I'm really late replying but I hope still useful! I looked at the series you mentioned your giftee liking and used my knowledge of anime to go on Amazon and pick out 10 other series or movies they might also like, along with why I think these might be a good option. Your person seems to really like edgy and highly dramatic pieces with a scifi or fantasy flair. That's been my favorite for 15 years! A lot of these are a bit older; I am taking the gamble that with as many newer pieces listed, your person hasn't watched a lot of backlog, and therefore may have missed some really good shit.

Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic. Older, yes, but for anyone who likes drama and scifi, this is a good choice. It focuses on a classic mind experiment: if you can move your brain freely among cybernetic parts and bodies, what is really "you"?

Steins;Gate is what instantly springs to mind for someone who also likes Psycho Pass. And I mean instantly. Fans of one almost invariably love the other. A tightly-plotted time travel thriller.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a bit older, often controversial, and an absolute work of art. There's a strong chance your giftee is a girl based on the other series they like, but even if not, Utena is still a solid choice. Just be careful on this; sending it to a conservative person could backfire badly. I rather doubt that is the case with Attack on Titan and Shiki, but just to be safe. It's strange and beautiful...and stylish beyond all doubt.

Black Lagoon is anime's answer to a Hollywood big budget action movie. Comedic, violent, and unforgettable, it deserves a far wider audience than it's had. Almost every anime fan I know who's seen it has loved it.

Akira is without a doubt one of the most famous anime movies to ever be created. Animated without CG in the 1980s, the quality of its hand-drawn special effects has yet to be equalled by almost any other production to this day. For someone used to today's slick computer assisted animation, it's still mindblowing. Akira is often credited with being just as important as Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon in starting the anime boom of the 1990s, and this is a very nice edition.

Also in the classic scifi category we have Serial Experiments Lain, a show whose points on technology and the internet and the singularity still ring true today. Moody and thought-provoking with masterful use of color and a fantastic soundtrack.

Literally no adult-targeted anime is as famous and well-beloved as Cowboy Bebop. This space western with the jazz soundtrack is a perennial favorite on Cartoon Network Adult Swim, is often suspected as a major influence behind Firefly, and is one of the most popular anime in the US of all time... And it's hitting bluray this month.

Summer Wars should probably come with a bluray device as a tech test. It's that beautiful. A tale of virtual reality and the family and friends behind the characters, Summer Wars is an unforgettable movie which, despite being intensely Japanese, deserves a slot on any videophile's shelf.

My total wildcard pick is Mushishi. Beautiful and dream-like, like a series of 25 minute oases from ordinary life. If this is in fact a slice of life, these timeless Japanese almost fairy tales are like no life you've seen. Some call it slow and overhyped. I call it perfection. At any rate, this isn't at all what I'd get as an only gift; it's more a wildcard filler for a $20 other series. If you want my actual top pick.....

Baccano! is my final and top pick. It's really hard to go wrong with this. This rollicking action anime about immortal Prohibition-era Mafiosi in the United States is one of the best and most underrated anime of all time. Humor, violent action, mystery, drama, good characters, good animation, good music... It has them all. It's chronically overshadowed by its more popular sister series Durarara, and that makes me sad. But Durarara isn't easily available outside streaming, and this glorious madcap piece of anime is. Plus it has at least one theme in common with everything your person listed liking. You know what to do.

I'm saying that by telling yourself you're not a tsun, you're just like a tsun!

Yes.

Yes!

Cute

If we're going just by males, yes. ^(Also because a friend mentioned I remind them of Kyoya)

Because there can never be too much greetings!

Wrote a FAQ without spoiler. Since someone here might have same questions as before I copied/pasted from my previous comments :

Q: How many volumes are the LN?

A: 5 + 1 extra episode. and a sequel (5 volumes)

Q; What is that sequel?

A: It is called Sukamoka abbreviation of "Syumatsu Nani Shitemasuka? Mouichido Atte Kuremasuka" = "What do you do at world end? would you mind to see me, once more?". Here: https://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/asin/404104040X/f2664t19-22/

Q: Will the anime adaption cover to Vol.5?

A: Most probably no. It will cover to the end of the Vol.3. The LN author emphasizes that the anime adaptation is “a story of Chtholly”, and not of “Chtholly and Willem”. And he also said that he intentionally changed the orders of the title of each episode from volume 3. His remarks: https://twitter.com/a_kareno/status/865637937068650497

Q: So do we have season 2 for Vol.4 and 5?

A: It depends on the sales of BD/DVD. But currently the BD/DVD sales is miserable. So I don't expect that the publisher will invest for Season 2.

Q: I want to see season 2! What we can do?

A: 2 things you can do.

1, Buy BD/DVD as soon as possible (they will review the sales and determine the next project around Sep). Me? I already booked 3 complete boxes of BD.

2, If you want to have the 2nd season but not for buying BD/DVD, still you can help - send feedback to the LN author or publisher. If they have got numbers of request they can appeal to their boss. I feel that Sukasuka is a type of anime which is more popular in overseas than that of Japan domestic. If they get numbers of the feedback from overseas they have to reconsider.
Please remember, THE LN WAS ON THE VERGE OF CANCEL ONCE BY VOL.2 BECAUSE OF THE LOW SELLING BUT IT WAS REVIVED BY THE REPUTATION and therefore we now can read the Vol.3-5 and able to see this anime adaption. So, the voice from you does matter for anime season 2. No need to write in Japanese, use your own language. The tweet: https://twitter.com/sukasuka_anime https://twitter.com/a_kareno/

Q: I love the music/songs during the show. OST?

A: OST will be released in 7/12. https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B06Y5SY754

Q: Is there English translation of LN?

A: The fun translation is close to the end of vol.5. People recommend to read the PDF/EPUB rather than the html to avoid spoiler.

Q: Is there manga/comic adaptation?

A: Yes. But slow pace. Currently it is around the end of episode 3 of anime. Only vol.1 is available. http://amzn.asia/7FLeEoF

UPDATE: vol.2 will be released in 6/23

Manga author: https://twitter.com/chimakikaname

Q: The OP is different among episodes?

A: Yes. 1, the color of the letters of the title. 2, the red flash back scene. 3. the color of the ribbons in Elq’s world.

Q: What is the break-bumper indicate?

A: the pattern of the break-bumper is : blue x [ moving wings x3 color patterns + no-moving wings x3 color pattern ] and then red x [...]
https://twitter.com/folderman_gif/status/867423622909919232

UPDATE: The latest one: https://twitter.com/animisc/status/875032516633141249

Q: Is there a wall paper?

A: Animating wall paper of the break-bumper http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=928378517 The author of this: https://twitter.com/Shino_E8D3D1/status/865929899323736064

(for the previous episode - episode 9)

Q: I like Ithea, are there more episodes?

A: There will be an audio-drama of Ithea in BD/DVD vol.5. Original script.

Q: What was the brown thing for the gift to Willem?

A: The gift to Willem is TAWASHI. Scrub brush or scrubber. It means you got a consolation prize.

Q: What is the title of the insert song when Chtholly get onboad?

A: “I call you”, will be included in OST.

I'm pretty sure that the music in Ping Pong will be my favourite of 2014, there's just so many individually good tracks that are very well composed and just enjoyable. And they all fit the show so impeccably well ヽ(^Д^)ノ!

For the people who wants to support Ping Pong the Animation & the awesome OST!

Includes the entire TV series, the soundtrack in all of its glory, awesome storage box, HERO t-shirt + more!

Algorithms are not an indicator of how good a programmer you are. Yes, algorithms are how you solve problems and it feels bad when you can't figure out the algorithm, but there's a million different algorithms that could potentially do the job, each with different constraints like time complexity, memory space taken during execution, initial order of the input data etc. If you're issue is not being able to solve a problem because you can't figure out what algorithms to use, you're actually already half way to the solution and further ahead than about 50% of my IT class. I'm in college right now and a lot of students don't even get to the point where they realize they need an algorithm to solve the problem, they just sit there and freeze and hope someone helps them or get a TA. While it's great to be able to solve algorithms on the fly, how about you not try to reinvent the wheel/rediscover a textbook's worth of human knowledge? There are literal textbooks which just contain different algorithms for different purposes: https://www.amazon.com/Algorithms-Algorithms_4-Robert-Sedgewick-ebook/dp/B004P8J1NA/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=algorithms&qid=1554225551&s=books&sr=1-3 (This one btw is used in a college CS course). Being able to memorize and/or recreate every algorithm in this textbook is not good programming (although I will say anyone who could recreate each algorithm independently is actually a genius). Being able to understand an issue and its constraints, and having a base of knowledge enough to either solve it immediately or help guide you to a new concept that would solve the problem is the ideal for being a programmer.

Take this challenge for example: https://www.codingame.com/training/medium/skynet-revolution-episode-1

I know I need a certain type of path-finding algorithm which always finds the shortest path for me to cut. I don't know what algorithm it is though since I've never learned about it. I could spend 10 hours rediscovering whatever algorithm is needed that was invented decades ago. Or I could be a smart, take the hint from the problem that a breadth first search is needed, and start learning about that to eventually solve the issue without trial and error. Over time, after completing multiple challenges, you'll accumulate the knowledge required to solve most problems as you are already familiar with all the algorithms required. And if you can't, that's just an opportunity to learn something new.

Ah 0079 how I love you. I finished this back in August but am more then happy to go back through it epescially with these fancy ass [Blu-rays.] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B013TOVA98/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1451860108&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=gundam+blu+ray&dpPl=1&dpID=61Aesj38MYL&ref=plSrch) I'm only gonna comment on my favorite episodes however since I know I can't keep up with a daily rewatch because of work and school. But besides all that I want to talk about the best part of this show, the Zaku's. The Zaku's are a true testament to how much of a game changer the first Gundam was for the Mecha genre. Before Gundam Mecha was primarily a show that apealed mainly to children. It had its colorful heroes and villians such as [Mazinger Z] (http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/mazinger/images/f/fc/Old_Mazinger_Z_Wallpaper.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140211204336) and [Getter Robo] (http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/mazinger/images/0/04/Getter.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130606232814) but the Zaku was something more. A singular color scheme that wasnt suppose to pop out. It wasn't a simple toy that a kid could buy off the shelf (even though they can), it was a weapon. The Gundam was originally to be an all white machine. No red, blue, or yellow to be seen. Saddly its the hero and the hero has to stand out amongst the rest. And while the more later suit don't hold this same principle, its the Zaku that stands out the most.

So to all the new pilots welcome. To the veterans that have stood the test of time I bow. Let us endure this bloody year long war togethor and see what fantastic new adventures await us beyond the tears of time! FIRE UP YOUR SOUL, GUNDAM!

/u/rookierach The streaming rights for Netflix, yes (though 'two' years rather than 'years'), but not the DVD Rentals. I come across and deal with the Baccano! and 'legal watching' question a lot, so I hope you don't mind if I copy and paste another response I recently gave on this topic:

> Hi, /r/Baccano! mod here. The reason you can't find any legal streams of it is because there aren't any; Funimation and Hulu's distribution license expired on February 08, 2016. (That's also why you can no longer purchase the season from Google Play. Used to go for $1.99/ep).

> However, this doesn't mean you're necessarily out of legal ways to watch it. If either of you have Netflix (*and live in the USA), you can still rent the DVDs using Netflix's rental service! Or you can always try looking for the DVDs at your local libraries.

> (And honestly, the great thing about the DVDs is that you'll be able to listen to the English dub commentary for episodes 04, 07, 09, and 15 - which you wouldn't be able to through streaming).

> Also: I know that the USA DVDs/BDs are way more expensive and hard to find now post-license expiry, but the UK editions by Anime Ltd (like this BD) are actually still relatively affordable if you were thinking you might like to own Baccano!. (You'll need a player that can play region B/2 discs, though).

> (As for dub vs sub recommendations, I say watch Baccano! in both languages because rewatching Baccano! is always the best of ideas. Rewatching it in all three languages (Japanese, English, French), rewatching it after you've read all the novels currently out and then rewatching it again...oughta be a national pastime.)

Persona 4 Golden has some added Social Links, some new features like a vegetable garden (basically letting you grow items that you can't usually purchase), some additional characters and story events for said characters, additional Personas, new explorable areas of the overworld, a bonus dungeon, new music, costumes that you can wear to affect a character's appearance only, more playable days if you're on track for the true ending, various QoL adjustments to the battle system, and a special epilogue.

It sounds like a lot, and it kinda is, but don't let it put you off P4 Vanilla if Golden represents a bigger financial investment for you. The vast majority of the game is mostly the same. If you're really looking to play Golden and don't have a Vita, I recommend the PS TV, which has near-complete Vita functionality for only $40 (and the Vita has plenty of good games, mind you. May I also recommend Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc?). Golden is also only about $20.

u/squidwalk · 3 pointsr/anime

I'd highly recommend Baccano! too. I have two copies of the series on DVD (got an extra one last time they came on sale as a gift) and one of the Blu-ray, if that's any indication of how much I liked it. I didn't recommend it because the Blu-ray is a limited edition, and is certainly not on sale on Amazon now. But I made the assumption that you wanted stuff on Blu-ray, and if that's false than I'd recommend the Baccano! DVDs over Eden of the East as well, and the DVDs are on a good sale. The series was broadcast in standard def anyhow (it was '07) so you're not losing a lot of visual information by getting the DVD version.

And the dub is quite good. This coming from a die-hard subtitle guy. It fits too, since the characters are contextually speaking English.

u/Gigafrost · 5 pointsr/anime

There might not be any Ghost in the Shell series Blu-ray releases? I've not seen one although I'll admit I only started monitoring anime BD releases like a hawk earlier this year.

I currently only see evidence that the summary movies for the series (The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven) are listed. Likewise, DVD Aficionado (also tracks BDs) thinks that as well. I'd assume that something as important as the series being released on BD would have created enough of a stir to move people at either Amazon or DVDAF to create relevant entries. Solid State Society is simply available.

Otherwise, shopping via Amazon is fine for me although I usually augment the searches using DVD Aficionado. If DVDs are fine then the Anime Legends versions of the first and second seasons are very affordable.

u/ThetaOmega · 2 pointsr/anime

The PSTV is a micro console that plays Vita games. It's compatible with a lot of the vita games, but not all. Persona 4 Golden is the first game I played on my PSTV when I got it. It was amazing.

It retails for around $60-$70 USD

I'm glad you mentioned PS4. I think there is some sort of sync feature, and I just got a PS4 not too long ago. I need to look into that.

A couple of downsides to the PSTV is that it is not compatible with the entire Vita library, and you are locked down to using Sony's proprietary vita memory cards instead of a standard SD memory card like the 3DS.

Not the same person, but the general consensus in the daki community for 160x50 cm sized dakimakuras is the A&J DHR6000. It's pretty pricey, but it feels really nice. Usually people order it from Amazon Japan with the help of a proxy, but I think if you live in the States they recently made it available on Amazon.com. Let me know if you need anymore help!

If anyone's interested, the cheapest way I know to legally get these films is through amazon.jp, where they're approx. $280 for the standard edition Blu-ray box set (with english subs).
http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/aw/d/B00C3DUY5S
Still steep as fuck, but the box is all shiny, glossy, and fits beautifully on a shelf. Also, the movies are good, even the 6th one, and the 7th one could've been called "count the snowflakes" as it's the only full HD film in the set, and the snow falling pattern throughout the film is fucking detailed and hypnotic. Ufotable X Type-Moon is a wonderful combination, can't wait for the upcoming FSN adaptations.

Don't forget that Decapitation: Kubikiri Cycle get's released on January by Vertical. If it's as good as the Kizumonogatari translation should be quite a good read. Which is just a few days after Bakemonogatari part 1 comes out I believe :3 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/1945054212

JK Haru. It is digital only, and if you check its Amazon page, you'll see that so far all reviews praise it. Like /u/takakoshimizu said, it gets really dark and unhappy, though the protagonist is quite sassy, which adds some (dark) humour.

Would totally recommend it.

Most of these shows are held by Aniplex or simply out of print as former Bandai licenses. If you want to own them physically, you better be ready to pay some heafty pricing--if they are even available in some cases because the U.S. licenses for some of these titles (Perfect Blue and Neon Genesis Evangelion) are in limbo.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is a Funimation title that has been released on their S.A.V.E. line. You can find it on Amazon for 20 bucks.

Code Geass, The Melancholy of Haruhi/Disappearance of Haruhi, Perfect Blue, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Baccano! were all released physically by various distributors that are either defunct or no longer hold rights to these respective series. These companies no longer distribute these series directly. Physical releases can still be obtained second-hand for $120 and upwards. Perfect Blue secondhand used copies are trending on Amazon for around 30 bucks which is the cheapest on your list, but you have to choose secondhand vendors very carefully (ESPECIALLY on Ebay) because many sell forged or pirated copies. In the case of Code Geass and The Melancholy of Haruhi, these rights were rescued by Funimation which will eventually release an affordable and high quality release but you are probably going to have to wait at least another year for them to come out. For these two titles, I highly suggest just waiting because Funimation releases are usually the best anyway.

Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica and Baccano! have been released stateside (the latter re-released) but the company released them (named Aniplex of America) is infamous in the anime community for price gouging titles under its ownership. You can obtain them, but not for cheap. Fate/Zero also had a limited run to my knowledge. As another user noted Madoka Magica is trending for around $120 for a 300 minute series. As a fellow collector, I personally despise Aniplex of America and have placed an embargo on them and suggest you do the same.

>You end up needlessly worrying people who have the Region B version.

Not my intention, but UK shoppers should be wary too if buying from eBay. I made this primarily for US shoppers because the bootlegs are on the US eBay and they are bootlegs of the Region A sets (the Region B sets have different logos).

>about what Region you were talking about...

Basically I'm saying the bootlegs can't be UK versions, as not to confuse anyone. They are US bootlegs. The disc covers the bootlegs use may be from the UK version though, now that you mention it.

>Also on the topic of not being able to play a UK version in the US, you can.

I'm more concerned about people using a regular region-locked Blu Ray player or US PS3/4/Xbone. If anyone has the know-how on using multi-region Blu Rays and can then I'm sure they would import their Region B sets (which are cheaper than the Region A for Madoka Magica) and use them rather than buy Region A bootlegs. But perhaps this information can be useful to people who do have that capability but don't use it. The Region B for Madoka Magica is the complete series for £23.17, that's about $37.01 USD for the whole series (much, much, much more reasonable).

I am shocked, shocked I tell you. 2:28 in and there are already war crimes. This... this is not the 0079 I remembered. I had watched the show before but it must have been at least +10 years ago.

The animation is surprisingly tolerable. I guess after falling in love with Legend of Galactic heroes I can shrug this kind of animation off now whereas younger me would have been bugged by it.

As for my personal reactions its similar to many in the thread. I didn't know that Haro could climb stairs, I didn't know they dated back to 0079, I found the reading the manual/instant ass kicking thing humorous, and didn't expect everything to be so grim-dark.

Thanks OP for organizing this re-watch. Bit late because I had to 'acquire' the first episode after seeing this thread but fear not, I have ordered BD Collection 1 from Amazon and it qualified for Prime free overnight shipping!

here's a cheaper variant or you could move to england. in my opinion it's worth shelling out the money for a series you consider a masterpiece.

before you go wild pirating stuff.. check out Daisuki and Crunchyroll. both have (some)free, legal, hq streaming options. Daisuki i know for sure to have Madoka in full+free and they're 100% legit japanese distributors that work directly with producers.

My favorite anime movie. It's just so immersive and endearing, and the animation really still holds up despite the age. I've seen it at least 4 times now... That opening credits sequence gets me every time.

Highly recommend you check out the manga. The movie is (loosely) based on the first 2 volumes out of 7. The manga is so expansive and epic... I stayed up many nights reading it until 4 in the morning because I couldn't stop.

Then I bought the 2-book hardcover box-set on amazon and read it a second time.

Also check out Castle in the Sky if you havent yet. It was very much influenced by Nausicaa, being made only 2 years later.

If you get them here it roughly $240ish and comes with the very basics (none of that extra fluff like pictures and booklets etc.). Only thing I need to find out is if that version has english subtitles. One person says it does but I wish it would be a little more obvious.

so apparently Bakemonogatari in the original language is more expensive than the translated version. To get all of Bakemonogatari in Japanese will cost me slightly more than it does to get all of it in English apparently? I get that there's import/shipping costs and stuff, but usually with manga the translation costs more than make up for it...

but idk about this Kodansha Box series. They're softcover right? I handled the latest Monogatari at Kinokuniya and that's what it seemed like to me, it just came in a box.

2.0 is pretty terrible. They did a lot of unnecessary editing on top of the upscale. Luckily a new unedited anniversary edition blu-ray is set to release at the end of the month.

As far as watching it online, Ghost in the Shell Arise Borders 1 and 2 are available for streaming on Funimations streaming service and Netflix (US and Canada), Stand alone complex is on Hulu (1st and 2nd gig), while the other versions are not available for legal streaming as far as I know.

Watch the original first. There's the classic, then the New Blu-Ray release Both fairly priced for their animation quality.

You can watch Innocence next, if you liked the philosophical aspects of the first movie a lot, otherwise it's skippable.

Then Stand Alone Complex season 1, Season 2, and afterwards, Solid State Society if Stand Alone complex left a bad taste in your mouth at the end of the series. Both are priced fairly considering how much content they contain.

After that, you can watch Arise if you enjoyed the action parts of it a lot more. It's pricey, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Do be aware Arise is a prequel to the series.

The order of shows in Chronological order is: Arise, then Stand Alone Complex, then the original movie, then Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.

All have nudity, sexual imagery, violence, and strong language.

Is that the series that is playing on Adult Swim? Because i'm looking around for the show and i came across many different variations with different titles.

Thank You

>only contains about 12 episodes

There should be 14. That would be really odd if it's only 12.

This has both existing seasons right now.

This is for the sequel movie

If you really want to go all out, this has both seasons and a ton of extras including VA stuff, art, and spin-offs. It doesn't have the movie specifically, but there is a slot in the box for the movie case to fit in. It's really expensive though.

If you wanted to be cool you could buy her the actual novels to read (which are officially translated to english for a few volumes)

> The Region B for Madoka Magica is the complete series for £23.17, that's about $37.01 USD for the whole series

I have this one. It's really nice and indeed much more reasonable. I believe the labels look different, I'll check tomorrow. Amsterdam time tomorrow.

/edit: Disc 2 has a complete different picture as label, disc 3 has the same picture but with other colors (white background).

You may know this already, but the high US costs are partially driven by the risk of reverse importation back to Japan (since the US and Japan are the same blu-ray region). By raising the price close to Japan's you mitigate the risk, so low cost versions will never be released until the shows stop selling in Japan. This is also why the UK gets cheaper versions (Madoka Blu-ray complete @~£20=$34) but with almost no bonus features. Things are changing with the recent Gurren Lagann acquisition in the UK, but we mostly get cheap and cheerful

Of course, the fact people buy it at a high price in the US has also got to make them want to keep costs high, and that mostly occurs due to such a large population for a single license region, so they can afford to do it.

Licenses and distributors expire sometimes, which seems particularly problematic for more niche titles in the US. If you can free yourself of region constraints though, the standard edition BD is still available in the UK.
