Alien: Out of the Shadows (Full Cast Dramatization) takes place between Alien and Aliens, and reads like really well-done fan fiction. Laurel Lefkow sounds exactly like Sigourney. It's got some contrivances, but it's fun. (4.5 hours)

Bird Box by Josh Malerman, narrated by Cassandra Campbell is a literary post-apocalyptic horror story about a young mother trying to survive in a world where something outside will make you suicidal and homicidal if you see it. The characters spend half the story blindfolded. You won't get much in the way of monsters. In fact explanation and resolution are pretty thin, but it's very strong on tension. Cassandra Campbell's narration is one of the best I've ever heard. It's a little bit reminiscent of the recent film "A Quiet Place," and Bird Box has been made into a film being released this December. (9 hours)

The Dinosaur Four by Geoff Jones (me), narrated by Nick Podehl, is a B-movie adventure about ten everyday strangers in a cafe that gets sent back in time. There are lots of dinosaur attacks and one of the survivors is just as dangerous as the dinosaurs. (8 hours)

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, narrated by Robertson Dean is technically about vampires, but it's honestly the granddaddy of the modern zombie genre. It's a little dated (1954), but still a great read. (5.25 hours)

It by Stephen King, narrated by by Steven Webber is probably his best monster story, and one of his best books all around... but its a little longer than your road trip. (45 hours)

The Mist by Stephen King is one of my favorites, about a small group of people trapped in a supermarket when a monster-filled mist rolls int town. There's an unabridged reading at Audible narrated by Will Patton (5.25 hours) and a terrific full-cast recording you'll have to find elsewhere (1.5 hours).

Pines by Blake Crouch, narrated by Paul Michael Garcia is about a secret service agent investigating a small town where everything seems too good to be true. It feels like a mixture of The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, and Twin Peaks. The sci-fi and monster elements slowly appear in the first book but are a big part of the second and third. It's fast, fun read. (8.5 hours)

You by Caroline Kepnes, narrated by Santino Fontana doesn't have any supernatural monsters, but it's about a creepy-as-fuck stalker in New York City. The book is written from his point of view in such a way that you (may) actually end up sympathizing with him. Fontana's narration is fantastic. (11 hours)

(Honestly, out of all of these, Pines feels like the one I would recommend most for your trip!)

Best,

Geoff Jones

Author of The Dinosaur Four

Narrated by Nick Podehl

I've a few recommendations here, both about writing and about langauge as a whole

  • Cuneiform by Irving Finkel as a (very) short but nice introduction to Cuneiform. I enjoyed it a lot, especially since I couldn't seem to find other popularized introductions to the subject.
  • Empires of the Word by Nicholas Ostler. This is a behemoth, a world history in the context of languages. I love the book, although it can be a bit information heavy at times. The focus is on langauges, but comes with lots of nice examples of writing as well. (I found this book through The Language Instinct by Stephen Pinker, which is tries to describe language from a neurological PoV, an amazing book)
  • Breaking the Maya Code by Michael Coe, one of the players in the breaking of the Maya script. I didn't know a thing about mayan language or script before reading this, and albeit being too detailed on who-did-what, the mayan script is beautiful and this books documents this wonderfully.
  • The Riddle of the Labyrinth by Margalit Fox. The theme is similar as the one above, but this is focused on the decipherment of Linear B, where both script and language was unknown. Very recommended, especially in the methodology on how to catalogue large number of correlations between script pairs in the time before SQL...

I'm following this thread closely... :)

  • We Are Legion (We Are Bob) is a hilarious trilogy that is a bit cheaper to buy the kindle and then add on audio narration. Ray Porter, the narrator, makes his series amazing.

  • Off to Be the Wizard is a great series with good humor and can be less expensive if you buy the kindle and then add on the audio narration. I liked books 1-3, with 4 and 5 being not as great. The first books is well worth the purchase though!

  • Super Powereds Year 1. This is one of my favorite series. Kyle McCarley does an amazing job narrating this saga (4 in the main story and 1 side story that could stand alone). Probably the worst covers and really made me not want to read the series, but Drew Hayes has become my favorite author. Every series he does is pure gold.

  • Expeditionary Force: Columbus Day. RC Bray, sci-fi and lots of hilarious dialog when Skippy shows up (about halfway through the book). The series is great, and book 6 is coming out next week. Great starter price 0.99+7.49 for the kindle and audiobook.

There are so many more options like this, but I don’t want to overwhelm you! These may not all be your cup of tea. But they are some of my favorites for a somewhat reasonable price.

I've been finding Steven Gurgevich's hypnosis sessions really helpful. I've noticed a significant increase in my level of calmness since I've been listening to them. I've got Heal Yourself with Medical Hypnosis (general purpose; not just for medical issues) and Relax Rx.

https://www.audible.com/pd/Relax-Rx-Audiobook/B00B7M0QOU

Audible has several others and there are more on amazon in digital music. Even if the idea of hypnosis doesn't immediately appeal to you, maybe get a single session for 99¢, such as Progressive Relaxation, to see if you find it effective.

https://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Relaxation-Induction/dp/B01N5CYP0E

If you do decide to try this, I hope you find it as helpful as I do.

EDIT:

I also highly recommend Anna Wise's The High Performance Mind — an excellent set of guided meditations. And again, you can get single tracks for 99¢.

Thank you for the thorough explanation. I can see why OP can be a conflict for many people, but having the protagonists kicking the bad guy's ass seems like an enjoyable change.

Fyi for anyone else interested in this book, the Kindle version costs $4.99, and $1.99 audiobook add-on, which is basically the same as the Audible sale, but with the bonus of having both versions. Whispersync is my favorite reading method. https://www.amazon.com/God-Touched-Demon-Accords-Book-ebook/dp/B003G2ZCW0

I like the narrator for this story, clear voice, and a fun tone.

ps - I added this one to my wishlist to get soon, hope you didn't just get me hooked into a 15 book series! ;)

This is the only book that seemed in the neighborhood on Audible.

I looked in a big library catalog and found this one, which was published in 79 and might have some interesting stuff:

You may have stumbled on an untold story, which if true would be pretty awesome. You should write it!

I've been very happy with my Jabra Elite Active 65T wireless headphones. I use them in the gym, the shower, mowing the lawn (under ear muffs), and a ton of other places. The app has a nice equalizer that has an option that works good with audio books. I once had an issue with the sound only working on one side but once I discovered that there is a little tiny hole that needs to be occasionally cleared, I've been loving them.

I wish I had a suggestion for you, but I don't. My phone works well.

You didn't indicate which phone you have, so here's mine:

LG Harmony 2 phone, Android 8.1, up to date Audible app, bluetooth with speaker.

I use this speaker. A good value that has worked for years.

My friend wrote this:
https://www.amazon.com/Wizard-Wasteland-Book-post-apocalyptic-survival-ebook/dp/B0725V8PKN
I like the narrator he got for it, the book goes a bit gruesome for me to listen to but sounds like it might work for you! Kindle version is free so you might get reduced audible version.

u/Spatanky · 1 pointr/audible

Just started Expeditionary force, still chapter 1. Not grabbed me yet, but will give it time. Bobiverse was epic beyond imagination. I would add https://www.amazon.com/Singularity-Trap-Dennis-Taylor-ebook/dp/B07FBRRL2Z. It was absolutely riverting and funny and Dennis E. Taylor should just continue writing fascinating scifi books.

ASINs are the same, yes, I didn't realize they varied by region. My technique is to find the kindle book on .com and paste the ASIN into the .ca search to make sure I got the right version.

BUT, I just checked by random selection, and For Honour's Sake has the same Kindle ASIN in America, Canada, and Brasil, as well as other books by the same author. So maybe certain books are doable for you.

I have used alot of FM to bluetooth transmitters.
I love this one.

Roav SmartCharge F0, by Anker, Bluetooth FM Transmitter, Receiver, Car Charger with Bluetooth 4.2, 2 USB Ports, PowerIQ, and AUX Output (No Dedicated App) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJ7DHMP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Z3ExCbJEYBTS2

Thanks! For me it seems that book #1 has the same special:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EF8Z32I/ref=series_rw_dp_sw

How are these books? Is it worth picking up all 3?

In my previous car, I had the same issue and used a tape-deck adapter. https://www.amazon.com/INSTEN-Universal-Cassette-Adapter-Smartphones/dp/B00CRBA9D8 They work fairly well, but the cord usually wore out after a time. I also found a Bluetooth version in the past that kinda sorta worked, but I had Bluetooth connectivity issues that I now believe was my phone at the time.

I use something like this now: https://www.amazon.com/SmartCharge-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Receiver-Dedicated/dp/B07GJ7DHMP/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_3?keywords=roav+audio+adapter&qid=1549639180&sr=8-3-fkmrnull It has both a radio transmitter so you just tune to that channel, or aux out which is what I use. And then you can Bluetooth pair it to your phone. On my car, the power shuts off with the car so it will shut off when you turn off the car (which pauses the book), and come back on and pair automatically when you start the car up and then you just have to start the book.

You could possibly combine the too which I think would make the tape adapter last longer since you don't have to move it as much. I had mixed results with the FM adapter in the past. Mostly because you'll run into interference in spots either from other adapters or from radio stations in the same location.
