Well if you're truly just cruising you can get away with a lot of stuff. Technically no need for chromoly tubes or double wall rims. Although you will still want sealed bearings of course.

Firstly, if you feel like saving money this bike will serve you well for an absolute fraction of the price. I can't confirm if the hubs are sealed though. It's full chromoly with double wall rims and some people have said both hubs sealed, some have said rear is sealed front is not. All I know is it's great for the price: https://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Freestyle-Beginner-Featuring-Available/dp/B07GNDF1HH?th=1

Moving on to a great bike with confirmed sealed bearings, double wall rims, and full chromoly is the Kink Whip XL. Great bike all around for a great price: https://www.kinkbmx.com/bikes/2020/whipxl-20/

And as far as commuting on a BMX goes, Stolen has a ton of great options going all the way from 22 to 29. All of these are worth looking at and great for the price. Obviously, the bigger you get the less BMX freestyle tricks you will be doing but the easier and more comfortable long distance commuting will be. So if you don't plan on riding freestyle but still want a fun BMX feel of going off curbs and popping wheelies, a 24 or 26 will suit you perfectly:

I want to get a 24" BMX for cruisin' around, no tricks or anything. I'm currently cruising around on a standard 20", and I wanna upgrade. Like i said, I don't plan on doing anything extreme, just cruising. I was looking online, Amazon has a few listed under $300 like this one for example: https://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Title-Boys-Freestyle-Bike/dp/B07G3RVN6V/ref=pd_ybh_a_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=N6HVYVBZZ5XYEQZ4J1QX but im not sure about it's quality. I know I don't need a top of the line bike, as I'm just a casual cruiser, but I want to know I'm getting something decent.

As far as price range, I'd like to keep it around $300ish or below, simply because I'm a pretty casual rider, and I'm not looking to sink a bunch of cash into something that I'm just gonna putt around on. That being said, I do like owning nice shit, and I can afford something in the $500-$600 range if i want, I just don't think that would be necessary for someone like me.

Also, what sprocket size do i want? I went to my local bike shop and was browsing and a some of them had a standard size BMX sprocket (at leas to my casual eye), while others had little bitty ones. What should I get? What price range should I be looking at? The one i like at my local shop is like $320 for a Haro 24" with standard sprocket and big fat street tires (which i like). Should i pull the trigger, or grab something online?

with that price range , i would look around for a used bike that is fully chromoly , any thing new in that price range will most likely be really shit and not last more then 2 months in my experience

the only bike brand new that i would even buy in that range would be

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GNDMK4W/ref=twister_B07KD87Z4F?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

yes it says boys bike but the stats don't lie

its 21 inch top tube , its full 4130 , its double wheeled rims , and as long as your just starting out it should hold you over

i been downvoted for posting a mongoose before but this is a crazy good entry bike

here is a good youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzinE6PqKQk&feature=youtu.be

things that will wear fiirst

grips , tires , chain , pedals

everything else is really nice . its not a wethepeople or cult , but its a fucking great bike don't let tell you its nice

Cycle Torch makes a great system. They have what’s called Bolt lights, there are only $12 each and come in headlight and taillight varieties. They are very low profile and will fit on the bottom of your handlebars next to your stem.

The headlight version makes very little light however, but CT does make a dual beam headlight if you actually need night time visibility, and that one is very good too. See links.

Checking your chain alignment is really really easy.

Get a ruler. Metric is preferable, but if all you have is inches, we can work with that. However, if it's an inch ruler, this is going to be a lot harder. I have one of these. I use it for a lot of stuff, and you can get them almost anywhere, so I would recommend you get one.

Measure from the center of your seat tube to the inside edge of your sprocket. The more precise you measure, the better your chainline will end up, but at a minimum, you need to measure to the nearest 1mm (or 1/32 inch). Write that number down. We'll call this dimension S.

Now measure from the inside of your dropout to the inside of the driver teeth, again to the nearest 1mm (1/32 inch). White that number down. We'll call this dimension D.

Finally, add S and D together. If you used inches, you need to convert fractional inches to decimal inches, then convert the inches to mm. Don't be scared, Google will do it for you.

For a perfect chainline, S+D=55. If it's less, add spacers between the sprocket and the frame to make up the difference.

For example, suppose you measured your sprocket at 42mm, and your driver at 12mm. That's 54mm, so add a 1mm spacer.

If S+D is greater than 55, remove spacers. You might get in trouble with stuff hitting your chainstays though.

By the way, 55mm is 1/2 the width of the hub (BMX hub spacing is 110mm). We are just using the inside of the dropout as a reference plane to measure the distance from the driver to the centerline of the bike. If you have a driveside hubguard, you need to subtract that thickness from the D measurement.

I hope that helps.

Sk8 Hi Vans (great for ankle protection on the cranks). Bell Division Helmet. G-Form shin pads. I have Shadow Conspiracy Invisalite elbow pads, but don't ever use them. They're pretty much the same as the some generic foam knee pads I have, off amazon: https://www.amazon.com/McDavid-Youth-Knee-Elbow-Black/dp/B01BD0DZKC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501884304&sr=8-2&keywords=hex+knee+pad

You can't really see it under my jeans and gives more confidence for pedal slips, and knee hitting the stem or falling to your knees. A hard plastic would be better but I have yet to find one that fits nicely under jeans (I am not about wearing them on the outside like it's the 90s, even though I long for those days and am from that era).

  1. Go to your local sporting goods store, Dick's Sporting Goods tends to be the best for this because of how aggressively they price clearance.
  2. Ask them if they have any "air backpacks". If the associate looks confused, ask for a manager. Air is when something goes below clearance and rings up for $0.02, and they will sell it for 75% off of the original price, but in many districts they're getting ready for inventory so they are motivated to move this stuff. I know at some of my local stores they just sell all air for $5. I got a $120 Browning backpack for $5. You're going to be looking for a nice hiking backpack with the part that goes around your waist so the bag isn't banging you in the back as you ride.
  3. Order a bunch of tubes, they are available for as little as $3, or if you run Tublitos then grab some patch kits and one extra tube.
  4. Order a cheap set of sockets, allen keys, and a chain breaker off of Amazon.
  5. Throw all that stuff in your cheap backpack with the last remaining part of your chain from when you initially cut it.
  6. Bring that bag with you every time you go riding anywhere.

Now, for about $100 you'll never be stuck again. I'm amazed when I see people who aren't prepared for this kind of scenario.

The mongoose L100 is this bike, i don't even think walmart sells it, but yes it would be a much better bike then the framed.

u/Kitoace · 1 pointr/bmx

This is legit. The best bike for the price. https://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Legion-Wheel-Freestyle-Black/dp/B01LW44X4K use every part they give you till it wears out then and only then upgrade it. My friend has this. First the go where the grips. Then the times and the chain everything else is lasting. When you buy new tires. Buy 100psi and run high 80s. And if you don't run brakes I'll buy your lever and brake arms /cable.

You can use something like this https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-Automotive-248658-10-25-Ounce-Reformer/dp/B003HG48AC since it doesn't seem to be more than just surface rust. You might want to use a little sandpaper on it too though. Normally you would just use sandpaper, sand it, clean it and then primer it and then paint. But you can skip pretty much everything by just using rust converter. Basically turns your rust into paint. Chemistry is weird.

I'm getting a bike for a 10 year old kid to ride to school on. Doesn't need to be fancy, just durable. Would prefer for it to be from Amazon or a major retailer like Performance Bike. Up to $300 is fine.

Currently looking at something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Mongoose-Legion-Wheel-Freestyle-Bike/dp/B01LW1D4Q6/

To keep in your price range you will probably have to go used.

The Mongoose L100 and the Kink Gap are the standard new bike answers for this question. There is not much else out there with 100% chromoly frames near your price range.
