I liked HGTTG I felt Dirk Gently Detective Holistic agency fell a bit short of the mark but it had its moments. I loved “Infinity welcomes careful drivers”, the first book of the Red Dwarf series. I can only speak for the text version of the book, never read the audio book version but the humor is in the same style.

Edit: pointed to correct link.

I am currently re-reading, well, first time listening, through the Belgariad Series by David Eddings. It's an older series, but I cannot put the books down. He has other series that branch off of the main one as well. Here is a link to book 1. https://www.amazon.com/Pawn-Prophecy-Belgariad-Book-1/dp/B000VZPW5W/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=belgariad+series+audible&qid=1574892863&sr=8-1

If you haven't received a book from someone else, I can also gift you a copy. It really is one of my favorite fantasy series.

if you're in the US, look into overdrive. they team up with libraries to let you digitally borrow audiobooks. dunno if it's available outside of the US.

if you're not picky about what books you get, there are services like audiobook boom which give out specific free audible books in exchange for reviews. i've been using them 1-2 months now and haven't paid full price for a book in a while.

you can also checkout whispersync deals. sometimes it's possible to buy a kindle ebook for < 4$ and add on the audiobook for < 4$, which ends up being cheaper than just the audiobook. the most popular books are usually more expensive, so look into the lesser known authors. here's an example where the ebook is free and the audiobook is 1.99$ after you get the ebook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00APAH7PQ

Ah, I think I have the perfect book for you! Soul of a new Machine

I read it on paper when it was new and totally loved it. It's about the creation of a new minicomputer. Was taking an assy language course around that time. From the year 2000.

Here it is on amazon on cd:

https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Bernard-Malamud/dp/0786159197

It's narrated by Christopher Hurt. It won an AudioFile Earphones Award. Now I'm getting interested in it, too. :-)

There's actually two good dramatizations of LOTR.

One was done by a group under the "Minds Eye" label, with mostly American actors:

And the BBC one:

They're both great and done in different ways. Minds Eye has Bombadil, which I like. BBC has a more chronological version, with some details about Gollum's interrogation by Sauron.

Lenny Henry reading Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys

ETA: or Chris Barrie reading Grant Naylor's Red Dwarf

If you've ever seen the Red Dwarf series, Barrie played Rimmer, and is a consummate impersonator of the other actors. Lenny Henry's character work is also brilliant.

Computer origin gems:

Soul of a New Machine

The Cookcoo's Egg - this one is probably impossible to find in audio but honestly worth a read regardless.

several of the classics provide 99c audiobooks with the free kindle book. Check these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=amb_link_420460782_5?ie=UTF8&node=6522096011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Also Monster Hunter International has a free kindle book, providing a $2 audiobook, rather than the $4.95 of the sale.

If you are looking for Bluetooth headphones, I found these Anker ones to be amazing for the price. Comfortable and works well

If you prefer wired, I love the Bose noise cancelling ear buds. Expensive but they totally work!

I am listening to "Marked," book 9 of the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka. Narrated by Gildart Jackson.

https://www.amazon.com/Marked-Alex-Verus-Book-9/dp/B07DQQCVVX/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1565186166&sr=8-1

Book 10, "Fallen," will be released in September in the US. It's coming out a couple of weeks later in the UK.

I love listening to these books.

It's the consonants that carry meaning in speech. Whispers are easy to understand because frequencies under 5000 aren't really necessary.

Good headphones strive to be flat, cheap ones usually lack bass. But it might be a bargain for audiobooks. A hundred dollars of high-fidelity flatness would be wasted on audiobook, podcasts and talk radio. If it has great reproduction, I'm going straight to Settings to set a custom profile.

If you wear them all the time, bluetooth is important, so is discretion, battery life, and noise isolation. Also important, I'm going to lose them before they wear out. Right now I have a set of $26 Anker and they're good enough I don't think about them.
