The Man, Walter Christie

For someone known as "The Father of the Modern Tank," John Walter Christie has an impressive life story. Compared to his contemporaries Nikola Tesla and Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, Christie was a cross between a brilliant inventor and an adrenaline junkie.

Initially a naval architect, he did consulting work for passenger lines, pioneered early submarine designs, and developed a new turret-track design for battleships. He later developed some of the first horseless fire engines. When WWI broke out, he returned to military inventing, trying to sell a prototype gun carriage to the Army.

Christie’s proposal was rejected by the Ordnance Board, but he found success after presenting a groundbreaking amphibious tank prototype to the Marine Corps in 1924 . While they liked the tank, the military was less than happy with its cross-country ability, and the personality of Christie himself, who had brilliant ideas, but an unshakeable belief in his own superiority. With help and support from a young George Patton, Christie devoted himself to developing a design to solve the mobility issue, and was able to sell seven models of his tanks to the Ordnance Board.

The tank he designed was too revolutionary for the times. It could travel 60 MPH on tracks (faster on just the roadwheels if the tracks were removed) and was capable of climbing a 2 ½ foot wall or crossing a 7 foot trench. The board refused to adopt it as a standard model or pay for more vehicles.

Discouraged, Christie sunk more of his money into the design and sold two tanks to the Soviet Union, who called it the "Christie-Russki"and enthusiastically adopted both the design and mobile armor tactics it was meant for. The British took an interest in his designs as well, and British Covenanter, Crusader, and Comet cruiser tanks can trace their lineage directly from Christie’s concept of a fast tank with sloped armor, a fighting turret, and good cross-country mobility.

Money's on it being crap. Don't/Won't own it.

    1. Bottom middle pic. Single-stitched, looks pretty crummy, looks like a low weight thread (breaking strength). Biggest issue when considering a new pack. No point getting one that's going to split seams. When you're getting load-bearing gear, you always want to look at the seams and stitching. That section, there? If it looks wimpy, think about how the bits you can't see will hold up.
      • Also think about the materials sewn together and comparative strengths. Personally I don't care for pleather. Tears easier than the cordura layers. Load it down with too much/pull on the zipper too hard, and you can rip the stitches right through it.

    1. Buttons. Top middle picture with the cell. When you push that snap down, it's going to be pushing into whatever you've got in the pocket, right in the middle of the screen area. Plus when buttons break, you're SOL.

    1. Kind of gaudy D-ring pulls. Are those on open-topped pockets? If so, I'm never going to be sticking anything in them. No point in paying for something you won't use.

    1. Single buckle in the center. Partly personal taste. Aesthetically displeasing, and if I'm snapping down a cover I want two fastening points. Bugs me having a cover flapping open at the ends and leaving a gap.

      ****

My vote's for one of these. If you want more reviews, there are about four times as many on the UK page.

I love mine, it's still going strong after two years and still in like-new condition.

  • Swissgear's the shit. Great company, good reputation, not like whatever dollar-store factory's producing the WoT bags.
  • Super-heavy materials, quality stitching.
  • No buttons on it, anywhere. It's got heavy duty zippers with reinforced seams, and velcro on all the pockets. You just drop the flap and it seals itself, pretty much.
    • If you somehow manage to get the velcro patches loose, all you have to do is get them re-sewn/replaced. Unlike buttons, which are pretty much impossible to fix.
  • Double buckles on the cover. Don't even have to zip up the interior, it's that snug and secure a fit.
  • Plenty of room. It neatly accordions out a bit, gives you some extra 'stretch.'
  • Neutral, presentable appearance. Makes you look like an adult. No problem carrying this into college classes with kids, night classes with working professionals, or out in public. Mine's paired up with one of their Present-a-Folios with the cover flap. Not sure if they're still producing those, but it's another great organizer. Bag for the books, Folio for the paperwork and group projects, and I'm set.

E: On the folio thing, it's basically a briefcase, except you don't look like a tool because you're carrying a briefcase to class. Gives you more options for what you're carrying, so you end up carrying less. You don't always need to carry your laptop to class, or carry a sack full of books. Grab the folio, grab the one book you need. Versatility is nice. Perk to this stuff is you can head down to any Office Depot or Staples and check it out firsthand.

That's what works for me, but I'm finishing up a business degree at a military college. I might be a day student now, but I've still got to be professional, not show up to class looking like Joe Schmoe the Clemson pro.

Seriously, it's a friggin' fantastic piece of gear.

If you're talking about the World of Tanks line of 1:35 model tanks, it's an iffy decision, unless you've got some model building under your belt. The kits are pretty old italeri molds which mean that they're not as accurate as some newer kits, but they're good enough. The worst part of the World of Tanks model kits are the tracks. They are god awful and will break when you try to put them on your tank, leaving you with a disappointing result. Yeah, you get some gold and some nice in game bonuses, but in my opinion, unless you have some spare tracks lying around that are better than the in-box italeri tracks, I'd probably buy a good old Tamiya kit. Easy to build, good tracks, little to no fuss, your just have to buy some Tamiya extra thin cement.

I just finished my AMX-30B from MENG, and while the tracks and suspension on the kit actually function, it's for advanced modellers and has a really hefty price tag. The tracks were the most painful part as you had to assemble each link (made of multiple parts) by hand 160 times.

Some really easy and cheap and good looking 1/35 builds from Tamiya are:

Panzer II , Walker bulldog ($12-15)

M4 Sherman ($30)

T-34 , Panzer Iv ($20)

Prices are estimates.

Razer Imperator 2012

Obviously they have the 2013/14 now but this mouse is very good and has a wide range of sensitivity. It is one of the best-looking Razer products, it has a very nice matte graphite finish (rubberized on the sides) instead of the regular shiny black. It's plenty big for a desktop mouse, it is wired for fast response and the braided cable is long and soft. The buttons on the side are movable like on that R.A.T. mouse, which is awesome for ergonomics. Overall it's a nicely weighted, classy mouse that doesn't scream "GAMING MOUSE" when you turn the LEDs off.

This is a good place to start.

https://www.amazon.com/Never-Lied-Again-Conversation-Situation/dp/0312204280

One of my best friends is a Military interrogator at a VERY high level. We're talking, if DEVGRU hadn't made a paper weight out of OBL, he'd have been on the team questioning him. I gave him a PDF of this book and he said 90% of it is accurate and useful. He's been an amazing mentor for about 6 years now in my other work, so to me, his word is gospel on the subject of lying. So running the conversation thru a mental filter, it doesn't really ring either completely true or untrue.

>“I do know that the slickest way to lie is to tell the right amount of truth... then shut up.” - Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land

I think this takes a few truths and expands enough on them to make them sensationalist. Regardless, those few truths are disturbing in and of themselves.

I'm going to guess it isn't that great? The price just seems so high, and they must be paying an arm and a leg for rights to use copyrighted material.

Just compare the two, you pay ~40 more for the all leather bag that has great reviews (I have a smaller version of that bag and love it for my daily commute on the train).

To me you can get better quality for the price point or pay a little bit more and get something way better. As far as the jackets, coats and such go... yeah I'm going to not even touch that as you can find tons of things that cost as much or cheaper that are way better.

Before buying a cooling platform, test if it actually makes any difference by pointing a box fan right towards it. Lift it up a little so the air can flow freely under the bottom and cool the area most likely to get hot (the CPU/GPU area).

You could also get something like this.

Here's someone getting a 62% performance improvement (FPS) on a Surface Pro 3:

If you want a really nice mouse, and don't need a bunch of extra buttons, the Logitech G400 is wonderful. I've been using it since march and have been very happy with it.

You can change the DPI at anytime, even when in game. The software provided on the logitech website allows you to select multiple DPI presets that you can cycle through with the +/- buttons on the mouse.

It isn't a very small mouse, and isn't very large. I guess it would be on the larger side of medium? I'm not sure what you grip style is, but for an averaged sized person using a palm grip, it is very comfortable.

u/HighlighterFTW · 2 pointsr/WorldofTanks

Thanks for pointing out the quality of the stickers. The Tiger 131 did not come with stickers; all of the on-brick designs/graphics are directly printed on the bricks, like Legos. The colors aren't as vibrant, but they suffice.

The Maus is advertised with stickers, so now I'm afraid for their quality.

Also, how is the Tiger 2? The set listed on Amazon looks a bit funny in the hull and side skirt area. Does it look better "in person"?

u/Dae314 · 6 pointsr/WorldofTanks

In my opinion, you should only do that if you already have a good set of headphones/speakers that can actually take advantage of the increased sound quality from a card. If you're running WoT with a $20 set of stereo speakers, you'd get more "sound-quality-per-dollar" by getting a better set of headphones than you would with a sound card.

The other reason I came here is to recommend that you get a DAC that's external to the computer. They're undoubtedly more convenient for headphones (who's going to run their headphone cable to the back of the PC?), and arguably you reduce the amount of EM noise by taking the DAC outside of your computer rather than have it sit next to all of the computer's electronics on the PCI-E slot.

The last time I looked, the FiiO E10K was highly recommended for entry level price-to-performance.

Yes. It's a brisk eucalyptus with some light menthol. There's some sort of grain bits in the soap that add that scrubby-ness.

Feels great for a morning wake up shower. Goes nicely with my shaving soap.

u/beefqeef · 5 pointsr/WorldofTanks

If you're willing to spend a decent chunk of money on a sound card, don't. Get an external DAC- it does the same as a sound card but is further isolated from interference in your computer. Some also have built in volume controls and mute buttons.

I use a Scarlett Solo with audiotechnica M50X headphones.

This is a good small DAC.

And this is one which I use.
Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen 2 in 2 Out USB Audio Interface https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01E6T56CM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Xi8Fxb55YAY5D

Edit: It's not worth it unless you have a good quality headphone set. I would recommend the audiotechnica M40 or M50 headphones for very good quality at low prices compared to other brands.

yep, plus they are supposed to come with gold and premium time. If you buy them on Amazon they are pretty cheap. Currently, they are 55% off there-

mfw "$50 is a heavy price":

New

Used

At no point is $55 a really heavy price, given the content of the book. And shipping internationally costs more because customs is a thing.

Now, if you dont want a reference book (and thats what this is) then yea, I can see the price being an issue. But in the realm of reference books, this price is pretty good.

u/SharpObjectz · 1 pointr/WorldofTanks

Keep in mind a lot of top players play the game with minimal graphics settings, so having all the ultra settings won't make you better. Maybe that isn't why you want a better build but something to keep in mind ;)

I've looked at those too and wondered if it was a good deal. Never took the time to do the math.
