Congratulations!

  • Personally I would recommend either a Remington 700 over the 783. There's nothing wrong with the 783, but the 700's fit, finish as well as the overall quality is just superior and I'm a firm believer in the "buy once, cry once" philosophy, especially with firearms. If you buy the 783, my bet is that as you get a little more serious about shooting, you'll end up buying a 700.

  • With all that said, if you're not hell bent on buying a Remington, I personally would go with a Tikka T3 (there are many, many models). Overall it's about the same as a Remington 700 in terms of quality, but the bolt action is just silky smooth and the trigger pull is wonderful. I'm biased because I'm a bit of a Tikka fan, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

  • In regards to the .308 calibre, again I'm a bit biased because my rifle is in .308 but regardless, I think .308 is the way to go. It's easily found, and comes in a variety of weight from (approximately) 120gr to 200gr so you have a choice of choosing a lighter bullet for smaller game or a heavier bullet for larger game.

  • To pass the time while your PAL/RPAL is being processed, I strongly suggest buying high quality safety equipment You don't have to break the bank, but don't skimp. Apart from that I'd say buy a good soft case, and later down the road you can buy a hard case (my personal favourite is the Pelican 1750). Here's a little list....

  • Ear protection: Howard Leight Impact Sport and Howard Leight earplugs (Personally I use both-- you only get one pair of ears!)

  • Eye protection: Smith Aegis Arc (DS Tactical is a great company to deal with)

  • Hard case: Pelican 1750 (Production Case is a nice Canadian company with prices way better than anywhere else and great customer service)

  • Bipod: Harris Engineering (widely considered the best bang for your buck product-- I use the 9-13 inch because I'm a bit taller, but most people like the 6-9)

  • Soft case: Cabela's drag bag-- great product at a great price.

  • Torque wrench: VERY important in my opinion, as I see way too many people over-torquing their gear (i.e. scope mount screws) and messing things up. Wheeler Torque Wrench-- this is what I use. It's reasonably priced and I use it all the time when I'm working on my rifle. I know plenty of people say they're not necessary, but they'll save you from major headaches in the future.

  • Bonus: When you buy your scope, DO THIS to level it. I've tried all kinds of methods, but this by far the best (assuming your rifle is levelled first). It's so simple, but so effective.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I'll check back in a little bit (studying for finals right now) if I think of anything else.

  • If you were to go with a kestrel, buy one of the 4500 series - you can get them for reasonable now that the new ones are out. You don't need link or all the bells and whistles - what you need is wind and atmospheric data - wind being the biggest factor. With a kestrel for wind and you ballistics calculator, you are good to go.
  • Buy proper bags. Period. In fact - I have an extra set of JSA Tactical bags that I've shot with and no longer need - they are missing some stitching but besides that they are excellent to use. The Game Changer is pretty neat - I am looking at adding one to my kit.

I think what is going to get you the best bang for your buck will be the bags - there are ways to estimate wind - buy this book - it will help immensely.

Let's talk about your reloading setup what kit are you using to reload? (dies, bullets, powder, trimming etc).

>so i just want to be able to not have to spend absorbent legal fees defending myself.

For sure, the best solution would be to change the storage requirement laws, like how the storage requirements in Washington DC were recently struck down by our supreme court because they prevented people from legally storing guns accessible for self defense.

I'm just talking about your options for now, without any change to the laws.

>unlock your safe

Is there a requirement of what type of safe? Can you use the rapid unlock handgun safes, like this?

>(mag must not be in the gun during storage)

Do they inspect your storage periodically, and do you have warning of when such inspections will occur? I can't see how that could possibly be enforced in the US with our right against unreasonable searches. If you have a warning of when the inspections will occur you could make sure you were complying with the storage requirement just for the inspections, and if you have to use the gun in necessary self defense just lie and say it was unloaded.

>of course both of those options take time which as you know is very precious in a home invasion

Indeed, which is precisely why I'm suggesting you should break the law and be prepared to lie about it because they will be unable to prove you broke the law. We have a strong spirit of civil disobedience in the USA, and we consider an unconstitutional law to not be a binding law at all, we often simply ignore laws we don't agree with and are prepared to defend ourselves in the court of law from the consequences later if necessary.

Indeed it is, and if you are cheap you will like this. Fits like a glove and the quality seems okay.

I have a custom leather holster being made, but the girl making it is super backlogged. I picked up this for throwing into the bush buggies, and now I'm really liking it.

I may have to buy another ranch hand to fit the leather holster when it finally is finished.

Well, you're definitely going to see your application take longer, as answering yes on any of those questions just automatically flags your application for review.

Honestly, as someone with the same diagnosis and even the same medication, I just wouldn't have even answered yes to that. As others have mentioned, that question is actually much more specific than just "mental health."

>16d) During the past five (5) years, have you threatened or attempted suicide, or have you suffered from or been diagnosed or treated by a medical practitioner for: depression; alcohol, drug or substance abuse;behavioural problems; or emotional problems?

ADHD isn't any of those things. Its a mental... impairment, maybe? Learning disability? Its not really any different than having bad eye sight. It negatively impacts your ability to get things done, but can be helped somewhat by medication. Its certainly not a behavioral or emotional problem.

If anything I'd say it would make you more safe with guns... the weird thing about ADHD is that while its very hard to keep attention on things you have no interest in, you can get super attentive with things you really like. If you really like guns and shooting, your brain is going to be in that second mode when handling them. To me, ACTS and PROVE isn't just stuff you have to do, its weirdly entertaining and cathartic to me because I'm interested in firearms.

Absolute worst case, the CFO might make you get a letter from your doctor saying you aren't a threat to yourself or others. Do let us know... I hope I don't have to go through some nonsense when I renew the PAL.

Sidenote unrelated to guns, check out this book if you haven't already. Its been very helpful to me.

I was just thinking about this. I picked up a Pelican 1200 on Amazon for $39.99 as part of last year's Black Friday sale. It's currently listed as $67, but I think this is somewhat of a mainstay for their annual sale. I don't know that it's 'non-bulky', but it's definitely strong and the pick and pluck foam makes for a nice custom fit for my 1911.

If it's just for a .22 I'm sure either of them would be fine. Personally I really want a TRS-25 but I couldn't afford it right now so I ended up getting the UTG red/green dot

https://www.amazon.ca/Leapers-4-Inch-Integral-Picatinny-Mounting/dp/B005UGIPUQ

Mounted it to my AR and it's perfect, decent quality for the price and a nice bright red or green dot depending on what mood I'm in. I would take this one over the Tasco.

And ditch the OEM scale that comes with the kit, go for this or this. A digital scale makes weighing your charges much easier and quicker.

Notice how they're exactly the same thing as the Hornady or Frankford Arsenal, except for fall less $$. Everything nowadays comes out of the same factories in the East, and resellers just slap their label on and charge whatever they think their targets are willing to pay. '

I personally got that Smart Weigh and it works great.

yes.

save yourself the headache of rings, buy this:
https://www.amazon.ca/UTG-Airgun-Medium-Profile-Integral/dp/B002TUSJVQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1509544840&sr=8-5&keywords=utg+scope+mount

the dovetail on the marlin 795 is sorta shallow, I mounted my scope with the cheap rings it came with and after a couple hundred rounds it had slid back half an inch, ruining zero.

Switched to this mount, stayed solid for hundreds more rounds, survived a day of Mapleseed.

To mount it, just look on top of the receiver of your Marlin 795, you will see a sort of ridge or rail. That's an 11mm dovetail mount. Common on air rifles and .22's. Scope mounts slide on and you tighten the screws, similar to a picatinny rail, just without the slots, and narrower.

If you're just plinking on crown land, the CZ858 is not that much of an upgrade to a SKS.

I'd save up for a 22lr rifle (savage mark ii or 10/22), some 22lr steel and just plink your heart out

I think this might be the same as the one another Redditor mentioned, but I have this one, and it fits/works great.

Could check amazon.ca as another option for the caldwell magnum rifle gong without stand - http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00806C43W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages01

Price has gone up 15 bucks since I ordered it a while ago (probably the weak dollar), but shipping is free. Mine came with a white powdercoat and actually measures about 10" from top to bottom and 9" across the round part. It is AR550 and takes everything I shoot at it.

Looks like there is the 8" Iron Face steel target on there too for $70 plus $5.50 shipping - http://www.amazon.ca/Iron-Face-Steel-Targets-Medium/dp/B018813W7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453181526&sr=8-1&keywords=iron+face+steel+targets

Welcome to the wonderful world of home rifle maintenance. As frustrated as you maybe now, you'll be better able to work on your firearms in the future because of it. We've all been in a similar position where something simple won't work the way it's supposed to.

What type of hammer (weight, material, head) and punches (material, diameter) are you using?

How are you placing the receiver while you work on the rifle, are you trying to drive the pin out side to side or top down?

Based on what you've posted so far (and not knowing answers to the above yet).

If it were me working on the rifle I would make a quick armourers block (see below for link to a purchasable one). Just take a piece of 2x4 and drill a decent sized hole in it, perhaps 3/8" to 1/2". Now clearly there's a lot of pressure holding that pin in place, to remove it you need a proper hammer and a proper punch. For the hammer you need something like a 12oz steel ball pein. For the punch you will need a steel punch with a diameter as close to the pin as possible without going over.

To drift that pin out of the receiver you're going to put your armourers block on a solid surface (work bench, garage floor, etc). Place the receiver, on it's side on top of the block, and punch the pin from the top into the hole in the armours block. It will take a few good wacks before the pin will move, and once it does it will move quick.

If after all that the pin won't come out I would recommend taking it to gunsmith as you may be doing something wrong.

OMG, I want one! And the kids can play with it too! Plus, it's environmentally friendly -- although probably not water friendly. I guess if it falls out of a boat it'll float?

I don't see a scale in there, so I assume you are using the dipper that it came with.
I would very much recommend an upgrade to a small scale like this. I weighed a bunch of tests with the dipper and they were off by enough that I'm sure you'd see it in your groups.

u/Tech1240 · 1 pointr/canadaguns

I recently purchased this one.
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B000P583SQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1494528684&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=Double+rifle+case&dpPl=1&dpID=51scPbmA4aL&ref=plSrch

I can fit a scoped AR15 and AR10 in the case. It also has a strap system so they can be held in place so they don't bounce around. I would recommend it, especially if you take multiple scoped rifles shooting.

u/Andrew9623 · 2 pointsr/canadaguns

I didn't actually buy it, but I got a pair of 7.62 x 39 snap caps from my Reddit Secret Santa. I'm excited to see what I'll get from my secret sniper cough cough cough

u/Hardhead13 · 1 pointr/canadaguns

Thanks, I'll look those over.

I do have this one now. But, as I said, it didn't come with the rifle.

u/noobiola · 2 pointsr/canadaguns

All interesting choices!
I have the Marlin 795 and I installed this cheapo mount for my glass:

https://www.amazon.ca/UTG-Airgun-Medium-Profile-Integral/dp/B002TUSJVQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524225459&sr=8-3&keywords=utg+.22

Added a little blue loctite on the screws.

$16 same manufacturer and it's the same scale Horandy slaps their name on and charges $30-50 for.
