Welcome to the wonderful world of bike commuting, we’re happy to have you! For a lock you’ll want a short and thick u-lock for the frame and a cable lock for wheels/accessories. Kryptonite makes some great products I highly recommend. Definitely make sure you read up on proper locking methods (https://www.kryptonitelock.com/en/proper-lockup-landing/bicycle-lock-up-bike.html), it might seem like a lot but it’s worth it to take care of your equipment. As far as lights go I have great success with this(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IO12ZPO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iaYxDbJ27Z7E5Cygolite) set I bought on Amazon. It’s bright, waterproof, the battery lasts a long time, and it has plenty of different settings. Definitely take pictures of your bike and record all identifying information (including the serial) and keep it somewhere safe. r/bikecommuting has lots of great tips, stay dry out there!

I should probably pull this post for not being Portland-related, but it's really hot and I'm sorry you don't have a fan. For researching stuff like this I really like The Sweethome and its tech-related sister site The Wirecutter

Here's their picks for The Best Fan. I actually recently bought their runner-up pick, the Vornado 630 (although the price has gone up, it was $60 when I bought it.) It's a great little fan.

So I went down a rabbit hole:

>fuese,
>
>About a year and a half ago, I sent the following email to Fred Mortati, of Orlando Foods, the importer of the Caputo flours:
>
>Recently some confusion has arisen among the members of the pizzamaking.com forum about three of the Caputo flours--the Pizzeria 00 flour, the Pizzaiulo 00 flour and the Chef's flour. See, for example, the post at http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php/topic,7191.msg71133.html#msg71133. The members have been going on the assumption that the Chef's flour is the same as the Pizzeria flour but the post referenced above seems to suggest that it is not the same as the Pizzeria 00 flour. Can you clarify the matter for us?
>
>Shortly thereafter, I received the following reply from Fred:
>
>Thanks for the link, I saw the posts and now understand the confusion.   Here is the situation:  All three products are the same.  Reason for the packaging differences are as follows:
>
>00 Pizzeria 25kg blue bag is for Foodservice.  It has been the face of the Caputo brand for pizza and will remain so.
>
>00 Pizzaiuolo 10kg is a package that Antimo Caputo uses in Italy for a certain segment of his trade.  Exactly why he went with red I am not sure.  We bring in this 10kg bag to give out only as samples, not for sale.
>
>00 Chefs Flour 1kg red bag.  This bag is strictly retail.  We redesigned the bag to be more appealing to the consumer and to have some English description that would allow a consumer to understand that it is more than just an “all purpose” flour.  In fact Antimo and I have been looking at changing the graphic on the front of this package.  The picture of the pizza on front gives the idea that it is only good for pizza, whereas this product is versatile and good for bread and pasta as well.  We are going to change the picture to one that encompasses these other items as well, leaving the description the same and the flour in the bag the same.  We want to start working on a retail presence so this will be a starting point.
>
>Hope this explains some…Please post some of this info to answer the questions raised.
>
>Peter

Theres further confirmation, from multiple sources, directly from Antico molino, worth the read. So if you buy 3 of these, its actually cheaper: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BR0K5SE/

Why not buy online?

I just recently purchased a pretty great laptop on amazon for 650. It can run pretty much anything I've tried. I can send you an Amazon link with the specs. You could save a lot of money.

I can recommend Allies in Change, they have a couple of locations and offer a few different approaches to counseling (group, couple, individual). Not sure about cash pay pricing, but it might be worth giving them a call to see if you think they have something that would be a good fit for you.
I also can't recommend the book Nonviolent Communication highly enough. It should be required reading for humans.

Everything I said is true: the cash you're willing spend will get you the best in this city. I see you shitbagging me in other comments so I'll just say this:

There is a huge socio-political context that you're entering into. Saying you'll drop enough for the top 1% of housing is going to make people assume a lot about you. You'll have a ton of fun here--those celebrity chefs don't charge as much as they do back home--but if you plan on staying and becoming a part of the community then I recommend watching American Winter and reading Fugitives and Refugees (though it's outdated, sadly the 24 Hour Church of Elvis has closed) to get an idea of whats going on in this city.

Clay soil is a wideapread problem here. You can improve it considerably by adding compost on top of it. You don't have to work it into the soil, though when you dig a planting hole, you should add some then.

While you can buy garden compost by the bag, if you're starting out, it's more cost-effective to have a load delivered to your driveway. If you don't want to spread a large quantity yourself, you can have it blown in. Quick and easy! These guys did a great job in my yard: https://www.bestbuyintown.biz/products-services/soil-additives

As far as tools to loosen the soil for digging planting holes, I reccomend a device like this: https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Weasel-91316-Claw/dp/B000WOMYMG

We got some Cirepril hard wax, a good heater and watched some videos. There were some hilarious (and painful!) incidents as part of our learning process, but it's been really positive.

Blue hard wax we use

this is the wax warmer we have

It shouldn't be too difficult, but... It's kind of a "good news / bad news" situation.

The good; The actual process of disconnecting the mic, stripping the connection, and soldering in the new jack would take maybe 10 minutes, assuming you don't care how pretty it is. A cheap soldering kit with a meter like the one I just found HERE is all you really need, tool wise. Add another few bucks for the new jack and you're all set.

The bad; Line level and mic level are quite different beasts, so simply replacing a mic-in with a line-in could lead to some pretty bad distortion. The ease of the project is entirely dependant on the quality of the tape deck we're talking about. Basically, there are two ways this could go: Either you pull out the mic and it's an entirely enclosed system that the maker added on after designing the rest of the unit, or it's just a mic that sends a raw signal to processors on the main circuit board. There could be extra problems with both scenarios, but the first one is what you're hoping for. No matter what, it may require additional gear to either amplify or attenuate the line-in signal to match the original input level.

I'm sure there are a ton of people who are FAR more experienced than I am with this, so you really should hold out for someone who could do it better. I haven't touched a soldering iron in over a decade, but I do have a degree in audio, so it's not like I'm a complete novice. If nobody else steps up, I could at least take a look and tell you how hard of a project it would actually be.

You'll find some options for as low as $40 for a very reliable rain jacket from Columbia at the link below. Wear a moisture wicking tshirt underneath. There's a chance it won't be raining when you're here, but you'll want to play it safe.

I had the same problem in a place years ago. Certainly let the landlord know. As an owner, I’d want to know. However, I’m not sure if they have to do anything. Anyway, I picked up a couple of these and put them in the high humidity areas. Worked wonders. Best of luck!

I loved Fugitives and Refugees by Chuck Palahniuk because it really set the tone for how strange aspects of Portland was, although I’m not sure how accurate it remains 15 years later. Still a great book though.

u/schallplatte · 4 pointsr/askportland

I recommend getting this book, which will guide you to all of the features you're looking for, and rates them on a scale from 1-10: http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Oregon-Camping-Complete-Outdoors/dp/1566918413

Note that the best and most highly rated spots will need reservations at http://www.recreation.gov/. Even in late May, you'll run into snow and nights around 25-35 degrees on Mt. Hood, so I would recommend cold weather camping gear. For coast, try Cape Lookout.

I bought this last year for my own poor kitty, she loves it! Packed it away for the summer but it's out now and still going strong. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000S9M2V8
Biggest downside is that she's less needy for cuddles, but at least she's comfortable when I'm not home.

u/Joshua00030 · 2 pointsr/askportland

My leesa has made me afraid to lay down on my own bed. It puts me to sleep no matter the time of day and has easily been my best purchase. Waiting till I move to buy an even bigger size!

u/orlandethic · 2 pointsr/askportland

If you do end up having to use Amazon, check out this one. I bought it a couple years ago and I've been really happy with it.

Would this work for lifting the back up? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LWE1T7R/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I got one for my motorcycle and it works great

u/stiflin · 3 pointsr/askportland

You could give something like https://www.amazon.com/Cobra-86150-4-Inch-15-Feet-Pistol/dp/B000I5HVBI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503978933&sr=8-1&keywords=cobra+drum+auger. I'm not sure how well they work for storm drains, but it combined with a power drill will almost certainly be cheaper than having a professional come out and might be worth a try.
