Here are a few tricks you can try to help with a feisty Beagle!

  1. Try massaging his paws for a few minutes before bringing out the clippers. Clip one nail, massage a little bit. Clip another, massage. Rinse repeat. It takes patience, but eventually he may let you speed up and clip them quickly.

  2. Try having a second person who the dog loves and trusts petting and loving on him. Let them give him treats so he knows what a good boy he is being!

  3. Try wrapping him in a blanket with only the paw you are working on and his head uncovered. This may simulate a Thunder Shirt (Warning, auto-play video when opened) and keep him calmer during the clipping. Don't wrap him too tightly or he may freak out over being unable to move freely.

  4. Try giving him a Peanut Butter Ball filled with peanut butter. Our Beagles will let you do almost anything to them (except take the ball) when they have this ball. This only works if your dog is the kind who doesn't run away with treats and toys.

  5. Take him on more frequent walks/longer walks on concrete. Obviously the effects of walking on hard surfaces can be detrimental so please keep moderation in mind. That said, walking on concrete or the street helps keep your dog's nails shorter for longer because they naturally wear away on the ground. This is NOT a replacement for trimming nails in any way. You still need to maintain their nails.

Lastly, I want to mention that grinders aren't very good for their nails - or ours for that matter. They weaken the nail making it more likely to split, splinter or break. Also, it is very easy to over grind. If you really feel like you'd like to dull his nails you can use a coarse grit human nail file (you would need to use the file as you would for human hands, filing in only one direction and not back and forth) or claw covers!

Let me know if I've gone off the rails! Good luck!

Mine use to do this all the time. She still does on occasion, but not nearly as much. We tossed the retractable leash and switched to a 6 ft. If she starts pulling I give her a foot leash, if she doesn't pull she gets more room. If she's still pulling after 50ish ft, we stop walking and 'reset'. I tell her to sit, then we wait and try to walk again in 10 or 15 seconds. If she continues to pull after doing that 4 or 5 times, we turn around and go home.

I love this leash. It's a little big for her, but it fits my hand perfectly. And it doesn't hurt my hand when she does pull. They have a nice selection of colors in a wide variety of sizes. If you do decide to get one, double check the size before ordering.

My Bessie was prone to getting ear infections until we started using Zymox Otic Pet Ear Treatment (https://www.amazon.com/Pet-King-Enzymatic-Solution-Ounces/dp/B0025YOJXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1467907759&sr=8-3&keywords=dog+ear). We clean her ears once a week with this during the spring and summer months, and less frequently the other months (we live in New England). This is a good video that shows how to clean their ears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4odbAlDRiz0. She hasn't had an ear infection since we started using the Zymox 2+ years ago. Good luck! :-)

I have had good luck with the Outward Hound Invincibles line. They have lasted quite a while for my beagle. Plus they have squeakers that keep squeaking even if they get holes in them. I have some of these that are months old.

I've also been happy with the goDog line of toys that have "ChewGuard Technology" These don't last quite as long as the Invincibles but will work for a decent amount of time.

There is the KONG line of toys as well but my beagle has never liked to play with them. He gets the treat out in about two minutes and quits using it. They will last basically forever though if your beagle will play with one.

There's probably something in his past that causes him to react like that. I would try to avoid needing to wake him if possible.

In circumstances where you do need to wake him, bring an extra extra smelly treat with you (liver, salmon -- or something like this: Zuke's Salmon Treats). Stick the treat in front of his nose and I would bet he wakes up in a better mood.

It works well and has an easier and more difficult setting. He loves it and it keeps him stimulated - cause he’ll do anything for food (but not much else) 😂

Amazon has a good selection. I bought this for my beagle for the winter time, it is wind and waterproof which is nice as he likes to stay outside all day. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M2HCGYW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My beagle/chihuahua mix LOVES these Kong Squeez toys. They are the only rubber toys/balls I have been able to buy for her that she doesn't destroy. She's also a big fan of rope toys!

He's a cutie! Mine doesn't really have a smell, a few people have commented on her not having 'that' beagle smell. I bathe her fairly often & I use an oatmeal shampoo/conditioner to keep her skin happy. She's 11 years old & I've been using this brand most of life. She's suuuuper soft, too!

I was recently in a shop that had hand towels with dogs of various breeds embroidered on them. All the dogs were sitting pretty, then I found the beagle towel and he is going "baroo!"

I really like this kind Glove Brush. Those little nubs do a great job of holding the hair, and you can pull it off the glove in a mat to throw it away.

I use a Stunt Puppy with my little guy and he seems to do just fine! It takes a little bit of time for him to stop sniffing at the beginning of our run, but once we get running he seems to do just fine.

This leash is nice because it doesn't drag him if he decides to take a quick sniff break.

Growing up I had two beagles, and we used a bowl like this one here. Also, we would water down half the kibble so it was kinda soft/mushy and then mix in the hard half, and that seemed to help too.

Cool thanks! Found them on amazon

I have three beagles. They have gotten better, but I still can't get a dog pillow to last more than a month or so. I bought [one of these beds ](The Original Elevated Pet Bed By Coolaroo - Large Brunswick Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P7JKD6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_do0KybD1EH1WZ) about a month ago and not so much as a scratch on it. I think they really liked pulling the stuffing out of pillows and since there is no stuffing on this one, they aren't overly motivated to chew.

Edit: I'm on mobile. Worried the link did not post properly. Here you go, just in case

I use the freedom harness
You can buy a leash as well and have it attach on the front and back for extra help steering.

I have a recommendation! There are these faux sheepskin toys on Amazon, we got my beagle one on sale to begin with, and it took him months to go through. And he loves them. He just sits and gnaws at it most of the time, but he has also tossed them around and played tug with them.

Now, he did eventually get through it, but it took a long, long time. We have 2 whole ones and one torn one right now. It comes in different shapes and sizes. We started with the bone, but got a man and a ball too.

Sounds like a beagle to me. Went from a Lab previously, one of the most outgoing breeds, and thought I had a broken dog. Nope, they just have an insane sense of smell and food is central to who they are. Being in the room with you is all they really want.

As to tripping in the kitchen, this gate has been a lifesaver.

I've used Zymox with good results.
