I transfer all the maps to a flash drive, and plug it into the https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0758C5TFR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 projector I ordered. It works quite well, and in our Summer room we hang the projector from the ceiling, and project it onto a magnetic dry erase board, so that we can draw adjustments directly on the board. This projector's lens is heavy enough, though, that gravity unfocuses it. The solution was some electrical tape on the dials to keep it in the sweet spot.
In the Winter room, it's basically the same thing, but the ceiling doesn't support the weight of the projector, so instead we have it propped up a bit and screw the dry erase board onto the wall and display it there instead. And since it's magnetic, you can use little 1 inch magnets as minis. Most magnet minis are ceramic, so you can paint them how you like, or go easy like we do, and put beer bottle caps on them instead. Perfect size.
Though, this way does present its own issues as well. The projector isn't high end enough to support high res maps, and when you zoom in, you can't see any more detail. It's just bigger. As well, maps will all be slightly different sizes based on the file dimensions, so your pieces won't always fit perfectly. But it's generally good enough to ballpark it.
Either way, though, I highly recommend magnetic dry erase boards. Especially for spur-of-the-moment mapping. The utility they provide is just too good.
Sure thing. User bartbartholomew commented this on another post: https://www.reddit.com/r/battlemaps/comments/c2lp20/dam_encounter_ive_been_experimenting_these_3d/ero6oq4?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x and that's the advise I followed.
I went on amazon and got these:
1"cubes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073HJB42K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sBadDbQDR9HWX (same as linked above)
2"cubes: https://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Cubes-Square-Projects-Woodpecker/dp/B01CGRPIEC/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=2%22+unfinished+cubes&qid=1561480314&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-3
The board I got at local arts & crafts store. May be cheaper at a hardware store, but the finish on that one was pretty nice.
AMAZING idea. I followed the link but found to my dismay the cost when buying in/shipping to Canada is much higher.
I did find an alternative on amazon.ca which seems to be very well reviewed, offer good uniform cuts, and are Prime delivery eligible. Posting for anyone interested.

I JUST ordered a box of 100x 1', and 12x 2", so I'll follow up with how well that goes when they arrive.
Hmm, ok. Maybe a tool like Camscanner (which I used to use to scan maps in) can do the same trick? (If you have Android look it up for taking pictures; I found it pretty handy.)
I just try not to deal with the lines at all by using engineering paper, which work by having the lines on the back so you can see through them, but the front is empty. Doesn't show up in scans or pictures at all. Nice now that I use a standard scanner for my maps to keep things relatively even and oriented properly.
This one. TLC 43" 4K UHD. On sale for $299 right now. I have the 43" for my D&D table and the 55" for my living room. Love both of them.
I use 1 inch hex gaming paper. I draw my map in sharpie and color it in with crayons. I use sharpies for things like walls, trees and objects. I used to use colored sharpies to color in grass and add texture, but the chaotic scribbling gave a lot for the eyes to look at. Recently I've been using Crayola crayons and they work great when used with the shapries.
Here is the paper I use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005420YHI/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1510377380&sr=8-10&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=gaming+paper&dpPl=1&dpID=51N1WTrjFkL&ref=plSrch
This is a smaller version of the same brand of tablet I use and is generally what I recommend to anyone looking to get into it. Obviously $100 is still a significant commitment, but if you're into it enough to be making these images with a mouse, I would say you've earned the cost of paying for a decent first tablet. I've had mine for about ~4 years now.

How much does it cost you to print / laminate this? I'm guessing it will probably be more expensive than a simple flip mat such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Paizo-Publishing-Pathfinder-Flip-Mat-Basic/dp/1601255381 (although it's just 24x30, so you'll need at leest two of those to get to your required dimensions)
FYI, Your example tiles link is broken.
example 6"x6" tiles works.
Is this what you are remembering?

How long ago did you see it? A lot of the second edition hell stuff was architecture made of tissue.

I'm interested to see what this post turns up.
For battle maps, in addition to the digitizing, you could also do geomorphs or something similar. You can get 4”x4” or 6”x6” artist tiles (example 6"x6" tiles) and can rearrange them as needed for your battle (though nothing is stopping you from doing the same with the larger pieces of paper, you just have to think more about the options for connecting them) The standard dungeon geomorphs have 4 or 8 connection points (usually hallways), but for battle maps that are more open, I'd look at having trees and walls that just tend to end at the same tiles.
