So, with car or appliance manufacturers, there is an incentive there to try to capture more of the market by making a bracket of cheaper car for people who don't have as much to spend. I'm not exactly sure that it works exactly the same way for housing, or at least, if there is a linear parallel. Often what happens is that lower quality housing is not necessarily more affordable housing, as the bottom of the market tends to stick closely to the top of the market. And perversely, because rental housing often relies heavily upon credit, low quality low-income housing is sometimes even more expensive than luxury housing.
I think of studies done on subprime and low-income (non-subsidized) housing in different real estate markets in the country, and I think particularly of some of the closer qualitative observations made by Matthew Desmond in his book, Evicted (https://www.amazon.com/Evicted-Poverty-Profit-American-City/dp/0553447459). Which, to me, is a starting point for any discussion about housing. What I've read has also been borne out in experience in LLT disputes and eviction proceedings in rural Indiana and also East Cleveland.
My understanding is that usually the business model that makes sense to property management companies looking to fill in that market is not to build solid but no frills housing, but to buy up older or not so well maintained houses or apartments which can be sold at a premium to people who might have worse credit or even a spotty eviction record.
And in some ways, housing is maybe a bit more like healthcare than it is like cars or appliances, such that while survival is possible without a car, everybody needs a roof over their heads. So the demand on housing is maybe stickier than it is on a car or appliance, because it is very difficult for a person to simply not have a place to live. This gives landlords a lot more leverage in charging more, as lots of people will pay over half their income just for a roof, even in lower-quality housing.
And whereas car and appliance manufacturers have a considerable interest in trying to tap a middle and working class market, it is actually probably more in the interest of landowners and landlords to push the landlord/tenant relationship further in the direction of effective serfdom, a situation under which simply having a place to get out of the rain is increasingly viewed as a privilege worth most of a person's useful talent and labor.
That's an arrangement that would probably suit landlords just fine.
Depends on your definitions of "cheap" and "decent". The price for a queen mattress can run anywhere from like $300 to $8000... so words like cheap/decent are going to be pretty relative. www.sleeplikethedead.com calls anything under $700 for a queen a low-price mattress. (Midrange is $700-1800.)
With that in mind and free delivery being important, you could consider one of the very highly rated foam mattresses from Amazon. Here's a link to Tuft & Needle's mattress -- but just scroll down to the "Compare to Similar Items Section" and you should see the specs and reviews for Sleep Innovations and Brentwood Home as well.
I'm no expert, but I feel like one of these 3 mattresses could be the most "decent" in the $500-600 range.
If you are looking cheaper (but not smaller--because of course a full/double would save you money over the queen size)... there should be options locally. We bought a spring mattress from Pate's Mattress Outlet (4500 Centennial Drive--Might be closed now?) about 6 years ago for about $350. (We did drive it home ourselves, though.)
It was good enough for us (an only moderately overweight couple), but after only about 4 years a couple springs had sprung and were poking through the top edges of the mattress--probably from us sitting on the edge of the bed.
I second this. Grab that Yirgacheffe blueberry bomb whenever you can! Their Central American light to medium roasts are also a safe bet. I had a bag of Guatemalan from Hopscotch that was BURSTING with watermelon. Man I miss that bag of beans...
If you want to step up that morning cup I recommend buying whole beans. Something as cheap as this hand grinder will produce a nice even grind. Coffee ground fresh before brewing makes a massive difference that anyone can appreciate.
Brown County roasts a good bean too. Just stick to light and medium roasts. I've had few dark roasts around here that weren't burnt and oily.
If you have an android phone, these are great. They pair to your phone and give code read out and ability to reset the light if its just a glitch. You have to have an app on your phone, some are free, but one of the best is only is $5.00 (torque pro). I'm not sure about iphone stuff. (edit: its also nice to have an idea what's wrong before going to a repair person.)

Unfortunately it seems like Mitsuwa stopped doing deliveries the year I left town, but look for something like the ajinomoto ramen from here https://puu.sh/BtHYZ/eb19795084.png for something frozen

These are dried, but not fried, and also have very good tasting tonkotsu soup bases

I prefer the frozen fare for shoyu ramen but Marutai does a damn good job on its tonkotsu soup bases

When people ask for the best xyz food in town, I hate when redditers respond with, "You should make it yourself, it's easy/cheaper/better!"
So I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but you could take your favorite loose tea with you in tea bags like these or these.
Perhaps more helpfully, though, I'm partial to Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Sunset/Spice Black Tea, and you can get the bags/sachets at our Target.
I thought so too, but amazon says free shipping on the blade (which is odd for something like this as I'm assuming heavy packaging). $10 to $16 shipping on the snath.
I'm considering this combination.

Though I have the most experience with something similar to these standard grass blades.
http://scythesupply.com/blades.html They don't calculate shipping till check-out, so I haven't even tried.
You mentioned you do blacksmith work, if this is something you do, I don't imagine you could undercut these mass production prices?
Depending on how poor you are and how perfect of a job you want done, you might want to consider some DIY body work. Depending on the depth of the scratch, you might be able to fix it with just some automotive sandpaper (NOT hardware store sandpaper), some polishing compound, and a microfiber cloth.
If the scratches are deep enough that they've gouged out the paint, you'd need to sand, prime, and paint. I'd suggest talking to the good folks over at Bloomington Autocolor - they can fill a spray can with a custom matched color for your car. They can tell you what you need to do, and there are plenty of good Youtube videos as well.
For the dents, sometimes you can pop them out if they're rounded, otherwise you might have to replace the part. You can try a junkyard, or just order online. Depending on how the mirror broke you might be able to do a temp fix with some 2-stage epoxy, otherwise you'll probably want to order a replacement part for that as well.
Also, just because I'm a tutor, the word is "exorbitant", not "absorbent" ;-)
Just remember if you do actually go Comcast, to do yourself a favor and buy your own hardware. Get yourself a good DOCSIS 3.0 modem (or 3.1 if you want to spring for gigabit) and a router that won't bottleneck you.
I've had Comcast for multiple years in multiple apartments, both in college with 2 roommates and post grad with my gf. Outside of the outage from like 2-4am once every 4ish months give or take, I've always received the service I paid for. I won't try and say they're a company ran by good people (they're not), but the service is reliable if you get the right hardware for the job. The combo I linked ya would break even in under a year's worth of rental fees.
Been meaning to look around for this, maybe someone attracted to this thread will recognize it and know where to find it in Bloomington -
Meito Royal Milk Tea ? My Japanese friend loves it and is currently going through cancer treatments so I'd really love to bring her some comfort, but shipping from Japan takes months (and $$)

I would highly recommend a ninja drinking device, something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Double-Sided-Binocular-Flask-Binoculars/dp/B0021X2WQY
MOTHER OF GOD. I checked Amazon two days ago and they had plenty of Prime options for around ~$5. The cheapest I see now is $35 for a single pair.
WHY DO I PROCRASTINATE UGHHHHH
PS - here is the equipment I have.

I have issues that I think are due to the mount I'm currently using. Once I install the tripod - I think it will be better.
If you think it's the hard drive that's a easy fix. Solid state drives have gone way down in price too.
