Paper: For the clear paper, I've recently been using an acetate alternative called Dura-Lar by Grafix. They USED to carry them at Michaels but you are more likely to find them at locally owned art stores. Pen: Next, you'll need an Ultra Fine Sharpie in black (Extra Fine is also acceptable if you can't find Ultra). This will trace the pattern on your paper without smudging it. Link: Ultra Fine Sharpie Permanent Marker


Brushes: You'll also need paint brushes! If you look at the link provided after this, the brown brushes on the left side of the picture are perfect for dabbing in larger areas. The brushes on the right are great for getting into sharp corners or tiny spaces (which these BOI ones did). You don't need this specific set, art stores will have individual brushes that'll work great. Get 5 or so in different sizes. Paint Brushes


Last but not least, you'll want a wide assortment of Acrylic paints. Brands like Cermacoat, FolkArt and Deco-Art Americana are perfect because they're thick enough and vibrant enough. Tips and more thoughts: Trace you design (you'll probably need to go over it twice to make it dark), flip over the acetate and dab the in paint. Dabbing is important because it leaves it thick and doesn't create streaks. Colors will dry lighter or darker, so you can either remove wet paint with a napkin or dry paint by using your fingernail to scrape it off in the specific area. It's okay if you go outside the lines because you can use your nail to push paint back into the right spot.


Hold up the cel to the light and you can see where the paint is thin and needs another coat. Dab in more paint until you cannot see through it when you hold it up.


For the Isaac cells, I drew in all the shaded areas and removed the marker lines with a wet toothpick or hard part of a Q-Tip. Rub it into the marker area and it'll disappear, leaving only the shaded paint:

Hmm, what else? Oh, use wood toothpicks to paint in sharp corners. It makes them precise and nice-looking if you're removing some lines later!

If you have any other questions, let me know! Like I said, I'm really bad at explaining things and I've been doing this for a really long time, so I tend to forget to explain steps. These are great for kids to make, and make nice gifts to be framed. They can be quick to make, or take a really long time. The most complex one I made was the album cover to "The Resistance" by Muse and took 6 months and over 100 hours to complete.

I'll shill for my own company and recommend the Nimbus. I admit I'm a biased source but it is really an excellent Bluetooth controller.

You can try to get some of this stuff and effectively put a ring around your thumb to be able to get grip with it. I've used this stuff for a while to wrap cards in various board games, and have slowly been using it for other things as well.

But what has helped for me while playing on Vita is tipping it downwards. Seems to put a better angle on my wrist/thumbs and I get less fatigue that way.

I'm gonna add a second question, which controller are you using?
The one I used doesn't work anymore, I can't find another one or a controller that has a good d-pad. Is that one good enough?

Don't get an Ipega controller. I bought one that looks more like a 360 controller from them and it doesn't work with Isaac on iOS and instead acts like a keyboard for some dumb reason. Its a piece of cheap Chinese junk. I returned it and got this instead and it works great. I remember a tweet from Tyrone a while back saying the iOS version is MFI compatable so Isaac may only work with MFI certified controllers.

Just to make sure, is this one Amazon US? I'd really like to know, so I don't accidentaly buy a not-release edition :D

The "normal" boards (29x29) link together, so you can go pretty much as big as you have space for. All of these particular items fit on one board each, except for one column on Pop. Otherwise there is this giant board:

This is about the size of 2x3 normal boards. An issue here is the size allows it to warp pretty easily while you are ironing. This can be nice for bigger pieces, but plan on using masking tape to lift it off the board before ironing. Another downside is these don't link together, so you if you need bigger, you are stuck using that many more smaller boards.

Just to throw it in, I found the board that comes on the iPad app kit is something like 27x33, so in some cases (like Pop), I could use that and not have to use two boards or the giant one. Downside is that it has handles that get in the way of ironing. I may just cut/snap them off.

A lot of the suggestions and ways of looking at problems (the 'lenses' in her book) apply to Isaac, and Isaac actually has a lot of good things going for it in those terms.
