Hey OP like /u/SprintLTE said earlier, no need for the modem, I had piss-poor packet-loss with the C2100T and the C3000z.

I opted for the R6700 nighthawk router but to my dismay, suffered from a huge discord voice bug. Returned and have been sitting pretty with the ASUS RT-68U.

It does all the necessary VLAN tagging and PPPoE. https://www.amazon.com/Dual-band-Wireless-AiProtection-Compatible-RT-AC68U/dp/B00FB45SI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523390480&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+rt68u

What I love about it is the ease of use, reception, and how fucking EASY the UI is compared to most modems. Additionally I find that router restarts for updating settings are much quicker. Honestly my favorite router.

I do frequent speed-tests with this router, and here are my results: http://www.speedtest.net/results?sh=0eef6823f5de92b5a49ca1f60d13b715

Anything below 800Mbps are over wifi, any over 800Mbps are wired ethernet over CAT 6

The cool thing about CenturyLink Gig service is that you don't need a modem at all. The ONT they provide is akin to the modem in the sense that it Modulates and Demodulates light signals. You just need a good router that supports PPPoE authentication and VLAN tagging usually (that can vary on the region a bit)

This modem appears to be decent for less than $100

Most routers on Amazon/Ebay that have "gig ethernet" and "dual band wifi" should be compatible.

Also don't expect to get gig speeds over wifi ever. That's unrealistic unless you buy the best equipment for clients and for your router. If you need the full speed a hardwired ethernet connection to the router is going to be your best bet.

Hi all,

Thank you for the input. Your answers led me to more research and I ended up getting the following:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N08LPPP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N1WW638/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Replaced the current router, set it up for vlan 201 and used the extender upstairs and now getting 100 mbps wifi on devices plus extended coverage upstairs without problem.

Thanks all for the great support and responses.

We absolutely have fiber. I can verify as we have the unit the cable plugs into (which I can see), and then is wired to the modem itself.

In order to reach to my office I'll need another 20-25 feet. So I guess it sounds like I may need to actually have them come out to do it--which may prove impossible. Couldn't I just use this though and purchase additional cable? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002MQGRC/ref=asc_df_B0002MQGRC5149941/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395033&creativeASIN=B0002MQGRC&linkCode=df0&hvadid=216534554317&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16631053271517377539&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019549&hvtargid=pla-350717721345

I've tried to get them to come out, but they won't. They keep saying it's my problem. But clearly it's not.

Interesting note though. Tonight there's a block party. I'm the only neighbor not out, and all of a sudden I'm getting 30-35mbps using Ookla and Fast.com. These are numbers I haven't seen in sometime. Clearly our connection IS impacted by their use unless this is a complete fluke. Are you stating that fiber doesn't work that way?

Thoughts?

PS: I appreciate you chiming in as a CL employee.

The two ports on the CALIX ONTs serve different purposes. Only one is for data/internet (ETH 1) the other is for TV service (ETH 2).

Since you're just powering WiFi webcams via micro USB. Just buy a PoE injector like this one and save some $$$. PoE switches are expensive.

Hey, thanks for the awesome reply.

I ordered this last night, do you think that this could increase wifi speeds?

I'll have to check your link from my laptop, it is a bit confusing on mobile.

Ok Beautiful. So if you have not tried there are devices called powerline ethernet adapters (come in pairs and can add more if desired link below) basically you plug one into an outlet next to the router and then connect it via LAN cable then plug another near the device you want to connect and connect the device to the adapter via LAN cable. Essentially what this does is convert the electrical wiring into a network. You can then add more just purchase another adapter and plug it into wherever you have another device you want to connect to the original. I had good internet at my last apartment but due to the multitude of the wifi networks in my complex and the number of walls and odd angles in the apartment the signal had a hard time making it to the TV. Below is the pair I am currently using.

I got a TP Link 8816

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0037D922Y/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I could even get the DSL light to turn on, so it wasn't recognizing the inbound signal. I'm not laying this blame on centurylink; it just added to the pain in the ass. But I'm happy to use their router for free because it works fine.
