>Can I use an external mouse with the Asus Transformer for things like web-browsing, etc, when hooked to the dock?

Yes.

>Can it hook to my monitor via HDMI and, with a mouse, work like a normal notebook when I want?

Yes.

>I presume I'd need to buy an HDMI -> MiniHDMI adapter?

An HDMI -> MiniHDMI adapter would definitely be an option. Or you could just by an HDMI -> MiniHDMI cable.

>Does it multitask? i.e. can I have reddit, facebook, MSN, skype, and a music app open all at once? Can I easily switch between apps?

Yes, there is a "recent apps" button. Plus, with the dock, Alt+Tab works just like it would on any desktop (toggles all opened applications).

>Will it play nice with my 2 USB hard disks for stuff like watching movies, etc? I know it supports USB, but I'm just wondering if I can have multiple devices hooked up.

Yes, it has 2 USB ports, but you can split those with a USB splitter and run as many devices as you'd like (I'm sure there is some theoretical limit).

>Can I use bittorrent to aquire media content on Android, and save it to said external disks?

Yes. I use aTorrent. Works great and you can configure it up to save your data anywhere, including externally connected devices.

>Does Skype work with video chat on the Transformer?

Never actually tried Skype.

>Oh yeah, one other thing - Can any Canadians tell me if Netflix in Canada now works with the latest update?

Sorry. But I can attest that in the US, Netflix works flawlessly since the latest update. No root needed. No patch needed.

I posted this last month when someone asked a similar question...

I've had the tf101 for about 7 months. This thing is a beast.

The xda community is top notch. There's a stock update process but trust me you'll want to root and load up one of the many slick custom roms on this bad boy. At this point (thanks to the hard work and time of many) the process is simple and straight forward.

Some are going to say it's not worth $340 with the Nexus 7 being sold for $249. It's a good point but it really depends what you're going to use your tablet for. For instance I can take my tf101 to any tv in my house, plug in the Micro HDMI to HDMI Cable, and watch a movie. And thanks to the USB kit I can hook up my external HD to my tf101 so I have access to all my media. Neither one of those things is doable with the Nexus 7.

In regards to the keyboard, it's a nice accessory to have and it 's does extend battery life BUT the damn thing weights as much at the tf101 itself and there are plenty of on-screen keyboards that work just as good if not better. Oh and battery life is already pretty good.

Speed. All I can say is it's fast enough for me. I use it for music, movies, games, and browsing.

I'm betting you can check craiglist and find a nice one for cheap. There are going to be plenty of people who are selling theirs to buy the next "bigger better thing".

Transformers are android tablets so they run android. I own the very first model tf101. I'm not sure if I would even recommend one at this point. The only advantage at the time was the keyboard but you can pretty much use a Bluetooth keyboard with any android tablet now and I barely used it anyway. My idea was to replace my laptop with it but that's impossible for the 20% of the time you need an actual laptop. A tablet just won't replace a laptop.

I have a nexus 7 2013 and I really love it. It's less than $150 now so maybe that would be appropriate for your needs and you'll save $250. There are much more robust gaming tablets if that's your thing but any current tablet will play any video/audio and be fine for light work, check out http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-940-81761-2500-000-SHIELD-Tablet-WiFi/dp/B00LM6KF7O

I had bought a Monteverde mainly because I needed a ball point pen as well as a stylus. Great pen; not so great stylus.
I just picked up a Wacom Bamboo and I must say its reputation is up held. The hands down best stylus on the market.
Also don't forget to install TouchScreen Tune if you are going to be using your TF201 with a stylus much.
If you plan to do a lot of note taking I would however suggest the keyboard.

I've been using the MiniSuit and it's awesome. Can easily separate/attach the dock without having to take the case on and off.

There are some nice pics of it here: http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/transformer-prime-accessories/14198-minisuit-leather-portfolio-impressions-pics-inside.html

I contributed a couple pictures further down in the forum thread. One which shows the amount of thickness it adds when everything is closed up. It just about doubles the thickness when it's all folded up, brings it to about the thickness of an average book.

Everything is easily accessible with the case on. Only downsides are the holes for the cameras sometime get out of alignment and of course the thickness of the leather if you're looking to keep it really slim.

I picked up a Roocase from Amazon and I've been very happy with it. Would be nice if there was some kind of case out there that you could use and not have to take off to use the dock.

Side note, I'm hoping this case will work for my Prime when it gets here...

I don't know about the T102. I have had a T100HA, which has similar specs, for the better part of a year. If MS office is your main use, then it is a pretty good tablet, at a very affordable price point ($270 US).

If you want a travel case, I love this one. Don't be scared off by the "basics" label, they make good stuff.

I don't use a during-use case though, so no help there.

What you need to know:

  1. Doing a full factory reset every once in a while will improve performance.

  • There are options to save your apps and their data. choose those for seamless backups
  • There is also an Asus Backup program. It wouldn't be a bad idea to do that to make sure you get ALL your data backed up every once in a while.

2a) If you're looking at doing file transfer of any sort (if just plugging it into your computer doesn't work), the free options are to:

  • set up a FTP with 'SwiFTP' or apps of the like
  • use your computer to set one up and use 'file explorer' (or another app) to access it.
  • Dropbox or Ubuntu One (my personal favorite)

2b) If you don't mind paying a bit for something (and it'd be helpful to have), get one of these. It's rather handy, but not for everyone.

  1. Go through all the pre-installed apps, and find out what they do. I was looking for a hand-written note-taking app and spent a long time looking before I realized there was one pre-installed.

  2. Go through all the options and find out what they do. There's a cool lock you can use for the bottom bar that's handy when watching netflix and taking notes.

  3. There's no way I could tell you everything you needed to know. My suggestion: Just go through r/asustransformer and read. This question is asked to death, and while you will get several replies of people saying a bit of what is important, it will greatly benefit you to read several posts of the type; more input etc.

The credit actually goes to this guy in the video. I just liked what I saw and searched for it on Amazon. I think they also have something for the older transformer.

u/Fenris78 · 1 pointr/asustransformer

Oh that's interesting - this?

I guess the only thing that might put me off that is the lack of apps like Netflix and cheap games. What are the options like on Windows?

That is very inconsiderate on the part of Amazon. I could have gone with another company that didn't lie about how many they would have in stock. Now I have to get in the back of the line with some other company.

Fora sleeve i got a 10 inch nameless Netbook sleeve from walmart. For actual pretection from scuffs and scrapes and wear, i got a tech skin. A little expensive but the screen protector is awesome and you can put as much or as little of the skin on as you want, with no bulk.

u/hahainternet · 2 pointsr/asustransformer

Q1: No, you cannot. The connection may be standard USB but it uses a USB-3 pin to negotiate a 15v charging regimen. In order to charge your transformer you will need a 15v DC adaptor and a converter to USB. However, you cannot use this to charge anything else as it may be dangerous.

Q2: HP Mini sleeves fit perfectly and have not much extra bulk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0038ISNR8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&m=A40SBHNYEJU70

I don't know about quality, but this case costs $.01 with $4.99 shipping, so it looked like a deal.

I use a TomTom bluetooth GPS dongle I got on ebay, and then use the Bluetooth GPS program from the app store, it works 100000% better than the stock GPS, the dongle addon, and even other phones.

>Also do you share your data from your phone or can you map out your ride with no data at all?

Both. I have my tablets tethered, but with Backitude and MyTracks running I do have "offline" logging. Backitude will cache my Latitude data then auto upload whenever I am back online, while MyTracks does the real logging with speed, altitude, etc. I also have a Garmin GPS going, I have MyTracks for the redundancy. Both the Garmin and MyTracks will export the track logs as GPX files that can easily be viewed in Google Earth or similar programs.

>Wouldn't it be easier to use an Android phone to do that?

I honestly I am at the point that I really am starting to hate Android. I've been phasing myself away from it including switching from Gmail to Hotmail, hell I now even use Bing as my primary search. The transition for the most part was easy with the Surface, and my phone is (no suprise) HTC 8X running Windows Phone 8.

I did recently pickup a cheap bad-ESN LG phone running Gingerbread, it seems to work good so I may be using that soon for random Android apps instead of carrying around the Tranny.

This case has been awesome. I also spent a long time looking for a sleek, nice looking, good quality leather case that would protect my screen. The best part about this one is that the tablet can rotate within the case. I absolutely recommend this one, but don't get too excited for the included stylus. It's a piece of dog shit.
