My dad took a couple friends and I to The X-Files Expo in 1998 at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC. We were in 8th grade and it was maybe a month or two before the movie came out so it was pretty exciting at the time. Fortunately my dad was a fan of the show so he wasn't completely bored out of his skull. I don't remember it super-vividly but I'll share what I can in bullets below:

  • The line to get into the main room was in a hallway with the walls lined with "file cabinets." According to this article (which has other info as well) the dates on them were all from the 60's.

  • The author of one of the official episode guides was there signing autographs (pretty sure it was this one). I think he wrote "the truth is in here" in mine.

  • In the bag of stuff they gave you upon getting there was a floppy disk that you could give to the photographers who had special cameras that could take pictures and put them right onto the disk for you which you could then take home. I specifically remember my dad and I posing with a couple "FBI Agents" in front of whatever car Mulder and Scully would drive in The X-Files movie, looking at the sky for UFO's. I actually tried digging up a disk with these pictures a couple years ago but for some reason I couldn't get it to work.

  • There was a theater/room that was showing a "special preview" for the movie. As far as I can recall it was just a normal trailer though, maybe it was one that hadn't debuted elsewhere yet.

  • As you would expect there was a ton of X-Files merchandise for sale, I don't recall buying anything though.

  • I assume because they couldn't possibly meet demand for autographs, there was some sort of system where you scanned your ticket at the entrance and you would get a slip entitling you to a certain actor's autograph. My dad and my friend ended up getting Gillian Anderson but my other friends and I were shut out. We were content to just head home at our planned time but as we left some people who were leaving as well gave my dad their passes for GA's autograph and after talking my dad into letting us stick around, we each called our mothers to see if we could stay (myself included, as that day happened to be Mother's Day).

  • Our mom's were all very understanding and we waited in line for GA's autograph as she did a Q&A with the crowd. The only thing I can recall from this is GA singing Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" ala the episode "Detour." I wish I could remember what other actors were there though I'm pretty sure Mitch Pileggi and Dean Haglund were among them.

  • Eventually we got GA's autograph and I seem to recall 14 year old me saying something stupid and making an ass of myself while handing her an 8" x 10" to sign. It was worth it though, I still have that picture, framed in my parent's house somewhere. All in all I remember the convention being a good time. I should probably thank my dad again for putting up with us.

One thing I think should be mentioned, since it connects with a previous guest - DC Pierson has a book called The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To

The book, like Sleepless, deals with someone who doesn't sleep. I personally really liked this book (read it a few years ago) and I think a lot of you may as well, being fans of not just X-Files, but of a similar sense of humor as well.

I have a CDROM copy that I played recently on a newish PC.. I don't think it will work on Mac, though, at least it didn't when I tried it on my circa 2006 MacBook. I got the game off eBay. I know nothing about console gaming but if you can play PS1 games on PS3 you can get the console version on eBay or Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00002STKN?pc_redir=1407315630&robot_redir=1
