I don't know.

Everyone here is suggesting these higher end ones. I did that for a while, but if you're like me, I try to shave every 3-5 days or so, at least once a week. With that kind of use, it's inevitably going to break down quick. Nobody wants to burn through expensive $50+ razors that quickly.

I do like how large that Remington brand one you posted is. It gets tedious when you're doing this routinely. Over and over and over. So that'll be a plus.

But frankly, recently, I went out of town on a biz. trip and we only had one debit card between me and the wife, -- so I just took $100 cash. I really wanted to shave before I had to show up in some meetings, my hair was long and badly straggly, and didn't want to deplete my food money. So I just hopped an uber to the nearest Wal-Mart and bought a $10 no-name brand one and I'm surprised how well it's worked so far.

I think, as far as electrics go, to some degree, cheap and disposable might be the way to go. Yes, it's a bit clunky, but it's not terrible. For the price difference, the more expensive ones will give you a lot smoother shave, but the cheap ones aren't THAT bad.

Everyone is different, but the ones /u/Zubster recommended. I don't know how someone would shave their head with those things. Those, in my head, are face razors. It seems like it would take a LOT of time to shave your head every few days with one of those.

And, for those type, you DEFINITELY HAVE to have your hair very short already before attempting to use one. You can't just stick one of those to 1/4" hair and expect that it's going to not start ripping hair straight from the follicle.

Maybe I'm wrong. I could be very wrong, in fact. But my suggestion, if you are just a beginner, why not just invest $20 in a cheap-o ... get the hang of it (and make sure it's going to be something you want to keep up). Figure out what kind of razor you want to use. And then go from there... Maybe something like this? This is about the cheapest one I could find that was on Amazon and also prime.

You can get some from a Wally World for about $12 that will work better than you think. Not a long-term solution, but, like I said!

Just looking at your user page, I too can see that we share the all too elusive 'capacity for critical and intelligent thought which aims to achieve higher and broader levels of consciousness and personal growth' ...on a good day at least...on the other days I go back and forth from one WTF extreme to another...Crazy times we're living in right? If you haven't heard of it this book Tools for Titans is just up your alley I bet...Here's the author Tim Ferriss on the Tonight Show ...Not only did the content and idea of the book itself hook me instantly, but I was amazed at how graceful and relaxed Tim Ferriss was from start to finish in this interview, he even managed to calm Fallon down which is no easy feat, it left me thinking "I want to do what that dude is doing" Thank you for the compliment; when I am tripping I tend to listen to Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan and The Grateful Dead, my thoughts probably couldn't be reigned in enough to write...are you some kind of chemist? I have a big 'Breaking Bad' style camper, let's get a bunch of rye berries, harvest the ergot fungus on them, then you do your chemistry thing and bring it back ala' Stanley Owlsley! haha

Thanks man, yeah some easy pointers on the beard. Get a good set of clippers - I use something like this and find a number you like to keep it trimmed to. I usually do a 4.

For trimming and shaping go ahead and get a couple cheap shaping tools and follow the instructions. I use something like this.

Lastly, if I want to make a change in the shape of my beard I start small. I will start with a quarter of how much I think I want to take it up and live with that for a day. I would way rather spend a few days making sure I get what I want than cut too much off in haste and have to restart.

Thanks dude! I just started cutting my hair bald for the first time this year. I found the best clippers where I don't have to use a razor and the hair looks super close: Andis T Outliner! I love em, I now shave my hair maybe every 3 days. Is that what everyone else is doing?

Definitely a good link. I’d add that ability to buy the blades in bulk is a huge bonus. I got a 4-6 month supply for about 20 dollars on Amazon. [Generic Blades](Gillette Atra Generic Blades - 96 Blades (16 x 6 Bulk Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NOXA7ZI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_K-VVCb3P754KP)

here you go friend!

The only thing about these is you’d have to shave every day or every other. There best used when your hair is already short(shaving a lot of hair off will wear the foils quick) but they really work well! I believe they’re usually $60 so they seem to be on sale. I know I’m coming off very shillish but after a year of cycling through different methods, these have been the best!

I had this issue when I first started shaving. I’m less bothered now, but the best thing I’ve found by a mile is Ben Nye neutral set colorless powder:

https://www.amazon.com/Ben-Nye-Neutral-Setting-Powder/dp/B01LMN47DE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=ben+nye+neutral+set+powder&qid=1572479900&sprefix=ben+nye+neu&sr=8-3

It’s what photographers use to mattify skin on set. If you get some of that and a cheap barbers brush (the kind barbers use to brush hair off the back of your neck), sprinkle some powder onto the brush and dust the dome, it will be matte. And the effect lasts quite a while. And so does the product. I’ve only used a third of a pot in 18 months.

I tried lots of moisturisers and powders and Ben Nye is the best in my experience.

I didn't have any issues with itchy-ness luckily, But I do seem to be getting razor burn as I have little bumps on the back of my head/forehead/where my hair used to be before it started receding lol. But I also use this Nivea Aftershave - It has been awesome and takes away any stinging after shaving. You should be able to get it just about anywhere. I've seen it at Rite Aid , Target and Walmart for sure. I also use this Nivea Shave Gel Neither of those products have alcohol in them so it helps with dry skin issues.

I have the Wahl Clipper Elite Pro High-Performance Home. I opted for the plug in rather than a wireless one, due to performance. I've had it just over a year and I love it. I use it both my head and beard with no guard. Works great, never snags, hasnt lost power. I oil it after every use. I'm pretty sure this will last for years. Here is the Amazon Link

My process. I shave my head in the shower but you may not want to, like to, or feel comfortable doing so.

  1. Shower with warm-hot water.

  2. Put on chosen type of shave cream, gel, substance. (I have been using this which has been wonderful)

  3. I use either a safety razor (this) when I am wide awake and alert, otherwise I use a plastic two blade bic.

  4. Short strokes with little pressure. This I cannot state enough as pushing too hard, taking too long of strokes makes you more likely to cut yourself and get ingrown hairs.

  5. Use your choice of aftershave balm. This is a personal preference. I find that if I don't I will sometimes get that annoying itchy burny feeling.

  6. When I wash my scalp I use a wash cloth and soap and scrub firmly. This has lead to my head having less ingrown hairs/pimples.

  7. Clean your blade. Get the gunk out from between the blades, and put it somewhere it can dry properly.

Bald life protip: If you are going this way get to learn your scalp. Your skull probably has bumps and ridges that you may not know very well yet. Get to know them as most of my early cuts were from trying to rush and the blade catching a little.

Shaving tip: Short, soft strokes with a sharp razor. I can't stress this enough.

Last tip: When beginning to shave your head do it when you have time. Don't do it before school or work do it before bed. Take your time and you will get a better feel for what works best for you.

Buy a real barber style set of hair clippers. They cost around $50 but totally worth it as it should last for years and will cut your hair way easier and more effectively than a beard trimmer. I use this myself and it does the job well - https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Balding-Clipper-8110/dp/B000VVT94G/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1524764730&sr=8-2&keywords=wahl+balding+clippers

I’ve tried many different ones over the years, some have been slightly better than others but one never really stood out. I bought this one about two months ago and this one definitely stands out. I feel like I get a good even cut every time and it’s lightweight and easy to use.

I posted this in one of the other subs.

Harry's Razor and King of Shaves shaving gel. I have always done mine in the shower and in the 30 years I've been doing it this is the best I've found and I've had great results.

u/Narsil86 · 2 pointsr/bald

Wahl professional balding clippers are a good price/quality ratio. Just oil them after every use (which you will find are the directions of any good clippers) and they should last many years. Been cutting my own hair without a guard for about 3 months now (they come with 2 guards) and I've never cut or hurt myself (some reviews of other clippers got so close they caused skin irritation, never had that problem).

Took me a month of looking for clippers on and off before I decided on these. Couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Good luck!

I love these cordless clippers. I just give myself a trim in the shower once a week before turning on the water. The resulting clippings are short enough that they just go down the drain.
Before or after, I clean up the neck line with a mirror and my shaving razor.

u/neoookami · 1 pointr/bald

A foil shaver can get you pretty close. I use a Panasonic Arc4 and it does the job pretty well, and much harder to accidentally nick myself. It's water proof so I just use it in the shower every other day and keep myself fairly smooth.

It works be running it under the hot water for a second or two - I end up holding it in my hand while I shave, and rinsing it and the razor at the same time. That way I can hold at funny angle too.

u/scottyloots · 1 pointr/bald

i just bought this and i LOVE it. gets suuper close and holds a great charge:

Any opinion on this?

I didnt mention it in the original post, I'm looking for a razor to pretty much get rid of stubble every couple days.

I've used an Andis Profoil Lithium shaver for the past year and I like it a lot. Easy maintenance and gets me smooth.

This is one of the best ketoconazole (anti-dandruff) shampoos. Compared to this head-and-shoulders did nothing for me.

Go for the Wahl Balding Clippers!

Go ahead, order them now, don't give it a second thought! https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Balding-Clipper-8110/dp/B000VVT94G

BTW...sounds like the new haircut is working out for you...how have reactions been?

u/FatHatCatBatSat · 1 pointr/bald

I clean it thoroughly each time, otherwise no special tricks to it. If you are really itching for an electric, I hear good things about the Wahl shaver a lot of barbershops use, but I have never tried it myself.

I use this and I love it. No cord, wet or dry, really nice blades on it. It's quiet and powerful and shaves smooth. Cuts hair like butter. A little pricey but these last for decades so it's a good longterm investment.

u/deadgreysn0w · 1 pointr/bald

You look fine, brother. For me, I've just replaced shampooing with shaving in the shower. It takes a couple extra minutes, but you get used to it. As far as missing spots, you can usually tell by touch. I personally own one of these to help with the front and sides. (especially that nook above the ears)

u/arafella · 1 pointr/bald

This should work well for you.

u/_olopops_ · 4 pointsr/bald

I shave about twice a week. I do a two step process:

  1. I will use Wahl balding to buzz off my hair.

  2. I use hair conditioner as shaving cream, lather on thick.

  3. I use my wife's Venus 5 blade razor to shave. You'll learn what way the grain of your head is. You'll also get a feel (using your hand/fingers) for when your head is smooth.
  4. Clean up the mess I've made in the bathroom.
  5. Jump in the shower and get cleaned up
u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/bald

That’s a fine look. Shave it down to a 1 and if I want to go closer go no guard. I use this.

How much worse it will get depends on you. The hair loss isn't going to stop unless you are willing to spend money on expensive and questionable hair-restoration treatments.

Alternatively, you can grab a good pair of clippers (I upgraded to these bad boys a few years ago and I love them to death) and take charge of not just your hair, but other people's perception of you.

Your choice.
