Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
https://www.amazon.com/Aristotle-Dante-Discover-Secrets-Universe/dp/1442408936
Two boys who seem mismatched on the face of it become best friends and grow up together. There exists an even stronger gravity between them, if only one of them would accept it. The ending is perfect – so joyous that I got choked up for real.
This is a YA novel. What I like is the beautifully characterized narrator and how, like CMBYN, there are no cheap dramatics to goose the story.
I remember reading a thread here of how people of different age and sexual orientation share their love of the movie/book. And there is also this companion book on amazon, so i'm sure she'd appreciate it as a gift! Even if she doesn't like it in the end, it is still an experience -- would be nice also for her to think why she didn't like it ;)
edit: didn't mean to suggest giving the other book as well..it was meant as evidence that people who appreciate the book are a diverse group. 😀
Re: mental health and addiction. I just read Nic’s second memoir, We All Fall Down
https://www.amazon.com/We-All-Fall-Down-Addiction/dp/0316080810
He touched on this towards the end of the book, and I really wanted more of it. If I understand correctly, he was able to keep sober for many years after he was correctly diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and got help around it.
This wasn’t brought up in the movie because it happened many years after the events of the movie. But this is what’s most interesting to me about his recovery, and I want to know more. I would love to have another book from him that details his recovery, not just the years of addiction. To me, that would give the most people hope for recovery and sobriety.
I’m planning to ask him a question around this on the AMA today. Hopefully he sees it and is able to answer. I’ll let you know.
All excellent points you’re bringing up! Will try to respond more later.
I would encourage anyone in this Reddit group who is not already a member of the Call Me By Your Name Global Facebook Group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/CMBYNglobal/ ) to join asap. There are over 22,000 members from over 100 countries, so there is a good chance there are members who live near you. I have met dozens of like-minded people from this group in person and I cannot tell you how good it feels to talk to other people who "get it". Like you, I have been frustrated by many of my family and friends who just don't understand my enthusiasm. I also would recommend a book that I published (profits going to The Trevor Project) with essays from this group, Twitter, and Facebook groups about how CMBYN has changed their lives. https://www.amazon.com/Call-Me-Your-Name-Touched/dp/0998762563/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1562085041&sr=8-5
Putting together a book on all the various discussion/reaction categories to CMBYN will take a labor of love. Each item may require a release from the individual contributor and from REDDIT. Someone would need to take charge. It is not the sort of work that will swing a profit. If there is interest, I will contact a couple of Brokeback Mountain folks for more details.
Here is the link to the book on "fan" reaction" to Brokeback Mountain: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Brokeback-Members-Ultimate-Forum/dp/1595941223 (And) the link to reviews: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RV95BKAPRLJ8S?ref=va_cr_lb

I swear this is the exact same kit I used 20 years ago to make mine! It’s a very soothing craft to do, actually.
