The Xbox 360 controller is a great all-round choice at $26.75. I can't really help you if you want to pay less. There are some actually good no name controllers but it's hard to find them between all the trash that's sold.
You can also buy a usb/hdmi dongle.
Once the PC has capabilities for it though, CEMU still doesn't switch inputs once it's turned on. At the end of the day, emulators simply don't have this feature.

I still share your skepticism, but I do not completely rule out open source in the distant future. (by the way the emulator has been released for about 1.5 years not a few months, and not sure about how long pre-release development was)
Amd cards sadly don't work well with cemu. This is because amd drivers don't suppport opengl well. Either wait a year for vulkan to be implemented or get an Nvidia card. Cards are starting to get cheap nowadays the gtx 1050 is only $137 on amazon . You could also spend extra to get the 1050ti for $200.
