Welcome to the sub! You're the first poster here besides me!

The 1.25" and 2" rack-and-pinions are mostly made out of plastic, and trust me, you'll want to be able to use 2" eyepieces down the line. I'd recommend one of the following:

  • Orion 2" Crayford Focuser ($80) - Works very well and no plastic, but quite heavy and large and not contoured to a small tube (so you'll need to add spacers/shims.
  • GSO Single-Speed 2" Crayford ($105) - Lighter/smaller than the Orion, tool-free tension adjustments/locking, and uses compression rings instead of thumbscrews.
  • GSO Dual-Speed 2" Crayford ($135) - Same as the single-speed but with a fine adjustment knob. May or may not be necessary, especially with an f/8.
  • Moonlite CR Single-Speed ($165 + baseplate cost) - Lower profile than the Chinese Crayfords, lighter in weight, and overall better quality.

Some people like helical focusers, but they are confusing for beginners and are only really useful for niche uses (planet killers with minimal secondary mirror diameter or lightweight travel scopes).

Personally, I'd recommend getting the Orion if you're on a budget (it works just as well as the GSO). The large footprint and weight are annoying, but it works nearly as well as the Moonlite and compression rings are kind of just a gimmick.

I'm confused? You have an assignment to build a telescope to look at the sun, due in a few days? That is a weird assignment, can you please elaborate.

Building a telescope is usually a multi month deal. Do you have a primary mirror? Secondary? Eye pieces?

Or do you already have a telescope you would like to use to look at the sun?

Please be very very careful. Looking at the sun with a telescope can permanently blind you. There is a specialized material that is used for this. You can either buy a premade solar filter that fits on the end of your scope, or buy a sheet of this special material and make it into one yourself. I did this for the eclipse a few years ago and it was amazing.

Please do not try any other wierd method that does not involve this special material. You will go blind.

Here is a link to said material.
