Are you more frustrated by the fact that there are multiple endings, or that the endings are unsatisfactory and anticlimactic?

For the former, as others have pointed out, save scumming is an easy way around having to replay multiple times to get each ending. It's nice if you're short on time.

For the latter, well...expecting Souls games to have a powerful ending that ties the story together and gives you a sense of accomplishment will always leave you disappointed. The endings are meaningful and thought provoking, but it's in the same way that the rest of the story is: obscure and relying heavily on interpretation. But now you have the exciting opportunity to reflect on what happened and try to understand its implications, and to read what others have posted here about it. :)

As for using guides...yeah, it's a tough call. If you're okay with needing to replay a game a few times to 100% it, then skip the guide. If not, I recommend trying to find a spoiler-free guide to help you make sure you don't miss much. Personally, what I find most infuriating is the easy-to-miss NPC questlines.

Congrats on the baby, and good luck! To maximize your leisure time as a Dad, I highly recommend this book for sleep training: http://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Hours-Sleep-Weeks-Step/dp/0525949593. Worked like a charm for us over the last 2 years. Getting them onto a sleep schedule that gives you a few free hours a night is a life-saver!

So, as far as writings similar to the series, you, of course, have Lovecraft. His writings that most resemble Bloodborne has to be The Dream-Quest of Unknown Khadaf. They reek of the Nightmare Frontier and the beings there are the most similar to what we see as Great Ones in the BB universe. The second tie-in has to be The Shadows over Innsmouth for the fishing hamlet and many other tropes in Bloodborne. The last one, The At the Mountains of Madness is basically the premise of humanity in its current state. I personally can say that almost everything Lovecraft has written can be 'adjacent' to the BB universe. But those three appear to be the direct link.

As far as other authors? Lord Dunsany is a well-known contributor to the creation of fictional universes. It's his writings that inspired Lovecraft as well as Tolkien and Frank herbert. As a bit of recent writings, House of Leaves is one of my favorite books.

Moving over. Did you know that Bloodborne is Japanese? It is (Lol)! and was inspired by a host of authors. The most telling of which happens to be Junji Ito and his work, Uzumaki. In the work, a series of strange happenings all involving a spiral end up making a town go crazy. He's also famed for his other works, Tomie and Gyo. The Enigma of Amigara Fault is also quite popular. Uzumaki is being made into an anime by Toonami.

There also Berserk. It has less of an impact on the series compared to Dark Souls but is still well-liked overall. The Executioner Wheel and the Hunter's Mark seem to come directly from it.

There's a Fan Comic, mostly about Gehrman's relationship with Maria. I like it quite a bit. Guy Davis's, The Marquis is so similar to Bloodborne you can just outright stick it in the universe and not bat an eye.

As far as movies there's not a whole lot. Angel's Egg seems to be the direct inspiration tonally and we know it's on the minds of From software. Brotherhood of the wolf is the direct inspiration for ALL the clothing of Bloodborne. The Cainhurst Noble set is actually taken from the series. I actually don't care for it. But you might like it. Bram Stoker's Dracula seems to be another inspiration, specifically to Cainhurst. I'm not a huge fan of that either. I'm much more a Van Hellsing sort of guy.

You might enjoy Made in Abyss but its less the tone and more mad science. I'm reading it right now.

I hope you find this interesting and check out some of it. I actually bought the physical copies of almost everything on this page. Money well spent! May the good blood guide your way.

I am a filthy casual able to play 3/4 hours per week. It took time but I am three trophies from Platinum. I would strongly encourage you not to give up. All the bosses can be cheesed (look up videos on YouTube) or head to /r/rhutnersbell where many will help you. Get the strategy guide or look up the one true wiki.

Bloodborne is fantastically rewarding when you get good enough to defeat a boss. The adrenaline rush, the sense of achieving something, and the sheer joy of finally getting good is wonderful. No matter if you cheesed, read up, or whatnot: your skill is what got you there! Few, if any, games are like that.

I actually just upgraded my hard drive and did a bit amount of research into it. Depending on the specs, there are definitely some differences in load times but all in all they are pretty negligible. Look for articles on IGN or others that will give you rest results. You will have to spend 200-400 for a nice one and still will save only 5 seconds or so on load times. I went for this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I8O6OQ4. 2 TB for about 100 dollars and great reviews as far as compatibility and performance.

Here's a good Article: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-ps4-hard-drive-upgrade-guide

OP add this link for Amazon (this comment will be buried), it's $2 more than the PS+ price but people can gift the code to friends or buy it with gift cards/credit they already have with Amazon, like me. Might help a few people.

I usually lean towards less deep games for a game night, unless everyone there is 100% hardcore gamer. I think the BB card game would be best with a bunch of friends who know the IP.
Off-theme, but I usually recommend the game Skull or King of Tokyo. They're both great, whether the group is new to tabletop games or wants something lively with a competitive edge.

u/NanoSpore · 1 pointr/bloodborne

Yep! Pretty fun, too, IMO. It's both a cooperative and competitive game and pretty easy to get the hang of.

I'm loving the mutton chops and green round rim glasses on mine

You can get it from Amazon Japan, cost me around $55 Canadian with shipping. It's a nice book, good quality and all that. The only negative, as mentioned in another reply, is that the English text is very hard to read on many of the pages due to the combo of page color (black) and text color (red). That said, it's a quality book and great if you're looking for concept art.

It's easy to order, just set the site to English, create an account with an International address and you're good to go. Delivery took about 1 week from ordering.

I tried many grips but I wasnt happy with them, so I decided to get these instead - http://www.amazon.com/2-Pack-Controller-Analog-Sticks-Dualshock-OneSoul/dp/B00IZSTNKW they fit DS4 perfectly fine and I can't recommend them more! They don't slip even in long gaming sessions.

Please be warned, to actually change them for the original ones you need to disassemble the controller first - which causes to loose the warranty.

u/Taftimus · 1 pointr/bloodborne

If you do and need any help getting the audio to set up let me know. Here is a link to the card that I have but the model below it. Its about $30 cheaper but has the same inputs and decibel output.

I honestly wish that I had gone with this one because I have never used that volume controller and I don't have studio headphones so I have no need for it.

It has some pretty good tales in it

Buy this one: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Fiction-Lovecraft-Knickerbocker-Classics/dp/1631060015

It's very cheap for a very good looking hardcover/tome. Fit's the lovecraft mood perfectly. Bought a similar one for Edgar allan Poe

u/SuckItCaldwell · 2 pointsr/bloodborne

I recommend this: http://www.amazon.com/Necronomicon-Weird-Lovecraft-Commemorative-Edition/dp/0575081570
it is a good collection of some of his stories and is a good jumping off point.

ahh sorry sorry, I forgot the part about where I bought the DLC from Amazon and redeemed the voucher code from the US account that I created (created a US account because the game was from the US region).

https://www.amazon.com/Bloodborne-PlayStation-4-Digital-Code/dp/B00UZJFK5Q/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_367_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8VPWG1ECDF5XGY5QRTV7

There's the DLC on Amazon, they give you a code that you can redeem if you go to the US account and go to the PlayStation Store using that account, then find the Redeem option, enter the code (they do not require you to associate your card at this step, I still have no card associated), and you will get that the DLC has been redeemed, now make the US account primary and you can use any other account on the PS4 to play the stuff that your primary account bought

Has anyone played the bloodborne board game?

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01HYVKY80/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1492441638&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bloodborne&dpPl=1&dpID=51J0iBOencL&ref=plSrch

I'm interested in it, but 3-6 players could be a deal breaker because I would be playing it almost exclusively with one buddy. Any thoughts?

Game of the Year Edition. Only released in Europe, but I believe you can play it on a North American PS4, if Amazon Q&A is to be believed.

It's a great artbook.

Yeah I preordered the collectors edition from GAME - they're really reliable for release day delivery.

Wondered about getting this guide book as well, but cannot find out more about it:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/3869930691/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1426463372&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=bloodborne

Has anyone had a guide book from this publisher before and If so what sort of quality are they?

u/CarmineRed · 1 pointr/bloodborne

Playstation Lifestyle says May 23rd as according to the Amazon listing, however the current Amazon listing says June 13th.

The article is probably outdated, as it seems they had to push the release date back for it.

u/Hollowed_Be_Thy_Name · 1 pointr/bloodborne

Are you sure? It says 255 here for the Japanese one.

I have the english one and it's the same amount of pages.

Hello! I usually use Gamecrawler to compare game prices: http://www.gamecrawler.co.uk/compare/bloodborne---game-of-the-year-ps4/B0188QFSHC

According to this, the cheapest you can get (excluding shady sites) is around £40 from Amazon, for the GOTY edition.

u/alcese · 2 pointsr/bloodborne

Sounds like you're after "Bloodborne Official Artworks".
http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product/4048657984/ref=topnav_switchLang/376-3828260-8567115?ie=UTF8&language=en_US
(They'll ship to most places in the world; you may be able to find another source that has cheaper shipping for you.)

The book itself is all art and apparently has English text alongside all the Japanese, but mine has yet to arrive so I can't 100% confirm that.

u/Phineasfogg · 3 pointsr/bloodborne

HP Lovecraft is the most obvious literary destination. If you've never read him you're in luck, as there are two more or less complete collections of his work: if you're a stickler for accuracy try this one and if you want to get something beautiful but with some typos and errors you can order this exquisite leather-bound edition (even its marbled endpapers hide monsters).

In terms of more modern stuff, Jeff Vandermeer's Area X trilogy is some of the best Lovecraft-infused fiction I've read. Which is no surprise when you know that his wife is the current editor of Weird Tales, one of the first places to publish Lovecraft. Indeed, they've actually put out an anthology of Lovecraftian short stories by all sorts of writers, old and new, including Lovecraft.

In terms of movies, I hope at some point Guillermo del Toro will get to make his At the Mountains of Madness film, but the fact that he hasn't speaks to the difficulty of a) financing expensive R-Rated horror movies b) parsing Lovecraft's gloomy visions with hero-driven narrative. One of the few films to nail the tone, even if its execution leaves something to be desired, is Frank Darabont's The Mist.

u/boko03 · 1 pointr/bloodborne

Unfortunately the interview was in the Future Press strategy guide (here's a link to the book's Amazon page) so to my knowledge there isn't an online interview to link to. The images that Estaim posted appear to be from the guide.

Buy that shit right now! I payed over fifty bucks when it was out of print like two years ago and it was worth every penny. It's one of the best guide books I've ever seen. Breaks down all of the weapons and what damage types they do for each attack. For instance the two handed axe does blunt for the first two swings and then the third does physical and the fourth and fifth do blunt again. Insane detail on every aspect of this game you would ever want to know about.
