use SDHC cards if you have system menu 4.0 or greater.

It's a USB Hard drive, Seagate free agent to be exact (this one ). I am bringing in a new Hard drive to be sure, but the problem I'm running into is this:

Not a specific song, it's random songs, since using 2018 other JD games are also experiencing issues, prior to that they weren't. I had JD 2017 for 2-3 weeks before getting 2018, we did maybe 30-40 songs on it without issue. Maybe more as I'd already taken that in for my students one day. As well my kid played JD Disney for like 30-40 minutes straight with a friend without issue. However, after the issue with 2018, issues randomly cropped up with other JDs, 2017, and i think 2014 locked up once too.

It's not a split file issue either. 14 and 18 are both 2 files, while 15-17 are single files. I've had games from both styles stutter on me.

Friday during the day we did "Ima sheep" on 2018 maybe 5-6 times so all the students could try it, not a single issue. It was the first song tried at night and it locked up after 20 seconds. The new hard drive should be here in an hour or two and then I'll transfer everything and see if we still have issues or not. As an additional question, is there anything I can run/test to ensure my softmod was done and setup up entirely correctly in the meantime?

Not the brand or model you asked about, but I've gotten two of these to work with two different Wii's (mine and a friends), formatted entirely to FAT32 32-bit cluster size and so far they've worked fine. I wanted something white and "Wii-like" to match the system, took a chance, and was lucky this model worked.

It looks like in the US there's a newer and slightly cheaper revision available, however I cannot offer any promises that it'll work, though it looks nearly identical, so I would assume if my older model works, then the newer one would work for you if used under the same or similar settings.

Possibly pointless photo to give you an idea of how it looks.

Huh?

Pretty sure I spent even less than that on my setup ~10 years ago. I had HDs laying around, I just ordered a 10-15$ enclosure, and viola! Wii Drive. Eventually a larger one would free up from upgrades, Viola! Bigger Wii Drive.

Of course my friend! This is the cable I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00P0C4M5M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

As you can see, it connects my Hard Drive to the Wii U using both USB connectors. If you have a HD with usb 3.0 (which you can find easily in Walmart) then your games will be running excellent!

u/TheMechagodzilla · 4 pointsr/WiiHacks

A component cable shouldn't run you more than $5-7USD.

Monoprice sells one for around $6 as an add-on item.

I purchased this one from eBay. It's only about 4 feet long, which is great for my setup but may not be long enough for yours.

If you really wanted to use HDMI, you could get an adapter for about $12USD.

My recommendation is to keep an eye out for a used CRT. Even if the TV doesn't support widescreen or 480p progressive scan, the Wii really shines on a CRT. This is especially true if you're going to play Gamecube or Virtual Console games on it.

What /u/DrWoolyNips said. However, beyond the list, generally any USB 2.0 hard drive will work, as long as it's formatted properly. Although if you're going to buy a drive, you'd probably be better off getting something like this or something else in that form factor. That exact model is what my Wii runs off, and this style has the added advantage of being smaller and being pretty much tanks (I've dropped and knocked over my setup more times than I care to admit). Of course, if you have that drive lying around, just give it a shot and see if it works.

I'm going to suggest the Classic controller pro, especially if it's your only controller. The GC controller is awesome for N64 and Wii games, but the classic does everything else better in my opinion and does N64/Wii games well enough.

u/TheHerosBane · 3 pointsr/WiiHacks

Personally what I have done is use this mayflash adapter that’s plugs into the wiimote, (link below) through Nintendont, it reads it like a classic controller but I’m pretty sure all the buttons line up.

This was the one I bought.

https://www.amazon.ca/LiNKFOR-Converter-Wii2HDMI-Support-Display/dp/B07KF8H2TY/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=wii2HDMI&qid=1575062516&sr=8-5

Saw a YT video and this guy showed how impressive it was. Well for me it wasn't. I should of guess by how relatively cheap it was. But the reviews seemed pretty decent.

u/facetiousfag · 1 pointr/WiiHacks

Classic controller is your best bet if you're looking at OEM hardware.

Mayflash make an adapter however that lets you connect classic/original controllers to the Wii remote, https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-NES-SNES-Controller-Adapter/dp/B00B2K0C8M

All third party controllers I have seen are absolute aids otherwise.

u/JoeysCorner01 · 1 pointr/WiiHacks

Dude, if you have the money, get a Wii modded for HDMI support, or do it yourself. (The HDMI mod is Wii Dual.) If not, get a Wii to HDMI adapter like this one. I believe you can't get the files off the wii. And yes for the last question, you just need a classic controller to move the cursor.

u/BlueSwordM · 1 pointr/WiiHacks

I would recommend any USB drive that has the normal thumb drive size, has a USB 3.0 interface, is formatted to FAT32, and comes from a reputable company like Sandisk and Samsung.

Here's one with a metal casing for good heatsinking:

u/MustardTiger1337 · 1 pointr/WiiHacks

If it was between a sd card and usb stick I'd go with the stick every day
At one time when I was loading wii systems I had a good price on the duracell drives and they worked long term with out issue
https://www.amazon.ca/Duracell-Gigabyte-Capacity-Chromebook-Computer/dp/B00LTDQYCU

But I've since switched to recommending external drives the passports or slims

u/ertaboy356b · 2 pointsr/WiiHacks

I used to have a pink wiimote with motion plus. It has a silicon case that looks like something from the sex store. I bought it on ebay because I needed the motion plus for skyward sword. My mom found that wiimote, I sold it immediately online!

Wiimote in question: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Wii-Remote-Plus-Pink-U/dp/B0094X221O/ref=dp_ob_image_vg

That's the best one made but, any old pad should do. Afaik, ddr released 2 or 3 games for the Wii and they are your only options.

u/ngs428 · 3 pointsr/WiiHacks

You can’t use that usb to plug in controllers.

If your Wii does not have GC controller ports you will have to see if you can find a GC to wiimote adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Wii-Nintendo/dp/B00YH3NWTW

I have never tried the item at the above link. Just an example.
