I am replacing a Nexus 10 that is becoming problematic and slow, requiring a factory reset every few weeks to keep it from becoming too slow to use. I already attempted to solve this cheaply myself with an RCA Maven Pro 12", and the screen is god awful and it's slower in its best state than the Nexus 10 is when it needs a factory reset. Other things about the Maven Pro make it attractive, but it's truly a piece of junk to be avoided.

So, my usage for this tablet will consist of:

  • Video consumption, 1080p 60fps. Youtube/Netflix/Plex/Twitch.tv
  • Chat in hangouts / twitch streams
  • Control of ssh terminal to remote systems
  • VNC control of remote systems
  • eBook reading
  • Reddit via sync for reddit
  • Web Browsing
  • SDR Applications for RF monitoring

Although the screen on the Maven Pro is awful, the size is just incredible. It allows for the device to truly act like a tiny laptop and the media consumption experience is far better than even the 10 inch screen it replaces. Normally, availability of recent versions of android is top of my list of requirements, but at larger screen sizes that tends to just not be possible. The options that I have not already tried in the 12"+ size category that I am aware of are:

  • Galaxy Note 12 Pro - Expensive, outdated version of android, but it has a very fast processor and the screen is reputed to be worth killing babies for. Very strong contender, especially since there is a very nice OEM keyboard option for it and it seems that there is some LineageOS support for this device as well.
  • Chuwi Hi12 - Cheap as hell, very very nice IPS screen, limited LineageOS support (which may be going away due to drivers no longer in mainline kernels). Keyboard from OEM is reported to be absolute garbage, so an alternative keyboard solution may be needed, but at this price, it wouldn't be too bad. Performance is reported to be mediocre at best, but it will be better than the RCA Maven Pro. If Lineage OS support continues, I would expect performance to increase. Also includes windows 10, which would be an interesting bonus, as well as the option to run ubuntu instead of windows or android. Another negative: touchscreen accuracy is awful when using any sort of screen protector (shitty digitizer).
  • Virgin Mobile TellyTablet - Perfect form factor to go along with media consumption use case. I can't seem to find one in the US, so I may have to get it shipped from the UK. ROM support may be spotty, so thats another negative, and portability will be iffy as well. Pretty much an unknown for me, as I've never seen one in person.

What other 12 inch or larger tablets are there that run android? I'm pretty flexible on most parameters, so long as the screen size is 12 inches or larger and doesn't have craptastic viewing angles like the Maven Pro. Hell, if I could pay to have a decent processor and IPS display put in the Maven Pro, I'd do it.

    Thanks in advance!

Happy to help you out nevereven :-) cool name by the way. Sorry for taking so long, get the Huawei + Harman Kardon MediaPad M3 8.0 Octa Core 8.4inch Android android tablet its a good substitute for the K1 and a bit over $250 but a good price.

With its compact yet sizable 8.4-inch display, long-lasting battery and dual-1W Harmon Kardon speakers, this tablet’s name says it all. From YouTube videos to movies, this is one of the best options out there if you’re looking for a tablet on which to consume media. Even though we’ve found gaming to be somewhat choppy at times, it is capable of playing high-end 3D games with few issues.

The Huawei MediaPad M3 offers an immersive display, great audio and long-lasting battery life and while gaming can be somewhat choppy, it is capable of playing high-end 3D games with few issues. You can also make phone calls with it, if you’re into that sort of thing. Go for it :-)

well, for one thing, the Nexus 10 gets the newest versions of Android. I'm pretty sure the Note 10.1 is on Ice Cream Sandwich still. Android 4.0. the Nexus 10 should be on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean now, with an update to 4.4 KitKat coming soon. the Nexus 10 also surpasses the Note 10.1 in processing power, with a dual core exynos 5 SoC, compared to the quad core exynos 4 in the Note 10.1. exynos 5 is Cortex A15 based, while exynos 4 is Cortex A9 based. a dual core a15 processor easily surpasses a quad core A9. the difference won't be that noticeable coming from an iPad, which basically has a CPU equivalent to a dual core Cortex A9. so either one is a pretty big jump in power for you. the Note 10.1 basically has the Micro SD card slot and the S-Pen that might make it worth doing. the UI on the Nexus is much more preferred by Android users as well. I'm not sure if you can use Nova Launcher on the Note 10.1 and still have all the S-Pen features be completely intact, but you should be able to.

both tablets are great, and while the Nexus 10 easily surpasses the Note in every way, if you want expandable storage, the note 10.1 is easier to do that on. you can also root the Nexus 10 and use Stickmount, and attach a flash drive or external hard drive.

after realizing it's an exynos 4 in the Note 10.1, I'm going to recommend another tablet. you might also consider an Asus Transformer. also a quad core A9 based processor, but this has what is, or is very close to, a pure Android UI, and it has a keyboard dock. the Transformer Infinity is a 10 inch tablet, has the keyboard dock, a Jelly Bean update, expandable storage, and a pure Android UI. I'd suggest putting Nova Launcher over it anyway, but still. I'd suggest checking Swappa, but if you want it new and have the money to spend, here's the amazon link. and it's sold separately, so don't forget the keyboard dock if you want it. it's regarded as one of the many reasons why those tablets are so great. the Transformer Infinity seems to offer everything you'd want and more.

if you need anything else, let me know. but I think I've got the best recommendation for you now, with the Asus Transformer.

And here's CNET's review:

Haha. I clearly did not read your entire post, or I would've noticed that you mentioned this tablet. Whoops. Anyway, as the previous owner of the Nexus 7 2012 and 2013, this thing is amazing. I love how they got rid of the back, home, and menu buttons entirely. You can add them to the screen if you like, and in multiple configurations, or even have a small floating button that expands and has them. Or, you can ditch them entirely, in favor of the intuitive single physical button, below the screen. You tap once to go back, hold to go home, or swipe left or right in leui of the menu button. Also, 4GB of RAM and this screen is gorgeous! I'm never going back.

Funny you should mention, as my wife has a Zenpad s 8. Asus's marketing is confusing, as they seem to have three versions (Z580C - 1.33GHz/2GB, Z580CA - 1.83GHz/2GB and 2.3GHz/4GB). The lower end Z580CA and the Z580C seem to get mixed up together.

Wife has the Z580CA 1.83GHz/2GB/32GB model, and it's great. Snappy fast, absolutely stunning screen quality. I don't know how well it will perform emulation-wise. Haven't tried that, but I'm considering it as a future replacement for my Shield. I wouldn't give the 1.33GHz version a second look though, too low end. Though I suppose you can get lucky. We bought the C version, but at the time I don't think there was a 1.33GHz model, so we got the 1.83 GHz Z3560/PowerVR model.

But yeah, the Zenpad S 8 looks pretty sweet, and I've never seen a tablet or a phone with such a beautiful display, it's literally the best looking screen I've ever seen on a portable device.

I think when I get home I'm gonna see if we still have the Zenpad's box, because I swear it was the C version, despite the faster chip in it. Specifically bought the Asus Zenpad S 8 Z580C-B1-BK here, but the page now specifies the lower end model... odd.

One of the best Android Tablets I have seen come on the market in a while is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 9.7-Inch. It features a vividly contrasting HDR on a Super AMOLED display and comes with an S Pen Stylus that can do amazing things. I have found it very useful. This video reviews it pretty well...

I just bought myself the Tab S 8.4 and purchased one of Logitech's Bluetooth Tablet Keyboards with it. I hunted around for a keyboard case, but none of them really impressed me nor looked like they could withstand everyday wear-and-tear. The Logitech syncs up easily, works well with Android, and also feels great. Both the keyboard--which comes with a case--and the tablet take up hardly any space in my backpack, which is very important because I'll be using the tablet for all of my classes next semester along with the keyboard for any of my programming courses.

I use an ASUS TF700T though it's pretty old now. There might be better options out there. I love mine though.

I should mention it's been rooted and has a pretty fast Lollipop rom on it which makes a big difference.

The screen resolution was the big requirement for me.

Amazon has a newer, even higher screen res model here for a little more money. I can't vouch for the performance though.

u/Logseman · 2 pointsr/androidtablets

The Asus Zenpad S8 looks quite good. It's got an 8 inch retina screen which looks gorgeous, it's perfectly competent in terms of specs, and you've got it for 180 bucks which gives you some breathing room for a cover or something. Plus, it's Prime-enabled.

u/MrWally · 1 pointr/androidtablets

The Zenpad is available from Amazon Warehouse for $150. It has 2gb of Ram and an Atom processor:

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-ZenPad-Z580CA-C1-BK-64-Tablet/dp/B011TVF5QC?tag=at88-20&th=1

Do you think the $50 is worth it over the Shield? Or should I just save my money and go for the better tablet? It seems like the Zenpad has a better battery. Both have Nougat, and they have different aspect ratios (I don't know which ratio I prefer).

u/alienccccombobreaker · 1 pointr/androidtablets

The S2 is a good choice if you can get it cheap otherwise consider this newer tablet as an option: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MATMXZV

To be honest screen quality won't be really noticeable if you are viewing it from afar or just using it for sound but if you really like high quality resolution and crisp definition the 2k screen on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and Asus Zenpad 3S will blow you away.

I use a Huawei Mediapad M3 but it is 8.4 inches not 9.7 like the others so the small size difference might be offputting for your use case scenario.

The Tab A is a last gen tablet for some reason trying to be new gen.. very dated specs.. the screen isn't bad it's just the newer ones which are very little in price difference are many times better. Also I am not even sure if the tablet can support resolutions above 480p on YouTube and other media streaming or viewing sources so that might be a drawback, a bummer.

I'm looking for a tablet for school: onenote, stylus use/note taking. Attached stylus is a plus.
Outside of school I would use it for primarily video watching, browsing, and occasional music making apps (like g-stomper).
I've been looking at the Yoga 3.
USB C is a plus, but not for a huge price increase. Budget under $200.

Thanks for your help!

the new Nvidia Shield Tablet has a pen for solid note taking and a nice sized 8" screen. Many favorable reviews. I have contemplated trading in my Nexus 7 for it. Some pluses:

u/watterott · 3 pointsr/androidtablets

The S Pen that comes with the Tab S3 is actually very comfortable. It should work well with the Tab A as well. Another option you can try is the Norris Digital - https://www.amazon.com/Staedtler-Digital-Samsung-Technology-GP-U999ERIPAAB/dp/B072N31S7C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526057081&sr=8-1&keywords=norris+digital+pencil

Which high-end Tablet are you referring to?
Also regarding the company, CTL is an Oregon based company that focused on the Educational market https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CTL_(company)

and the Tx1 seems to be a rebadged - Asus Chromebook Tablet CT100 (https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-Touchscreen-Hexa-core-Military-Spec-CT100PA-YS02T/dp/B07QHFRV3M)

Amazon reviews seemed a little all over the place. Hence wondering if anyone had first-hand experience.

It seems like it has issues with touch and randomly getting stuck. I wonder if that is just a software issue.

The tablet seems to have it all and is in the right price point. So I am hoping (wishing) that there is some silver-lining here.

I was just shopping for a tablet. I mainly use em to watch movies and read comics.
i actually brought 3 and planned to return the other 2. But IDK because the Android ones are so cheap.

The ZTE Trek 2... It's only $60 on Amazon / ebay... but this is amazing tablet 0 lag. looks great. only problem is it isn't 1080p (only 720p) but i dont really care. https://www.amazon.com/ZTE-tablet-Unlocked-Android-Marshmallow-x/dp/B01M5IJYBR/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1542853469&sr=1-3&keywords=att+trek

The Amazon HD Fire ($99 on Amazon for sale or $70 on ebay) is a great buy too. Better screen than the ZTE. just its annoying to have to install apps on it. and it feels gigantic for some reason.

I'm looking to buy a budget tablet for a long road trip, just to keep the passenger entertained and for watching movies when we're off the road.

Looking for streaming video, reading books/news, GPS. Cell data would be great, but not essential as I can use my phone as a hot spot, and after the road trip the tablet will just be staying home. No gaming (we have another device just for games, but it can't do anything else). My budget is $150.

Options I'm considering, although I'm open to other suggestions:

Logitech made two of those keyboards, one for iPad and one for Android/Windows. I have one for my iPad Pro and I love it. The protective case for the keyboard folds out into a stand for your tablet.

u/SeannLoL · 1 pointr/androidtablets

Leaning towards the Huawei MediaPad M3 on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LB08BH6/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

Not too sure yet though. The Nexus 7 really was my baby and so incredibly reliable. It's like getting over an ex-girlfriend.

u/sniper_fox · 1 pointr/androidtablets

I'm in the same budget and screen size, but it's for my kid and I don't need a stylus. Let me know what you find. Coming from Amazon Fire 10" and looking for reasonably updated Android M or N without too much bloat like it has.

I'm leaning towards Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T580NZKAXAR 10.1-Inch 16 GB, Tablet currently.

u/Ultimate_E · 6 pointsr/androidtablets

get a nvidia shield k1 and call it a day. u really can't go wrong for $200

Nvidia Shield K1

u/EisenheimGaming · 1 pointr/androidtablets

After 2 days of looking at 10" Tablet (8" looks too small but I'm still looking at them) for 350€~ I'm a little bit lost, I'm looking for something that have a good battery, can handle multimedia without problem, not really interested by games and I will buy a bluetooth keyboard to write.

Due to different taxes in France my choices are between the Asus Zenpad 3S 10 (Asus Z500M) and the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus, both are at 320€~ here in France.

Both of them have pros and cons but I'm not sure if I am in the right or if there is something else better than both of them for my use. I have poor knowledge of phone/tablet environment.

u/moustachedelait · 1 pointr/androidtablets

even a kindle fire HD has 1.5 GB of RAM.
Look how slow it responds around 2.10 - 2.20

Shit tablet. Spend two times the money for something you actually enjoy, or even less if you can live with lower res.
