I know that not everyone here has the scratch for top-dollar optics, and some others just like to play around with various types of optics and may not care if they're top of the line, so this may be of interest to some of you.

A while back I ordered what I thought might turn out to be a dud, the Centerpoint "Tactical" 1-4x20 illuminated scope - it had great reviews and was touted as a sleeper deal on several forums and Youtube videos, so I thought, what the hell?.

What I received turned out to be a pretty good bargain: a basic 1-4x illuminated scope that is at least on par with the quality of my older Primary Arms 1-4x, but in a lighter and smaller package. In fact the build quality exceeds the PA scope in several areas, notably crispness of elevation/windage adjustments, and the quality of the illuminated etched reticle, which unlike the PA 1-4x scope, does not "bloom" the entire glass on higher power settings. The scope even includes a nice, solid centilever mount that puts it smack dab at the perfect height for the majority of AR rifles.

I thought it was a nice enough scope that I ordered a couple more, even though I hadn't decided what to do with them yet.

While this is probably not something you would want on a SHTF type rifle, so far it has done the job as a basic 1-4x that's affordable enough ($60) to top off several different non-essential rifles.

So far I have one living on a Sig 522, and another that has fared well on a 20" A4 clone. I was curious about whether or not this scope could handle .308/7.62 NATO, and after reading a handful of reviews that confirmed that it would without problem, I decided to see if I could adapt one to use with my Zastava M77.

To pair up with the M77, I wanted to try one of the cheap copies of Midwest Industries mounts before I considered dropping big coin on the real thing. I already have a genuine MI Gen 1 rail mount and a Chinese copy of it, and I could hardly tell the difference between the two. So, I went ahead and ordered a Chinese copy of a similar MI product:

https://www.amazon.com/FIRECLUB-Arrival-Release-Aluminum-Platform/dp/B01N98AKCK

The reviews were not great but I smelled a lack of understanding in how the mount works or is meant to be used, so I said fuck it and ordered one. If it didn't work out I was only out $30. When I received the mount, I found it to be solidly built, though the latch mechanism is a bit grittier than the previous MI mount copy I had purchased on Amazon.

Most here probably know that the MI style mounts can be easily modified to clamp on to the Zastava rail, and that took me about 5 minutes to mill out with a cheap 1/4" end mill in a drill press. The mount then slid on and indexed on the lower rail of the mount.

However I also found that the threaded clamping stud was hitting the side of the side rail, and needed to be relieved until it was flush with the surrounding inner surface of the mount. Otherwise, the mount did not fully clamp down square and flat onto the side rail. I removed the threaded clamping stud and ground a flat section on a bench vise until it was flush when inserted. Another 5 minute job. The mount now slides on and clamps securely to the Zastava side rail.

With the scope installed in the mount, it sits a touch just to the right of the centerline - this may vary for each individual rifle. Peering through the scope on 1x, the reticle is directly above the front sight post, and appears to be centered, but this will possibly change once the scope is zeroed.

The scope rests far enough forward that relief is good at all magnificiation levels using the 8.5" version of the ACE modular stock.

Shown in the photos is the scope set to 1x with the reticule set to maximum red illumination - there is also a green setting which I prefer not to use.

UNFORTUNATELY - this combination did not work out with any other AK I tried it on - I tried it on Bulgarian, Russian, and Romanian variants, and on each one the rear housing of the scope hit the top cover and prevented the magnification from being adjusted. However as you can see it appears to be almost perfect on a Zastava AK.

All in all this appears to be a good way to top your Zastava rifle with a cheap 1-4x optic. If some of you are interested I'll post back in a couple of weeks once I've had a chance to get out the range and get zeroed, and to see if the optic holds up to .308/7.62 NATO. If it holds up to this cartridge fine, I would expect no issues on a 7.62x39 or 5.56 Zastava.

If you've got the press and riveting tools, you'd probably need to make/buy some jigs and things, but that should be pretty easy. If you get an account on the AK Files, people will rent or loan jigs.

I like Arms of America for my parts kits.

AK-Builder has tools/dies/jigs/rivets/parts/etc.

What-a-Country has kits as well.

And, last but not least, Apex is also good for parts.

You should also get a copy of The Grim Reaper, the AK Bible, so when you find a kit you like, you can see what it's supposed to look like if you want to do an "accurate" build. In addition to being a great reference, it's heavy enough to crush a koala, so if you have a koala infestation, that's handy...

Any ammo will be fine. As for what zero works best, etc., I recommend taking a look at this and going from there. You'll learn a lot about your rifle and how it was used historically.

There really isn't much to watch out for; if you get a side-mounted optic, just make sure you know how to install one. One thing's for certain, though, clean your muzzle device and its threads (as well as the front sight block's threads it mates with) as often as possible after a firing session. This is doubly so if you're firing corrosive surplus. My latest AK purchase was an SGL 31-61 and it looks like the previous owner shot 30 rounds, maybe 60, through the rifle, but it must have been 7N6 surplus. Everything was clean but he'd never removed the muzzle device to clean it. I had to depress the detent for the device with a punch and run a screwdriver through the brake's main exhaust port area. This was the only way I could get enough leverage to rotate it free since it had started rusting. That rust was fusing the metal of the brake and the metal of the FSB threads together, effectively turning it into what would eventually become a "permanent" muzzle brake. Clean that up or it will get nasty fast. I've seen a brake that only ever saw 7N6 through it -- like 1k+ rounds of it -- that had not been properly cleaned except maybe once or twice during the first couple hundred rounds. It has been permanently rusted into place for the past five years. Only hope the owner has for replacing it is drilling out the FSB pins and replacing the entire assembly.

Keep that brake and threads clean and you'll be fine. If you don't have time/products to clean it same-day, at the very least, remove the brake from the rifle. It'll keep any rust that's forming from fusing the two items together. I make it sound a lot worse than it is, but with muzzle brakes after firing corrosive 7N6, I get paranoid. Commercial ammunition isn't as big of an issue: just keep it oiled enough to where you can still remove it by-hand and you're good.

I used this guide and a got a trust from them if you don’t have one. You can file as an “Individual.”

I got my fingerprints done myself.

  • Get Finger Print Cards here for free. 10 is good to start.

  • Got ink here.

So once Hinterland shipped my rifle, i asked for the Serial Number. Then started the E-Form. Once it gets approved, I’ll take my rifle to the gunsmith to drill out the gas restrictor and cut and crown the barrel. If you have the tools you can do it yourself.

You’re gonna need to get your firearm engraved too.

The whole process sounds like a lot but it’s super simple. Approval time is about a month. I did my first stamps in March and it got approved in the same month. Head over to r/NFA for more info if needed.

You can find surplus Russian wood furniture that looks beautiful. There’s also cool Russian optics made for the side-rail that are super super cool. Look up the PK-01-VS for a red dot sight

BelOMO PK-01 VS. Red Dot Scope Collimator Sight Saiga. 1 MOA. Original https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZXVX17L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_TzK1BbK7BD7KF

Railed hand guards are generally not worth it as they kinda hurt to hold and you’re not going to see a lot of benefit from a foregrip unless you’re shooting full-auto or competition

I appreciate it. For the price chicom is awesome but would something like this be a solid buy? I like that it has mag pouches for the pistol as well, but do you think reloads would be made easier?

> neither extreme or violent in a method to accelerate the projectile rapidly.

......Thats why guns never explode because smokeless gently pushes the rounds down the barrel with with light and gentle pressure. Oh I get it now./s

You are arguing semantics with someone who doesn't give a fuck. Try to change your walls mind and you might have better luck. And hey dumb ass what do hemorrhoids feel like? oh that's right they feel like butthurt. Since I was never a dick to you till after you called me one, you must have hemorrhoids, because you were pretty butt hurt over a mild joke, that was more in agreement with you while making fun of I.O., RAs,C39 owners, yet you took it personally. Most likely because you were already in butthurt due to the hemorrhoids, Hence why I recommended it for you. Why you think my pussy has a yeast infection Idk, it's not like you can see me sitting here scratching at this itchy thing, But I promise it's not from you, you are no where near sweet enough.

And now the downvotes are hurting your feefees? Don't worry I'll have a talk with them.

Guy stop downvoting him. He obviously can't handle the downvotes and needs a safepace where he can hide from all the libtard cucks who aren't even here yet he felt the need to bring that up.

Also might want to double check those numbers, Unless these are 300g containers. But surely you know what you're talking about and didn't throw up a random thing you read once.

Not quite, it's much brighter green from a translucent green polycarbonate. This topic on AKFiles describes it a bit and shows the actual Russian green.

The "rightness" or "wrongness" of it never crossed my mind honestly. I thought it looked neat, the wife loved the color, and that settled it.

Off the top of my head (might be missing a few things), you will need:

  • Flat bending jig
  • Spot welder
  • Heat treating arrangement
  • 12 ton press
  • Drill press
  • Riveting jig
  • Barrel pressing/populating tools
  • Hammer
  • Punches
  • 3mm drill bits
  • 4mm drill bits
  • 1/4" end mill
  • 7mm reamer
  • Gas port drill bit (there are several sizes you could use)
  • Vise
  • Bench grinder
  • Rivets
  • 922r compliance parts (trigger, furniture, etc.)
  • Go/No Go headspace gauges
  • Dremel

I'm probably missing one or two things. Similarly, you could also live without some of the stuff I mentioned, but you'll want most of that to do a decent job at it. You're looking at easily $500-$1000+ for the tools and jigs if you have to buy everything.

As for a guide, get this and this

Don't get into AK building because you want to do it on the cheap. Those days are gone. Get into AK building because you love AKs and want to build a lot of them.

I use testors model paint. I fill in what I want to color, squeegee away the excess, wait about 20-30 minutes then lightly wipe away the remaining excess with a rag that has some Hoppes on it. An additional thing that’s helpful are
these q tips. They let you get some very detailed work/cleaning in (like the center of the 6 or the A) because they don’t fall apart and shed like normal q tips. All this is stuff you can get at hobby lobby or michaels for like $15 or so.

u/LynchMob_Lerry · 2 pointsr/ak47

Well you may not be able to get a cosmoline air freshener but you can get a Hoppes #9 I know its not the same but dammit it smells great too.

Ain't that the truth! I not too long ago got this [https://www.amazon.com/AK-47-Grim-Reaper-Frank-Iannamico/dp/0982391854/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1527280971&sr=8-1&keywords=the+grim+reaper+ak+47](1,100 page book) and now I want every variation ever made pretty much. The addiction is REAL! LOL
PS-I Clearly suck at formatting

u/cygnosis · 5 pointsr/ak47

I wanted to believe this was photoshopped, but if it is somebody has gone to great lengths for a prank. It's a real thing on amazon, though they say it isn't released yet.

Apart from the coffee-table part, could anyone compare this to Ezell's "Kalashnikov: The Arms and the Man" (and for that matter, Ezell's original and the expanded collector's edition published after he passed away)?
