So it is an odd way to do it, at least I think, but this is the style of brush

Beard Brush & Comb Set for Men Care - Gift Box & Friendly Bag - Best Bamboo Grooming Kit for Home & Travel - Great for Dry or Wet Beards - Distributes Balm for Growth & Styling - Adds Shine & Softness https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FYL7L2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JbdbBbHJ35EXN

And this is the wax make sure to get the 2oz so the can is a little wider than the brush

Wild Willie's All Natural Mustache and Beard Grooming Wax For Men - The Only Hard Wax with 7 Organic Ingredients for All Day Strong Hold While Treating Your Mustache at the Same Time. 2 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018USVCLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EddbBb551YWH3

Why mustache wax? - it is much firmer and it stays in the beard longer for all day styling.

NOTE - I have a pretty long beard and have never once experienced the heat itch or summer itch people warn you about. I feel this is due to washing the beard daily with shampoo, conditioning with coconut oil hair conditioner at least 3 days a week, and using this brush and wax mix.

How to - hold the brush in one hand and the wax in the other. Place the wax onto the brush and twist back and forth on the brush making a thin layer.
Starting at the top of your beard brush up until you look like Doctor Robotnik from Sonic the hedgehog.

Again starting at the top brush the top of the beard down into the bottom of the beard but pulling out from the face to get a good length / shape.

Use a separate small brush to then shape your mustache onto the beard for a bit of separation and heavy wax in the mustache. This helps prevent the eating problem a lot of new comers see.

Just what I do, not an expert j

The link posted already is solid. I also bought a set of 3, but actually I've found that if you only want to buy just one to start then you can get this one which is 10 dollars and has wider teeth on one side and finer teeth on the other half. Originally I didn't like the design but it is actually super functional because I can use the fine side for stache top lip and maybe even side burns. And use the wider part for the first passes through the sides. Plus the small mustache comb in the 3 pack is good, but it's much too small to be practical for me because I can only use it on my stache so I don't really need it.
All of the Kent combs are awesome, and if you have a longer beard then this portable comb or this rake comb will get deeper into your beard.

Honestly you can't really go wrong with Kent because even the fine toothed combs glide through my curly beard super easily especially when it's wet and/or has oil or balm in it.

It all depends on the quality of the oil you were using. Or maybe it contains an ingredient your skin is sensitive to. Also, are you shampooing with bar soap or hair shampoo? That can also cause blemishes since it dries the skin. Those soaps are too harsh for the face, it strips your skin of its natural oils.

Usually, natural beard oils clean out the pores and prevent blemishes from happening. It's a new concept that oil cleans the face. The difference is that blemishes are caused by clogged pores, it can be dirt or any other particle that clogs it and then the natural sebum of the skin collects, causing a tiny infection thus a pimple.

I wrote a beard article based on the ingredients of a good product. here is a quote " coconut oil rich in lauric acid known for its antimicrobial properties, leaving your beard refreshed as well as allowing the oil to penetrate the skin easily without leaving a greasy residue."

Cheap oils contain additives such as silicone which clogs the pores. There are many brands online that are good, natural, organic, etc. Don't cheap out for sure.

Check out HiLée on Amazon. We have many natural, organic and cruelty-free options for the bearded man. Beard shampoo plus oil

I had the same issue. Now I'll use a liberal amount and then comb it so it takes that snotty, greasy look out and distributes the wax all the way through it.

I had a chapstick one and it worked great for like 20 minutes. Now I use This.

The primary stuff works great and is pretty damn strong, and if you want to go for the super strength the secondary wax is crazy strong.

I am no expert, other than my almost 2 yeard. Here is what I do & I do not have problems with itchy, dandruff, etc.

Clean:
I use Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap. http://www.amazon.com/Grandpas-Soap-Co-Pine-Ounces/dp/B00028LN1K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373586004&sr=8-1&keywords=grandpa+pine+tar

I use it for my head, beard, and really, everything else. Never use dandruff shampoos. This is great for the whole body, and easy to bring with you.

u/IcemanBlizz · 2 pointsr/beards

I got this trimmer. It's decent but my beard is over an inch in length so I ordered a Wahl Elite Pro here. Hopefully it will work out well.

I see that there is a Philips Norelco All-in-one device. Frankly, I'd rather have a great shaver and a great clipper instead of one good combo.

u/infernalaanger · 3 pointsr/beards

I definitely would stay away from shampoos, their only job on this earth is to strip oils from your hair which dry out the hair and skin.

I would recommend oiling daily with light oils that are easily absorbed into the skin and hair, e.g. Argan, Jojoba, Coconut, or Almond oils.

Add a few drops of this as it has Vitamin E and Aloe Vera in it which is great for the skin. Make sure you get it worked into the beard enough to reach the skin to help moisturize and nourish it.

Good luck!

I agree, I posted about this a while ago and got shot down, but here are the 2 i seem to be alternating between.

Hollywood Beauty Tea Tree Oil

[Hollywood beauty Vitamin E Oil]

Both available in the ethnic hair care products section at Walmart

Not really what you asked for, but if you genuinely don't hate the beard and just wish it were less unkempt, I second Mabe's advice of getting him some beard care stuff. I'm a big fan of Honest Amish's conditioner - softens a bit and makes it a bit more manageable. Also, this comb is fantastic.

u/Treypyro · 2 pointsr/beards

I personally use this beard comb and brush and Honest Amish Beard Oil. I really like the way Honest Amish products smell.

When I first started growing my beard I watched the Beard Baron on YouTube. He's got some great videos on how to take care of your beard.

u/DoomTaru · 1 pointr/beards

i thought you meant a conditioner you use in the shower (which i would recommend.) Unfortunately, as others have said, your wife is right in this case... as both products you ordered i would consider after-shower brush-in products to help your beard be more manageable, and shiny. I too just ordered some beard products after reading this sub and getting inspired. I'm going on a yeard but my type of growth tends to be very curly/wirey and mostly grows in thickness as opposed to length. I'm hoping to "relax" it a bit with these new products. I would suggest finding a good shampoo/conditioner for the shower then choose either the conditioner or oil to brush in afterwards. here's what i ended up getting: bar shampoo for the shower, after-shower beard balm, and this brush i have a nice conditioner that my wife bought me for xmas that i use in the shower. any other suggestions i'm all ears

I've only had the beard for some number of months now. I've been using "Honest Amish" brand. There might be better brands out there, but it got good reviews on Amazon and it has worked just fine for me.

It has a faint licorice scent.

I use a pea-sized dab of the balm and emulsify it in my palm, then work it through my beard when it is still slightly damp. Then just a tiny bit of the wax on the moustache, after warming it between the fingers. The tin is seriously like a lifetime supply.

The wax isn't a true mustache wax that hardens, but I find it suits my needs. Additionally, you could use it on the beard itself to tame any strays.

I've only tried two balms and three oils (that I can recall). I like Grave Before Shave oil and balm. You can get them pretty cheap on Amazon. I've used Dollar Beard Club stuff and it's ok but not that good. You're better spending a few bucks more. I've never used the really expensive oils so maybe they're worth it but I'm too cheap to spend $50 on half an ounce of oil to rub into my beard.

I really like this comb. I bought one, used it for a week and bought three more. It has a naturally woody smell to it but if you use oil or balm it will pick up that scent and it holds some in so you can comb your dry beard and it will shine a bit from the leftover oil in the comb.

u/suxer · 0 pointsr/beards

I bought the following:

Oil.

Brush.

Balm.

I like all three of those, though I think there surely are better brushes.

I didnt really mind the prices, some people here will say that you can make your own oils and balms or use plain coconut butter/oil.

Im not much of a handy DIY kinda guy, so a couple of bucks on beard care product wasnt a big deal to me.

u/EricDeuce · 2 pointsr/beards

I like my cheap one from Amazon Think it works like a charm. Does take a while, so it adds some serious time to getting ready.

I also don’t use it everyday because I’m not trying to fry what I’ve got.

For what it’s worth I can almost guarantee the guys featured in the advertisements are not using the products being sold.

u/Thedapperpappy · 1 pointr/beards

The secret to all of my Santa bearded wonder lies here...This stuff is great. One bottle has gotten me about five or six uses out of it. Easy to put on, easy to wash out. It is a stage makeup, suggested to me by a friend.

https://www.amazon.com/Mehron-WHITE-Professional-Washable-Theatrical/dp/B018HF794E/ref=sr_1_8_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1481225942&sr=8-8&keywords=white+stage+makeup

u/Jordak_keebs · 2 pointsr/beards

It takes about 3 months of growth to get the mustache long enough to play with its shape.

Definitely invest in some moustache wax. I use [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/CanYouHandlebar-Premium-All-Natural-Secondary-Moustache/dp/B00O5G0IS4/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1495631558&sr=8-5&keywords=canyouhandlebar).

I use the primary wax daily, to keep the mustache out to the sides. I use a bit of the secondary wax on the tips, and to smooth out any stray hairs when I really want it to stand out.

Regarding trimming: I don't like the 'stache to obscure my smile, or obstruct eating. After applying the wax, I will trim any bristles that protrude over the lip.

u/shootingtsar · 2 pointsr/beards

I like the Kent comb

Feels great, doesn't scratch, and doesn't leave the hair stretched out and and staticy like some of the cheaper ones I've used.

u/Napius · 1 pointr/beards

Sure!

This is the brush I ended up with:

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07D7M7J45/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_Szu7CbNAY5AX0

I had my eye on a few, and they kept changing prices. This one ended up being the cheapest when I was ready to order, but it has worked out well. I think the smaller size is nice for the face.

Then this is the Argan Oil I got:

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B076VTHJZ5/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_Qzu7CbSBQ5FDP

You can get any Argan Oil though. Just grab whichever 100% Argan Oil is cheapest. I only use a couple squirts each time, so it is lasting me forever.

u/Vindalfr · 2 pointsr/beards

Jojoba Oil is magic, great for daily use for wax I tend to use this for some gloss and whatnot. In fact, I actually add Jojoba oil to the beard gloss just to get it to spread through the beard better and then use it straight on the mustache for some light hold.

u/bigd0g · 2 pointsr/beards

You need help choosing a cheek line. Check your neck line while you're at it. Also, take a look at the Remington MB-4040 trimmer. Good luck!

u/jrv8531 · 1 pointr/beards

I will definitely look into this.

Edit: I just bought this comb:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MN6LVG2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_ayitDbNYZ1AHZ

I will post updates in the next couple of days if it worked.

Thanks for the help u/jongon832!

I've seen some Tea Tree Oil that smells kinda weird. This is what I use and it works great and smells fantastic.

u/bcgpete · 1 pointr/beards

I agree. I recently bought this and it makes my beard look like a teenage girl's hair in the 80s on a humid day. I need something better!

u/Texxeon · 1 pointr/beards

I recently bought this beard straightening brush: https://www.amazon.com/Aberlite-Beard-Straightener-Straightening-Brush/dp/B07MN6LVG2

Worked pretty well but thinned out my beard. I don't want to use it much because I don't want to damage my beard hair and until I get it shaped it looks very inconsistent when straightened lol

u/Used_Taco · 2 pointsr/beards

I've also tried Burts Bees. I liked both but I think the honest Amish might've been cheaper.

As far as making your own oil, yes I just use dropper bottles like these . I just mix all the oils together in the bottle and shake, no need to let it sit. You do want to boil the bottles beforehand and let em dry to kill bacteria. Most essential oils have a spout thingy that makes it easy to count drops.

Edit: I also make my own beard shampoo.

u/mistergiantacorn · 2 pointsr/beards

I’ve started using this beard oil to help shape it and alleviate some dry skin issues I’ve had. I got this beard comb/brush set to help try to keep it somewhat tame.

I’ve only started recently trying to grow it out longer so still a work in progress! I have a Wahl trimmer I use to get any crazy hairs that don’t want to cooperate hah

u/freestylesno · 1 pointr/beards

Having just gone though this with mine, it does go a way a little with length. what i did was grow it out really long and then trim just the sides down. The best thing i found was beard wax and then pulling it down though out the day. Also watch how much you shampoo it.

u/thibit · 1 pointr/beards

Free? Hahahahahaha...

u/Casanova-Quinn · 1 pointr/beards

Solid stache. I'd suggest a getting a moustache comb to keep it neat and out of your mouth.

u/BigBattleCat · 12 pointsr/beards

I've burned through oils, man. It's just not worth the investment. I get beard balm and the coconut oil. Shower --> apply coconut oil to wet beard. Let dry ---> apply beard balm to dry beard. Comb out through every stage.

Good looking beard! As an owner of a Persian beard, I find just a little bit of gloss can help reduce the waviness of my beard and makes it look much more legit. Just a thought. Also I realize the product is expensive for how little you get, but you really don't need to use that much to see a difference. Let me know if you try it!
