There's a documentary called Dear Mr. Watterson (it was available streaming at some point on Hulu I think) and a book about the strip and Bill's artwork called, [Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and his Revolutionary Comic Strip]
(https://www.amazon.com/Looking-Calvin-Hobbes-Unconventional-Revolutionary/dp/1441106855) that speak about licencing to some degree. My impression is that Bill sees his strip as an art form and wants it to be appreciated to some degree as such.

Also, I think he is/was concerned about the Pandora's box of allowing any licencing. The strip was active durring a time where people actually read newspapers. His net worth is calculated to be somewhere around 450 million. Tose calculations are rarely correct, but suffice to say I don't know that he needs to license his strip for financial reasons. He has had multiple multi-million dollar offers and has declined them all.

I don't know how much Waterson spoke about this directly. I think he made most of his statements durring conversations within the industry. It should be noted that Waterson was known to slip autographed copies of his books on to the shelves of independent bookstores, but stopped the practice after learning that the copies where being bought and re-sold at ludicrous markups.

Edit

Finally have some time to double back and finish out my thought. I don't necessarily agree with Watterson on his approach. I appreciate his willingness to take a stand on his rights reguardless of the financial 'loss'.

While all items are an encroachment of his intellectual property, I don't consider fan art to be the great encroachment that some people do. In short, I would totally use a Calvin coffee cup, but only if I bought it from an artist that shares the appreciation of the character.

Edit II

The book I referenced earlier cites a speech Watterson made in chapel 6 called, The Cheapening of the Comics. The speech is very blunt and frank. He doesn't condem all licinging directly, but does state that it is very rarely done well.

Woah! Good find! I hope you enjoy it! I bought that set for my husband for Christmas for around $90. While he loved it he was a bit disappointed that it didn't contain any bonus materials. Then, I recently found Exploring Calvin and Hobbes : An Exhibition Catalogue. It has interviews with the reclusive Watterson, and has a large section about comics that have inspired him. At the time I'm writing this, it's available on amazon for about $15. I consider it a great companion to the collection you just bought.

Ha thanks! I am so happy. They were a great gift.

Paperback's $59.55 (List price $100). Hardcover's out of stock but it's usually around $99. I'd suggest paperback cos it's easier to open and read. I collected the collections - There's something absolutely gorgeous about Bill Watterson's watercolor covers.

u/GumdropGoober · 4 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Amazon has used ones for about $5 apiece for the big collection books, seems like a great deal. As seen here.

Otherwise just have her punch book store into google and try a local one, Seattle has a bunch, and they are good at tracking down older books.

u/anonymizzle · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

You were inspired to copy the picture from the cover of the 10th Anniversary Book? It's a nice copy, but I hope you're not trying to pass it off as original work.

u/smikwily · 3 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Glad you enjoyed. They did release a companion book to go along with the exhibit if you are interested. It is available on Amazon and elsewhere: https://smile.amazon.com/Exploring-Calvin-Hobbes-Exhibition-Catalogue/dp/1449460364

u/dreiter · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Just FYI, I believe Half is owned by Amazon, so browsing through Amazon's used books will get you the same sellers. Here are 'very good' condition copies of a good C&H book.

u/Jacques_Cormery · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

If anyone is wondering, I just did some homework and found out the comic I had never seen was from The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes and you can click through "Look Inside" here to read the whole thing if you haven't before. Because my family already had Yukon Ho! and Weirdos from Another Planet we never got this one.

But that's just expanding on my experience. I'd still love to hear if this has happened to anyone else who fancied themselves pretty well-versed already.

Own it, Love it. Read it every year and still enjoy it as much as when i got it. (Was a Christmas present from my wife a while back.)

u/AnActualRock · 6 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I've gone as Hobbes for Halloween one year and my costume was nowhere near as good. Nothing is worse than walking into the party and everyone yelling "Tony the Tiger and a kid that likes cereal." I think i used this so if you try, make sure you get the Hobbes face right, otherwise you'll be an ad for frosted flakes.

u/chaseandpotatoes · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

If you mixed up the characters, then I happen to be in the exact same position. I decided to buy this guy. He isn't ideal, but he's is the best that I could find.

u/ImSmartIWantRespect · 9 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

So you gotta rub the Grandmas into the stain and let it sit for a few hours THEN throw in the wash. I put a Amazon link to be helpful, if you live in Seattle you could borrow my bottle if you'd like.

u/geeoph · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I just got my Complete Collection yesterday!!! SOOO EXCITEDDD.

For anyone interested (Soft or Hard covers with a nice forward/Introduction by Bill Watterson): http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Calvin-Hobbes-Bill-Watterson/dp/1449433251

u/abesch2 · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

Here! I've got the same one. Really awesome!

u/mynameis_neo · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

This one's pretty cool, too. There was a museum exhibit at Ohio State and this book features a long-form interview with Bill Watterson that covers ground not found in any other books.

u/YoungsterJoey99 · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

After a few minutes of searching i found this. Pretty sure it's the same poster.

u/CourtingEvil · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I was referring to getting a clear, protective cover for your 3DS. You can still see the awesome vinyl AND it won't get all scratched up!

u/4AngrySquirrels · 3 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I wish I could take credit for that. It's actually this.

u/exitpursuedbyagolden · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I also prefer plain shirts. Next Level Apparel, actually. However, I don't have any accomplishments that define me, but somehow Nike makes everything that fits me well, and I love their products, and the poor, tiny hands that sew them, and if an occasional logo sneaks in there that defines me, I'm totally willing to accommodate it.

u/matt-ross · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I read the Mental floss article and noticed that there was no mention of the strip I purchased on eBay several years back. I wasn't that worried about it because it had a copyright on it, and I bought it for $95 USD. Anyone have a comment on it? I know it is a translation of a strip that was released previously.

Original French release here: https://www.amazon.com/Calvin-Hobbes-T24-petit-format/dp/2258110653

Translation (from the original strip here:https://imgur.com/gallery/ptvf6ld/comment/92268674):

Calvin: Summer days are supposed to be longer, but they sure seem short to me.

Hobbes: I'll say. We didn't get to do half our itinerary.

u/ENM173 · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

If you're willing to put in a decent chunk of cash, I'd suggest getting The Complete Calvin and Hobbes Collection. Otherwise, I'd suggest going with "The Essential Calvin and Hobbes." I seem to remember that one being my favorite book growing up.

u/xopj · 3 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I saw it on sale at a Barnes and noble back in January for around $150 I think? I was going to get it but held out thinking I'd do it some other time. Now it's back up to over $200... I haven't chec... oooo it appears to only be $100 on Amazon if this really is the full set (doesn't show the box view to clarify it) : http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Calvin-Hobbes-v/dp/0740748475/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304095840&sr=8-1

u/ch41n54w · 4 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

This is the complete set in paper back. It is 50 bucks cheaper than it was in Barnes and Noble last week.

u/tashbarg · 8 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Any good bookstore should have it. Here it is at amazon, where you can get the ISBN with which every bookstore should be able to locate it. Or just order it there.

u/Regit394 · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

Looks like there's some different options (Used and paperback aren't too pricey!)

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

You can definitely get it on Amazon. This set was the first time I had ever pre-ordered books.

u/elizabethunseelie · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

[This is the one I used] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009D3898U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). If linking commercial stuff goes against any sub rules I'll DM anyone who's interested.

u/airon0828 · 5 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

As a C&H fan I suggest to just invest in the entire set so it's easy to read anytime you wish. I got the hardcover way back when it came out but there is a paperback version now.

I was so depressed when I discovered I'd missed the exhibit. Thank you for describing in detail all of the awesomeness that I will be forever kicking myself for not getting out of Illinois to see for myself. ;-)

BTW - I did order this book which seems to be a consolation buy for me.

u/chargoggagog · 17 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Amazon for $53 for paperback, $86 for hardcover.

I went looking for yours and I can't find it anywhere but I found this.

u/Alcubierre · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

My dad introduced me to Calvin and Hobbes, and I got him The Complete Calvin and Hobbes a couple of years ago for Christmas. Every time I'm back home, I read it cover to cover.

u/drewy911 · 5 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

I think this it it. Not OP though so it might not be the right thing.

u/MrDarcysBitch · 5 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

My husband bought the specialty edition box set years ago. Both of my boys have read the books several times!
The Complete Calvin and Hobbes https://www.amazon.com/dp/1449433251/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ejMSDbBPZXQMB

u/RustonStrong · 9 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

THIS one. I believe it contains every strip ever published in the papers.

u/ShotFromGuns · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

The current price seems to be what it normally is ($58.99 USD/41% off list price).

Edited to clarify that this is the Amazon.com/USD price.

www.amazon.com/dp/1449433251/ref

$52 down from $100

u/vespertinism · 1 pointr/calvinandhobbes

So I took a look at the set I got at costco and it's a 4 book paperback set so I think it's different than OPs, but I found this link https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Calvin-Hobbes-Bill-Watterson/dp/1449433251

u/SpaceLemur34 · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

Yep. With "Indispensable" and
"Exploring" you should have everything as far as I know. And no reason I can see to get paperback when you've got the hardcover.

u/NicJitsu · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

For the Canadians: $84 for it paperback, $154 for hardback :-(

u/ryschwith · 4 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

What is dealnews.com? Affiliate link? Here’s the direct link for anyone who’s a bit skeptical: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Calvin-Hobbes-Bill-Watterson/dp/1449433251/

u/zortnarftroz · 2 pointsr/calvinandhobbes

This I believe is the earliest and where I started.

I then went to this one but I don't know if you can really go wrong starting anywhere...
